Carbon footprints are good indicators of the amount of greenhouse gases emi ed during the production of a product. They are not good indicators of overall sustainable development. A more rounded picture of development could be obtained by using carbon footprints as just one of a number of indicators of wider sustainable development—for example, carbon emi ed per person employed in the production phase, carbon emi ed per dollar generated in households with incomes less than $50 p.a., and so forth.

Note 1 Greenhouse gas emissions from transport are expressed as kg CO2e/ton km. This is the total amount of greenhouse gases emi ed when 1 ton of goods is transported 1 kilometer. All greenhouse gases are expressed as CO2 equivalents, or CO2e.
