The wave from the ocean and a building with high level on the site are the two elements standing for the dynamic and static condition. Also the wave sculpture on the site inspires the form of the pavilion. B2 DESIGN_ Boathouse Halifax NS Atlantic Ocean is one of the natural powers to make the city Halifax attractive. The city space is complicated and diversified with different historical elements intertwined like the form of chromosome inside. This is a couple’s weekend house which is located at the corner of West Street and Agricola Street. The local context of this house is based on the Halifax climate. The boat and the seashell are the two main elements which ignite my inspiration of design strategy. The entire building is finished in one texture of brush-finished mortar, creating a continuous surface inside to out. In this case, the architectural language is working by “slimy fluid” concept; replacing the standard architectural parlance in which floors, walls and ceilings are separately articulated. B2 DESIGN_ Tree House Halifax NS This is a scholar house for accommodation in Dalhousie University. The site is located at the Sexton Campus which is besides a burial ground. The intention of the design is to use the local material of trees on the site and the memory stone in the burial ground to create an organic form. The ideas come from a photo of cavity called “womb of Buddha” which I took in Su Zhou, China, because the material and form of this cavity is natural and organic which corresponding to my original idea. Transferring from two dimensional lines to three dimensional volumes is my principle to design this house. B3 DESIGN_ Hydrostone Music Room Halifax NS Living in the city of Halifax, we have to treat the massive parts of history equally, be it the old Hydrostone buildings or the new wood houses. My design intention of the historical hydrostone site is to gather people from different directions of the streets into the community centre and encourage people to tour the space and engage in the flowing cultural context connecting the community space and the city exterior. The architecture makes full use of the open space while corresponding to its neighbourhood. The building creates two layers horizontally: The steel frame skin of the music room in the centre represents the facade of the hydrostone and the series unit blocks made of wood frame and cedar shingle correspond to the wood house neighbourhood. The skylight between the music room and the unit blocks abstract the natural sunlight and make it possible for People to move in this building from all around to experience and enjoy the sharp contrast posed by the old architecture and the new ones, the natural and the artificial sceneries. B5 DESIGN_ Ferry Terminal + Industrial Museum Dartmouth NS "In public buildings Dartmouth has no grounds for boastfulness." but dartmouth was an industry based community comprised of foundries, mills, factories, refineries, shipyards, and dozens of small family-run consumer-based enterprises. " ---By H.S. Congdon Retired dartmouth school principal, 1919 The design intention is to connect the history of the Dartmouth and the Ferry terminal. Circulation, in this case, became really important factor. I applied the Mobius Strip as the my original strategy because for me, it has a meaning of connection between the history and present. I also want the building to be an icon in Dartmouth. M1 DESIGN_ Kentiville Library NS M2 DESIGN_ New Church Hall Halifax NS THESIS_Meditation Centre Peggy’s Cove NS This thesis investigates meditation theory and the natural context of Peggy’s Cove, as well as material and tectonic experiments, to design a New Meditation Centre in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia. The design of the New Meditation Center proposes building as a new form of architecture, the form, material and construction of which engages the viewer to admire and respect our nature. THESIS_Meditation Centre Peggy’s Cove NS Meditation means awareness. It is a process inducing a series of steps, that leads to a state of consciousness which brings serenity and clarity. While the space we choose for meditating needs to reflect the state of clear mind, if possible, it should be isolated from the noisy city and in a natural pure land.
