- Strong showing of general aviation exhibitors at AERO in Friedrichshafen from April 18 to 21, 2012 – new exhibitor demo flight days – large number of reservations received With over 500 exhibitors expected to attend and an improved exhibition concept, AERO will continue to be the largest trade show for general aviation in Europe in 2012. Although the number of airplanes sold in general aviation during the past 12 months has decreased, the downward trend has slowed compared to last year, and numerous new models are sure to stimulate demand among customers. What’s more, in 2012 exhibitor demonstration flights featuring airplanes, helicopters and gyrocopters will be offered on three days of the exhibition. Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann and project manager Roland Bosch are happy to report that as of the end of November 2011, 60 percent of the exhibition space at AERO 2012 has already been booked. “We’re experiencing a particularly high level of demand,� says Roland Bosch. “However, the market recovery and upswing has been less pronounced in general aviation than in other industries. Nearly all of our exhibitors and contacts in the industry have expressed cautious confidence and optimism, barring any additional disruptions in the market.�

This makes it clear that in economically turbulent times, it’s all the more important for general aviation businesses to present themselves to potential customers at the exhibition in Friedrichshafen. “Everything that flies� will once again be the theme at AERO in 2012, which will include ultralights, single and multi-engine airplanes, helicopters, gyrocopters, turboprops and jets. The exhibition will also feature new engines and a wide range of aviation accessories. General aviation encompasses all of civil aviation, with the exception of scheduled and charter flights. According to the European Union, over 200,000 motorized aircraft, ultralights and gliders are registered in Europe alone. Airplanes, helicopters, aviation services and accessories generate sales of several billion euros each year in the European general aviation industry. In order to make AERO even more attractive in 2012, the organizers have decided to offer exhibitor demonstration flights on Wednesday through Friday, giving exhibitors the chance to show off their airplanes, helicopters and gyrocopters in flight. The hour-long demonstration flights will begin at 1:30 PM on each of the three days.

AERO 2012 will also feature the new Engine Avenue, a special area for modern aircraft engines from a variety of manufacturers, including electric, internal combustion and hybrid models. In light of the continued rise in aviation fuel prices, many new developments are expected to be shown. Furthermore, numerous informative lectures and symposia on current topics in aviation will once again be offered at the AERO Conferences in 2012.

Increase your Eye Protection in the Cockpit! . . . Why? The first question is how good are Pilot protected sunglasses behind the windshield compared with traditional sunglasses? According to researches we have made, we found out that only some aircraft are filtering the UVC, UVB and UVA up to 390nm but many do filtering only partially the UV up to 360nm which is not enough. No compromises are allowed as far as the eye protection is concerned, and the best is just good enough. The science is raising an alarm; our eyes get too much UV rays, blue light and infrared. Pilots are particularly endangered. Without going into details about the complexity of the climate change and the decomposition of the ozone layer in the stratosphere, it is a fact that the radiation intensity has increased over the past decades. It is therefore not astonishing that the World Health Organization WHO has published a worldwide radiation index which is updated on a daily basis. In our 47° latitudes and 8.5° longitude in the center of Europe (Zurich), we have a very high UV index of 8 at only 400m over the sea level. It is Important to know that all 300m or 984 feet the UV is increasing up to 4%. Therefore it is indispensable and particularly in the cockpit that pilots make sure that the major part of these rays do not reach the eyes at all. Medical doctors recommend to assure a sufficient eye protection even at a marginal light incidence – this means also at twilight.

CR128 UV has a wave length form 280nm up to 390nm and is mainly responsible for cataracts which is according to the WHO the first eye sickness, on second position we have Glaucoma (over pressure in the eyes) and on third position we have Age Related Macular Degeneration, which is known as ARMD. Unfortunately ARMD is very difficult to be treated and people can get blind. This ARMD sickness can start at the age of 55.

For ARMD there are many reasons which are responsible e.g. increased age, blue eyes, smoking, after cataract surgery, DNA, nutrition and blue light. The blue light is integrated in the visible spectrum which turns out as day light, transparent for us. If we pass the transparent light to a prism, than we have the seven colors as we experienced from the rainbow. With a spectrometer we can measure each color and it is not red or yellow which has most intensive energy. It is violet and blue which has 3 ½ times more energy than red. The blue is passing through the windshield, the cornea, the lens and the energy is landing on the macular and retina. These blue rays are like a drop of water which is falling every day on the floor and can destroy with time the Macula and cause ARMD. Pilots have 365 days blue sky even if it is cloudy or rainy after passing over the clouds the sun is shining and the clouds are reflecting the rays 70% to 80% back to the sky into the cockpit. This means pilots have not only an increase in altitude but as well an increase of the reflection which eyes have to absorb. What can you do against it? Prevention is the right thing. It is important that you following the guidelines of the WHO in regards of the UV rays and learn how to use the UV-Index and respect your time limits according to your skin type. AmbiRad provided a new LPG gas fired radiant tube system that included 12 units from the Vision series. The VS40LH features advanced burner technology where combustion occurs entirely with the firing tube making it smaller and quieter than conventional radiant systems. The slim line burner improves temperature distribution so that heat is delivered more evenly.

To heat a cavernous airport hangar used for training pilots and housing helicopters, Newquay Cornwall Airport was looking for a heating system that not only provided warmth but also flexibility and superb efficiency. The solution was found in leading European supplier of heating systems AmbiRad’s vision series, a radiant heating system which is ideal for a massive hangar where frequent opening of the hangar doors causes a high number of air changes and heat loss. As part of the airport’s transition from military to civilian ownership in December 2008, the site no longer had available the steam system previously supplied from a hot water panel on the air base. Contractor County Heating Maintenance worked with AmbiRad in designing a replacement heating system which took into consideration both heat loss and the need for

ACF-50 has been selected by Surrey’s famous Brooklands Museum as corrosion prevention treatment for their Concorde and VC10 airframes. “The preservation team at the Brooklands Museum have been using ACF-50 for some time now, especially on their Viscount” says Dave Heppell of ACF-50.CO.UK, “and they are now rolling treatment out to Concorde and the museum’s VC10.” Both airframes have suffered from an appreciable amount of corrosion; Concorde, on account of having been dismantled to get it on to the site and the VC10, particularly because of dissimilar metals used for fastenings.

AW609 “Tilt Rotor” – 70 orders from 40 companies have been placed for this civil version

AgustaWestland and Bell Helicopter have formally completed the process that will see the former take full control of the AW609 civil tiltrotor programme. In a statement on 29 November, AgustaWestland said all ‘legal and regulatory approvals’ had now been given and it was moving towards civil certification of the AW609 in late 2015 or early 2016. The first deliveries of the aircraft would follow shortly afterwards. AgustaWestland’s move to take full control of the 609 project was first revealed during Heli-Expo in March, with the acquisition officially announced in June. The negotiations between the two companies are understood to have centred on the status of the intellectual property rights to the tiltrotor technology, which is also used on the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey. The Bell/Agusta Aerospace Company will now be wholly owned by AgustaWestland and renamed, although it will remain a US company as the type certificate applicant to the FAA. AgustaWestland said the AW609 programme will be managed by a single integrated development team, based in Cascina Costa, Italy, and a new operational base will be opened in Arlington, Texas, to manage US-based tiltrotor operations. The company also revealed that ‘preliminary orders’ for some 70 AW609s have already been placed by around 40 customers around the world for a range of commercial and government roles. It has plans to develop a new satellite-based navigation system and mission avionics for the AW609, as well as a ‘state-of-the-art’ avionics architecture. In terms of the test programme, the first two prototypes have completed more than 600 flight hours, including at altitudes of up to 25,000ft and cruise speeds of up to 275kts at the aircraft’s maximum weight. The third prototype, now being assembled in Italy, will be devoted to icing certification testing, while the fourth will be used for the development and integration of the new avionics.

Two more AW139s for JSC Euro-Asia Air AgustaWestland has announced that JSC Euro-Asia Air of Kazakhstan has ordered two additional AW139 medium twin helicopters in offshore configuration for transport operations in Kazakhstan's section of the Caspian Sea. The order marks further expansion of the AW139 fleet in Kazakhstan’s commercial helicopter market. AgustaWestland made the announcement on 16 November in a company press release. According to AgustaWestland one of the two aircraft will be provided with the Full Ice Protection System (FIPS) allowing flights into known icing conditions. JSC Euro-Asia Air already operates four AW139s. A total of five AW139s are currently in service in Kazakhstan.

The AW139 can be easily and quickly converted to and from various configurations. According to AgustaWestland, the AW139 has the best performance in its weight class in all operating conditions and with its power reserve delivers Category A (Class 1) superior performance from a helipad (elevated or at ground level) at maximum take-off weight. New ‘avionics philosophy’ to the test

Eurocopter has announced that they have delivered the first of six EC145s to Kazakhstan. According to the company a total of 45 of the helicopters are to be purchased, and will be assembled by the new joint venture Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering, in which Eurocopter and Kazakhstan Engineering have a 50/50 share. According to a company statement, the new joint venture will be assembling and customizing EC145s at its facilities near the Astana International Airport in Kazakhstan. The company will also enable Eurocopter to provide its customers in Kazakhstan and Central Asia with better local services for helicopter maintenance as well as training for pilots and technicians. In addition, Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering will be pursuing sales activities throughout the region. The EC145 is a true standout in the twin-engine, medium-lift class. It offers multi-mission capabilities and is equipped with the latest innovations developed by Eurocopter in cockpit design, avionics and rotor systems. It is certified for flight at temperatures as low as -45°C, making it particularly well suited for the harsh weather conditions and frigid temperatures often encountered in Kazakhstan. According to Eurocopter the remaining helicopters are to be delivered by the end of 2016.

Eurocopter’s EC145 testing the avionics suite of the EC145T2

Eurocopter has begun to validate the new avionics suite of the EC145T2, with the first prototype to incorporate the company’s new design philosophy taking to the air for the first time on 28 October. While the first prototype of the new variant flew for the first time in June of 2010, this aircraft is effectively a hybrid as it features the legacy avionics suite of the EC145 and is largely being dedicated to air vehicle and flight behaviour testing. Some 250 hours of flights tests have now been logged, including a series of hot and high tests in the US. Bernd Osswald, EC145 products and services programme manager, said the second prototype featured the new Helionix avionics suite and would be dedicated to validating the system as the company moved towards FAA and EASA certification of the EC145T2 in 2013.

Eurocopter plans to ramp up the production of key aircraft types, reflecting the company’s confidence in the recovery of the civil helicopter market. At Eurocopter’s Marignane facility, steady sales of the latest version of the Super Puma, the EC225/725, have seen production steadily increased since 2009 and the goal is for 50 aircraft to be produced annually from the end of 2012, company officials said. Eurocopter EC225 and Super Puma sales and support contract manager Alexandra Cros said the company had received around 200 orders in the last five years for the EC225 and EC725. ‘Around 100 of them have been delivered so we still have 100 in our order book. If we look at the future, we still believe we have strong prospects with the 225 and the 725, especially with the continuous improvement programme,’ Cros said. Under the plans being published, SAR operations at RAF Boulmer would end in 2015 and at Portland when the MCA contract expires during 2017. The winning bidder will be then be expected to operate from ten locations around the UK, but provide at least the same level of service as at present. The new arrangements will see the end of military involvement in dedicated helicopter SAR, allowing the RAF and Royal Navy to focus their activity on front-line operations and enabling the Ministry of Defence to meet its previously-announced intention to retire its fleet of Sea Kings by March 2016.
