Recap

Late free throws by Truck Bryant and Kevin Jones helped West Virginia to a 50-44 victory over USF at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. The Mountaineers (19-12, 9-9) won this game at the line, going 18 for 21 overall, including 16 for 16 from their two seniors Bryant and Jones, compared to just 29 percent shooting from the floor when USF was guarding them. In fact, West Virginia’s top three scorers, Jones, Bryant and Deniz Kilicli, combined to make just 10 of 38 from the floor. We shot 28 percent and won, said an incredulous West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. A key sequence in the game came with 39.6 seconds left and West Virginia leading by two, 46-44, when USF’s Jawanza Poland was called for an offensive foul trying to get into the lane. And then on the other end of the floor, Bryant was fouled by Ron Anderson Jr. with 13.5 seconds left as the Mountaineers were trying to run out the clock. Jones finished the game with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the season while Bryant added 16 points 12 of those coming at the line. USF (19-12, 12-6) got 11 from Anthony Collins, the younger brother of former Mountaineer guard J.D. Collins. No other Bulls player reached double figures. West Virginia led South Florida at halftime 24-19 before the Bulls scored the first eight points of the second half to retake the lead.

Shabazz Napier scored 26 points and Jeremy Lamb added 22 to lead Connecticut to a 71-67 overtime victory over West Virginia in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In a repeat of its earlier loss to Connecticut in Hartford back on Jan. 9, West Virginia was unable to hold on to a double-digit second half lead. The Mountaineers led UConn by 10, 46-36, at the midway point in that game but couldn’t close the deal. And it was very much the same deal this time, West Virginia built its lead to 10, 50-40, with 10 minutes remaining on a Truck Bryant 3, but once again WVU couldn’t shut the door. The Mountaineers led by nine, 63-54, with 3:58 remaining before going ice cold. They managed just one field goal for the remainder of regulation (Gary Browne’s) jumper with 1:50 remaining), while Connecticut got nine straight points from Napier to tie the game at 63. The only points West Virginia got from Browne’s jumper through the remainder of the game were two Bryant free throws in overtime. The Mountaineers were 0 of 11 shooting in the overtime period and finished the game 25 of 72 overall for 34.7 percent. It was the ninth time this season West Virginia (19-13) has failed to shoot at least 40 percent from the floor in a game. It was also the seventh time West Virginia had a second half lead only to lose. Besides this loss, the Mountaineers also squandered late leads against Marquette, Louisville, Notre Dame, Connecticut, Baylor and Kent State.

• West Virginia played in its final BIG EAST Championship game. The Mountaineers posted a 12-15 record in BIG EAST Championship games since joining the league in 1996. • Bob Huggins finished with a 7-4 BIG EAST Championship record.

Recap

West Virginia dug itself a big first half hole it couldn’t climb out of and lost 77-54 to seventh-seeded Gonzaga in an NCAA tournament second round game in Pittsburgh. Robert Sacre and Gary Bell Jr. led four double-figure scorers with 14 points each, while Kevin Pangos had 13 and Elias Harris added 10 for the Bulldogs, who shot 56 percent from the floor for the game. The thousands of Mountaineer fans who made the short trip up to Pittsburgh had little to cheer about. West Virginia (19-14) fell behind by 20 during an eight-minute stretch in the first half that saw the Bulldogs outscore West Virginia 18-4 from 11:35 to 3:19. WVU missed six consecutive shots before Kevin Jones converted a layup with 6:22 left to end an 11-0 Bulldogs run. But then Gary Bell Jr. answered with a jumper, followed by a Pangos 3 and a Robert Sacre put-back basket to make it 34-14. Three plays really summed up the evening for the Mountaineers. The first came early in the second half when Bryant tried to score against four Gonzaga players, lost the ball, and it ended up in a breakaway dunk by Guy Landry Edi. A couple minutes later, Elias Harris banked in a 3 from the top of the key to give the Bulldogs a 26-point lead. Then, with six minutes to play, Sam Dower missed a layup with the shot clock winding down. Mike Hart was able to come up with the loose ball and dribbled back behind the 3-point line to knock down a fall-away 3 before the shot clock expired. Gonzaga (26-6) had its biggest lead at 26 points with 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Notebook

• It was the second worst loss in NCAA tournament play by a Bob Huggins coached team. When Huggins was at Cincinnati his Bearcats lost by 24 to Illinois in 2004. It was also West Virginia’s worst loss in the tournament since 1984 when Maryland beat the Mountaineers by 25 in a second round game • The loss ended West Virginia’s season with 19 victories, snapping a streak of eight straight campaigns with at least 20 wins. It was also the fewest wins a Bob Huggins coached team has had since 2003 when his Cincinnati team won 17 games.
