Vhembe bus operators speak in one voice Bus operators functioning under the auspices of the Vhembe Bus Operators Association met at the weekend to discuss matters that affect their daily work. During a meeting held in a bus at the Thohoyandou Bus Rank, more than 40 drivers and general workers elected a committee that will represent them. According to the spokesperson of the organisation, Mr Richard Muofhe, workers in the sector were not united and could not
voice their concerns to the employer in unity. “We have been faced with many challenges for a long time, with no one to present our case to the employer. We decided to form a structure that would represent our needs at the workplace. As drivers, we are not even covered for funerals and our families have to struggle in cases of our members dying,” he added He said many of their members were even forced to drive unroadworthy buses which were
not only a danger to themselves, but also to the commuters. “We do not have the power to say no, as it would mean instant dismissal.”He said the employers did not see them as part of the business but only saw money in them. Even the language used by the employer was abusive, fit for small children. According to him, they are in constant talks with the employer and hope that the new organisation will improve the relations between them.
