History: Then and Now

History of the Sarasota Chalk Festival

T

he 2012 Sarasota Chalk Festival is a 10-day cultural event celebrating the performance art form of street painting, when artists use the pavement as their canvas and pastel chalk as their medium. The public is invited to participate, attend and interact with the artists as they go about their work. “The festival is as raw as it gets to feeling and seeing an outdoor museum in motion as fine artists take to their hands and knees for days, recreating old master paintings, original works of art and 3D compositions right before our eyes,” states Artistic Director and Event Chair Denise Kowal. The festival is free for all to participate in and attend, and it draws customers to local businesses in Sarasota, by refusing to sell space to outside vendors. It pays for travel expenses, lodging and supplies of artists who are approved early and uses quality sustainable products, so that although our artists may get dirty, everything else is kept clean. The Sarasota Chalk Festival’s success relies on four different contributors: dedicated volunteers, generous sponsors, passionate artists and enthusiastic visitors. The experience is rewarding; so why not consider joining us in spreading art, happiness and creativity in Sarasota?

Our theme for 2012

This year’s Sarasota Chalk Festival is turning to the circus for inspiration. “Circus City: USA” is a tribute to, and { 6 } 2012 Sarasota Chalk Festival | VISIT CHALKFESTIVAL.ORG

celebration of, the circus, which decided to make Sarasota its winter home in the 1920s. The festival aims to bring people back to a time when residents would glow with anticipation as the trains rolled into town carrying circus families from around the world, along with their elaborate costumes, massive tents and exciting props with which to practice their fearless acts. The festival is set to run for 10 days, from Oct. 28 to Nov. 6, with the main festivities happening from Nov. 1 to Nov. 5. It will feature two music stages and a performance stage showcasing music, drama, dance, acrobatic and aerial performances and, as usual, it is free for all to participate in and attend.

History of the festival

Denise Kowal, president of the Burns

Square Property Owners Association, founded and sponsored the first Avenida de Colores Burns Square Chalk Festival in November 2007, with 22 artists and 5,000 people attending. At that time, the Children’s Chalk Playground, run by artist Jill Hoffman-Kowal, was the most popular area. Of the 22 participants that year, only three had street-painting experience: experienced street painters Lori Escalera, Kitty Dyble-Thompson and Mike Kasun. These artists were all instrumental in the progress and development of the festival. The second festival, held in May 2009, had already expanded considerably with more than 75 street painters attending, many of them experienced street painters who traveled to Sarasota from all over the country. Various fringe events began to complement the street painting. There was a performance stage that featured non-stop performances

History: Then and Now by local bands and professional sword swallower Johnny Fox. The children’s magic camp, Camp Cigma, also performed at various points throughout the festival, as did various poets, dancers and models. The festival was beginning to really engage with the local community. 2010 was a big turning point, with the festival becoming the first international-streetpainting festival in the United States. By now, it had evolved into its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and with more than 250 artists in attendance, it was fast becoming an important fixture in the annual events calendar of Sarasota. That year, three artists created oversized 3D street paintings. The street painting group, Art After Hours, created a giant 20-foot-by40-foot skullduggery; Tracy Lee Stum from California created an interactive “Mousetrap” that measured a whopping 60 feet by 30 feet with a two-point perspective; and German artist Edgar Mueller created the first photoluminescent street painting containing dual imagery with a massive 100-foot-by-40-foot piece that showed a giant by day and a fetus by night. The 2010 festival was met with such positivity that the city of Sarasota requested that roads remain open after the festival to give the public a chance to view the finished works for one more day. The 2011 festival focused on “Pavement Art Through the Ages” and attracted

a whopping 200,000 visitors to downtown Sarasota, giving the local economy a boost of $6 million to $10 million. With more than 500 artists participating, the festival was the most important contemporary street painting venue in the world. That year saw Leon Keer and a crew from Planet Street Painting create a giant 3D chalk representation of China’s terracotta army with LEGO. Artist Michael Kirby created the first chalk opera “set” for Sarasota Opera to perform “Madame Butterfly.” Artists with Art After Hours created the first augmented reality street painting with hummingbirds suspended above visitors sitting within the artwork. Lectures and workshops were performed by the world-renowned innovator of 3D pavement art, Kurt Wenner. Melanie Stimmel created a mermaid sanctuary, while artist Kumpa Twornprom provided live mermaids. That was also the year the festival went

orld-renowned artist and innovator of 3D pavement art, Kurt Wenner created a premiere original composition using an entirely new technique for this year’s festival. More than a dozen local, national and international artists from Japan, Mexico, Germany and Italy have been selected to work with Wenner. Artists will use a mixture of mediums and surface levels to complete this complicated and intricately designed premier masterpiece by Wenner. Artists will work from Oct. 28 ’till Nov. 1 to complete the artwork and then welcome the public from Nov. 2 to Nov. 6, to enter the artwork and become a part of the scene. Wenner’s work was the subject of National Geographic’s 1985 awardwinning documentary, “Masterpieces in Chalk.” He is the recipient of the Kennedy Center Medallion in recognition of his outstanding contributions to arts education. In 1984, Wenner invented an art form all his own that has

Artist Bio

come to be known as anamorphic or 3D pavement art. Inspired by the use of great European masters and the use of perspective, Wenner invented a new geometry to create compositions that appear to rise from, or fall into, the ground. In traditional anamorphic perspective, painted forms appear correct when viewed from one point in space. Wenner’s geometry corrects the specific distortion caused by viewing his large images at an oblique angle. This type of geometry has come to be known as Wenner’s hyperbolic perspective. Wenner’s installation will be the second time he has created an oversized original composition with some of the best street

painters in the world. His last composition was a 15-foot-by-75-foot street painting based on “The Last Judgment for Pope John Paul II,” who sanctioned pavement art as an official form of sacred art. Assisting artists include: local Sarasota artists Skip Dyrda and David Brancato; local student Patricia Armstrong; Vera Bugatti, of Italy; Lori Escalera, of California; Fabio Fedele, of Italy; Julie Kirk-Purcell, of California; Luigi Legno, of Italy; Ruben Martinez, of Mexico; Lorelle Miller, of California; Tomoteru Saito, of Japan; Carolyn Schultz, of Florida; Valentina Sforzini, of Italy; Melanie Stimmell, of California; Joel Yau, of California; and Marion Ruthardt, of Germany.

3D, Perspective, Anamorphic and Illusion Pavement Art

Sunday, Oct. 28 to Tuesday, Nov. 6 • 500 S. Pineapple Avenue area

The world’s most talented 3D artists have showcased their best works during the Sarasota Chalk Festival in the past, and this year is certain to welcome incredible talent again. More than a dozen internationally known pavement artists will bring into view original 3D compositions, as viewers can watch these distorted and unusual paintings come into proper perspective when viewed from a specific angle point. These works, which fool your eye, take several days for the artists to complete. The creative development, scale, distortion, perspective and illusion, as the works are created, are a performance worth watching and a lesson in mathematics and patience. When completed,

the artist steps outside the scene and allows you to become the performer by becoming a part of the scene and having your photograph taken. You can share your experience with friends, thus leaving a lasting impression of this mind-bending ephemeral art form.

Going Vertical

Various locations around the city

The festival took things vertical in 2011, adding another dimension to the Sarasota Chalk Festival that explores a genre, which began as a form of subversive public communication that has become legitimate. The event welcomes painters, spray-can artists and airbrush artists through an application process to create works of art, both permanent and temporary, on consenting private walls throughout the city. Artists from France were brought to the festival last year to introduce the cellograff art form on American soil and will once again be performing. At the festival, artists and beginners are also encouraged to try their skills and create works of art on oversized wood and cellophane panels that will be available throughout the weekend of Nov. 3 to Nov. 4.

In one of his most daring stunts since successfully crossing Niagara Falls this summer, Nik Wallenda will be performing a daring act with his beautiful wife, Erendira, at the festival. They will be testing the high-wire line created by artists Anthony Cappetto, Wendy Stum and Shawn McCann before anyone else is allowed to try this death-defying feat! Come watch this nail-biting stunt as Wallenda makes high-wire walking look as easy as walking down the road! Immediately following Wallenda’s crossing, Christine Robinson, chair of the County Commission, and Suzanne Atwell, city of Sarasota mayor, will make their first high-wire walk attempt together. ‘Recreating Creativity’: Kurt Wenner lecture — introduction by Lazy Fairy Improv

C

9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 3 • Burns Court Cinema, 506 Burns Lane Tickets $35 online; $50 at the door. Limited seating available

ontemporary society has begun to realize that creativity is a vital part of human intelligence that may determine the success or failure of an individual or even of a nation in the next decades. Our very definition of creativity is so flawed, however, that it is difficult or even impossible to effectively insert it into our educational systems. Stripping away our historical preconceptions about what creativity is and how it operates is a vital step toward constructing a new educational paradigm that will finally allow us to effectively enable our students to manifest their dreams in the physical world. Kurt Wenner has spent a lifetime creating art form, works of art and architecture, as well educational programs in a vast array of venues and media. Central to his own creative process is the knowledge of both classicism and artist’s geometry — two subjects that have been removed from general education in our century. Using his own experience as an example, Wenner will illustrate how a new approach to the idea of creativity can lead to an infinite number of discoveries and inventions. A healthy and fresh vision of the creative process is essential for the empowerment of the next generation. Wenner is the recipient of the Kennedy Center Medallion in recognition of his outstanding contribution to arts education. He is the innovator of 3D pavement art that

was documented by National Geographic in 1985 with the award-winning documentary, “Masterpieces in Chalk.” In traditional anamorphic perspective, painted forms appear correct when viewed from one point in space. Wenner’s geometry corrects the specific distortion caused by viewing his large images at an oblique angle. This type of geometry has come to be known as Wenner’s hyperbolic perspective.
When Pope John Paul II arrived in Mantua, Italy, Wenner was commissioned to create an original composition for a 15-foot-by-75-foot street painting based on “The Last Judgment.” The pope signed the painting, thus officially sanctioning pavement art as an official form of sacred art.

Student Chalk Block

Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 4 • Dolphin Avenue between Orange and Pineapple avenues Students are an integral part of the Chalk Festival and bring fresh creative ideas, strategy and style to their performance as emerging artists. They are mentored by those who have been creating pavement art for years and admired by spectators. During the festival, they take over Dolphin Avenue and turn it into a collage of color. Because of generous sponsors, they are provided all their supplies, food and water plus mentorship that includes a class on pavement art etiquette, mediums, techniques and skills to help them advance their pavement-art abilities during the festival. A performance stage and other activities will be located close to the Student Chalk Block. Students can sign up anytime at chalkfestival.org/artists/apply/.

‘How Controversy Can Build Community’ with David Anderson Hooker Sunday, Nov. 4

Join us for a facilitated conversation about the controversial work of MTO. Festival organizers believe that art can be the catalyst for strengthening communities. We are inviting the community to an open dialogue to discuss the 2011 Fast Life mural and how public art and those things that challenge us, eventually, can strengthen us. Festival organizers are welcoming David Anderson Hooker, from the Fanning Institute, to moderate the conversation. He is an attorney, mediator and facilitator. For more than 25 years, Hooker has assisted individuals, groups and communities who needed to conduct important conversations on difficult

subjects. He has worked with communities, local and state governments on implementing community dialogue around issues of public policy and social concern. Formerly “Cinco de Mayo”

Please Support Us

The Sarasota Chalk Festival is an entirely volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization without any paid staff. We harness thousands of people’s time, energy and resources together to make sure this event remains free for all to participate and attend. And we cannot do it without you — our visitors! During the event, our novelty and refreshment sales help us pay for all the costs we have associated with this cultural event, such as airfares for artists, food, art supplies, security services, hotel rooms, insurance, equipment, amenities, services and the list goes on. Our budget is more than $1 million, and it is because of the generous support of our artists, sponsors and volunteers, as well as our visitors that we can keep this festival going. Please support us by donating, purchasing our items we have for sale and telling others about the work we do. We believe bringing diverse people together to celebrate, inspire and be inspired is an important aspect of creating a sense of place and community. We thank you for being a part of our community and hope to win your support! You can shop online, too, at chalkfestival.org. To our volunteers, artists and visitors — Thank You!
