Editor’s Letter

A

utumn marks the season of new beginnings; a new school year, a new job or even just returning from a summer full of adventures. In this issue we were inspired by men. Not just as a respective counter part to a woman, a Ying to her Yang if you will. But by their clothes and the new generation of Menswear designers who are filling the void left by some of the more well known bigger house’s mens lines. Here we talk to emerging menswear designer Shaun Samson, on his current A/W collection. His line featuring mixed textiles and a strong colour palette caught my eye earlier this year, and I instantly fell in love. Lastly our Editorials feature the best of mixing menswear with the delicateness of womenswear and the contrast between the two. For us at XO, autumn marks the new beginnings of the magazine. We are now taking on subscriptions and launching a online platform in which readers can contribute and feature their talent and possibly be considered for a issue. Also you can send over reader letters and tell us what you liked about the current issue and what you would like to see more of! So as you are heading back to the groove of things, I hope you enjoy the current fashion season, trying out new things, listen to new music and most of all just live, and do what it is that makes YOU happy. Enjoy, Le’Keisha Sims Editor in Chief XO Magazine

Mad Men.

With a collection inspired by Workmen and Cholos; Shaun Samson's menswear line isn’t for the average Joe. XO magazine chats with Shaun, about his line and what inspires him

Tell us about yourself, back ground, basically who are you? I was a little boy in California with big dreams I didn't know were available to me in reality. !I went with the wind and ended up in London, launching my first collection at London Fashion Week. What got you into designing? I wasn't as tall as i wanted to be growing up, so I altered my clothes to fit me better and to make me look more proportionate. !That's when i started to learn about clothing and how they're made, and learned I could alter the way clothes were designed to make them work for me. You studied at both Central Saint Martins and FIDM, what were your experiences like there? Do you feel that design school is the way for young designers to go? I learned a great deal from both schools, and couldn't be where I'm at today without having gone to both. !I can't speak for other designers because we all approach fashion differently, but design school for me was one of the best times creatively and socially. !There is no other place where I would have been able to meet so many talented and creative people from so many different parts of the world. But there's also no better experience than to learn cutting at a couturier or a tailors. We are ultimately in charge of our own destiny, design school or not. What is the aesthetic of the Shaun Samson line? !A Major in High Culture with a Minor in Street Cool. Who do you see wearing your clothes? People that I'm too intimidated to approach and talk too.

What was the inspiration for the Autumn 2011 collection? American workwear meets Cholos in Prison. We were attracted to your clothes, not only because they're amazing for men but they can also work on women as well, a lot of your longer shirts could work with simply a belt and heels, do you think about women wearing your clothes? Sure, why not? You used many different fabrics with this collection, what inspired the wool, sweater, cotton pants? They're AMAZING by the way! ! All of the fabrics were references from what I was researching. Cotton is a very masculine material that they also use in prison uniform, and plaids come from both workwear and gang wear. What is your advice for designers who are just starting out/people wanting to become designers? Be humble. Know and respect where you come from.
