AN INTRODUCTION TO FTA / COMPANY OVERVIEW

Flight Training Adelaide (FTA) is a residential college located at Parafield Airport, South Australia. FTA provides professional airline pilot training for many of the world’s leading airlines. Present and past customers include Air China, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Airlines, Dragonair, Emirates, JAL Express, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, South African Airways and many more.

Highly trained and committed staff ensure the environment and content of the training courses exceed the expectations of our customer airlines and candidates. Graduates of FTA typically progress smoothly to command demonstrating core skills and a knowledge base reflective of the solid foundation of aviation training provided at Parafield.

A full range of services are available at FTA including selection, English language training, airborne flight grading, ab initio training to CPL, multi-engine CIR, frozen ATPL, multi crew procedures, jet transition, flying instructor training and helicopter pilot training.

FTA provides partner airlines with graduate pilots who best reflect the values required to be excellent transport aircraft captains and airline managers.

AN INTRODUCTION TO FTA / MISSION STATEMENT

The College offers a positive learning environment, derived from continuous review of process and regulation, innovation, the appropriate use of technology and dedicated pastoral care.

Training is provided by well selected, highly professional and motivated staff. FTA staff are committed to establishing and continually reinforcing an appropriate aviation culture focused on safety, Threat and Error Management, the principles of Crew Resource Management and the highest possible operational standards.

At FTA disciplined behaviour, technical skill and a comprehensive knowledge base are fundamental elements of the solid foundation provided to cadet pilots in our training programs. TRAINING ENVIRONMENT IN FTA / CITY OF ADELAIDE

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is a modern and innovative city with a population of around 1.2 million people. With a Mediterranean climate, South Australia is home to some of the worlds leading wine growing areas, many of these within a one hour drive of the city. A vast expanse of Australia’s central and outback regions are located to the north and west of Adelaide, however the city boasts many beautiful beaches and offers a wide variety of water sports. Almost all other sporting activities are also catered for in Adelaide.

Adelaide is a truly multicultural city. This diversity is reflected in the large number of carnivals and art festivals that are a feature of the Adelaide community, and the many fine restaurants, theatres and art galleries in the city.

Ready access to unlimited uncontrolled airspace or immediate access to a radar controlled primary control zone combine to give FTA a significant training advantage. General flying training areas are readily available and a multitude of regional airfields with a variety of navigation aids are regularly utilised.

Weather A variety of moderate weather conditions, usually accompanied by excellent visibility, provide a unique natural advantage for South Australia as a flying training environment. Summer is usually dry and hot with average daily temperature around 30째 C while in winter the temperature averages around 15째 C during the day with the coldest morning still above freezing.

Served by two sets of parallel runways, Parafield Airport has a substantial capacity for all circuit training. FTA is the dominant user on Parafield and enjoys strong support from airport management. Parafield Airport is located only 10 nautical miles from Adelaide International Airport, allowing students ready access to IFR operations in an international terminal area environment with only moderate traffic density.

The Austrian-built Diamond DA42 “Twin Star” is a twin-engined, ultra-light & high strength composite constructed, retractable undercarriage, 4 seater aircraft powered by two 1.7L Thielert Centurion turbo-diesel engines. The “Twin Star” represents the next generation of twin trainer and is fitted with the Garmin G1000 avionics suite making them an ideal platform for advanced navigation and instrument training for airline-bound pilot trainees.

The American BE76 is powered by two 180 hp engines, has four seats and is of metal construction. This aircraft features counter rotating, normally aspirated engines and is ideal for asymmetric training. Students also gain their initial twin rating and Command Instrument Rating on this aircraft.

The German built Grob is a 115 hp, two seat, fibreglass trainer with outstanding training characteristics, particularly for landing. The method of construction has resulted in an extremely strong, safe airframe for basic training.

The French TB10 is a 180 hp, four seat, all metal light aircraft. The TB10 is an ideal platform for the introduction of intermediate handling skills, navigation and basic instrument flying skills.

The French CAP10B is a 180 hp, two seat aerobatic training aircraft constructed primarily of wood and fabric. Arguably the best aerobatic training aircraft in the world, its role at the College is to provide extreme unusual attitude recovery training.

The American 300CBi provides commericial training operators with the lowest life cycle cost of any current production helicopter. The 300CBi has a proven record of success and multi-mission capablility, rugged dependability, inherent value and unmatched safety and crashworthiness.

Flight Operations Room Featuring innovative in-house developed software, the core of the operations room are the comprehensive Resource and Fatigue Management Systems that assist both staff and students in recording and managing all aspects of the daily flying and maintenance activity at the College.

Consisting of nine air-conditioned, well equipped classrooms and manned by a highly talented and keenly motivated core of subject matter experts, FTA’s Ground School consistently achieves exceptionally high first time pass rates. The traditional “Chalk and Talk” method of instruction produces these excellent results for FTA but is supported by instructor-led Computer Based Training (CBT).

Maintenance FTA’s approved maintenance organisation carries out the majority of maintenance tasks required. The condition of the aircraft, the dispatch reliability and the safety record of the College are testament to the professionalism and quality of the engineering section of the College.

Flight Training FTA’s investment in the selection and development of flying instructors is significantly higher than industry standards. Cultural differences training and teaching to students with English as a second language are key elements in staff training. Instructors are mentored through a formal development program that ensures timely acquisition of the various qualifications, ratings and endorsements required to teach at all levels.

OPERATIONS AT FTA / RESIDENTIAL & RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

Dining With a long history of catering for different nationalities, our chefs are expert at preparing meals for differing cultural needs. The friendly atmosphere generated by catering staff regularly attracts favourable comment in exit surveys conducted by the College. Student input to menu development is encouraged and often forthcoming through the monthly Campus Committee meetings or the Student Welfare Manager.

Accommodation Students are accommodated in modern, air-conditioned houses where each student has an individual bedroom/study and shares a lounge and bathroom with three other students – offering the ideal combination of individual privacy and mutual support. Special arrangements are available for female students.

Recreational Facilities A swimming pool, multi-purpose courts, golf putting green and driving nets, soccer pitch and gymnasium are all available within the residential complex. Additionally the Learning Resource Centre provides internet access, the hire of video and digital cameras, a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books, popular CDs and more.
