Three Royal Air Force BAe-125s from 32 Squadron, also known as the Royal Squadron, have been acquired from an MOD tender by the special projects division of West Sussex aerospace engineering firm Hayward & Green Aviation Ltd.

Plans for the aircraft have yet to be finalised but Green has confirmed that at least one will be maintained as fully operational. The others may be used as sources of spare parts for continuing operations. Green believes the cosmeticallypreserved airframes themselves would make an eye-catching and historic gate guardian. “These aircraft have served Queen and country incredibly well, and have a unique place in Britain’s recent aviation heritage” he concludes.

Screamin' Sasquatch stunt pilot Jeff Boerboon.

Acrobatics pilot Jeff Boerboon is gracefully pivoting in front of me as he raises his hands over his head. Then he arches his body sideways and turns both hands, palms out to the left, like Superman executing an in-air maneuver. Boerboon is, in fact, performing an intricate dance, one that could be replicated hundreds of feet in the air as he pilots the one-of-a-kind Screamin’ Sasquatch Waco biplane, a classic–looking airplane with the unique distinction of having a Learjet engine strapped to its belly.

They imagine where the audience line will be and then walk and dance through the various moves, taking note of their proximity to each other and figuring out exactly how and when they’ll perform certain rolls and spins, especially when they’re breaking in and out of formation. Boerboon’s plane, by the way, is well-equipped for stunts and keeping up with the seemingly more powerful and modern planes it flies alongside. A replica of a 1929 Taperwing biplane, the Jack Link’s Screamin’ Sasquatch was built from the ground up by pilot and mechanic Dell Coller for stunt flying. Coller told me that the project started 20 years ago, but it wasn’t really finished until recently when Coller, 33, joined and started leading the project. Coller is often called the “mastermind of the plane,� and he knows the Screamin’ Sasquatch inside and out. It’s built of metal, wood and fabric like traditional biplanes, but is larger and with an unusual blend of early and late-20th century technology. There are separate throttles for the two engines, but one digital readout in the rather cramped cockpit that keeps track of both the prop and the jet. Coller is able to download all the data after every flight to analyze the biplane’s performance.

Jeff and the Jack Link's flying team (yes, that Jack Link's of the always ready-to-eat beef jerky) performed at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, New York, USA on May 23 and 24. Dozens of airplanes performed death-defying stunts before around 400,000 spectators. RESTORATION

The intention is that all work will be completed by the 75th Anniversary of the prototype’s first flight on 25 November of this year. The aircraft has been re-painted in the dark earth/green upper surfaces and yellow lower fuselage/undersurface scheme applied originally in February 1941 and retained for the rest of the aircraft’s career.

The original machine was delivered to the US Army Air Force in March 1944. In June 2010, operating as a floatplane in Canada, it was damaged during a hard water landing and went into storage. The aircraft is currently being restored to airworthy condition by Vliegtuig Compagnie at Zandam, north-west of Amsterdam.

The propeller offers lighter weight and a performance enhancement of as much as 5 KTAS in the Acclaim. It is available plain or with TKS ice protection. An anti-ice slinger kit can also be included for conversion from the two-blade propeller. Kit prices run from $12,700 to $15,300. Structural Composite Upgrades STC SA02482CH allows the installation of Hartzell’s N7605C-2 Advanced Structural Composite ASCII three-blade propeller, which has become a common sight at airports due to heavy usage on Cirrus SR22T, Piper Mirage and Matrix, Diamond DA40XLT and other top-of-theline models. In addition to better performance than many of the earlier models, the lighter 64 lb. weight is a plus along with increased durability and repairability of the carbon fiber blades with impact resistant nickel-cobalt leading edges. It is available plain or with TKS ice protection. An anti-ice slinger kit can also be included for conversion from the two-blade propeller. Pricing on the all carbon ASCII structural composite propellers for Mooney aircraft ranges from $22,900 to $25,000. Mooney Acclaim with three-blade blended airfoil prop manufactured by Hartzell Propeller.

Hartzell’s Top Prop programme has acquired two propeller Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) for late model Mooney aircraft, including the M20R Ovation, Ovation II, Ovation III, M20S Eagle, and M20TN Acclaim. Hartzell Propeller upgrade installation kits are available for all horsepower and horsepower upgrades, including 244 hp, 280 hp, and 310 hp. “Increased performance benefits available through Hartzell Propeller’s Mooney Top Prop program include reduced weight, shorter take-off distance, increased climb rate, increased cruise speed, and smoother operation,” said Hartzell Propeller President Joe Brown.

Mooney Lineage Once again, Hartzell Propeller is delivering of the company’s three-blade, blended airfoil, scimitar props to Mooney’s manufacturing operation in Kerrville, Tex., for factory installation on its new production Ovation and Acclaim Type S aircraft models. Through the years, about 10,000 Mooney airplanes have been equipped with Hartzell props. One of the launch platforms of the first Hartzell two-blade compact aluminum propellers in the early 1960s was the Mooney M20C. Through the decades, the M20 airframe was improved with the addition of metal wings, generations of avionics, fuselage stretches, increased gross weights and more horsepower.

Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and service supplier returned to the recent EBACE event, having bolstered its French network with the addition of a new location at Golfe de Saint-Tropez International Airport (LTT\LFTZ). With immediate effect, Air BP will be the sole fuel provider of Jet A-1 and Avgas at LTT\LFTZ serving its General Aviation customers in the region. The declining trend in 2015 has narrowed, but is still -2.7% year to date. France and Germany propped up the market, gaining up to 4%, notes WingX, however this was largely driven by Piston and Turboprop activity. Business jets flew 57% of all flights in Europe, with jet charters falling -3% YOY. The recent growth trend in the UK ended in April with a -1% slowdown. The renewed slowdown in activity is clearly not just related to the Eurozone periphery, however, as indicated by flight reductions in Italy, Spain, Switzerland and particularly Belgium. Mostly the drop came in AOC flights. There were still some growth regions, notably Turkey, Czech Republic and Austria, where Charter increased 8% YOY. Inbound flights from North America were up 6%; from North Africa up 14%; and from Asia-Pacific, up 18%. Unsurprisingly, the collapse in Business Aviation activity in Eastern Europe and Russia continues with flights inbound from the CIS down -26%. Just a few ticks before the midnight deadline to adjourn Monday, the Minnesota Legislature fulfilled Duluth's $4 million request for funding that could accommodate the expansion of Cirrus Aircraft and the creation of at least another 150 local jobs. Earlier, the House had moved to appropriate only half of the sum, with the Senate supporting the full request. In response, representatives of Cirrus and the city of Duluth ramped up their campaign to convince members of a conference committee to go with the larger number. That effort bore fruit in the waning moments of the legislative session, and if Gov. Mark Dayton signs off on the jobs bill, the funding could be released in July. "In the last 90 seconds of the session, I'll take it," said Bill King, Cirrus' vice president of business and administration, Monday afternoon. The city of Duluth seeks to construct a $10 million facility for Cirrus with the state funds plus another $6 million in tax-increment financing. The proposed site for the new 60,000-squarefoot building is on city-owned land located southeast of Cirrus' existing Duluth operations, which already employ about 600 people. That number should grow substantially if the Federal Aviation Administration certifies Cirrus' first personal jet, the Vision SF50, potentially opening the door for production to begin by year's end.

Daher announced May 17, the delivery of a new TBM 900 to a Madrid, Spain-based company for corporate transportation – marking the first Spanish customer to receive this latest version of the TBM very fast turboprop aircraft family. Bell 429 chosen to operate in extreme Siberian weather Bell have signed a purchase agreement for a Bell 429 at HeliRussia that will operate in extreme cold weather conditions in Siberia. “This is the first Bell 429 sold in Siberia,” said Patrick Moulay, vice president global sales, Bell Helicopter. “The Bell 429’s superior performance in extreme cold weather conditions was a key decision factor for our client,” said Alexander Evdokimov, general director, Jet Transfer. “This aircraft will provide our client with an extremely reliable, safe and comfortable aircraft that can cost-effectively operate in adverse climates.” With offices in Moscow, Jet Transfer is an independent sales representative of Bell Helicopter for Russia specializing in the management of charters and aircraft sales. The aircraft will be used for commercial use within the Siberian region.

Atlantic Airways (RC, Vágar) as opted to acquire two new AW139s from Italian manufacturer AgustaWestland (Milan Malpensa) to replace a pair of twenty year-old Bell Helicopter Textron 412s. The helicopters are used on scheduled services within the Faroe Islands and for emergency Search and Rescue (SAR) and MedEvac flights. “This is a significant improvement of our helicopter service as the old helicopters are downgraded as new and stricter regulations are introduced in the field,” Jørgen Holme, Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Airways, said. “With AW 139 helicopters we are acquiring a modern fleet ready for the future, and which meets all relevant standards.” The Faroese carrier has experience with the AW139s having leased them several times in the past to service oil industry contracts.

Abu Dhabi-based Falcon Aviation Services are about to receive the two AgustaWestland AW189s they have had on order since at least October 2014 when it was announced by the manufacturer. The pair of helicopters – registered A6-FHB and A6-FHC – are currently en route from the factory in Italy to their new base in the United Arab Emirates, a flight of four to five days which started on Friday 29th May. Both are in offshore configuration. The UAE operator has prevoiusly operated different AW109 variants and also has AW169 helicopters on order. I

Flight Safety Foundation Announces BARS for Offshore Helicopter Operations Standard The Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) announced today the expansion of its Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) suite of documents aimed at managing aviation risk for contracted aircraft operations. The Basic Aviation Risk Standard for Offshore Helicopter Operations (BARS OHO) continues the theme of presenting a standard in a risk-based format using applicable threats and controls.

The objective of this process is to measure the external aircraft noise levels in three flight conditions: take-off, approach and flyover. The noise measurement test programme starts with the identification of low acoustic profile test site and meeting the geometrical size of runway and cross runway distances. First contracts signed for new light Ansat Russian Helicopters has signed two contracts to supply the modernised light Ansat passenger helicopter manufactured by Kazan Helicopters. Under the agreements, signed at HeliRussia 2015, the first customers for five of the new aircraft will be Tatarstan-based Tulpar Helicopters and Vector Aviation Company. Tulpar Helicopters will receive three Ansats, with another two aircraft ordered by Vector Aviation Company. Both clients provide services including commercial helicopter and aeroplane flights, service and engineering support for aircraft, helicopter sales and leasing, operational support, design and production of VIP interiors and supplying aviation equipment.

The modernised Ansat is reliable and simple to operate, can operate in various climates and is suitable for outdoors storage. In December 2014 the Ansat with hydro mechanical controls received additional type certification from the Interstate Aviation Committee’s Aviation Register (IAC AR), allowing it to make commercial passenger flights. Xcel Energy inspects more than 320,000 miles of electricity and natural gas infrastructure to ensure the safety and reliability of its energy system. Now with approval of the Federal Aviation Administration, Xcel Energy will be able to more efficiently, effectively and safely monitor its systems using drone technology. The FAA on May 11 approved Xcel Energy’s request to operate small unmanned aircraft systems or drones commercially. Xcel Energy sought the approval so it can inspect its critical energy infrastructure. Xcel Energy will use drones to visually inspect electricity transmission and distribution lines, power plants, renewable energy facilities, substations and natural gas transmission and distribution pipelines. “We are pleased with the FAA decision as we study how this new technology can best be used to enhance employee and public safety at our operations,” said Kent Larson, Xcel Energy’s executive vice president and group president of operations. Sikorsky S-97 Raider flies for first time Sikorsky, today announced at the end of May, the successful first flight of the S-97 RAIDER™ helicopter, a rigid coaxial rotor prototype designed to demonstrate a game-changing combination of maneuverability, hover ability, range, speed, endurance and survivability. The first flight was conducted at Sikorsky’s Development Flight Center (DFC) where the two-prototype RAIDER™ helicopter test program is based. During the first test flight, which lasted approximately an hour, RAIDER Pilot Bill Fell and Co-Pilot Kevin Bredenbeck Sikorsky S-97 Raider. took the aircraft through a series of maneuvers designed to test the aircraft’s hover and low-speed capability. The RAIDER helicopter program is part of the portfolio of Sikorsky Innovations, the technology development organization within Sikorsky Aircraft’s Research & Engineering division. A traditional topping off ceremony took place on 19 May, to mark the ongoing construction of the new search and rescue (SAR) helicopter base at Newquay Cornwall Airport.

At the forefront of sustainability, the bases will include a raft of environmental technologies, including rainwater harvesting systems.

Amsterdam Hospital Helipad Permit Expired; Officials Forgot Renewal Air Ambulance landing at Amsterdam Hospital. The air ambulance in Amsterdam has been flying illegally since November last year. Officials forgot to renew the permit for the helipad on the roof of the VU Medical Center. “If something goes wrong now, the province will be in hot water”, State Member Marnix Bruggeman of the SP warns, according to Het Parool. He has sent written questions to the Provincial Executive on the issue. Bruggeman wants to know where the government’s more than 80 thousand annual grant intended for permits was actually spent. The trauma helicopter will keep flying while matters are being sorted out, Het Parool reports.
