Welcome to Previews 2.0 Your New Monthly Program Guide

You’ve probably already noticed that this edition of Previews looks a bit different from past issues. In an effort to bring you more accurate program listings and timely stories, Previews will now publish monthly, with a focus on primetime program listings and feature promotions. In each issue of Previews, we will turn the spotlight on a few key programs, outreach activities, and WSIU updates for the month ahead. We’ll also provide stories that focus on our audience members and supporters who are key to sustaining this vital community service. With the new format, we will be able to double the number of Previews issues each year, but the more compact publication will lead to some changes. We are including a text listing of our daytime schedule, but will no longer include CREATE and

WORLD grids. Rather than publish the WSIU Radio schedule in each issue, we’ll highlight radio program changes with feature stories. Please note: you can always find the most up-to-date CREATE and WORLD schedules, along with full program listings for our primary WSIU HD channel and WSIU Radio channels, at www.wsiu.org. Just click the “Television” or “Radio” tabs on our homepage. All of these changes will make preparing your Previews guide more cost-efficient, from production to printing, which means more financial support for the programs you love and the services that directly benefit our communities. If you have any questions or comments about the new Previews guide, please send them to contact@wsiu.org.

Summer Fun for Bored Kids PBSKIDS.ORG/KARTKINGDOM

Photo: Broadway Near You

Are the kids bored this summer? Encourage them to create their own adventures with PBS KIDS’ online world, KART KINGDOM. Children ages 6-9 will gain systems thinking and collaboration skills using curriculumbased games. They can also create, play, and share their own digital games with a junior edition of E-line Media’s Gamestar Mechanic. It’s FREE, so get started now!

Keep Kids Learning

All Summer Long with WSIU Did you know that children can lose up to two months of essential math and reading skills during the summer? (Cooper et al, 1996) Or that for every one line of print read by low-income children, middle-income children read three? (Celano and Neuman, 2008) All kids need to keep learning over the summer, which is why WSIU is partnering with the National Summer Learning Association to #KeepKidsLearning, especially youth whose families are unable to afford summer enrichment programs. Join us at regional library events and area Farmer’s Markets throughout the summer (look for our WSIU Literacy Van), and enjoy PBS KIDS games and mobile apps; math, reading, and healthy living activities; free books and prizes; and much more. JOIN US! Eldorado Public Library | Sat, Aug 1, 10am. For details, contact Beth Spezia at (618) 453-5595 or beth.spezia@wsiu.org.
