ABOUT EU HOLIDAYS EU Holidays was founded by a group of experienced directors passionate about their work in the travel industry. They wanted to do something new that could better serve the travel needs of consumers, which is the main driving force behind the establishment of our travel agency. VISION AND MISSION

PROGRESS AND MILESTONES

EU Holidays devotes our whole energy towards focusing on long haul package tours, which is our main differentiating factor from other travel agencies. We narrowed our attention to areas such as Europe, USA, Middle East and some of the more exotic locations as these are the leading travel destinations for locals in recent years. At EU Holidays, we want to establish our position as the leading professional agency that specializes in Europe and USA leisure travel package tours for the local market. In EU Holidays, we want to take the hassle out of travelling, so as to let our customers fully experience their vacation without worrying over any details. Whether it is to relax and relieve stress, enjoy fun and exciting activities, explore new places, or learn and discover new knowledge, EU Holidays has a wide variety of itineraries that is sure to satisfy your travel needs. We want EU customers to have faith that each time they book with EU Holidays, they will be embarking on the best adventure of their lives. At EU Holidays, we take pride in providing our customers with excellent service by undergoing professional training and motivation courses and workshops. EU customers can easily meet our friendly and reliable staff face-to-face at the various travel fairs, outdoor roadshows and events that we participate in. Our staffs are all committed to go the extra mile to please our customers and give them their dream vacation.

Within five years of business operations, we have expanded EU Holidays and opened up three other subsidiary offices to focus on the various needs of our customers. The EU MICE office was set up in 2013 to cater for corporate travel with a focus on corporate meetings, conventions and events. In that same year, EU Asia was launched to cater for customers who are interested in travelling within Asia. In the following year, we opened up EU Vacations to serve the Malaysian market. In doing so, EU Holidays strives to constantly improve our products and services so that we can better serve our customers. Despite being a young company, EU Holidays has gained significant recognition from both customers and industry professionals. Founded in late 2010, EU Holidays was voted Top MasterCard Supporter in NATAS Travel, from as early as 2012 for four consecutive years. After just two years in business, EU Holidays was presented with two valuable awards – the Asia Excellence Award 2013 and the Singapore Excellence Award 2013. During the later half of the year, we also received the Singapore Quality Brands 2014 award. Since 2012, EU Holidays was named the ‘Best Travel Agency for Europe and USA Tours’ as voted by readers of ESCAPE! travel magazine. For two years running since 2014, we have also been awarded with the Weekender Travellers’ Choice Award as No. 1 for Europe and USA tours, voted by their readers.

WINTER IN EUROPE

I

f you are putting off your dream holiday to Europe in consideration of the costs, hesitate no further. Travelling to Europe is a lot cheaper in during the winter season, as hotels and attractions have off-season bargains. Europe remains one of the most visited regions in the world. Travelers flocking there during peak travel seasons – especially in summer – have to contend with huge crowds of visitors at popular attractions. In contrast, touring in the chilly season will give you more breathing room to explore Europe’s streets and landmarks when they are cleared of the hordes of tourists. Get greater, more spectacular, close-up views of popular attractions along with quaint and vivid photographs, crowd-free with a gorgeous sprinkling of frost doubling the memorableness of the trip. Embrace the frosty weather and enjoy the special events and

activities that are exclusive to the winter season in Europe. Winter sports are a must-have on a winter trip – take this opportunity to try skiing, snowboarding, sledding or ice-skating, just to name a few. For our winter itineraries, we have arranged for an exclusive sledge run down the longest sledge course in Europe up on Mt. Bussalp with a spectacular view of the highest peaks in Switzerland. Europe is also home to some of the most amazing Christmas markets and festivals, such as the Marche de Noel Christmas Market, where you can find merchants selling handcrafted gift items, Christmas cakes and biscuits, and last but not least, their special mulled wine. Indulge in the festive atmosphere with their beautiful Christmas decorations and illuminations up on display and local musical entertainment.

WHAT TO WEAR

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN

• •

• •

Wear thermals or multiple layers of clothes under a thick winter coat to protect yourself from the cold. Choose waterproof coats to keep your body dry from the wet snow and retain body heat. Accessories like earmuffs, gloves, mittens, hats, scarves and socks are necessary to keep the vulnerable areas of your body from the dangers of frostbite and hypothermia. A thick, sturdy pair of boots is strongly recommended for safe trekking across the snow and ice. Athletic shoes may also suffice in warmer winter weather, but do pair it with thick, high cut socks.

During winter in Europe, humidity levels are 20 per cent lower than that of Singapore, whereas in indoor areas humidity levels may drop up to 50 per cent lower as compared to Singapore due to the heating systems. Do remember to moisturize your skin at intervals to shield it from the dry winter weather and prevent it from cracking. Apply lip balm regularly to keep your lips moisturized as well. This is to ensure maximum comfort during your winter trip. The ozone layer which shields most of the sun’s rays is at its thinnest during winter, and snow and ice are able to reflect up to 80 per cent of UV rays, so sunblock is another essential item to bring along on your trip. It is recommended that you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every 2-3 hours.

he Alps is one of the largest, highest and most extensive mountain range systems in the world. It is located in south-central Europe and extends for approximately 1,200 kilometres starting from the coastline of southern France and continuing through northern Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria before turning southward down into Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro before ending in Albania. Most Alpine peaks range between 1,800 – 2,500 metres above sea level, but hundreds of the highest peaks in the Alps actually exceed altitudes of 4,000 metres, such as Mt. Blanc, Rosa and the Matterhorn.

ondon – a thriving metropolis that is quite unlike anywhere else in the world. As the largest city in Europe, London is not only one of the oldest and top ranking financial centre in the world, but also the political, economic and cultural capital of the United Kingdom. With history stretching back over thousands of years, London perfectly captures the merging of the modern with historic with their iconic attractions and landmarks, among which include four UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey, the Maritime Greenwich, the Tower of London and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Renowned for its vibrant arts and culture scene, London is home to over 170 museums, including 11 national museums, and 857 art galleries, many of which offer free admission. Whatever your interest in art and history, you can be certain you will find a museum that caters to your taste. Looking for something more eclectic? Just head to the streets – we recommend the Leake Street Tunnel in Waterloo – where you will find all sorts of street art and strike up conversations with the artists there. Admirers of theatre, look no further than London’s best theatre scene in West End, where you can take your pick from the famous classic plays and musicals or brand new works. Also named ‘the city of fog’, London is famous for its unpredictable weather, where rain and fog is common due to the humid weather. Learn from the locals and bring along a pair of sunglasses and umbrella in your bag, so that you can enjoy the city without the weather putting a damper on your plans. Embrace the wind, rain and fog as they add on a different enigmatic mood to the usual sights of London.

AMSTERDAM Despite its size, Amsterdam is a city jam packed with history, culture and festivals for everyone.

PHOTO: 123RF/ANATOLIY SAMARA

T

he largest city and capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, is almost like a world of its own. An exceptionally compact city that houses about 820,000 residents, the narrow streets bordered by an infinite array of gabled houses running along the canals form a relaxing and intimate atmosphere that is reminiscent of its 17th century history. This is a city that is best explored on foot, as most of the sites of interests are located within walking distance, or you may prefer to ride a bike (as the locals do) to places further out. One of Amsterdam’s greatest marvel is their complex canal networks that run through the whole city, which means that a canal cruise is a much better way to enjoy the hidden charms that Amsterdam has to offer, rather than a bus tour. One of the main highlights of Amsterdam would be its world-class art museums, among them the Rijksmuseum with the famed Rembrandts, the Van Gogh Museum, the Hermitage Amsterdam and the Stedelijk Museum of modern art. The Anne Frank House is also a must-visit – bringing you back in time to the cramped two-room annex where the Frank family hid from the Nazis for two years during World War II. For the more adventurous soul, you may venture to the notorious Red Light District (locally known as De Wallen) – one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam – reputed for the legal sex and drugs. Stroll through the streets and you will find women sitting in the window parlours to lure business in, as well as a line-up of coffeeshops offering ‘soft’ drugs in the form of cannabis, all perfectly legal. Even if you are not interested in such vices, the Red Light District is also home to other unique and interesting shops and restaurants, as well as the city’s oldest Gothic church, Oude Kerk.

CINQUE TERRE

A

myriad of colours greet you at your first sight of Cinque Terre, a glorious cluster of villages precariously perched atop rocky cliffs overlooking the Liguran Sea. Made up of namely five villages – Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, and together with the surrounding hillside and coastline, they are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Cinque Terre was carefully built upon terraces on the steep rugged cliffs over centuries, and due to its isolated location, the people’s main source of income came from fishing. If you ever wondered about the colourful buildings… well the reason behind that was so that the fishermen working at sea could identify their houses easily and check on their family. Before the advent of tourism in the 19th century which breathed life back into the area, Cinque Terre was actually declining into poverty due to increasing emigration of its people. This utopian town is undoubtedly the best place to escape from the hurried, fast-paced city life for a few days of quiet and relaxation. Cinque Terre remains a favourite destination for both locals and tourists alike, offering a soothing, laid back atmosphere that remains relatively unmarred by modernization and development. Even with the tourist hike to the area, the locals have chosen to limit vehicular access into Cinque Terre, but the five villages remain well-connected via footpaths, trains and boats. So take a gander along the traffic-free streets, stop by to make conversation with the charming locals or head near the sea for a breath of fresh, salty air – and embrace the lazy way of life.
