In the midst of the controversy surrounding the largely unpop ular etolling system of SANRAL (South African National Roads Agency Limited), the agency has shown its willingness to deliver on the mandate to manage the N1 roads and repair potholes. On 28 September, some huge potholes were photographed just north of the Baobab toll plaza on the N1 between Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Musina. By 5 October, they had been repaired. “SANRAL has a ‘48-hour turnaround’ time from the reporting to repair of a pothole on national roads. It is this quick turnaround, among other factors, that keeps South Africa’s national roads in top condition,” said SANRAL’s project manager, Mr Vusi Mona. Motorists may have noticed the progress on the pothole repairs on the stretch between the Hendrik Verwoerd tunnels and Musina. “But it was really bad,” said one driver. The unfairness of paying toll and having to drive on pothole-infested roads is a frustration to many a motorist. The huge potholes near the Baobab toll plaza were some of those really frustrating ones, because of the possibility of vehicle damage and the fact that money had just been forked out to pay toll. The Baobab toll plaza is managed by SANRAL and the toll fees are utilised for road maintenance on the N1. The agency manages 59%

of the 3 120km of toll roads in the country. SANRAL was asked what the cost was to repair a big pothole of half a meter in diameter. No approximate amount was given as Muna said that the cost of repairing potholes varied, and size was but one determining factor. “We spend billions annually on road maintenance, which includes major road works, periodic and routine maintenance work, improvements and repairing of defects, cracks and structural damage to road. The agency is also responsible for non-pavement work on the national road, such as vegetation control, road sign repairs and the clearing of side drains and culverts,” Muna said. The public may notify SANRAL of potholes on the national roads. Drivers on the N1 were assured that damages may be claimed if a vehicle’s tyre should indeed be damaged as a result of a pothole on a SANRAL road. In order to submit a claim, it goes without saying that the damage has to be evident and substantiated. Extensive details have to be provided, including details of the owner of the vehicle, of the driver and his driver’s license, of the incident and of the damage, with photographic evidence and three repair quotations. No duplicate claims may be handed in, therefore the vehicle owner has to claim either from SANRAL or from his insurer.

Die ietermagog wat verlede week gered is. Die dier was skugter vir die kamera, en is kort ná die neem van die foto weer in die natuur vrygelaat.

Ietermagog in sak kan man duur te staan kom ‘n Ietermagog mag dalk klein wees, maar is baie meer werd as ‘n renoster. Dit het die 36-jarige Mulalo Victor Ratombo van Thohoyandou verlede Woensdag eerstehands uitgevind. Die Makhado Polisie se K9 honde-eenheid het hom vasgetrek, nadat hy daarvan verdink is dat hy gesteelde goedere in sy bakkie vervoer het. Agter op sy bakkie, toegemaak in ‘n meelsak, het die polisie die skaam-skubbige, en uiters skaars, soogdier ontdek. Daar word vermoed dat Ratombo die ietermagog probeer smous het hier in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Ratombo is op die plek gearresteer en die ietermagog is by hom gekonfiskeer. Voor die ietermagog vrygelaat is, het die plaaslike Dierebe skermingsvereninging (DBV) dit na die Zoutpansberger se kantoor gebring vir ‘n vinnige foto. In daardie stadium was die ietermagog al vir die hele dag lank in die warm son, en baie getraumatiseerd. Plaaslike DBV diere-inspekteur mnr. Lawrence Khodobo het later bevestig dat die ietermagog op ‘n natuurreservaat vrygelaat is. Dit was vir hom, in al sy jare by die DBV, die eerste keer wat hy ‘n ietermagog moes red. Buiten dat ietermagogs baie skaars is, is hulle ook meer bedreig as renosters. Die waarde van

‘n ietermagog, op die swartmark, word geskat op sowat R150 000. ‘n Ietermagog word ook, so ver moontlik, lewendig verkoop of gesmokkel. Plaaslik word daar onder meer geglo as ‘n persoon ‘n ietermagog doodmaak en eet, dit sal kom reën. Die harde skubbe hou ook baie muti-waarde in. Dit kan blykbaar ‘n persoon beskerm teen heksery. In Asiatiese lande soos China en Indonesië is ietermagogvleis baie gewild en word daar baie geld betaal vir ‘n lewendig een. Sommige Chinese glo ook dat die skubbe van die ietermagog medisinale eienskappe het en dat dit byvoorbeeld kan help met swak bloedsomloop. Die Wêreldbewaringsunie (WBU) het in Julie vanjaar aangekondig dat die agt ietermagogspesies wêreldwyd nou as kwesbaar op die rooidatalys aangetoon is. Volgens prof. Ray Jansen van die departement van omgewing-, water-, en aardweten skappe aan die Tshwane Universiteit van Tegno logie (TUT) beteken dit die ietermagog is op die rand van uitwissing. Volgens die WBU se webblad is die ietermagog ook die mees gestroopte dier, selfs meer as olifante en renosters, in die wêreld - ‘n feit waarvan Ratombo nie bewus was nie. Ratombo se verweer was dat hy nie geweet het dis onwettig om ‘n ietermagog te besit nie. Ratombo het tydens sy borgaansoek vir die hof gesê hy het nie doelbewus gepoog het om die ietermagog te vang nie. Volgens hom het hy die dier in die veld gesien, opgetel en besluit om as troeteldier aan te hou. Ratombo het aangedui dat hy sy eie verdediging sal hanteer, en sal weer op 6 November Victor Ratombo (36) sê hy het nie geweet dit is in die hof moet verskyn vir verhoor. Altesaam 14 kinders is aangekla, nadat hulle op 25 Julie tydens die klopjag positief getoets het vir dwelms. Nog ‘n leerling is gearresteer, nie omdat hy positief getoets het vir dwelms nie, maar omdat ‘n knipmes in sy besit gevind is. Al die leerlinge moes ‘n afwentel-

ingsprogram voltooi, sodat die klagte teen hulle teruggetrek kon word. Die afwentelingsprogram is ‘n program waarin die kinders hulp van ‘n maatskaplike wer ker ontvang oor hoe om sosiale druk te hanteer en hulle attent gemaak word op die gevaar wat dwelms inhou. Dié straf is voorgestel, sodat die kinders nie ‘n kriminele rekord sal hê wat hul mag kniehalter ná skool nie. Die leerlinge se ouderdomme het gewissel tussen 15 en 18 jaar. Hulle sal ook, indien daar weer ‘n klopjag by die skool is, outomaties gevra word om ‘n dwelmtoets te ondergaan. Die Zoutpansberger het ver

neem dat van die leerlinge wat die program voltooi het, aangedui het dat hulle selfs bereid is om met hulle klasmaats te praat en aan te moedig om nie dwelms te gebruik nie. Tydens Vrydag se hofverrig tinge is 14 van die 15 leerlinge se sake teen hulle teruggetrek. Een meerderjarige leerling, wat van plan is om onskuldig te pleit op die klag, se saak is uitgestel. Colourist Connie wins another trophy for creativity Goldwell hosted a hair demon stration in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on 8 September and it came with a pleasant surprise - the presenting of an accolade for hair stylist Connie de Sousa of C Jay’s for third place in South Africa. On 13 October, the worldwide winner for the Goldwell Colorzoom Challenge 14 in the global creative colourist category was announced in Berlin. Mr Hardy Tsai of Taiwan took gold and the silver winner was Ms Heidi-Helena van den Berg of Pretoria, South Africa’s number one. Ten years ago, the international Goldwell Color Zoom event was also hosted in Berlin and Connie de Sousa was invited as a national winner. Since then, Connie has ended in the top five Six-year-old twins Isabella and Gabrièlla Griesel enjoyed the farm day at Intaglio Christian in the country to go to Spain in Primary School in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on 2 October. With them is bunny Theo. 2008, again in the top five to Las

Vegas in 2009, second in South Africa last year, when the event was in Los Angeles and third this year. Taki Mabobo of C Jay’s ended in the top five in the new talent colourist category this year and in 2011. The occasion for the presenting of Connie’s trophy was a demonstration on cut, colour and

up-styles presented at CJay’s to about 40 hairdressers from town, Tzaneen and Polokwane. Connie was responsible for the demo, while Goldwell educator Lisa Froneman gave a lecture and Christine Chuma of CJay’s gave a demonstration in Keratin treatment, which is used to reduce natural curls and frizz by half.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

esus Christ came into the world to save sinners. How we should praise God for that glorious work. Without Christ’s death upon that cursed cross no one would have been saved. Satan decided to tempt Christ by offering Him an easy way to rule the kingdoms of the world. However, the easy way is not always the best way, as most of us know. That easy way was not God’s way. God’s way was the cross by which He would save people and establish a worldwide kingdom. God’s way was the way of obedience. Christ would never bow down to Satan! We must remember this as far as Christian life is concerned. The Christian life can be very difficult. Today we have people telling us that God will save everyone if they are sincere in what they do and believe. That is the easy way, but it is not God’s way. Following Christ faithfully is the difficult way. Christ told His disciples they had to take up the cross and follow Him (Matt 10:28), which means that all who live the life of faith are to be obedient to Christ, exposing the sin of the world and calling people to repentance. It means becoming identified with the humiliation and suffering of Christ. The end of the way of the cross is heaven, eternal joy in the presence of God. The easy way can be very pleasant, but Proverbs 14:12 says: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Which pathway are you following? I pray that you will follow the way of the cross, that is faith in Jesus Christ our Saviour, which leads to eternal life. - 079 5168303

Heffings is “nie korrek”

Hierdie straatjie, wat ‘n toegangsroete vanuit Kleynhansstraat verskaf, is deur die Makhado Munisipaliteit vir R200 000 gewaardeer en die rekening met eiendomsbelasting aan familie van die oorspronklike eienaar gestuur.

Nog ‘n straatjie wat vir R200 000 gewaardeer is. Die oorspronklike eienaar is deur die jare vir basiese dienste aangeslaan, hoewel die grond al omtrent 14 jaar gelede verkoop en daarna ontwikkel is. Hierdie straatjie is die verste af (suid) in Kleynhansstraat en verleen toegang tot huise aan die oostekant van die straat.

“Dis ‘n deurmekaarspul!” het ‘n inwoner gesê nadat twee klein toegangstraatjies vanuit Kleyn hansstraat deur die Makhado Munisipaliteit vir R200 000 elk gewaardeer is. Mnr. Petrus van Niekerk en sy moeder, me. Anna van Nierkerk (70), bly al jare op familiegrond onder in Kleynhansstraat. Petrus se oupa, Piet van Niekerk, en sy pa se ouer suster, Hetta, het saam vyf erwe in Kleynhansstraat gekoop. Dit was in die jare vyftig. Ná sy pa se dood in 2002 het Petrus en sy moeder steeds op hulle gedeelte, wat twee burgererwe beslaan, aangebly. Tannie Hetta (me. H.P. van Niekerk), wat tans in Pretoria woon, het haar drie burgerwe in ongeveer 2000 aan Groep 10 van Rustenburg verkoop. Dié groep, wat skynbaar nie meer bestaan nie, het aansoek gedoen om die drie erwe te konsolideer en te ontwikkel. Die Makhado Munisipaliteit het bevestig dat die konsolidasie van erwe 982, 984 en 986 tot erf 5086, asook dat die daaropvolgende onderverdeling daarvan, goedgekeur is tydens ‘n raadsvergadering van 19 Oktober 1998. Die ontwikkelaar het vervolgens die grond herverdeel in 14 gedeeltes, waarvan die meeste vandag al bebou is. Twee toegangstrate is goedgekeur en genoem gedeelte (4) en (11) van erf 5086. Die Raad het besluit dat, ná die onderverdeling, die ontwikkelaar die straatjies moet teer en dat die eienaarskap daarvan dan na die Raad terugkeer. Die twee strate is met sement uitgelê. Hierdie groep fietsryers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt het eerste balkies vir fietsry ontvang tydens die skool se kwartaallikse prysuitdeling op 13 Oktober. Voor, van links na regs, is Lukie Enslin, Mynhardt van Dijkhorst, PJ Greyling, Marno van Zyl en Royston Fernandez. Agter is Lian van Emmenis, Francois Labuschagné, Jaco Pretorius, Kombo Bere, Kunj Desai, Chris Knoesen en Shoni Nemavhidi. Bernard Volschenk was afwesig tydens die neem van die foto. The lap-race format of the event saw the various age categories complete a specific number of laps, ranging from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a testing five laps for the junior men. Points were awarded to the top 26 finishers in each race, with the total school scores based on the top five boys in the Boys Team category, top three girls in the Girls Team category, and three boys and two girls respectively in the Mixed Team category. Local riders up against ﬁerce competition Following an exciting 2014 season, fierce competition marked the national finals of the Spur High School Moun tain Bike League that was hosted at Bekker School in Magaliesburg on 4 and 5 October. Louis Trichardt High School was well represented at the final, with a total number of five local high school riders forming part of the 13-riders Limpopo high school team. The five local riders were Richard

Lambert, Douglas Archer (completing his year as rider for High School Louis Trichardt, although he now studies at Ridgeway College), Heine de Jager, Charne Labuschagne and Turner de Swart. A record number of 355 riders representing the cream of high school mountain bike riders from 69 schools across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe competed in the two-day event. Up against such fierce competition, it was only Richard

Lambert who could secure a top-10 finish in his age group (sub junior), managing an eighth place. The team from Menlopark High School was in top form and secured four podium positions, as well as logging a number of top-10 positions to secure both the girls and mixed team national championship trophies, while Grey College in Bloemfontein won the boys team category.
