About the Authors

A graduate of Seikei University in Japan, Ms. Kobayashi was featured in the October 2005 edition of the Wall Street Journal’s “50 Women to Watch,” and in 2004 she received the following award from Veuve Clicquot, “The Business Woman of the Year.” She is active in promoting opportunities for women and young professionals in the workplace and is a board member of Keizai Doyukai, the Japanese association of corporate executives.

Sabine Konrad Dr. Sabine Konrad is a German Rechtsanwältin. Her principal area of practice is international dispute resolution, in particular international arbitration and public international law. She regularly advises investors and governments in matters of investment protection. Dr. Konrad also sits as arbitrator. In 2007, Dr. Konrad was designated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Panel of Arbitrators of the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). In 2005, she was closely involved in setting up the Frankfurt International Arbitration Center, which serves as a cooperation facility of ICSID for investment treaty arbitrations in Germany. Dr. Konrad is the founder of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot. Dr. Konrad earned a diploma from the University of London, and an LL.M. Eur. from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. She received a J.D. from the University of Passau, Germany.

Julie Martin Julie Martin, a Senior Vice President in the Political Risk Practice of Marsh USA, is based in Washington, DC. She is responsible for development and management of the political risk business in the Mid-Atlantic and South regions. Ms. Martin’s work in political risk includes program structure, exposure analysis, insurance placement, and claims advisory for a variety of industries. These included large complex mining and infrastructure transactions, ­multicountry placements, supplier credit and bank financing arrangements, and capital market securitizations. Ms. Martin has worked extensively with both public and private political risk underwriters in manuscripting policy wording to address complex risks and exposures. Ms. Martin joined Marsh in 2001 after 20 years of experience in the political risk business at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the U.S. government agency charged with promoting U.S. investment in emerging ­markets. At OPIC, Ms. Martin served in a variety of positions, including chief underwriter and head of the political risk insurance department. She was responsible for many of the initiatives by OPIC in the political risk area
