THE

NEWS OF THE WORLD LEADER IN ESSENTIAL OILS

Volume 4.9 September 2014

Northern Lights

Founder’s Message IN EARLY AUGUST Mary and I were able to spend a few days with our growing force of leaders at the Silver Retreat. I love this time because I am able to share the excitement with so many members who are seeing our St. Maries farm for the first time, where our Seed to Seal foundation began. Surely, they will carry home a burning torch that will light a fire within so many. What a wonderful time to be together. However, our time was too short and it was tough to say good-bye. But something truly amazing was on the horizon: the new Young Living Northern Lights Aromatic Farm in British Columbia. The location is breathtaking, as thousands of trees cover the hills and mountains like a rolling turf that never ends. The groundbreaking is just beginning, and the work is intense with the pressure to get the forms up and cement poured before winter. But the results: Black Spruce, a critical oil that we are all waiting for with great excitement. Immense work lies ahead and I am thrilled with the response of so many who want to help. It will take a mighty working team to beat the harsh winter in time to be ready to distill. I look forward to seeing many of you there. My commitment is to provide you with the best essential oils on the planet—even if it means buying the land and developing an entire farm and distillery dedicated solely to that purpose. With a new distillery and more than 400 acres of property dense with black spruce trees, we won’t have any shortage of oil because of our Northern Lights Farm. Sincerely,

Young Living’s Newest Farm THE EXCITEMENT IS mounting as word of our new Young Living Northern Lights Aromatic Farm in British Columbia spreads. Gary broke ground in July and now it’s a race to get the building up to be able to work during the cold winter months to bring together all the components that will put the distillery into operation. In addition to the distillery, the fabulous plans include building a drying plant for the distilled chips to make pellets for wood burning stoves, which are in great demand (a most unique facet of the operation); a conference and education centre with about 20 guest rooms; a visitor centre, campground, and RV park; and, naturally, our spectacular floral water spa that you can experience only at a Young Living farm. Just imagine settling down into the spa water filled with micro molecules of oil from the distillation and enjoying the dancing show of the northern lights. Nowhere in the world but here! It is a huge undertaking, but Gary has drawn the plans; so the future holds a lot of excitement for our Canadian members and all those who come to visit. But first things first, and that is to produce oil—Black Spruce oil—and everything comes after that. Black Spruce is a conifer oil of untold power and strength that adds much to several blends and other products that only Young Living produces. The story is unique as only Gary Young can tell it.

In His Own Words In early June 2014, I set out to find black spruce trees. Our members were quickly outbuying our supply, and that meant it was time for me to focus on the trees of the great northern Canadian territories and build a new distillery. We flew to many areas as I looked for the trees and the “right” place to build. I was drawn to Fort Nelson, British Columbia, because of the time that I drove the Alcan (Alaska-Canadian) Highway when I was logging and drove through this small town. I thought I would find black spruce trees there, so I was anxious to go exploring. When we landed, I was told that about 286 acres of land might be for sale about 7 miles northwest of Fort Nelson, with potential farming land to cultivate ledum, conyza ( fleabane), and goldenrod, as well as yarrow, which is growing naturally all over, along with acres of black spruce. The land is beautiful with several different streams that we can divert into the reservoir for all of our water needs. I was told that government officials were hard to work with and did not like approving building permits. I chose to see no obstacles; and after a very friendly meeting, we negotiated a contract that closed this month. However, I was given the go-ahead to start work immediately, as they also understood the weather constraint.

Another possible obstacle came when the Forest Service told me my biggest challenge was to get approval from the First Nations, comprised of a large number of tribal council members. So I called them and drove out to meet with the chief and his council. The chief and I started talking about plants and natural medicine, and he told me about how his grandfather used to take him in the woods to get plants for medicine when he was young. It seemed like we had always been friends. He was so excited and thrilled with our project and said, “Mr. Young, you just tell me what you need, and our whole tribe will be there to help.” A blessing? A miracle? “My friend” knows we need Black Spruce oil. When we had all the approvals, the government officials had one more request. They asked us if we would farm and cultivate an additional 100 plus acres of the frontage along the roadsides of the land to the farm to keep them from being unsightly with tree regrowth, since the long 18-hour summer days accelerate the tree growth, weeds, and all of the plants. Another blessing. Jim Powell, Chip Kouwe, and Scott Schuler came to my rescue and flew up with me after Silver Club. Our pilot, Marc Harris, also wanted to help and discovered a new talent for farming and operated the big excavator like a natural. Marc was on one excavator; Scott was on the big loader, loading trucks and moving dirt; I was on the D-6 dozer, clearing land and building roads; and Chip was on the 330 Cat excavator, digging the reservoir and basement for the distillery. Jacob and Chip often traded jobs when I was surveying. Josef was on the compactor and when he wasn’t on that gigantic machine (so it seemed to him), he helped Dad with the surveying. Jim drove the big dump truck, moved a lot of dirt, and hauled the shale for the distillery base and other needed areas from a nearby mountain that had a steep road that would scare a mountain goat, but not Jim. He even ate lunch in the truck while he was being loaded to keep everything moving. Mary brought lunch and dinner, ran around town doing paperwork, found a big house to rent, opened a bank account, and helped Josef and Dad survey. Northern Lights, continued on page 2

Northern Lights continued from page 1 (It was a remarkable team working together with a lot of laughter and sweat. Gary and Mary made breakfast (mostly Gary) in the hotel room at 6 a.m., and then they headed out and worked until 9 or 10 p.m., while there was still light. It was an exhausting week but so much was accomplished.) Even our land residents enjoyed watching and often stood by grazing, undisturbed by the noise of roaring machines. Our buffalo herd of six, including a new calf, will be a fun side attraction, if you are lucky enough to see them. They only charged past the pile of wood we were standing on once. It was exciting to feel the ground shake as they thundered by us. After three days enough land was cleared for the reservoir, road, distillery, drying plant, conference centre and accommodation complex, office, and visitor centre. Then we started to DIG. By the time we left, because we were all traveling to France for the Diamond Retreat, the distillery basement was dug out 12 feet deep and 70 by 55 feet in length and width. The overall distillery site is 95 by 70 feet with 10 feet of dirt fill with 40 by 70 feet for the truck bay, where the chips will be unloaded into the cookers. It was a LOT of dirt to move and compact. Then the shale rock went on top of that 16 inches deep, and it is now ready for forms and then cement. It took about eight days to dig out the reservoir with everyone working on it. When Marc flew Scott and Chip out, it was just Gary and the boys at the site with Jim, who was able to stay and continue hauling shale and dirt. It was fabulous watching Gary and Jacob on the excavators and Josef on the D-5 bulldozer, with Mary taking pictures as they finished the reservoir in the last hours of light the evening before flying home. It was an amazing experience for all of us, and it would not have happened without these dedicated friends being there. I want everyone to know how proud I am of our Diamonds who came on a moment’s notice to help me. The feeling of love and appreciation was nothing short of overwhelming. I want to have at least 100 acres cleared, so we can plant crops this autumn. Many native people are going to help us plant ledum, which means we will have our first cultivated ledum for next year. I also intend to plant yarrow and goldenrod. The soil is so rich and nutrient black that we will be able to cultivate many other crops,

as I determine what will grow well and what we need. There are also other trees such as white spruce, a different balsam that is so rich in aroma that it burns your eyes when you walk through it, tamarack, and who knows what else I might find.

The Need For Another Farm

Many other companies make claims about their abundant and pure oils, but what I can tell you is that the number of farms growing plants is not increasing. The fact is that farms are shutting down and selling out because the young people do not want to farm or take over from their fathers. However, the demand for oils continues to grow; so ask yourself, how are these other companies getting their oils? Trees and plants do not grow and produce oil every month, except tropical plants like ylang ylang and sandalwood; but even then they have their recycling dormant periods for two months out of the year. Plants are not like a laboratory that manufactures oils daily. About 85 percent of oil-producing crops and trees produce only one crop or harvest a year, subject to the weather and natural conditions of Mother Nature. This is exactly why I do what I do, because we at Young Living are committed to providing the best quality essential oils in the world. That is why we go to the great expense and time of developing the farms to distill the plant material needed to ensure you have not just the best but unquestionably, the very best. Not 1, not 100 other companies give the commitment to their members that Young Living does. You have something to believe in that is real. We have a mission that is spreading worldwide. We have a responsibility to take care of each other, to uplift and support each other. It takes tremendous commitment for the work that follows; but when things are meant to happen, they happen. Young Living is the world leader in essential oils, and great is the reward and the joy for those who are part of that mission. Thank you all for your commitment, dedication, and support in joining me in this great adventure of changing lives! — D. Gary Young

DGYF: Dream Builders

Get Your Beauty On! Dear Member: You’re invited to join us October 3–4 for our latest Beauty School event! Held at the Swiss-inspired Zermatt Resort in scenic Midway, Utah, this special event offers education, networking, and relaxation you will find nowhere else. The Beauty School will deliver two days of unique training, experiences, and goodies, including:

THIS SCHOOL YEAR is a time for big celebrations at the Young Living Academy in Chongon, Ecuador, as the school gets ready to have its first class of graduating seniors in 2015! To so many Young Living members who helped make this dream possible through the child sponsorship programme, thank you; we know watching your students graduate will be a day of gratitude and excitement for you! Since 2011 the D. Gary Young Foundation has been changing lives through its child sponsorship programme for the academy. This programme encourages Young Living members to sponsor students at the school through generous monthly donations; and, in turn, students receive an American-standard education in grades Pre-K through 11. Every student at the academy is currently sponsored, but because the expenses for the children to attend the academy are over double the amount of a child sponsorship, the DGYF is working to now double-sponsor each child. From our members’ efforts during the 2014 International Grand Convention, there were 62 new child sponsors; and from the 10-day matching campaign, another 29, which was doubled to 58. This is amazing! For just $75 per month, Young Living members can sponsor a child and build a direct relationship. Sponsors receive a picture of and basic information about their sponsored student, including the student’s email address. Students have a school assignment every two weeks to email their sponsors; and when members qualify to attend the Master Leader Retreat, they will travel to the academy and meet the students. If you’d like to change lives in a real way and build a lifelong relationship, you can choose to have your donation be automatically deducted from your monthly commission check. The Silver Retreat

Discovering Young Living’s Soul DEEP IN THE mountain valleys of St. Maries, Idaho, hundreds of new Young Living Silvers found something mesmerising during an exceptional few days in August. This latest discovery wasn’t a new species of lavender or melissa. It wasn’t the magical key to success. What they found was the soul of Young Living, the heartbeat of a company, and a movement that is running insatiably in the pursuit of changing lives and bettering the world through worldclass products and opportunity.

Sure, there were fun and adventurous whitewater raft rides down the Spokane River; learning sessions with Young Living executives and top-earners, including Cheri Ross and Adam Green; lavender harvesting; and a host of networking moments. But what so many were impressed with was the feeling they had being at the home of Young Living, where the Seed to Seal commitment began. “Being at the farm, you immediately get the feeling of Young Living,” said Peter Craig from Austin, Texas. “Seeing

the farm, the fields, and the mountains in the background is inspiring and fills me with a sense of gratitude that this is just the beginning.” Of course, it wouldn’t feel like home without Gary and Mary Young. The founders captivated the Silvers with stories from the past and exciting visions of the future. They spoke about Young Living’s intent to do good, to enhance lives, and to honour God. With one moment, Gary Young unveiled the true core value of Young Living when he said, “I never create a product to sell. I create a product for a purpose.” Young Living creates products for a purpose. That purpose may be different for everyone who uses the product, but Gary’s purpose is to make people’s lives better.

“I was watching Gary present in the lodge; and I could feel my dad, who passed away 20 years ago, in the room with me,” said Rosemary Hyde from Ogden, Utah. “My dad taught me to know the plants and the trees and to have a relationship with them, just like Gary says. It was a very spiritual thing. I feel like where Young Living is now goes right to the core of where I came from and what I was taught. It’s been a really neat time.” Rachel Tschida, who met Gary for the first time at the retreat, said, “Gary is so passionate about everything he does, and it was amazing to see it in person. Knowing that someone who cares so much and has so much passion is leading Young Living means everything. Young Living is life-changing, and to share it is worth everything.”

I never create a product to sell. I create a product for a purpose. — D. Gary Young
