The OU baseball program has a long standing reputation of producing top talent for the professional level and, with 36 players selected in the last six years, the tradition continues. Nine Sooners were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft, including Garrett Richards (above), who was taken in the first round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Richards is the second first round selection in the last three years at OU (Jackson Williams - 2007) and the 17th in program history.

Garrett Richards is the last Sooner to be selected in the first round of MLB’s Amateur Draft in 2009. Richards is the third OU first rounder in the last six years (Jackson Williams - 2007, David Purcey - 2004).

Nine Sooners were drafted in 2009 for the second time in the same season under Sunny Golloway, marking the second best total in OU history (10 in 1998). The nine selections led the Big 12 in 2009.

Former Sooner John Russell (1980-1982) completed his second year as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009. Russell was hired after successful coaching stints in MLB and the minor leagues.
