Week 2013 Love Your Body Week took off with a bang on October 14th and ran all week. Some of the activities we had included having Bodywhy’s on campus. Bodywhy’s are The Eating Association of Ireland. Fiona from Bodywhy’s did three hours on both Cork Road Campus and College Street Campus giving out information on eating disorders and advice and help to any student who wanted it. Running alongside our Bodywhy’s stands we had Myth Boards with Body Myths on them and clarifying that they were only myths and not facts. Much of the week was spent trying to spread some love on campus and empower people to love their bodies. We had complement stickers where student’s wrote something nice about someone and then stuck the sticker too them. We also did ‘What is Beauty’ where we encouraged people to write up what they thought beauty is and the answers were just beautiful :). Of course we couldn’t think of a better way of spreading the love on campus than of course to have our favourite characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse and their helpers giving out free hugs every day. Mulligans Pharmacy came on campus on Tuesday where all day they tested student’s blood pressure and cholesterol and gave out information and advice on how to stop smoking. We also had a Please Talk Stand where we tried to spread Please Talk’s message that talking is a sign of strength and not weakness. We also sold Life’s Little Emergency Kits and raised money for Suicide or Survive. Movember was high on priority all week with November so close and all week we told people about Movember and how they could sign up to it and raise some much needed cash for cancer. To promote the healthy lifestyle that we all want to achieve, we had free fruit and water on campus all week, we also gave out free smoothies on Cork Road Campus, which were kindly sponsored to us by Campus Services. There was a free Bootcamp in the Sports Hall during the week and a low cost Boxercise Class. We launched our first Healthy Eating Competition of the year this week. All you had to do was email us your favouite student meal, with step by step instructions, pictures to prove you made it and a price list of how much it costs to make. Entries had to be, creative, low cost, not too time consuming and reasonably healthy. Congratulations to Mary Mc Glinchey who’s pizza won her a weeks shopping and to all our runners up’s who won themselves two months gym membership. Every day of Love Your Body Week we also published a student friendly recipie on our facebook (there still there if your looking for ideas of what to cook). Towards the end of the week we tried to rewind and relax a little so we had some chill out music by Johnny in College Street Canteen and a ‘How I Met Your Mother Marathon’ in The Rec Room in College Street. Unfortunately due to weather conditions the Bubble Soccer and inflatable sports had to be canceled but we are working on a date to get them back. These are just some of the activities that took place during Love Your Body, if you missed any make sure and don’t miss them the next time. WIT Students’ Union Facebook Page will keep you up to date on whats going on Welfare Campaigns so keep an eye out. Big shout out to The Welfare Crew who were the backbone of this campaign and put in so many hours into making it a success. We hope you enjoyed it just as much as we did. Christina

The week of the 18th of November saw WITSU’s first Equality Week in many years. Jam packed with activities and events aimed at promoting the wide range of diversity we have on campus and highlighting the areas of inequalities many of are students are still facing today. Equality week is being kick started with a debate on same sex marriage and the launch of “Yes Equals Sex, Anything else is Rape” campaign. Other events that took place during the week include voter registration drives, transgender rights petition, a balloon release and blind sandwich making. Without a doubt the highlight of this week will be wheelchair basketball in the sports hall. The campaign came to a close on Thursday the 21st with a Rainbow Party and DVD evening hosted by WIT LGBT society. Being the first Equality week in so long I would love to as always hear your feedback so if you liked or disliked anything on this week make sure and let me know. A massive thank you also to our debaters, Micheal Deedy, George Karr, Paul O Dwyer, Laura Harmon, Colm Brady and Mark Fennessy.

WITSU Freshers Week 2013

Freshers Week what a great success it was overall. Each day as you can remember, “at least I hope you all do”, there was various events been put on over the campuses. Monday been the ‘Fresher’s Ball’ with Keywest with a sell out crowd and a beach party team. This was the first of many successful nights throughout the week. Tuesday saw the most beautiful Irish fashion blogger Susan Jackson (SOSUEME) give a talk to students of WIT on fashion. She is a very successful blogger as her webpage as over a million views. There was a great turn out for this and many students enjoyed this, as it was something a bit different then we ever had before. The main event of the Tuesday was ‘Tinchy Stryder’ playing the Foundry Waterford. This was a big act for us to have as he has had many #1 hits in the charts. It was another sell out crowd and there was great atmosphere on the night. That brings us onto Wednesday, where we had Walking On Cars play the dome during the day. This was to be one of the highlights of Fresher’s Week this year. A massive crowd gathered in the dome for this one and what a gig it was. The feedback we got back from students was nothing but positive and it was great to hear it, as we were happy that you all enjoyed it. Let’s hope there are many more day events to come like this one. ‘Sam and The Womp ‘played crystal that night with a back to school theme party and this was another excellent night. The last day of Fresher’s Week landed on Arthur’s Day. This is always a big day in the Dome Bar. We saw our own college band play ‘On The Run’ who always gets the crowd going and put on a show for us. They were followed up by the three top DJ’s in Waterford who each have residencies in the 3 nightclubs in Waterford city. They were assisted with the bands drummer to add more thrilling moments to the day with spine tingling build-ups and drops. The throw of the dice for the week was at Masons with the Full Moon Party with DJ Rob Spencer. This turned out to be a carnival night as such with fire breathers and snakes and LED man walking around on the night. The atmosphere was electric. This was a fantastic end to an entertaining week. Thanks to all the companies who came on campus during the week and also to all those bands and DJ’s that played throughout the week for us. A special mention goes out to all those who helped out during the week for to. Until next time, hope you all enjoyed your Fresher’s Week 2013! Our Next big week is RAG week and planning for this is well underway just to have you know!

Welcome International Students! On behalf of WIT Students’ Union and The International Office of WIT, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our incoming Erasmus and International students and I hope your time with us will be full of memories. I hope you have made friends with the local students - try not limit yourself to just being friends with other international students so you experience the Irish culture fully. I hope you are attending classes and have found a balance between studying and partying. I hope you are using your weekends to discover Waterford and other parts of Ireland. As always please continue to contact the Students’ Union with any question you may have throughout the year and for printing and binding services. We are here to help! Take part and attend as many student events as you can. LIKE the WIT Students’ Union Facebook page to keep up to date on events - www.facebook.com/witsu You should also join the Waterford ERASMUS/International Stud. 2013-2014 Facebook group - https://www.facebook. com/groups/510051319053120/ which is specifically for International and Exchange students registered in 2013/2014. Important Dates: Christmas Exams: Friday 13th December - Saturday 21st December 2013 Summer Exams: Tuesday 6th May 2014 - Saturday 17th May 2014

First Year Registration & WITSU Know Your Union The WITSU team completed the new WITSU Fresher’s Diary and fresher’s packs over the summer. The packs included a lot of freebies along with the diary which we ensured contained as much information that was possible in order to ensure the students of WIT are well informed of the services they can avail of here in WIT. We secured enough sponsorship to cover all costs relating to the diary through advertising of various Local and National Businesses. As a team we successfully managed to introduce ourselves to the majority of new students on all 1st year registration days and International welcome days. These are very important days in the lives of our new students in ensuring that they know who we in WITSU are and exactly how we can help them throughout their time here in college. We had a big sign up drive to our WITSU Facebook page and secured almost 2000 new followers. Along with this we had WITSU know your union week which has proven a great success this year. This involved covering all campuses with information on WITSU, the officers and the services we can provide. I hope you all know what we can do for you now and please always feel free to drop in as you wish.

Class Rep Training 2013 Class Representative Training day was a great success this year with over 100 students in attendance. The training day was held in the Woodlands Hotel on Monday the 7th of October. We had many speakers at the training day and I would like to thank all who attended. Many questions were asked to the speakers involved and I believe that this really benefitted the student voice being heard. Many concerns were raised at the training day about facilities in the Institute and it was great to see the topics being raised to the relevant speakers. In the morning of the training day we started with Ice breakers which were facilitated by the fantastic Gary Power who really helped everyone to get to know each other and to get proactive in the group. Here are the departments who gave a presentation on the day: · Campus Services · Computer Services · Library · Student Life and Learning · USI (Union of Students in Ireland) · Clubs and Societies · International Office · Careers Office From the Class Rep Training Day the Class Reps learned how to be a proactive class rep and what facilities are here for the students in W.I.T. Also the Class Reps on the day learned how to deal in course board situations and how to deal with different conflicts that may I would urge students to utilise their class reps as much as you can so that you can gain all the resources you might need to perform well in your examinations. If you have not registered to become a Class Rep you still can drop into the SU and get an application form.

An Update From Your Students' Union Stephen O'Rourke - President I hope you are all keeping well and welcome to your first edition of WITSU Whats Up Publication. I cannot stress enough how delighted I was to see such high numbers of students engaged and active so far this year with us here in WITSU. This can only be good for us and the students of WIT as we go on throughout the year as a powerful voice for the students. There is strength in numbers and I can tell you one thing, in times of change in the structures of how WIT operates, the college will know they have a serious group of students to deal with if they try and change anything that could adversely affect our students. Please continue to attend and be involved in as many WITSU meetings and events as possible and remain active, we will continue to look after you as much as possible throughout the upcoming year and I hope you are all enjoying your time here in WIT this year as much as I am enjoying being your WITSU President so far. So far this year we have enjoyed Fresher’s Week, Careers Week, Live Life Safe Week, Equality Week, Mature Student and Erasmus Information Days, with much more to come next semester for you all to look forward to. As always the majority of my working week is spent representing you the student on college boards and councils as well as one on one individual case work. Please don’t ever hesitate to call into me for a chat if you need questions answered. I hope you all have an enjoyable Christmas and best of luck to all of you in the upcoming exams. Christina Fitzharris - Welfare Officer Hi Guys, I hope ye are all settling in well at this stage and are not too stressed out about the upcoming exams and essay deadlines. This year so far has been crazy for me and I am loving every minute of it. I have outlines below just some of the campaigns and activities I have been up to this year. If anyone has any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me over, email, facebook or phone. Campaigns So far this year we have had many really successful campaigns. There has been three week long campaigns such as Love Your Body Week, Equality Week and Live Life Safe Week. These campaigns have seen everything from movie evenings, to wheelchair basketball to debates and balloon releases. The turn out to almost all of the events has been fantastic, with over 80 people coming to our purple balloon release on Transgender Remembrance Day and over 100 to our debate on same sex marriage. Other campaigns have included World Mental Health Day, LGBT Ally Day and the YES Campaign which is an ongoing campaign about consent during sex and this will continue to be rolled out throughout the year. USI (Union of Students in Ireland) Since the start of term I have attended many USI events, unfortunately there have been two National Council’s I was not in attendance, because of one being mid-week whilst I had Love Your Body Week and another due to a family bereavement. Most recently from the 22nd to the 24th of November I attended Pink Training, USI’s annual LGBT training event which was held in Queens University Belfast. Casework Most of my working hours are spent dealing with casework. All of the casework I deal with is strictly confidential. Some of the diverse range of issues I deal with include, accommodation, sexual health, physical health, pregnancy, alcohol and drugs related, mental health and finance to name just a few. David Walsh - Education Officer Hi all, I hope everyone is settled into college now and your college experience has been good so far. Firstly I would like to wish everyone the very best in your exams this coming semester and if anybody has any issues regarding examinations please feel free to contact me. Also if there is are external issues that might affect your exam performance please feel free to drop into my office anytime. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Students’ Union this year so far. Most of my time on a day to day basis would be taken up by individual casework but I have been part of many campaigns this year. Under my remit I run the Class Representative System which has proven to be very effective this year. There has been a great turn out at Class Rep council and I would like to thank all the Reps who have been very helpful this year. I am currently working on a peer support system to help first years with their induction into the Institute. In many cases this can be a daunting experience which has led to many students deregistering. If anyone would like to be involved in the research with this topic please feel free to contact me. I will be running teaching awards next semester and I would encourage students to vote for their lecturers who inspire them. I think praise has to be given to lecturers who prove outstanding to students learning experiences. Also we can show that W.I.T has many outstanding courses to offer. Once again I cannot stress enough to overlook your exam timetable and print off the exam schedule which is in this copy of What’s Up . This is will prove essential in time management when studying for exams. If you have any queries please feel free to contact myself or the rest of the team. The question not asked is a question unanswered. All the best, David Walsh 086-0499842 education@witsu.ie

Tom Cronin - WITSU Communications Officer The role of communications is only part time so when it comes to an officer report there isn’t lots of casework that other roles may include however I still have made an impact on my role this year. My first project was to get a communications facebook page up and running which I have done and it has now been up and running for a couple of months. My next assignment was to update the WITSU website which I will continue to do so throughout the year at regular intervals. I’ll keep updating the website and facebook page to keep all students up to date with whats going on around campus along with help the other officers organise and run events.

www.witsu.ie As communications officer I have taken it upon myself to keep the official WITSU website fully up to date with everything happening and upcoming. I will do regular updates throughout the year that feature what has happened, what is going to happen and if need be a quick report from the other officers. These updates will be live on the website the minute I publish them and I will post links to the updates on my communications page. All in all the two things I am doing kind of go hand in hand and sum up my role for the year. I’m here to promote and communicate everything that is going on around campus so keep your eyes peeled for updates and be in the know.

WITSU Communications Facebook Page

www.witsu.ie

There is now a Facebook page representing the position of communications. As the communications officer I felt it was necessary to set up a page to help promote anything that needs to be promoted around WIT be it academic or social. The page is new so is only just up and running and the hope is that it can become a big help for students around the college and a bit of back up towards the main WITSU Facebook page. The page is called WITSU Communications so it would be greatly appreciated if you search for it and give it a like as it will be beneficial to all students. I said in my manifesto when I ran for this position that I would set up a Facebook page and I am delighted to say I have successfully done so, now I need you to help me out and find it. Any questions just private message the comms page or e-mail me at communications@witsu.ie

Robin Spencer - Entertainments Officer Hi Everyone, This small article is an update on the subject of entertainment in the college since the start of the year. Since the first day of term back in September it was all guns blazing towards preparation for Fresher’s Week. As you all know it was a very successful week and all enjoyed it. Apart from organising such events in the college I have been working on getting hoodies for classes and helping to organise class trips. By this I mean getting in contact with various nightclubs around the country and different transportation companies working out the best possible deals for students. Over the Christmas holiday’s period we have organised graduation balls for three different nights in January and this is the first time something like this has been done for our graduates. Hopefully it will be a success and it will be carried on in the future, as this is a nice gesture to our graduates who are fully deserved of such an event. Over the Christmas period and into the New Year ill be working hard on the preparation for this years R.A.G week with many great ideas for acts and events. R.A.G Week has always been a successful week in WIT and long may it continue, as it is great to see us raise huge funds for charities on a yearly basis. If anybody has any queries about anything to do with entertainment don’t hesitate to drop me an email or pop into the student union office. Pink Training is held by The Union of Students in Ireland every year in participation with one college each year. This year it was held in Belfast in conjunction with Queens University Belfast. Pink Training is now in its 21st year of being run and it is the largest LGBT Training event of its kind in Europe. It is also one of the largest training event that USI run. Its popularity has increased greatly over the last few years and this year saw over 350 delegates from many colleges around the country. Each year WIT LGBT sends a a delegaton of about 20 people to the conference. Attendee’s benefit from being able to attend some amazing talks and workshops such as Trans*101, Hetronormativity, Gender Recongnition, How to support someone coming out, Sexual Empowerment and Sexual Health workshops to name but a few. These workshops are run by the best faciliatiors in each area. This year also seen Jeff Dudgeon attend as the keynote speaker for his immensly important role in the decriminalisation of homosexual behaviour in Northern Ireland. These workshops are held over the course of the weekend and also include safe spaces for anyone who wants to explore other areas not included in workshops. This year in WIT LGBT sent 18 delegates all ranging in different identities such as lesbian, gay, bisexual or ally’s. each and every delegate had 101 things to say and to praise over the weekend with even a few of our allys saying it had opened their eyes to completlty diffferent aspects in life and that it would stay with them forever. The only drawback a few said was the five hours drive back with a few sore heads on the Sunday afternoon but we survived it…. Eventually. It would definitely be something for anybody who wants to experience every aspect of student life to consider for next year . Also by asking any of our members at any LGBT stands you may see on campus in the coming weeks you may get a better idea of how the event went. As always if anybody has any other queries or would like some information on some of the workshops prwwovided please don’t hesitiate to contact the WIT LGBT Society at Witlgbt1@gmail.com Or on our facebook page www.facebook.com/wit.lgbt By Robert Hynes Secretary of WIT LGBT

WIT Club Fresher Hurling

WIT fresher hurling side have had tough start to the college hurling careers as they had some great battles and some fantastic performances over the first three months of the season. The first game of the campaign ended in a pulsating draw with the University of Limerick in WIT sports campus. With so much club action still on at this time of the year it’s been difficult for manager Ray O’Brien and his selectors to get a full squad together so far this season and with provincial, minor and under 21 games clashing wins have so far been hard to come by. However with the league campaign now out of the way the team are now focussing on the championship and with big tests ahead it’s hoped that the team will stand up to the challenge and find the winning formula.

Senior Hurling

Coming off the back of a strong championship campaign in the 2013 Fitzgibbon Cup , the senior hurling squad of 2014 are already putting in the hard yards ahead of an assault on this year’s Fitzgibbon Cup. Colm Bonnar and his back room team have assembled an impressive bunch of players despite losing some keys players from last year. The league campaign was used to blood players and form a strong team bond. The most impressive result of the league campaign was a draw with UCC on a 1-18 to 2-15 score line. The draw for the Fitzgibbon Cup takes place on the 11th of December in Croke Park and the real preparations can be done then once the opposition is known.

Fresher Football

On the football front for our new crew of first years have been striving very hard to make the break through and their best moment of the league campaign came with a very good away victory against LIT. Two very close defeats followed in their other group games against Mary I and Tralee but the side has developed well for the first few months of the campaign and manager Pierce Doherty is very hopeful of a successful championship after Christmas.

Senior Football

Emmet Doherty the manager of the WIT men’s football team is eagerly anticipating what is coming after Christmas for the WIT senior football side, as there is a huge buzz and excitement about the team this season, with huge numbers at training and some very impressive matches under their belts also. The boys qualified for the league semi -final where they lost out closely to a very strong UL team who compete at Sigerson Cup level. Next up for WIT is the Trench Cup draw which takes places on the 11th of December in Croke Park.

Camogie After collecting a fifth Ashbourne Cup on the trot last year it’s been back to business with training and league games for the WIT camogie crew of 2014 who have begun their quest to be in the ‘Mix for Six’ . The league campaign was a great opportunity to mix some of the new talented players joining the WIT ranks with some of the stalwarts of the past five years. The league campaign saw a senior and intermediate team take part. The senior team had a very impressive win over UCC on a 3-15 to 1-9 score line before going down by six points to UL. In the semi-final the senior team lost out by a small margin to a very strong DIT side. In September there was a strong WIT representation in Croke Park for the All Ireland camogie finals with Kilkenny, Laois and Kildare girls who had current or former WIT students on board. Kilkenny were back boned by WIT talent of past and present with Captain Michelle Quilty along with her fellow team mates Edwina Keane, Ann Dalton, Katie Power, Denise Gaule, Shelly Farrell, Collette Dormer, Ann Marie Lennon, Emma Comerford and Aine Fahy involved in their heart breaking defeat to Galway. Kildare beat Laois in the All Ireland junior final and had two WIT players in their ranks namely Carol Nolan and Aoife Trant, on the beaten Laois side were last year’s Ashbourne captain Sarah Anne Fitzgerald and Sharon Moylan.

Ladies Football WIT ladies football team lost out in both of their league games in 2013 going down to IT Carlow and Tralee IT as they continue to work hard to get to know each other as a team as there are only five players from last year’s team still involved this season. The fresher blitz was a great day out for the first years until they lost out in the junior final to Mary I on a two point margin and WIT also lost the services of Mairead Daly on the day through injury and everyone in WIT GAA Club wishes Mairead a speedy recovery , incidentally Mairead Daly was named TG4 Ladies football player of the year for 2013 after helping her county Offaly to win the Junior All Ireland final with former WIT dual star Lorraine Keena also on the panel while Wexford players Katie Redmond, Clara Donnelly and Aisling Murphy also lined out in the All Ireland final.

Best of luck to Jason who travels to America over the Christmas holidays to take part in the US National Junior championships, while the singles competition in the 40 x 20 court takes place after Christmas in Kingscourt.

Off the Booze, On the Ball

Now entering its third year, the GAA’s ‘Off the Booze & On the Ball’ challenge is extending its positive message about alcohol consumption and healthier lifestyles into third level education sector. The aim of the programme is to promote healthier lifestyles among students in college in WIT. This will involve members of our sports clubs going off alcohol for a month, sponsorship cards will be given out and all the money raised will go to a charity to be chosen by players of the college. The programme will be launched and packs will be given out in the college in the coming days.
