ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

A NEW DIRECTION FOR THOMAS BARKER As I begin to prepare for the New Year, I can’t help but think about all of the incredible events that have taken place over the past year. For me personally 2011 has been a roller coaster of emotions, events, and experiences. For those of you who have known me, before I began writing for Wire seven years ago, I actually owned a marketing company called Muse Entertainment, which I operated simultaneously until my fellow publisher Rafa Carvajal decided to buy Wire Magazine three years ago. Although Wire Magazine was always important to me, at that time, it became my only priority, which is why I decided to close my marketing company and focus exclusively on making Wire Magazine one of the most wonderful gay publications in South Florida. Over the past three years, Wire Magazine has only grown in terms of content, distribution, and readership, and a lot of that has to do with the interview opportunities I have received while managing the publication with Rafa. Between the celebrity interviews I have done with Chelsea Handler, The Kardashians, and Joan Rivers among many others, local personalities and influencers, and advocates that are changing the world as we know it on a daily basis, I have been so blessed with the chance to write about so many wonderful and interesting people over the past seven years.

As I prepare for the New Year, I am finally taking the time to actually look back at the past seven years of blood, sweat, and tears I have put into this publication, and I can honestly say that I can’t help but feel more proud of what I have done here. However, as Wire Magazine began to grow and evolve so did I, and in January of 2011, I received the opportunity to re-launch my marketing company again under a new name and brand known as TEB Entertainment. And I have been fortunate enough to have worked with and retain some of the most fantastic clients, including MOVA Miami, MOVA D.C., Brown Forman Beverages, Chambord Vodka in New York City, adidas SLVR, Granda Entertainment, BASE on Lincoln Road, and many others. Staying true to my first love and passion, TEB Entertainment had and will always have its roots planted firmly in the LGBT community. As an LGBT activist, I have always made it a priority to support a number of LGBT organizations through my editorial, monetary contributions, and volunteerism, and TEB Entertainment will certainly do the same. For the past year, I have worked for Wire Magazine and TEB Entertainment simultaneously, giving both my heart and soul and loving every single second of it! However, as TEB Entertainment began to blossom, Wire Magazine was also growing, and the time I had available to manage and produce Wire Magazine on a weekly basis began to dwindle. This is why I have made the very difficult decision to resign as publisher and executive editor of Wire Magazine at the end of the year.

COVER PHOTO BY CRIBB VISUALS

This will be, in fact, my last issue with Wire in that capacity. As I write this, I can’t help but feel a bundle of mixed emotions. I am beyond sad to be leaving a publication I have worked so hard on and that has been such an important part of my life. In a lot of ways, Wire Magazine has become a major part of my identity, and removing that part is certainly a painful experience; yet, I am also very excited and eager to continue growing TEB Entertainment. So much has happened in such a short amount of time, I can’t help but look forward to the road ahead. I would like to close my final column by saying thank you to so many wonderful people, who have made this experience of a lifetime one I will never forget and am truly grateful for. To the many advertisers who have supported Wire Magazine and me over the years, your dedication to our community has kept this magazine alive and I hope it will do so for many years to come. My former publisher and boss, Carl Zablotny: thank you for giving me the chance to find my voice. My fellow publisher Rafa for sticking with Wire through the good and the bad. To Wire Magazine’s design director and one of my best friends Jose Gonzalez, you have taught me that graphic design is truly an art form, and your talent amazes me on a daily basis. And to all of the readers who have continued to read the thousands of articles I have written over the years, you have changed my life. Happy New Year everyone! WIRE COVER: WIRE MAGAZINE’S PERSON OF THE YEAR

BY THOMAS BARKER As we wrap up 2011 and gear up for the upcoming year, it is so important to remember all of the wonderful events and people that have affected our lives, bettering us as a community and as individuals. Throughout the year, we have featured dozens of people who have touched our lives in some capacity. Whether it is a local restaurateur or a mega super star, it is impossible to think that we can just glide through life without feeling the affects of other people’s positive energy and actions. This is why we dedicate our last issue of the year to the top ten people we have featured in Wire Magazine over the year, one of which we select as Wire Magazine’s Person of the Year. Over the next few pages, you will get the chance to be re-introduced to 10 people who have really had a positive impact on our community. But before we get into the thick of it, I am very proud to announce that Wire Magazine’s 2011 Person of the Year is the magnanimous Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga first appeared on the gay scene less than a decade ago, performing at gay lounges around the country, including Miami. In fact, the first time I ever heard of Lady Gaga was at Score four years ago while partying it up on a Saturday night. Lady Gaga happened to be there performing one of her new singles, and, as usual, she was sporting some pretty outrageous garb. Her outfits and dance numbers were so over the top, I actually thought she was a drag queen. Little did I know that in less than a year, Momma Monster would be going mainstream in a big way, quickly becoming one of the biggest pop stars of all time – and while she rode the mega wave to the top of the Billboard charts, Lady Gaga never once forgot where she got her start and who her friends were.

As Lady Gaga’s star grew brighter and brighter, more and more light was shed on the LGBT community and the issues that affect us. Lady Gaga performed at gay pride events around the world, she protested alongside us at rallies for equal rights, and has dedicated a countless number of songs to the LGBT community. This past year, Lady Gaga released her second album, Born This Way as a homage to the LGBT community. The title track off the album has become a legendary song and an anthem for the gay community, while also putting the issue of LGBT equality in the homes and minds of the mainstream public. For the first time, the biggest star in the universe was not only pro-gay; she was relentless in protecting our community. After the initial release of her album, she negotiated a deal with Target stores to release a deluxe edition of the album; however, Lady Gaga walked away from the negotiating table when Target, which has been known to donate to conservative anti-gay organizations, refused to not only provide equal rights for its employees, but also stop making donations to anti-gay organizations. The gay community was immediately in an uproar and protests and boycotts of the store began on an international level, and at the forefront of the movement was Miss Gaga herself. Most recently Lady Gaga announced the creation of the Born This Way Foundation, which will support programs and initiatives that deal with all aspects of empowering youth. The nonprofit charitable organization will lead youth into a braver new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be. BTWF will focus on youth empowerment and equality by addressing issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career

development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change. “My mother and I have initiated a passion project. We call it the Born This Way Foundation. Together we hope to establish a standard of Bravery and Kindness, as well as a community worldwide that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment,” said Lady Gaga. Led and directed by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, BTWF will partner with the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and The California Endowment, which are both ranked among the top foundations in the country, and focus on unique aspects of youth empowerment. The foundation will also partner with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, one of the most cutting edge institutions in the country focusing on the power of the Internet as a means to promote change. “It seems Hollywood launches foundations all the time, but I can’t recall an artist of Lady Gaga’s reach or caliber who has done the months of due-diligence and behind-the-scenes meetings with the experts before they’ve launched such a foundation,” said John Palfrey, Harvard law professor and co-director of Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. He also added, “if this dedication and thoroughness is any indication of what is to come when this program launches, the Born This Way Foundation has the potential to transform the foundation community the same way Lady Gaga is transforming the music industry.” Overall, Lady Gaga has and continues to be a beacon of hope that the LGBT community will one day know equality. Between her actions as an artist and an activists, Lady Gaga has not only become an iconic gay icon, she has become a phoenix of change, which is why she is Wire Magazine’s 2011 Person of the Year.

WIRE COVER: WIRE MAGAZINE’S PERSON OF THE YEAR Over the past few years an epidemic that has plagued the gay community for years got the spot light and, for the first time in our history, gay suicide became a popular issue for celebrities, community leaders, and organizations to step up their game. Katy Perry, who dedicated a song to it, Lady Gaga, who dedicated an entire album, and Dan Savage, who founded the It Get’s Better Project, have all made it a point to show our community that it really does get better and that we are all special in our own way. This year, we featured someone who has been working to prevent LGBT suicide even before it became a popular issue. Switchboard of Miami’s Chief Executive Officer Catherine Penrod received the Wachovia Non-Profit Organization of the Year Award at the Miami Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Gala, and we could not have agreed more with their selection. I remember the first time I met Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. I was working with Equality Florida at one of their major donor events, and the room was abuzz with talk about the appearance of the famous Congresswoman. From stories of her continued support of our community by placing LGBT rights at the forefront of her platform to her serving as the founding Vice President of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, this woman just seemed to be one of our biggest allies, and I can honestly say that when I actually put the face to the name, I could see why. Congresswoman WassermanSchultz has regularly stood up for our community, and many other minority communities, as it relates to equality. She is one of the few politicians that has never waivered her support, and has never once cast a vote that would jeopardize the future of the LGBT community. This is why it came as no big surprise that she was recognized at SAVE Dade’s Annual Champions for Equality Awards this past year. In our feature on congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz, I got the chance to chat with 15 | wire magazine | issue #52, 2011 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

For more than 40 years Switchboard of Miami has provided an incredible service for the gay community that has saved hundreds, maybe even thousands of lives. “Switchboard is here for everyone in need,” explains Catherine. “We are the gateway to every social service in Miami-Dade County. Last year, we answered more than 190,000 calls, called nearly 700 seniors two times a week, and assisted more than 5,000 youth and 1,200 families in other programs. More importantly, I think, as a crisis intervention organization, we know the critical possibilities every time we answer a call. We truly believe -- and help callers to understand -- that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary challenge. We help those who are contemplating suicide to consider other alternatives. We are here as well to help families and other loved ones understand if someone near to them may need help. We also help those same families deal with the loss of someone to suicide.” In regards to being recognized by the Chamber for her work with the Switchboard of Miami, Catherine responded, “When we learned of this incredible honor, I was stunned. In this community we are blessed with many organizations that are equally deserving. Because our organization has roots in the gay and lesbian community, the recognition is extremely significant and quite touching.” Most recently Catherine, along with former Switchboard of Miami Board Member Ed Straub, launched the Project TOP program for LGBT youth. “Project TOP is Switchboard’s program that works with teens that are LGBTQ,” continues Catherine. “We help them deal with their personal issues as well as school and job related issues. Each year our youth are involved with the fabulous Gay Pride event on Miami Beach. I’ve met some of the young people in our program and, as you might imagine, some of their stories are just heart wrenching. So many of them have said that they just do not know what would have happened to them without Switchboard’s direct support.” Catherine’s hard work in LGBT suicide prevention has saved a countless amount of lives, making her one of our People of the Year. one of the biggest LGBT advocates in Congress and learn firsthand all of the amazing things she has done for our community. “I am proud to represent South Florida, with its vibrant LGBT community, in Congress, and I am especially proud to be a founding Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus,” explains congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz. “In that capacity, I build consensus among my colleagues for important LGBT initiatives, including extending equal rights, repealing discriminatory laws, eliminating hate-motivated violence, and improving the health and well-being for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender. I’ve always focused on civil rights – it goes to the core of my public service. America is at its strongest when all of our citizens have equal access to our guaranteed life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.” 2011 was also a very important year for the LGBT community as President Obama finally repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which would not have been possible without the support of political leaders like congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz. “My heart was full when President Obama signed into law the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz explains. “I am so proud of all the Congressional leaders who came together with our President to finally make this dishonorable policy a thing of the past. This is just the first of many major victories that are achievable when we all work together. “President Obama has also extended benefits to same-sex partners of Federal employees, hired and appointed a record number of qualified LGBT Americans to significant positions, launched high profile anti-bullying initiatives, and lifted the HIV Entry Ban —just to name a few major steps forward.” We love you congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz, which is why you are one of our People of the Year.

WIRE COVER: WIRE MAGAZINE’S PERSON OF THE YEAR We’ve come a long way since HIV/AIDS first appeared on the scene 30 years ago in 1981 on the West Coast of the United States. Over the course of the past 30 years, billions of dollars in research, prevention, and treatment has somewhat diminished the idea that HIV/AIDS is a gay disease and is, in fact, an epidemic that knows no sexuality, gender, age, or race. And that is no more evident than in our very own backyard, as Miami-Dade ranks third in the country in terms of people living with HIV. And as for the gay community, 1 in 8 white men, 1 in 8 black men, and 1 in 12 Hispanic men in Miami-Dade are living with HIV. Luckily there are people like our next Person of the Year runner up who continue to work on a daily basis to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. This past December, I had the privilege of interviewing one of the sexiest HIV/AIDS

It’s hard to believe that Wire Magazine has been around for almost 25 years, providing the LGBT community with access to everything that glitters in South Florida. This past summer, we got the chance to come full circle and celebrate one of Wire Magazine’s original nightlife writers and current Wired on the Arts writer, James Cubby, as he released his first fictional novel, South Beach Star. When James Cubby first mentioned his book, I couldn’t have been more excited to read it. Like me, Cubby, as he is lovingly referred to by his friends, was a small town guy, who went from a non-existent party scene to one of the most over the top party destinations in the world, and then got to write about it!

advocates in the world, former Project Runway contestant and model, Jack Mackenroth. Jack made his way into the hearts and homes of millions when he appeared on the show as an openly gay HIV positive fashion designer. Since then, he has made some major strides in changing the negative stigma associated with HIV and continues to show the world that being HIV positive isn’t a death sentence. Instead, he has used his status – both celebrity and HIV – to spark change all over the world. “I went onto the show with a healthy, realistic attitude,” says Jack. “In a strange way I was memorable because I left early and because I was the first reality ‘star’ to be open about my HIV status since Pedro Zamora who passed away from AIDS in 1994. I knew I could make a massive impact on the HIV community by being out, honest, and show that you can live a happy full life with HIV. “I know I have changed people’s lives and even stopped people from killing themselves, which is astounding and humbling. I know it really helps a lot of people to see someone who is open about their status and doing well in their life and career. People are really touched by hearing my personal story. I’m glad I can help if they need someone to relate to. That is the most gratifying part of this whole journey.” The beefed up stud recently teamed up with The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) to release a super sexy calendar, featuring incredible photos of Jack in some deliciously provocative poses, and all to raise some much needed funds for the important research amfAR continues to do. Jack truly is making a difference in the lives of millions, which is why we just could not resist making him one of our People of the Year.

details on the various parties, late night antics, and celebrity gossip. He immediately goes from reporting on the latest happenings to actually becoming somewhat of a local celebrity himself. Throughout his journey, he lives a life of unlimited cocktails, drugs, and entertainment. It truly is a story of glamorous debauchery at its finest, and Cubby does such an amazing job of capturing what the old South Beach once was. “South Beach opens its arms to Jamie, who, like an actor taking on a new role, throws himself into his fabulous new lifestyle covering the notorious celebrity-studded party scene where nightly he mingles with beautiful shallow fashionistas, famous models, and wealthy jet-setters,” says Cubby. “His coveted lifestyle masks an out-ofcontrol roller-coaster ride of late-night parties and photo-ops, fueled by a gradual addiction to crystal meth. Like many before him, Jamie loses control and falls victim to his fast lifestyle.” And although the story may have some similarities to Cubby’s real life experience working as a nightlife columnist, he admits that it truly is an incredible tale of fiction. “South Beach Star was inspired by my time at Wire but South Beach Star is not really Wire,” Cubby continues. “I covered nightlife for ten years. It was a wonderful time but covering nightlife is a rough job. You’re really in the trenches so to speak because to cover nightlife well you have to become part of the scene. I became part of that whole wonderful crazy nocturnal scene that I was covering and it was an experience that I will never forget.”

While reading his book, South Beach Star, I was immediately captivated by the story of the lead character, Jamie Kidd. After his ex-boyfriend left him heartbroken, penniless, and close to suicide, Jamie decides to make a new life for himself in SoBe.

Yet, the response to his book has been astounding. “Several people have told me that the book has really touched them. One person told me she cried.”

After taking on a job with the local weekly, the South Beach Star, Jamie is given the opportunity to write the local “What’s Happening” column, providing all the juicy

Congratulations Cubby on the success of your book and being one of Wire’s People of the Year.

WIRE COVER: WIRE MAGAZINE’S PERSON OF THE YEAR Finding love or even just a quick hookup in South Florida can sometimes be a daunting task. If you are anything like me, going up to someone you think is hot to spark a conversation isn’t something you’re even remotely comfortable doing – that is unless I have a few cocktails of course. For most of us, finding potential dates typically means spending an evening out and about at a gay bar or club and drinking just enough liquid courage to numb the pain of potential rejection. And if you are successful in meeting someone, more often than not, you wake up the next morning with a frog as opposed to the prince you thought you went to bed with. Last year, I joined the 21st Century by finally trading in my Blackberry for an iPhone. Of course, all of my friends immediately filled me in on this really great app called Grindr that has helped them meet tons of new guys, build new relationships, and, of course, enjoy some scandalously fabulous encounters.

With all the talk, I couldn’t wait to download this app, and, in fact, Grindr was the very first app I downloaded. In January of 2011, we featured Grindr founder Joel Simkhai on the cover of Wire Magazine, and, needless to say, that issue was certainly one of our most popular issues of the year! Born in Tel Aviv, Israel and raised in New York City, Joel came up with the app after getting frustrated with traditional gay dating/networking sites. “The idea came about because I started getting frustrated with all the other dating websites and with the idea of “Why is location not a higher priority?” explains Joel. “You can search based on city, but what about the guy in your building or across the street? After having many missed connections throughout my life, I knew there had to be a better way to make it easier to meet people. When the 2nd generation iPhone was announced, it had three key elements: GPS, the App store, and the iPhone SDK, which was the software language to write apps in an easy way. These three factors allowed us to create Grindr. “The basic concept behind Grindr is making it easier to chat with and meet other guys around you - that’s what Grindr is all about. It is a way to facilitate new conversations and bring people together with others they may have never noticed or met at all. You log in (no registration required), view a cascade of photos of the guys closest to you in distance, and can click on a thumbnail to view a guy’s profile and start a chat.” Since the app hit iTunes, Grindr has grown to over 1.5 million users in 180 countries, resulting in thousands of sensational hook ups and even relationships, making Grindr one of the most influential apps for the gay community and Joel one of our People of the Year.

Within every great movement there are really great leaders, and in South Florida we have been lucky enough to have a few good men and women who work around the clock to ensure equality for the LGBT community.

Michael began his career in LGBT activism and event production in New York City, working as the media director for Heritage of Pride, which produces the largest gay pride event in New York City, and actually came on board as one of the lead producers of the event in 1997 and 1998.

Since the 1970s the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has been at the forefront of the LGBT equal rights movement and till this day continues to be one of the largest national organizations fighting for our rights.

Since Michael began working with The Task Force, Winter Party Festival has only continued to get larger and larger. The event, which began as a one-day dance event on the sand, has evolved into a week-long series of events benefiting the LGBT community nationally and locally. A portion of the net proceeds of Winter Party Festival support the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s efforts to take action, build power, and create change for LGBT people. The majority of the proceeds are donated to local service organizations through a grant-making process administered by The Miami Foundation.

Locally, The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force makes a difference on a daily basis through its continued funding of local LGBT non-profit organizations, which is made possible by three major fundraising events The Task Force has here on our sandy shores: Winter Party Festival, The Miami Recognition Dinner, and SummerFest.

With Michael’s help the Winter Party Festival has been making a difference in people’s lives and providing vital funding to organizations serving the South Florida LGBT community. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force donates the majority of the net proceeds of Winter Party Festival and the Miami Recognition Dinner to local nonprofit organizations. Since assuming responsibility for these events in 2005, the Task Force has donated nearly $1.2 million dollars to the LGBT Community Projects Fund of The Miami Foundation, which has provided funds to organizations including Miami Beach Gay Pride, The Women’s Aqua Foundation, Pridelines Youth Services, and many more.

None of these events would be possible without the support and drive of The Task Force’s Miami events director, Michael Bath. 19 | wire magazine | issue #52, 2011 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

Ten years after Winter Party began, The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force finally decided to open a Miami office, hiring Michael Bath to manage the office and continue growing Winter Party and The Miami Recognition Dinner.

Michael’s hard work and dedication has definitely made a difference in South Florida, making him one of our most important People of the Year.

WIRE COVER: WIRE MAGAZINE’S PERSON OF THE YEAR Most of us have heard the fabulous history of the contemporary Gay Pride movement. For our generation, at least, it all began when the LGBT community in New York City had finally had enough, and decided to fight back. After the New York City Police Department had illegally raided a number of gay bars, gay men and women flooded the streets rioting and demanding equality. At the very forefront of this movement – and definitely the most vocal – was the drag community. As some of the bravest members of the LGBT community, these fabulously frocked fellows rocked the streets of New York. To this day, drag queens and drag performers still shine as a beacon of inspiration to be true to yourself and PROUD of who you are. And one person who knows this well is our next Person of the Year runner up, Noel Leon. We first met Noel when she began performing at The Palace two years ago. Born and raised in New York City, Noel first fell in love with the art of drag while attending New York City’s incredible Pride celebration.

Like most art genres, there are a number of people who claim to be a photographer, cluttering the world with half hazard photos of untrained models and even worse set design. This is why my heart always seems to skip a beat when I finally stumble upon a real photographer – someone who cannot only capture the essence of an individual, but also tell an entire story from beginning to end with just the use of their camera lens. Earlier this year, I discovered just such a photographer, the incredible Rick Day. While perusing the Internet for a gift for a friend, I stumbled across his first photo book, Players. The book was filled with gorgeous, muscled – but not too muscled – men in various provocative poses in a sports themed setting. Needless to say, I didn’t only buy the book for my friend; I also bought one for myself! This past September, we dedicated an entire issue to Rick Day and his amazing photos and got the chance to learn a lot about the Greenville, South Carolina native. 20 | wire magazine | issue #52, 2011 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

“I went to my first pride Pride parade when I was 17 in New York City and felt like I was in a pretend fantasy world,” explains Noel. “I saw all the drag queens and fell in love with everything they were doing and representing. It is an honor for me to be the one to give that back now. I am up there spreading my love and expressing my pride.” And this past year, we were lucky enough to have Noel Leon as one of our fierce frocked divas of the Latin Stage during Miami Beach Gay Pride 2011. Throughout the event, Noel introduced some incredible acts and performers, including the talented La India and Elvis Crespo. “This is Miami Beach!” continues Noel. “Why wouldn’t we have a Latin stage? Miami is full of Latin flavors. Argentina, Colombia, Cuba… it is all represented here in Miami, which is why I think it is important to reach out to the Latin LGBT community as well. We also have a lot of Latin lovers who I am sure will be grooving to those Latin beats! “It makes me happy to have such powerful and famous straight allies as Elvis Crespo and La India. It is important for someone famous to be out there spreading a beautiful message of equality.” Throughout the year though, Noel continues to spread her positive energy through her fantastic performances at The Palace Bar and Restaurant. As Ocean Drive’s only gay bar, and one of the few places in South Florida left where you can catch a great drag show, The Palace has provided the gay community with a place to call their own, right on one of the most famous streets in the world, for more than 25 years. Noel is certainly not someone you can easily forget, and we have a feeling she won’t be going anywhere any time soon, which is why we had to include her as one of our People of the Year.

Rick began his career in photography after being inspired by Bruce Weber’s book, Bear Pond. According to Rick, “His images changed my life.” Nineteen years later, Rick’s photography has only evolved. “This past four years have been a big growth for me as a photographer, but I am always trying new things and have been shooting for 19 years,” explains Rick. While trying new things, Rick developed the concept for his first photo book, Players. “I have always been a sports fan and there is usually at least one player on every team that really stands out and is just amazing to look at… very sexy with a great body,” Rick continues. “I thought about how great it would be if every member of the team were just out of this world sexy and masculine. “The response to my first book Players was amazing. It was something I wasn’t really expecting, but I was very happy that it took on a life of its own. It definitely helped increase my fan base, hence Players 2.” Of course, it can’t be that easy taking photos of some of the hottest athletes in the world. “In the beginning of the original Players there was some sweating behind my camera, but as I began to shoot so many guys, it became its own entity. And when I am shooting, there is so much joking going on that it never gets to the point of feeling too sexually provocative. “Meeting each guy with his own swagger is always memorable. Some are quite shy while others are complete exhibitionists, so it is always fun to figure out how to get each personality to give me the image I am looking for.” Rick’s talent obviously shines in all of his incredible photos, putting him in a class all his own and making him one of our People of the Year.

WIRE MAGAZINE’S PERSON OF THE YEAR

Miami is home to some of the most exquisite dining destinations in the world, and throughout the year thousands of tourists flock to our sandy shores indulging in the scrumptious nibbles offered by these delectable dining spots. For most locals, the average price of a fine dining experience in Miami just seems a little too extravagant of an expense; however, that all changed when our next Person of the Year created the Greater Miami Convention and Visitor’s Bureau’s (GMCVB) Miami Spice month. Ten years ago, Steve Haas recognized that there was a need to better market our culinary destinations to the local community and created a month long dining event that would allow locals to enjoy fine dining at an incredibly affordable price. The best part – Miami Spice took place during the slowest part of the tourist season. Ten years later, Miami Spice is more popular than ever. In fact, the concept became so popular that the GMCVB expanded the concept to include spas, resulting in Miami Spa Month! It was only a couple of years ago that we actually named Steve as The Person of the Year, but it seems only right that we include him once again, as Steve has once again made some major strides in the community. Steven Haas has the distinction of being the first Board Chairman of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) from the hospitality industry’s important restaurant sector. He is well known in Greater Miami’s tourism industry for his dedication to raising awareness of the importance and value of providing excellent customer service. As GMCVB Board Chair, Steve’s commitment to customer service is evident in the GMCVB’s Miami Begins with Me customer service initiative developed to raise the bar of customer service in Greater Miami. As a result of the GMCVB initiative, Miami International Airport (MIA) has taken customer service to a new level through Miami Begins with MIA, a program that requires all 35,000+ employees at MIA to complete customer service training. This year, Steve finally decided to stop creating fabulous restaurant concepts for other people and open his own eatery, City Hall the Restaurant, located on Biscayne Boulevard in the heart of Miami’s performing arts district. Prior to undertaking his current project, Steve was co-owner and operating partner for Soyka Restaurant/News Café Corp. In the 11 years prior, Steve was the General Manager for China Grill, Tuscan Steak, Red Square, and Social at the Sagamore Hotel -- all under the umbrella of China Grill Management. His stellar career in restaurant management also includes positions at many of Miami’s finest restaurants, including The Forge, Joe’s Stone Crab, The Van Dyke Café, Monty’s Stone Crab and the first Independent business unit at the Sheraton Bal Harbour. There seems to be no end to what Steve can accomplish and 2011 certainly proves that, which is why we have included him as one of our People of the Year. 21 | wire magazine | issue #52, 2011 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

TOP TRAX: DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

BY DJ FR8-O

All the gifts have been delivered, the Christmas décor is gone (or not) and your Facebook is blowin’ up with invites to more New Year’s Eve parties than your liver could possibly handle in one night. Yes, it’s finally time to say goodbye to 2011, my friends. We had some amazing milestones this year— Osama Bin Laden was finally killed, New York legalized gay marriage, and a big girl from London became the world’s biggest pop star. It’s refreshing to see how much can change in a year. 2012 also promises to be another great year of changes; not just for the world, but for the music world as well. Artists like Lady Gaga and Adele have completely shifted perceptions of pop music, so much that it’s hard to predict what we’ll be singing to in our sleep around this time next year. Here are a few recording artists I suspect will be turning us out in 2012. That is, if we’re still here.

DEV

SABI

Ever since she was discovered on Myspace by the indie hip-hop production duo, The Cataracs, Dev’s vision has been crystal clear—to bust out some killer tracks! We got our first taste of the 22-year-old singer when she was featured on one of the year’s #1 tracks, “Like a G6”. Until then, she’d been flying under the radar. But now with two more club tracks and a full-length album under her wing, Dev’s career is ready to soar. Her debut album, “The Night the Sun Came Up”, has already dropped in Europe and set for U.S. release in January. But its unique blend of electro beats and hip-hop edge are already causing a buzz in the clubs. The first two singles “Bass Down Low” and “In The Dark” have been packing dance floors around the world from day one. Now her latest collaboration with Enrique Iglesias, “Naked”, is sure to get her the mainstream exposure she’s been waiting for.

Some of the biggest pop stars of 2011 (like Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj) started out as a guest artist on other artists’ tracks. So it’s no surprise that Sabi, who was recently featured on Britney’s “Drop Dead (Beautiful)” and Cobra Starship’s current club-banger “You Make Me Feel,” is about to take the world by storm. Her still-untitled debut album is set to drop on Warner Brothers Records sometime in early 2012. In the meantime, the 23-year-old has been in the studio laying down tracks with some of the biggest producers in the world-- Benny Blanco, Klas from the Teady Bears, Diplo, The Cataracs, and The CoStars. Some of the tracks on the new album will be a mix of alternative rock and urban music inspired by artists like Lauryn Hill, Bat For Lashes, Florence + the Machine, and Lykke Li. Her current solo track “Wild Heart” blends elements of dubstep and rock. It’s a risky move, but the result just might turn out to be the new sound of pop for 2012.

KARMIN

When you’re the son of a DJ and percussionist in Jersey, it’s not difficult to see what direction your career is headed. In the case of KDrew, music isn’t just in his blood; it’s all he’s ever known. K (Kevin) Drew has been dabbling in music since he was 14-years-old. He started out remixing some of his favorite artists like Prince and Janet Jackson using his father’s digital workstation and 8-track recorder, which later led to writing and composing his own original music. His current project is a 7-part EP titled, “Free”, which showcases both his vocal and production skills. “Free” is being released one part at a time via his website Kdrewmusic.com. With influences like Coldplay, Michael Jackson, and Maroon 5, his musical and production styles cross multiple genres including everything from rock to pop, to hip-hop, to dance and dub-step. He’s currently signed to his own label, Indie Music Group, but it’s only a matter of time before this well-kept secret falls on the right ears spreads like a juicey Taylor Lautner rumor.

If you haven’t heard of Karmin yet, don’t worry. You will! The swag pop duo consisting of Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan gained their claim to fame with their YouTube video posts covering songs like Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass”, Chris Brown’s “Look At Me now” and just about any other top 40 song they could get their hands on. Now after 150 million views worldwide, an appearance on Ellen, and virtual praises by Ryan Seacrest, it looks like all of Karmin’s uploading has finally paid off. The couple (both in music and in love) recently signed with L.A. Reid’s Epic Records and is currently in the studio working on their debut album set to drop in February. Some of the swanky collaborators on the upcoming project are Kane Beatz, Warryn Campbell, Diane Warren, The Underdogs, Hit-Boy, Audio Push, D’Mile, Kwamé, and Stargate. Their first single “Crash Your Party” is already out just in time to crash your New Year’s celebration with a fresh twist of pop, hip-hop, and a festive hook you’ll be singing long after the sun comes up on another night of debauchery. 30 | wire magazine | issue #52, 2011 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter
