WORTHY PEOPLE

W

e really wanted to celebrate women with this issue. It was very important to me to showcase women who walk to the beat of their own drum and work as their own boss. We are in a time where it is no longer acceptable to confine a person’s potential to one simple group whether it is gender, religion or race. It is for that reason that I might even argue that this issue is more of a celebration of worthy people than it is about just one group. But more than anything this issue is about celebrating women and nurturing our readers. In this issue you will read up on how to strengthen your mind and your body. You will see inspiring features on women who certainly inspire us, and you will get to enjoy a shopping guide that any woman would love. As it is with every issue, it is our goal to inspire and uplift you. Don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams, and never be reluctant to believe that you are worthy.

Much Love,

RED STEAKHOUSE

RED STEAKHOUSE IN MIAMI IS KNOWN FOR ITS SIGNATURE COCKTAILS AND DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS CUISINE

A transformative immersion of savory cuisine. By Ju’lia Samuels

Chef Executive, Peter Vauthy

One might argue that it would be over the top to describe Red the Steakhouse as an oasis for the senses. However, any other phrase fails to aptly describe the immediate feast that commences upon entering the steakhouse, which manages to converge the chic and sultry aesthetic that belongs to South Florida alone. Warm and surprisingly vibrant red walls are accented by an all black bar table and a wall

Signature appetizers and cocktails were just enough to tease the appetite. Brad’s Stuffed Hot Peppers, which were filled with house made italian sausage and tomato sauce immediately evoked memories of home but with an upper class flair. If that wasn’t enough, Executive

Chef Peter Vauthy brought out another appetizer to accompany the savory and spicy stuffed peppers. Lemon garlic shrimp, comprised of white gulf shrimp, crushed garlic, sliced lemon, white wine crostini and were wellseasoned and surprisingly filling to the appetite. Seven years later and $5 million richer, courtesy of Kickstarter, we are finally getting to see what happened to Veronica after high school. We also have to add how happy we were to see that Percy Daggs III who plays Wallace is right by her side along with all of the original characters from the show that we learned to love. The story kicks up when Veronica is brought back to her hometown to help her old flame Logan Echolls, who has been accused of murder. We are so excited.

BETH SOBOL

Undisputedly a woman to admire, Beth Sobol has built a legacy in the fashion community that is unparalleled to many. Discovered at 19 and swept of Paris only to go on and travel the world, normally sounds like the makings of the perfect fantasy. However, for Beth it was merely the beginning of a long-standing career. For 20 years Sobol was an international model and worked for some of the world’s top fashion houses in the US, South America and Europe. The talented visionary lends her experience and expertise to one of South Florida’s largest fashion weeks, Miami International Fashion Week. Miami Fashion Week was created to offer international exposure to Latin American and Caribbean designers. Currently going into its 15th year and presently ranked at number five on the world fashion calendar, the week is recognized as the largest and most prestigious international fashion events in the United States. As avid frequents of the week, we can personally attest to the week’s tendency to be bigger and better every year. Named as one of Florida's Top 100 Power Players by Florida International Magazine, one of the 50 Most Powerful People in Miami by Reel Life Magazine, one of the Top 25 Influencers in Florida by General Motors Corporation, and presented with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Sobol is a woman who commands a great amount of influence and respect. She was a recipient of the International Women's Day Award from the World Trade Center Miami, the Gold Medal Award from Miami Today, Business Journal and has an award named after her ("Beth Sobol International Fashion Award") which is presented to a top designer in Ecuador each year in honor of the countless emerging fashion designers Sobol has assisted. Beth recently discussed the keys to success and offered words of advice to those pursuing their dreams.

WORTHY WOMAN

Advice to other women with professional ambitions “My advice to women entering the professional world, changing careers or whatever the case may be that you find yourself going to work is to do exactly what I suggested above and “stay focused.” Don’t try to be everything to everyone. So concentrate on what you do best in whatever career that may be, and just work toward the goal of being the best at it. Whatever you are doing, identify the holes and find a way to fix the holes. Think of the next best thing to take what you are doing to the next level. I am my own worst critic! No one can beat me up like I can beat myself up so “I” am the one who is always looking at how I can make my event better.” On her future “My professional goals for the future are now changing as I have joined forces with 3 new partners to help grow Miami Fashion Week to an even bigger and better event than I was able to do by myself over the years. With the help of Aaron Perry and NatCom Marketing from Miami and TOAC Events from Spain, MFW will become an even bigger and more exciting the creation and launch of Miami world class event than ever before. The Oklahoma National Association of Black Journalists recognized Constance for excellence in news and feature reporting. The Texas Associated Press has also honored her for news reporting. The proud member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority discussed how the best is yet to come despite the recognition and her entrepreneurial achievements with her successful crocheting business. “I would say that I am still looking for my greatest professional achievement. At 31 years old, I haven’t reached my pinnacle. There is always room for achievements.”

There is more to Constance Jones than what instantly greets the eye every morning on Channel 10. Beyond the vibrant sense of style and flawless smile is a woman who also possesses all the traits crucial to surviving in the ever-changing world of journalism. There is a presence of confidence and assertiveness necessary for Constance to set herself apart from other journalists, male and female. “You have to be relentless,” Constance said in an authoritative tone. “I have to aggressively go after my goals.”

The graduate of Dan Rather School of Communications at Sam Houston State University has perfected the art of working hard and looking great at the same time. “The best career advice I was given was, fake it until you make it. Always make sure you look the part. When I was in school, I had two different jobs and I bought my suits from Goodwill. I had to make sure that I looked the part in addition to knowing my craft. People only know what you show them. You have to show them that you are the right person for the job.”

ALESSANDRA GOLD WITH

KRUZIN

FASHION AUTHORITY, SHOE DESIGNER AND CONCEPT STORE OWNER TALKS SUCCESS AND AMBITION AND OFFERS WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO FELLOW DREAMERS

ALESSANDRA GOLD

FASHION INSIDER, DESIGNER, STYLIST, PUBLIC RELATIONS MENTOR AND OWNER OF ALESSANDRA GOLD CONCEPT STORE DISCUSSES HER CAREER AND GENDER

In a prime location in Midtown Miami, rests a stylish gem, Alessandra Gold Concept Store. The spacious location houses an editorial studio and one-of-a kind pieces from bold and daring designers from all over the globe. However, there is a reassuring presence of Miami designers. To describe the place in simplistic terms, this is the place where the cool kids hang out. On the second floor of the store is Alessandra Gold nestled away in her office and creative studio. Spread out across her desk is a series of designs that she has been working for the branding of a new client. An equally stylish intern greets me as I walk in and she quickly disappears upstairs to inform Alessandra that her next appointment has arrived. Within moments, I am greeted by the soft spoken and stylishly poetic Alessandra. Her super long bone-straight hair, which has become wonderfully signature to me, hangs around her waist and she is decked out in a comfortable yet chic and flowy black and white top and form fitting black pants accented by her insanely stylish black strappy peep-toe high heels. “These are a new design of mine,” Alessandra volunteers after noticing how I couldn’t take my eyes off the shoe. “We have been busy all day and I have another meeting after this interview,” Alessandra says after a warm hug. “So you are making it upstairs. It means that you are very special,” she reveals. Alluding to the fact that she is very selective about who she allows into her work space. It’s easy to notice her swift ability to alternate between warm and inviting and strictly business. It’s a rare quality most women are afraid to master. I quickly make a note of it, packing it into my growing to-do list of being an effective businesswoman.

SNEAKERHEAD

IN A MALE DOMINATED PROFESSION ALESSANDRA STANDS OUT

“I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I WON’T GIVE UP” WE TOUCHED ON YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, COULD YOU GO A LITTLE DEEPER? HOW DO YOU THINK IT ALL PREPARED YOU TO BE WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? “I went from Industrial Design to Fine Arts to Apparel at FIT in NY. It was a great base. But finding mentors, working super hard, and learning from experience (good and bad) are the best ways to prepare to hit the ground running in this business. Until that breakthrough happens, you just need to persevere.” WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? “In my travels through Brazil, the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe and Asia, I’ve always observed people in

the streets to see how sneakers are constantly evolving as an art form, and somehow always find a way to the forefront of fashion. The vibe on the streets directly influences what styles are hot, how trends are changing, and how people are wearing their kicks. For this season, I was especially inspired by my recent travels to Asia, where fast and exciting new technologies coexist with ancient traditions — the Limited Edition sneaker for the “Year of the Horse” hits stores in the USA end of February 2014.” WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS HELPED MAKE YOU SO SUCCESSFUL? “Perseverance, sacrifice and hard work. Lots and lots of it. You cannot make your dreams come true while still sleeping.”

“KruZin will be one of the first global sneaker brands with a girl boss. Let’s face it, the sneaker world has traditionally been a fraternity. I’m not playing the gender card, but it feels good to be one of the women who is making a significant contribution to the sneakers of our time. That’s a milestone.”

WHO INSPIRES YOU? “Everyone out there trying to do what I am trying to do, the ones who are already there and the ones who have made history before us. When I feel very tired and the finish line seems so far away, I watch bios of people I admire, buy books and talk to good old friends to get me back in focus-mode.” WE LOVE YOUR KRUZIN COLLECTION. COULD YOU DISCUSS WHY YOU FEEL THEY ARE SO UNIQUE? “It took me about 4 years to develop the KruZin brand the way I had envisioned it as Creative Director. My intention was never to push another athletic brand into the market, but to use that cutting edge comfort technology and the superlightweight materials as differentiators in a fashion shoe. By bringing my apparel skills to the table, I was able to layer on forms, concepts and details you wouldn’t see on athletic sneakers. It’s the perfect shoe-sneaker! These are standout designs. KruZin fans have come to expect the unexpected with out-of-context materials like pony hair, acid denims, prints, 90's neons, lace, chrome liquid metals, arrays of combined materials, 3M reflective and our signature rubber spikes.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO WANT TO HAVE SUCCESSFUL CAREERS? “Think like a guy, but always act like a lady.”

KRUZIN KruZin has been featured in countless publications and is becoming a nationally recognizable brand. Alessandra became the creative director in 2011

MEN AND WOMEN One of our favorite things about the store and the shoe line Alessandra is the creative director, for has to be that it is for men and women. KruZin is also carried in Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale at The Archives. Check out Kruzinglobal.com to see more of Alessandra’s innovative designs if you are not in the Miami Area.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR BRAND IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? “Iconic, established, inspirational.” WHAT DO YOU THINK HAS HELPED MAKE YOU SO SUCCESSFUL? “Perseverance, sacrifice and hard work. Lots and lots of it. You cannot make your dreams come true while still sleeping. “

“Think like a guy, but always act like a lady.”

What You Should Know About

Angela Simmons

In a decade of reality shows and social media galore, it is a solemn and precious occurrence to be able to witness someone emerge from the experience seemingly unharmed. When the world was welcomed into the Simmons’ home in 2005 (Run’s House), no one really knew what to expect. Would we love the show or would we hate it? Would we become bored eventually or what? We got our answer in the first episode, which focused on Angela’s graduating from school as a straight- A student and Rev Run wanting to celebrate her achievements with a party. The show despite being sans salacious drama, drunken nights and guy troubles managed to be a big hit and offered a promising glimpse of the budding business woman Angela Simmons would soon become. We watched as Angela built a brand (Pastry shoes) with sister Vanessa and came into her own style. The duo went on to be apart of a very select few of MTV reality starlets who maintained a positive image and built a successful brand all at once. (We are of course speaking of Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.) The positive image also resulted in a spin-off show called Daddy’s Girls , which chronicled Angela and Vanessa’s business endeavors. After the last episode of Run’s House aired in July 2009, followed by Daddy’s Girls ending in September, Angela’s fans were still left wanting more. Two New York Fashion Week shows, a successful hair

product line and an increasingly popular Web site that features updates on Angela and her clothing line as well as features up and coming designers later, and Angela’s fans still can’t get enough of her. Whether they are watching her on Instagram, Twitter or 106th and Park, her loyal supporters seem to show support at every turn. On Co-hosting 106th and Park “It really taught me how to let go of being so perfect. I’m a perfectionist and I had to learn to just go with the flow and enjoy it,” Angela said. When thinking about the future, Angela has her mind on one thing, progression. “I would love to continue growing and going in the direction I am. I just would like to really see my fashion line come to life.,” She also hopes to experience love in her future. “And of course married,” she added when discussing what she would like to see happen in the next five years. According to Angela, her family is her source of motivation. “My family has been a true inspiration to me. My father, uncle and even my mother have inspired me. My mother has been such a driving force ( Valerie Vaughan), who has really driven me to be as strong as I am today.”

ndre Soriano has successfully made a name for himself as a designer. Initially catching our eyes on the hit Bravo series, Styled to Rock, the lively and insanely talented designer is not letting his mass appeal and momentum slow down. Soriano was one of the noted stand-out designers at LA Fashion Week last year. Fashion authorities and critics alike love the designer’s unique aesthetic and we can’t get enough of it.

On Styled to Rock “It was so amazing,” Soriano said. “I was standing in the same room as Rihanna. I got to meet Miley Cyrus, Pharell and so many amazing people. Like of course there was 4 a.m. production but it was amazing.” Signature Aesthetic Classic, edgy, timeless and elegant are a few of the words that Soriano uses to describe his signature aesthetic. However, he admits that his designs, much like the world of fashion, are always evolving. “It always depends on the client,” Soriano said. The Future When discussing his future goals, the designer has as much enthusiasm as he does

when talking about his larger-than-life designs. “Anything is possible.” Soriano is currently preparing for another show, which he promises will be just as grand as his show last year at LA Fashion Week, as well as a large charity event this month in February. “It’s really important to me to give back,” the designer said. Soriano manages to use his gift to give back. He leant his talent to a runway show that donated their proceeds to the victims of the devastating typhoon in the Philippines in 2013.

Ana Aravena Ortuño

A CLOSER LOOK

We love Ana’s effortlessly chic aesthetic and how her style easily conveys who she is and what she is interested in.

THE WOMAN BEHIND OUR FAVORITE BLOG, CHIC STREETS AND EATS

Her blog Chic Streets and Eats chronicles her fashion excursions and stylish restaurants. It’s the perfect marriage of style and cuisine.

WORTHY

My style can be described as modern and edgy. I love structural pieces that have that modern cut but can last the test of time. I also seek clothing that can have multiple purposes, for example, I love pajama-style pants because you can dress them down or dress them up, or boyfriend jeans that can be worn with heels or sneakers. Why Blogging Two years ago, I was in a rut. I had just graduated from college and the recession had taken a toll on the job market. I was having such a difficult time finding a job that I felt lost. One day I was browsing through a home decor blog and I happen

to come across one post that featured a lifestyle blogger and her home. I clicked on the link to her blog and instantly fell in love with her concept and style. So I religiously went to her blog every morning as I got ready to go to work. You can say I had a light-bulb moment where I realized that I could do something like this, and the rest was history. Ever since I started my blog I have felt such happiness, because I found a way to express my creative side, which had been hidden away for years while I was in college. My dream had always been to be a clothing designer, but lack of time and money did not allow me to go to

fashion school, so the blog was an outlet for me to express my love for fashion and style and everything else I love. I never realized how many people I would meet and how many opportunities would come from it. I am grateful for each of them and I hope that it only gets better.

Ana’s blog will take you from Miami to Germany and everywhere else in between. To read more about Ana’s adventures, make sure you check out her blog, Chic Streets and Eats. http://www.chicstreetsandeats.com/

Kavita Mainkar is the perfect combination of brains, beauty and super chic style. The electrical engineer shares her style chronicles on her blog, Fashion Diaries by K. This season I have opted for bold colors, adding a pop of color to well-defined cuts. These are a few of my favorite cuts and styles, from one shoulder to puffed sleeves to strapless options. These wardrobe pieces can be dressed up by adding a little shimmer with your jewelry to jazz up your look; I have showcased some jewelry pieces that I am in love with this season from BCBGMaxazaria. Light embroidered jackets can turn a party outfit into a more formal look, as shown in the yellow Naven dress, with a BB Dakota jacket.

Naven is a newer brand, established by twin sisters in 2008, the brand is all about bold color and bold cuts, making it a very modern and chic brand. “I am worthy because I have years of training experience as an athlete. So none of my clients, whether athletic or sedentary, can feel like I can’t understand what they are going through.” ----Nicholas Davenport

When you arrive at the Mental Muscle gym you are instantly greeted by pulsating music. The rhythmic beats bounce off the wall making you wonder if you have stumbled upon an underground party or a gym. A quick glance at the small dry erase board reminds you that you are here to work. The routines that are carefully outlined on the dry erase board instantly bring me back to my failed track high school days. Nicholas Davenport stands in the center of the warehouse watching all of his clients, encouraging them. One minute of mountain climbing followed by another minute of cardio strikes fear in my heart. When I look at Nicholas and my old high school colleague turned wrestler, Kervins Bien- Aime, they smile and say in unison “‘Can’t’ is a bad word at Mental Muscle Fitness.” Just as a I shake my head in disagreement, a young woman who frequents the gym smiles at me and says, “I hated it at first but it’s worth it. You can do it. No worries.” Through my feeble efforts, I watch as she moves gracefully through each circuit outlined on the board. “My favorite saying is; ‘The body can only do what the mind tells it to do,’ Davenport shared with the magazine. The formula for success is simple to Davenport. It all starts with the mind. “Whether it’s working out or driving a car, your mind is what starts the initial process. With that being said if you want to lose weight or become a pro athlete, neither can be accomplished without the focus and motivation from within. A lot of my philosophies and methods come straight out of psychology theories and concepts as well as exercise science; there is a thin line between the two.”

Who is Mental Muscle Fitness? “ Mental Muscle Fitness is a training program geared towards athletes and non-athletes alike. We pride ourselves on providing the best workouts to cater to the needs whether it be lower your 40-yarddash time, increasing your bench press, losing some weight or just living an overall healthy life.” What is Mental Muscle? “Mental Muscle is how the body and mind correlate in relevance to exercise and health. A persons capability of becoming healthy and fit comes down to the elements of mind and body and if their mind can push them to overcome any mental and physical obstacles. Remember you body can only do what the mind tells it to do.” What is our TLAA Philosophy?

“TLAA stands for train like an athlete. This philosophy is plain and simple, all of your favorite athletes regardless of sport have several things in common, amazing health, athleticism and bodies! You cannot go wrong with this mentality, that is why we promote all of out clients to train like an athlete to get these kind of results.”

top quality trainer and can best service my clients because their well being is my number one concern.” Goals “My short-term hopes are to start getting into more media specific activities such as having a training web show. I am also working on my first book entitled, “The Can’t Get Right Get Right Plan for Fitness”. So my future goals are not to back away from training but to expand it in other means so I can get my services to the world. My long-term hopes would to be to open up multiple facilities and start servicing more pro athletes and celebrities so I look forward to make these dreams come true. The most popular way to find me is on Instagram @mrmentalmuscle then Facebook: Mental Muscle fitness and my Twitter is the same as my Instagram. We also have a site www.mentalmusclefitness.com so we are all over the net so find us.”

I have competed at the highest level of amateur sports as well as get myself into tiptop shape for my own health. I believe I have a level of empathy to almost anyone of my client’s struggles or goals. This extra quality along with years of direct experience in the training and fitness industry makes me a

Dear Dreamer, When did we become such dreamers? The proverbial question that comes to mind from time to time. I think we have always been dreamers. We were always thinking of the impossible, but then life hit us. Life hit us smack dab in the face and we forgot about all that we once dreamed about. We forgot how to be daring, and we forgot how to be courageous. Do you remember yourself as a child? You were fearless. You did things that you look back on and say I could

never do that today. You would climb up on top of things. You would jump off of the bed not knowing where you were going to land. You didn’t care about the consequences of your actions you just did it because it was on your heart.

You Should Know ROSETTA MARRET Faith Marrett believes in her designs. We had the opportunity to ask the designer a few questions and to make sure that we also got a few words of encouragement for our “I readers. How long have you been designing? “I have been designing as long as I can remember, but I have been professionally designing since 2008 when I graduated from college and started ROSETTA MARRETT which consists of: Haute' Couture, Millinery Accessories, and Fashion jewelry.” What was the first thing you ever designed? “The Garment I have designed and made was a crepeback satin asymmetrical one shoulder cocktail dress in Garnet red.” How would you describe your aesthetic? “My vision for the ROSETTA MARRETT woman is a chic, confident, polished woman who loves modern luxurious pieces to live her life in. For ROSETTA MARRETT, I have adapted the motto “Everyday Luxury.” I love sculpture and jewelry so I bring that into all the garments I design.” Greatest obstacle you have had to overcome and how did you do it? “I don’t know if I’ve had the greatest obstacle yet. There have been many obstacles on my path. I had to have a risky spinal surgery and go through months of rehab to relearn how to walk, but I had to do it so I just did it. I go by my personal mantra, I was named Faith for a reason and so I have Faith in myself.” What advice would you give to anyone pursuing their dreams? “Be bold, go after it, and don’t be afraid to ask anyone anything.”

Hitstreak on ShowMobile

Grammy nominated producer, Eric Foster White has created a new app to engage musical audiences around the world. His multi-channel app brings storytelling and fresh talent directly to music lovers and allows viewers to interact directly with the cast members and fellow viewers. ShowMobile brings video, text messaging and social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) content from the show’s cast members into a single intuitive interface, transforming it all into a story. HitStreak is a scripted series starring four multi-talented young singers who are poised for greatness. Noah (16), Crystal (15), Brian (13), and Mariangeli (10) were handselected to star in the series through a rigorous auditioning process. Foster shared what stood out the most with each singer when auditioning the kids for the show. Crystal was an unexpected surprise with a lot of promise, according to Foster. “Crystal sung ‘Momma knows best,’ accapella in her first audition,” Foster shared. “When you meet her, you see this bubbly personality and 6 Worthy-magazine.com

when she sings there is so much authority. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that energy.” Noah stands out effortlessly, according to Foster. The 6’3 teenager writes his own songs and seems to handle pressure with maturity and ease, Foster shared. Mariangeli is described as the phenomenally talented singer and charismatic scene stealer and Brian is the phenomenal singer and computer programmer who is also the application’s ring leader. Foster views the show as a success because of it’s ability to receive instantaneous feedback and because the group’s effortless chemistry. “You can’t manufacture chemistry like this,” Foster said.

In the midst of the chaos and beauty that is Art Basel, the entire city of Miami is converted into a flawless canvas. The allure to celebrate the art deco history that is synonymous with the Miami lifestyle is undeniable. The Ritz Carlton located in South Beach was probably one of the best locations to cultivate such creativeness. Appealing to the likes of Lea Black. The wife, mother, activist and business woman wowed the patrons of Art Basel and Miami with her one-of-a-kind after five crystal handbags worthy of being called art. Guests cheered to her success with Zyr Vodka “Lea-tinis” and couture

cookies, handcrafted to resemble Lea’s purses. Describing her purses “I would describe them as timeless bags that never go out of style and are also affordable,” Lea said. Guests were afforded the rare opportunity to mingle with the socialite. Being persistent about uplifting our readers we took the opportunity to ask the businesswoman for words of advice to the dreamers of the world. “Don’t give up no matter how many times you hear no.
