Welcome New Pavilion Employees

George P. Mitchell, founder of The Woodlands, along with his wife Cynthia Woods Mitchell, for whom The Pavilion is named, dreamed of creating a first-class performing arts facility for The Woodlands since the community’s inception in 1974. They envisioned the facility as a venue for classical performances and educational events, as well as popular music. The Pavilion opened April 27, 1990, with the Houston Symphony. Other performers in the inaugural season included Frank Sinatra, Alabama, Garth Brooks, James Taylor, Heart, Jimmy Buffett, Santana, Depeche Mode and more.

a new industry-leading pixel pitch for this size of application. With a brightness measurement of 5,000 nits, the screens are bright and viewable even in direct sunlight. The new screens have a slightly new position with a 20 degree angle added to allow for improved view-ability from the seating area. Besides the two new screens in the seating area, an LED screen also is located in the North Plaza.

This year marks The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s 25th Season of presenting exceptional performing arts events, educational outreach programs and live music.

James Taylor, Spryo Gyra, Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Chicago, Steve Miller Band, Jimmy Buffett and Lee Ritenour are just some of the 10 artists that played in 1990 and are returning this year. Besides those great performers, The Pavilion is the lucky Texas venue to get Bruce Springsteen which is the first time he will perform at the venue. “We decided to be aggressive early on,” MacDonald said. “This will be our busiest April and May ever, with Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Spyro Gyra, Casting Crowns, Il Divo, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews Band, Styx, Journey and Jimmy Buffett all performing before Memorial Day.” Just in time for the new season, The Pavilion is going to have two state-ofthe-art LED video screens. The $2 million project has a 7.8 mm LED which is

Texas Children’s Hospital Teams Up with The Pavilion for 25th Season The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is proud to welcome Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands as a presenting sponsor of the 2014 Performing Arts Season. As a $60,000 season underwriter, Texas Children’s will have a presence at all performing arts events this season. Guests can stop by the Texas Children’s Hospital booth in the plaza to find out about the progress of their new construction as well as fun crafts for the kids. Texas Children’s Hospital is a not-for-profit health care organization committed to creating a healthier future for children and women throughout the global community by leading in patient care, education and research. Consistently ranked as the best children’s hospital in Texas, and among the top in the nation, Texas Children’s has garnered widespread recognition for its expertise and breakthroughs in pediatric and women’s health. The largest free-standing children’s hospital in the U.S., Texas Children’s had more than 3.2 million patient encounters in the 2013 fiscal year. “The enrichment provided by The Pavilion’s programs to the community and families in The Woodlands is extremely valuable,” said Lisa Yelenick, director of marketing and public relations for Texas Children’s Hospital. “Part of Texas Children’s mission is to play an integral role and be a committed member of the communities we serve where we provide health care services. One way we would like to accomplish this is by bringing our two organizations together to educate families.” “We’re most looking forward to growing the relationship between Texas Children’s and The Woodlands and becoming a great

member of the community by meeting the families and learning more from organizations like The Pavilion that serve the community,” Yelenick said. Christine Scully, director of development for The Pavilion, shares Yelenick’s sentiment. “We’re honored that The Pavilion is the first organization in The Woodlands that Texas Children’s Hospital is exclusively sponsoring,” Scully said. “A strong partnership with a like-minded organization with the same values of educating the community is invaluable to us.” Slated to open in 2017, Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands is the second community hospital for Texas Children’s Hospital. The 548,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, designed especially to serve children and families, will offer specialty pediatric care in areas that include cancer, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, diabetes and endocrinology, urology, sports medicine, gastroenterology and nutrition, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, allergy and immunology, dermatology, adolescent medicine and physical rehabilitation. Hospital facilities will include 24 emergency center rooms, 74 outpatient rooms, five radiology rooms, four operating rooms and 30 acute care beds at opening with plans of up to 200 beds. Along with serving families throughout The Woodlands area, Texas Children’s anticipates serving families throughout Greater North Houston include Montgomery, Walker, Grimes, Liberty, Harris, Polk, San Jacinto and Hardin counties.

Education is The Pavilion’s Mission! Even after 25 seasons, most people still do not know that part of The Pavilion’s mission is to provide educational outreach programs about the performing arts to students in the greater Houston area. Every year, The Pavilion touches the lives of approximately 40,000 students and their families through a variety of educational outreach programs. One of the newest education programs is Chamberfest, a week-long chamber music camp. The event was started by a Pavilion Partner Fine Arts Scholarship recipient, Marie Daniels last year and is now part of The Pavilion’s educational programs. Daniels is currently pursuing a Master of Music at The Julliard School. Chamberfest is open to students in grades 7th to 12th and for violin, viola, cello and bass. It entails four days of rehearsals and coaching and one 45-minute individual lesson for each student. At the weeks’ end there is a Festival Finale on The Pavilion’s main stage. Students also have daily workshops on topics such as public speaking, improvisation, music history and communication through music. Students interested in participating must fill out an application

by March 25 by visiting www.thewoodlandchamberfest.com. There is a $220 tuition fee. Auditions take place April 4 and 5 at The Pavilion. One of the other great educational program is the annual Hats Off to Reading Celebration. The event takes place May 1 in conjunction with Celebration of Stanton Welch with Houston Ballet at The Pavilion. The event is held in The Pavilion’s House of Blues Hospitality Tent starting at 6 p.m. Hats Off to Reading is a free event sponsored by the Reading Odyssey Committee, a community coalition that encourages students to develop a lifelong love of reading. Children can take home a free book and participate in literacybased activities such as a book walk, hat-making and face painting. Reading Odyssey is a partnership between Montgomery County Memorial Library System, Conroe ISD librarians, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School Library, Chick-fil-A, Scholastic Books and The Pavilion. For more information on The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs, visit www.woodlandscenter.org.

Guests Created New Memories at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Prom Night “Feels Like the First Time” Gala Guests had the chance to relive or redo their prom at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Prom Night “Feels Like the First Time” gala held Feb. 8, 2014, at Competitive Edge Sports. The event raised more than $425,000 making this the most successful gala ever. These funds benefit The Pavilion’s performing arts events, educational outreach programs and for the first time ever The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Fund. Guests were encouraged to dress from their favorite prom era or wear their dream prom attire. The Pavilion honored, George and Dianne Lindahl III, at the gala as the “King and Queen” of the prom. George is a former board member having served on the board for six years and has given to The Pavilion in numerous ways. He was the first to purchase a $100,000 “Juke Box Hero” table. “Prom Night was one of the best events we have ever had and one of the most successful galas raising money for our arts and education events as well as our fine arts scholarships,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “This event solidifies the longevity of our fine arts and scholarship funding for many years into the future. This success makes a strong statement about the support the arts have in our community.”

Pictured with the couple is Jeff Shipley, Pavilion board of director’s president and John Robichau, Pavilion Partners board of director’s president.

The gala also featured many extraordinary live auction items. More than $208,000 was raised from the auction that included a concert backstage experience, autographed guitars, a one-of-a-kind dinner and wine package, exclusive sports package, meet & greet with Foreigner and more. One of the highlights of the evening was a drawing to determine the winner of a 1.5 carat diamond and custom design, Foreigner autographed guitar and Meet & Greet and L’Auberge Casino Resort packages. Steve Nance, Pavilion board member won the diamond and Patricia Brown with Woodforest National Bank won the Foreigner Meet & Greet. Prom Night gala featured the legendary British-American rock band Foreigner. With ten multi-platinum albums and 16 Top 30 hits, Foreigner is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales. Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems including “Juke Box Hero,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” and the worldwide No. 1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” Foreigner continues to rock the charts more than 30 years into the game.

Give Your Heart to the Arts as a Pavilion Partner Volunteer by Leslie Williams

The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, is looking for volunteers with a passion for the arts. The 2014 season kicks off in April with the 16th Annual Wine Dinner & Auction fundraiser then moves right into concert mode with Spyro Gyra & Lee Ritenour April 12 and The Waterway Art Festival happening simultaneously. We have lots of volunteer opportunities for Pavilion Partners!

We start the season off with a few contemporary concerts including Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon and Il Divo. Then we have an exciting jazz concert Sypro Gyra & Lee Ritenour, Houston Ballet’s Celebration of Stanton Welch, the Houston Symphony’s Best Of Beethoven and Houston Grand Opera’s concert performance of “Carmen.” We have some artists returning this season who have played here several times including Jimmy Buffet, Journey and Linkin Park, as well as some artists who are playing here for the first time like Bruce Springsteen. This is going to be a fantastic season and I hope you are as excited as I am. See you out there!

A mini-tour of The Pavilion is included. “This meeting is a great way to find out more about our volunteer program and how you can be involved in the events at The Pavilion,” said Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator for The Pavilion. “Of course there are a variety of other ways you can volunteer with Partners including fundraising, scholarships, membership and more.”

PAVILION

New Faces at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion

Since The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s inception, ticketing has evolved from using paper tickets to electronic ways of entering the venue. Ticket buyers are most familiar with Will Call, print-at-home tickets and receiving paper tickets by mail. Paperless entry/credit card entry is a new delivery method many tours choose for certain tickets within the venue. With this delivery method, no paper ticket is received in advance, so there’s no need to go to the Box Office before the show. However, your group must enter the gate all together. Once at the gate, a seat locator is printed for your convenience. There is no delivery fee associated with this type of ticket. Make sure to bring the card that you used to purchase the ticket to the concert. If for some reason you are unable to bring the card with you, contact Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000. Check The Pavilion’s website and social media pages for special ticket deals like lawn 4-packs or early bird special ticket offers. If purchasing lawn tickets, ticket buyers should find out if 4-packs are available. The Pavilion usually promotes these offers on the website, but you can always call our main number at 281-364-3011. Keep in mind that lawn 4-packs are not offered during presale offers. Don’t forget about deals on tickets through sites like Groupon. These are both reputable sites that are not selling tickets secondhand, but have made a deal with Live Nation for discounted tickets, so they are safe.
