Welcome to the 23rd season of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, also known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony. Tonight, we are ringing in the holidays with Holly Jolly Symphony Spectacular. For only the second time in 23 seasons, The Pavilion showcases this musical holiday merriment featuring the Houston Symphony.

As our season winds down, we look back on some of the exceptional performing arts events of 2012. Highlights include the Houston Symphony’s Music of Queen: A Rock Symphony, The Art of Baseball, Star-Spangled Salute, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony and Hocus Pocus Pops as well as Houston Ballet’s Giselle and Texas Music Festival’s German Masters. Conductor Biography

Special Guests Biography INERTIA Dance Company, under the direction of choreographer Sharon Roberts, blends ballet and hip-hop dance together in unique and exciting ways. This elite performing ensemble represents the Westside High School Dance Program of Houston ISD. The group is nationally recognized with more than 30 national titles from competition performances in New York, Chicago, New Orleans and Miami. They have been featured in “People,” “Dance Teacher” and “Southern Living,” as well as appearances on “CBS Early Show,” “The Tony Danza Show” and all local affiliates.

When not in Houston, he also is the Music Director of the Boise Philharmonic, and in 2012, Franz began his tenure as Music Director of the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Opera and Orchestra. Recent and upcoming guest conducting highlights include his debut with the Baltimore Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and his Canadian debut with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

INERTIA has been featured as guest artists at the Houston Symphony Lunada Concerts at Miller Outdoor Theatre and pops and family concerts at Jones Hall. Tonight’s performances mark their 12th production with the Houston Symphony. They also have been half-time performers for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

Robert Franz

In his sixth season as Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony, Robert Franz leads the Symphony in a broad range of creative educational and family concerts. His concerts have reached more than 72,000 audience members of all ages as he travels to various venues throughout the state of Texas. Photo by Jeff Fitlow

Under his direction, both the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (2008) and the Louisville Orchestra (2001) were awarded ASCAP’s Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming. The Louisville Orchestra’s award led to the creation of an education program for Kentucky Educational Television titled Creating Music and Stories. Winner of the 2008 BPO/ECMEA Music Educators Award for Excellence, Franz has created arts education programs for the Carolina Chamber Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Louisville Orchestra, West End Chamber Ensemble and the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony, including that organization’s innovative Bolton Research Project. While at the Louisville Orchestra, he revitalized an ASCAP award-winning new music concert series, and served as co-host of In a Different Key, a weekly contemporary classical music radio program on WUOL.

Most recently Inertia traveled to Suzhou, China and Beijing, as representatives of the United States at the 8th China International Folk Art Festival.

A recognized leader in the arts, the Idaho Education Committee invited him to address the Idaho Legislature on the importance of music in education. Franz also has authored his first children’s book with a CD titled Stella’s Magical Musical Tour of America. It introduces children to classical music by incorporating various musical excerpts intertwined throughout the story of a girl’s journey in a hot air balloon. In addition to his current posts, Franz served as the Music Director of the Mansfield Symphony in Ohio (2003-10), Resident Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic (2005-09) and Associate Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra (1997-06). He also led the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony, the Louisville Youth Orchestra and the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony. He continues to serve as Music Director Emeritus of the Carolina Chamber Symphony, an orchestra he founded, and provides educational programming workshops at the National Repertory Orchestra during the summer. Franz received his Master of Music degree in conducting from the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1992 and his Bachelor of Music degree in Oboe Performance in 1990 from that same institution. He has participated in conducting workshops in the Czech Republic, St. Petersburg (Russia), Nashville, the Festival at Sandpoint, and was a participant in the 1997 National Conductor Preview. Volunteer Spotlight A resident of The Woodlands for 21 years, Letitia “Letty” Kelly’s involvement with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion goes back two decades. Her passion for volunteering at The Pavilion stems from her interest in music. After her daughter joined her high school orchestra club, Kelly worked with the club when the school wanted to end the orchestra program. Her daughter now plays for the Madison Symphony in Wisconsin. Kelly was a volunteer with The Woodlands Living Arts Council, an organization that supplied volunteers to The Pavilion. The Living Arts Council became what is now known as The Pavilion Partners. “Our children think it’s so neat that we volunteer in our community, especially at a place that involves music,” said Kelly. Kelly loves working any Pavilion event where she interacts with children, especially Children’s Festival and Musical Scores. “Working with kids at risk is such a reward. At one of The Pavilion’s education events, I had a group of kids ask me if the lawn was made of real grass,” said Kelly. “They had never seen such a large lawn of grass before. They were amazed!” In addition to volunteering at The Pavilion, Kelly enjoys attending the concerts. She loves the Houston Symphony performances and many of the contemporary concerts as well. She also enjoys reading and gardening. She has been married for 48 years to her husband, Tom. They have three grown daughters, four grandchildren and two cats. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Launches App The Apple App Store has more than 500,000 apps for work, play and everything in between. And now it includes The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s app. The Pavilion’s app is now available to download for free in the Apple App Store. The Pavilion app is compatible with iOS devices including iPhone, iPad and iPod. Guests can get detailed event information, buy tickets to events, add specific events to a Favorites list, scroll over the interactive map to see where the concessions or restrooms are located, sign up for Pavilion newsletters, find out about guest information and more. “We are excited to launch our app and cannot wait for our fans to start using it,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “We hope concertgoers use the application as a tool to find information about The Pavilion quickly and easily.” Currently, The Pavilion only offers an Apple app for iOS devices, but plans for the app to be available for Android phones in 2013. Look for updates to the iPhone app beginning in 2013. To find the app, simply visit the App Store and search for Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and download to your phone. The Pavilion Partners Contribute to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Though Company Matching Programs The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, has gone the extra mile by giving back to The Pavilion through their employers’ volunteer involvement and matching grant programs. This year, several Partners have raised more than $7,000 for The Pavilion by leveraging their companies’ matching programs through a donation and/or matching their volunteer hours. “One reason that we chose to volunteer through Partners, and direct our grants there, is the fact that Partners gives back to the community in forms of scholarships, educational outreach programs, performing arts and more,” said, Angela Gott, Partners member and Insperity Employee. Insperity and Exxon Mobile Foundation actively encourage employee volunteerism to charitable organizations in the community by offering 7 • www.woodlandscenter.org

volunteer involvement and matching grant programs. Both Insperity and Exxon Mobile Foundation will match employee’s direct donations, as well as offer charitable grants to those organizations in which their employees actively volunteer. Exxon Mobile Foundation’s Volunteer Involvement Program includes retirees as well as active employees. Be sure and check with your human resources department to see if your company has a volunteer involvement program or matching grant. It’s a great way for companies to recognize those who give so generously of their time, and to provide an additional opportunity for organizations to earn funding in a very meaningful way. Mark your calendar for March 24, 2013, and get ready to be wined and dined at the 15th Annual Wine Dinner & Auction.

The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, host this annual event benefiting The Pavilion’s educational programming and the Partners Scholarship Fund. A wine and hors d’oeuvres reception begins at 5 p.m. followed by a seated dinner by Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at 6:30 p.m. The cost to attend the event is $200 per person. In addition to fine food and a variety of wines, the evening includes a live auction, bid board auction and silent auction featuring a selection of wine-related items, leisure packages, private dinners and tastings and more. Net proceeds from the live auction benefit the Partners Scholarship Fund. The remaining net proceeds from the event benefit The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs including Children’s Festival and Musical Scores. The 15 Annual Wine Dinner & Auction Committee is excited to announce that this year’s event will honor Arlene and Sol Sachs for their generous support of the arts, The Pavilion and the entire community. Sol has participated on the Wine Dinner committee for more than 11 th

years. He co-chaired the committee from 2003-11 with Randy Lowry. Arlene has volunteered at the Wine Dinner for several years as well. There are several underwriting opportunities available for the Wine Dinner including $5,000 for decorations and $1,500 for Charm Your Glass. Additionally, guests can donate $1,000 for a fine arts scholarship. Fine Arts Scholarships Available Through The Pavilion Partners Every year, The Pavilion Partners offers fine arts scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to major in the arts, as well as renewal scholarships to past recipients currently studying the arts in college. Based on talent and academic performance, fine arts scholarships are awarded to students in the categories of vocal and instrumental music, theatre arts, dance and visual arts. Starting in November, information about The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program will be distributed at schools in eight eligible districts including Conroe ISD, Spring ISD, Klein ISD, Magnolia ISD, Montgomery ISD, Tomball ISD, Willis ISD, MacArthur and Carver High Schools in Aldine ISD and private schools within each district’s boundaries. Information about the scholarship program, including application deadlines and auditions, also is available at www.wooodlandscenter.org/scholarships. December 2012 • 8

Concert Etiquette The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion offers concertgoers live performing arts events in a picturesque setting featuring such world-renowned organizations as the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest. Children The Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orchestra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible. Electronic Devices Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists. Late Seating Fashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

During the Performance Guest should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a performance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assistance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience. Applause Not sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience. After the Concert Bravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and the leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. To Picnic, or Not to Picnic? Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fill at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.

Guest Information Tickets

Children

Tickets are available at The Pavilion Box Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the day of performances through intermission. American Express, MasterCard, VISA and Discover are accepted at The Pavilion Box Office.

For most contemporary events, children 5 and under are admitted free to the lawn without a ticket. At most performing arts events, children are admitted free with their parents to the mezzanine and lawn areas. All children must have a ticket to sit in orchestra-level seating.

Tickets also are available at all outlets, including Fiesta, select H-E-B and Walmart locations and Media Magic, or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. For guests with hearing impairments, Ticketmaster’s TDD number is 800-755-6244. Groups of 20 or more are eligible for discounts for performing arts and selected contemporary events. Guests may park free of charge in lighted and patrolled lots convenient to The Pavilion. Preferred parking is available for all events in the on-site Town Center Garage. For most events, lots open 90 minutes prior to the performance.

To ensure the enjoyment and safety of all our guests, the following items may not be brought into The Pavilion: Animals, aerosol cans, audio and video equipment, cameras, food, beverages, non-plastic bottles or bottles with lids, fireworks, laptops, laser pointers, lawn chairs, portable televisions, radios, strollers, tablets (such as iPads and Kindles) and weapons.

Food and beverage items are available from The Pavilion concession areas in the North, South and Lawn plazas. Concessions are operated by ARAMARK Sports & Entertainment. Food can be brought in during all performing arts events; however, beverages are not allowed into the venue.

Cameras that are small, non professional are usually allowed at most contemporary concerts. No professional, detachable lens cameras are permitted into the venue. No audio or video is permitted at any event at The Pavilion. Camera policies are dictated by the artist and are subject to change. Photography and video, including with cellphones, are NOT allowed at Houston Symphony concerts or Houston Ballet events at their request.

Restrooms Permanent Restrooms are located in all three plazas. Lawn Chairs For comfortable hillside seating, guests may bring blankets or use The Pavilion’s specially designed lawn chairs free of charge for all performing arts events.

Information Booths Information booths are located at the gated entrances in the North, South and Lawn plazas. If guests have questions or concerns, they are encouraged to visit Pavilion volunteers who staff the information booths throughout the events.

The 1,600-square-foot Woodforest Bank Club, located just off The Pavilion’s North Plaza, is available for lease year-round. Outfitted with large video screens, multimedia equipment with surround sound, a copier, fax and dedicated telephone and modem lines, the Club is designed for business meetings and special, private events. For rental information, call 281-363-0900. The House of Blues Hospitality Tent provides a tented outdoor setting for pre- or postconcert gatherings at most contemporary concerts. Inclement Weather All events at The Pavilion are rain or shine. Pavilion events are not canceled due to rain. If it rains on the day of the event, guests are encouraged to wear rain apparel.
