Gresham High School is a comprehensive high school with a century long tradition of excellence. We offer a wide range of academic offerings including International Baccalaureate and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) coupled with strong athletic and activities programs that offer positive opportunities for students to achieve personal and academic success. Our community and staff are proud of our history of excellence and work very hard to continue this habit. Our daily operation in school and around the community is founded on REAL: Respect, Excellence, Accountability and Leadership — a concept developed cooperatively by teachers, students and parents. REAL provides the foundation for how we do business. Simply stated, GHS views itself as an institution on a perpetual path to success and REAL provides the map needed to navigate this path. Over the past decade Gresham High School’s choir program has produced many state winners at the OSAA State Vocal Solo Championships and many of our students go on to major in music and perform in prestigious university choir programs throughout the United States. Our program is directed by Janine Kirstein and consists of Encore Choir, Gresham Men’s Choir, Treble Choir, Concert Choir, and Overtones. The Concert Choir and Overtones have traveled to Canada, Hawaii, Texas, California, and New York winning competitions each year in their choral performance category. They have performed at the OMEA All State Convention and held the honor of Mt. Hood League Champions for seven out of the past eight years. The Gresham High School Concert Choir has placed in the top five at the OSAA State Choir Championships five out of the past seven years. With the continued support of the Gresham High School Spirit Club and the broader Gresham community our choral program will continue achieving such great results. I sincerely hope that you enjoy the performance our students give. They are a wonderful group of young people who have dedicated a great deal of time and effort to their craft. Janine Kirstein Choral Director Gresham High School
Janine Kirstein is in her ninth year as director of the Gresham High School choir program. Her prior teaching experience includes Sam Barlow High School, Portland State University, Centennial Middle School and Lynch View Elementary. She has maintained a private vocal studio for 25 years which has produced many State Champions. Janine holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from Portland State University. Under her direction, the Gresham High School Concert Choir has consistently led the Mt. Hood Conference and placed in the top five at the OSAA State Choir Championships five times since 2004. In 2005, after the GHS Choir placed second at the OSAA State Choir Championships, Janine was chosen by Portland Monthly Magazine as one of 10 Superstar Teachers from the Portland area. During her time as a vocal instructor at Portland State University, she also sang with Choral Cross Ties under the direction of Dr. Bruce Browne. Janine is a member of MENC, OMEA and ACDA.
