So, why should we hire you? By Jenny Mendoza CDO Marketing & Communications Intern
This can be an extremely intimidating question to answer in an interview, especially when we don’t know what kind of competition we are up against! Often when potential job candidates are asked this question, they summarize their past work experiences and maybe say something like: “With six years working in finance, and my record of saving companies money, I’m confident that I would be a great addition to this team.” For us college students who do not have extensive work experience to describe, how can we demonstrate that we are competent and capable of performing up to expectations? We need to highlight our personal skills and what we bring to the table! For any position being able to answer the question by touching on any past experience and expounding on your personal skills will allow employers to see you are the whole package! Here are a few examples of how to speak of past job performances and how you were able to gain new personal skills:

Here are some tips on how to make the most of the Spring Career Fair. • Connect with the recruiters anyway. Ask how to become a top candidate for the job when it becomes available, and if they can connect you to the right department to be considered for positions in the company. • Follow up with the recruiters. Thank them for the information shared and remind them of your career interests. This may help them remember to forward your information to the appropriate department. • Not every company you are interested in will be represented at the Spring Career Fair. Many employers are interested in hiring our students but choose to post their open positions in Xavier’s online system, eRecruiting. Over 4,000 employers are listed in this system and you can look up specific contacts to make connections. • Don’t place all your eggs in one basket. Make sure you visit multiple employers at the fair. As a Human Resources Manager, I am frequently asked, “What are employers looking for?” or “What makes an applicant stand out?” The short answer is soft skills. While hard skills (technical ability such as computer skills, professional training, education, etc.) are still important and may assist you in getting an interview, the soft skills are what will get you the job offer and help you be successful at the job. Let’s explore the top soft skills employers are looking for and how to articulate them in your resume or conversation at the career fair. • Communication (both oral & written) – listening carefully, asking questions, taking notes, ability to change your style of communication to fit the situation, ability to explain, proper grammar, instead of complaining about a situation offer constructive feedback and solutions • Teamwork and collaboration skills – work well with others, listening skills, welcoming of others ideas • Leadership skills – self-motivated, lead by example, continually looking for ways to improve, forward thinking • Critical thinking and problem solving – learning from mistakes, see the solution not just the problem, ability to reason and think through situations • Adaptability, flexibility & time management – ability to work under pressure • Showing commitment – taking pride in your work, being dependable, enthusiastic about company and position
Those are some of the soft skills employers are looking for, but how can you show a potential employer which of those skills you possess. Tips and best practices include: • No typos on your resume or cover letter • De-clutter your resume – make sure your objective or summary is clearly defined, list relevant skill sets, use bullet points and short sentences • Write a specific accomplishment on your resume that is an example of the soft skill (i.e. instead of simply stating you are a team player, list a time when you were a part of a team that achieved a specific goal and what role you played) • Emphasize leadership positions you have held • Use proper grammar • Make eye contact, approach the employer, ask questions • Be confident in your elevator pitch and be clear and concise • Use concrete examples to point out a variety of skills • Know your strengths and talk about them Take time to determine which soft skills are your strengths and identify those that you would like to learn, improve, or enhance. Find a mentor, attend a workshop, take a class, and look for opportunities or experiences to build the skills (i.e., volunteer or work experience). Doing so will make you more attractive to employers, help you stand out from other candidates, and possibly be what lands you that job offer!

Matt Raeber has an answer. Demonstrating dedication and ambition, Matt’s career path started long before purchasing his graduation cap and gown. His first step? Evaluating what he loves to do and figuring out how to apply it to the real world. While in high school, Matt learned about the actuarial field from one of his teachers who had worked as an actuary at an insurance company. After researching the field, he decided on actuarial science as his major. Actuarial Science applies math and statistics to assess risks within professional fields, such as insurance. At the end of last year, Matt added a second major in finance. Matt scheduled his first visit to the Career Development Office (CDO) this past September as he began to prepare applications for a summer internship.
