PUBLISHER'S CORNER THE WORDS OF A DEMAGOGUE CAN HAVE TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES I grew up in a small democracy in Central America, often referred to as the Switzerland of Central America. I learned civics, civility, right and wrong and several other basic principles of a democratic society at home and in grammar school growing up in Costa Rica. Today, I carry those principles in my heart and love living in the United States, a nation whose democratic and civil rights principles I admire. As the owner, publisher and editor in chief of a weekly publication for the LGBTQ community, I often express my views in Wire Magazine and on social media, and I have never been shy about speaking out against racism, discrimination and other abhorrent behaviors that attack or threaten other people rights. This week, I must speak loud, clear and unequivocally against the politics of hate, discrimination, and misguided "nationalism" I see Donald Trump verbalize in his rallies, tweets and political statements. This is wrong and a threat to some of our nation's most basic principles enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It is also unconscionable that anyone would abuse the presidential "bully pulpit" as an actual bully to virulently attack political opponents, minorities, women and immigrants. This does not represent the kindness of a nation that welcomed me with open arms as a young cadet to the United States Coast Guard Academy, and that provided a young immigrant the same wonderful opportunities that have attracted people from around the world to the U.S. since the Mayflower Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth Harbor. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines demagogue as "a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power." That definition describes the Trump we see and hear at rallies, on the news and on Twitter. Words matter and can lead to gross violations of people's basic human rights, or worse. This past week, a South Florida man, who openly professed his love and support for Trump, mailed bombs to the homes of two former presidents and to several other high ranking Democrats and supporters – all opponents Trump has railed against and vilified multiple times. Right after that, a white supremacist committed the most heinous of murderous rampages by assassinating 11 Jewish Americans who gathered to worship at their Tree of Life Synagogue. Enough is enough! Demagogy can lead to murder and it needs to stop. The United States fought and won World War II to defeat demagogues, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. We cannot afford to repeat those same mistakes at home. We have a nation, a Constitution and a Bill of Rights to protect and defend. Get out and vote! Our country needs real leadership now. If politicians don't have the principles and courage to stand up to Trump, citizens must do so with their vote and their right to speak up against his politics of hate, division and misguided "nationalism."

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY never rate a movie by what I want it to be; I choose instead to look at it as a stand-alone piece of creative work and how it will impact an audience. With that in mind, if I were to use a one-word grading system to define the film Bohemian Rhapsody that word would be "brilliant." The film is a joyous celebration of the '70s rock group Queen, their music, and the life of their legendary lead singer Freddie Mercury. It's sure to be a hit with their fans and may even have them tearfully singing in the aisles; just like they did at one of their concerts. If you're looking for two plus hours of heavy drama about the self-destructive downward spiral of a rock star, this is not your film (go see A Star Is Born). However, if you're up for a few hours of getting wonderfully lost in a movie, carried away by its characters and music, while lightly watching the struggles that come with fame and self-discovery, this film is right up your alley! There have been lots of stories about problems with the making of this film, personnel being fired, actors being replaced and the like, but upon the screen, you'll see no trace of that, just a beautifully photographed tale of one of the best rock groups ever to grace a stage.

(Malek), joins a down and out rock band. Because of Freddie's uncontrolled desire to flagrantly flaunt convention and defy stereotype, while creating some truly memorial tunes, the band suddenly becomes a hit and he becomes one of the hottest singers in the world.

CAST:

RAMI MALEK LUCY BOYNTON GWILYM LEE BEN HARDY JOSEPH MAZZELLO AIDAN GILLEN TOM HOLLANDER ALLEN LEECH MIKE MYERS

Tracing their meteoric rise to mega-fame and the creation of many of their iconic songs, the film takes us on their journey, while showing the effect unparalleled success has on the group (Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon) and on Freddie in particular. The film ends with their historic concert at Wembley Stadium during the "Live Aid' concert Broadcast in 1985, where an AIDS infected Mercury gave the performance of his life. "Bohemian Rhapsody" pays strict homage to Queen's music and highlights their songs as they were written while never letting the tunes leave your ears for any length of time. The sound recording in the film is so exceptional that you feel you're at a concert hearing it all.

Finally, whomever the main director was on the film, either Bryan Singer, who walked off the film, or the barely credited Dexter Fletcher who took over, the work was excellent, but unfortunately will probably go unrewarded.

Rami Malek inhabits Freddie My take‌ I loved the film. When it ended, which I didn't want to absolutely perfectly; he's that happen, I wanted to stay and see it again! BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE ow here's a movie I should have loved. It had all the elements I like in a big screen star-studded film; it feels weird and intriguing, its characters chew up the screen with monolithic yet fun dialogue, it pays affectionate homage to the film noir genre, and it has an underlying nuance of social commentary. So why did I walk out of the theater unsatisfied? I think Bad Times at the El Royale is a case of the smart, stylish film with a great cast that's all style with no real substance. The film never lived up to the promise of its stunning opening scene. It came close at times, but the overall pacing and lack of suspense just had it sitting there like a lump too many times between action sequences to ever satisfy any expectations.

Each one of these strangers has a secret to hide and as this fateful night progresses, each will be presented with one last chance at their own redemption, that is before all hell breaks loose inside and outside of the hotel, and their time runs out.

MØ GROWS UP IN FOREVER NEVERLAND n his classic fairy tale Peter Pan, author J.M. Barrie described a place where mythical beings lived and children never grew up; a place called Neverland. If you think about it, that land doesn't seem too different from Los Angeles, a mysterious place populated with fictional characters and youth-obsessed celebrities. I guess that's why singer/ songwriter/producer MØ chose the city of glitz and glam as a muse for her latest creation, Forever Neverland. However, her first album in four years is far from childish.

On her debut album No Mythologies To Follow, MØ opened our ears to a new evolution in electropop; one that was both forward-thinking and retro, giving nods to pioneers of the genre like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Depeche Mode. This time around, the 30-year-old has found her own sound; one that's more modern, and at times futuristic. Despite its title, Forever Neverland takes us on a musical journey through the mind of an artist who has done some growing up in the last few years. Sonically, she seems to have let go of the past and focused more on the future. Fresh new vibes and optimistic lyrics make up most of the set; so much so that even the "sad" songs make you want to dance, like the current single "Blur" and her latest Charli XCX collaboration "If It's Over."

Even with the ripe themes running through the tracks, our heroine still grips onto some of her more youthful habits, like getting high on the album's closer "Purple Like the Summer Rain" and releasing all her inhibitions on the dancehall club banger "Red Wine." If the session sounds a bit eclectic, it may be due to the slew of producers who had their hands in it. Where some people may think too chefs would spoil the broth – and in most cases, it's true – this project seems to be the exception. Canadian songwriter/producer ST!NT (Demi Lovato, Carly Rae Jepsen, Zara Larsson) steered most of the way through the set, but other EDM heavy-hitters like Diplo, Stargate and Frank Dukes also took their turn at the wheel; adding layers that make this more than just another dance album. For an artist who claims to be as obsessed with staying young as the city that inspired her latest offerings, MØ isn't fooling anyone. Between every seemingly impulsive melody on Forever Neverland is an artist who hungers to grow and evolve, and who has done so in a way that soothes her appetite while quenching her fans' thirst to stay forever young.

Although she's been making music in her hometown of Ejlstrup on the island of Funen since 2006, the Danish artist made her first big waves here in the States when she teamed up with Iggy Azalea on the rapper's 2014 single "Beg for It." Her major break came the following year when she was featured on Major Lazer and DJ Snake's global hit "Lean On," and the world finally got to hear what those in the know were already relishing. Once those floodgates were opened, MØ found herself in the studio with a constant parade of other international artists. You might have heard of some of them: Justin Bieber and Charli XCX?

Also at this year's FLiFF, following the premiere of Hurley, moviegoers will get to mingle with racing legend Hurley Haywood and his husband for a meet and greet on Friday, November 16 at Savor Cinema. Wire Magazine sat down with both Hurley Haywood and Director Derek Dodge to learn more about his life and the documentary Hurley. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about the documentary Hurley. Hurley Haywood: The documentary came together after a meeting with Patrick Dempsey. He thought the documentary would be of interest to a broad base of people. He introduced me to Derek Dodge, the filmmaker and the project started. Also, my book Hurley, From the Beginning started at the same time.

"REMEMBER IT'S NOT WHAT YOU ARE, BUT WHO YOU ARE THAT MATTERS." - HURLEY HAYWOOD

RC: Why did you decide to come out as a gay man, and how has it impacted your life? HH: The racing world has known that I was gay for a long time. A high school senior came to my office for a racing interview and about halfway through the interview, he stopped, looked at me and told me that he'd been bullied his whole and was thinking about suicide. I told him my story and said that he could do anything he wanted as long as he put his mind to it. I said, "Remember it's not what you are, but who you are that matters." A few years later, his mother called and thanked me for possibly saving her son. RC: What do you think about the progress in LGBTQ rights for the gay community in the last quarter century? HH: LGBTQ rights have advanced tremendously over the last 50 years, and we must remember to keep our focus and move forward. RC: What would you tell a young car racer struggling with his sexuality today about coming out? HH: If you are gay and want to be a race car driver, be fast and go for it.

RC: What are the top three things you would like people to know about you? HH: That I am a very fast race car driver, a good person that cares about people, and that I care about the direction our country is headed. RC: What did you enjoy the most about racing? HH: The competition and getting to drive very high tech race cars with speeds over 230 mph. RC: How has the sport of racing changed since you were a champion racer? HH: I have been a professional race driver for over 40 years, my last pro race being in 2012. The biggest change has been in safety, both in how cars are built, and the safety suits and equipment we wear. RC: What did it take to be such a successful race car driver? HH: Focus and dedication. Driving for the very best teams and driving for Porsche. RC: Who were your role models growing up, and why? HH: Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt, they could both drive anything they sat in and win. #44 2018 WIREMAG.COM 21

Derek Dodge, Hurley Director Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about your film, Hurley. Derek Dodge: Hurley is a documentary feature about Hurley Haywood, one of the world's most successful endurance sports car racing drivers, who kept his sexuality private during his more than 40-year career. The film is an intimate portrait of Haywood and features candid and emotional interviews that explore Haywood's experience as a gay man in the 1970s macho world of auto sports. RC: How did you become the director of the film? DD: I met Hurley very briefly while at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014. I was there with the Dempsey Racing Team and someone suggested I get to know Hurley because I might be interested in his story, which I quickly realized was true. I got back home and did my research on him and his career and I was immediately drawn to the idea of telling his story. I pitched the idea of doing a film on Hurley to Patrick Dempsey and he agreed to executive produce. I spent some time getting to know Hurley personally before I started filming him, and that's how it all began four years ago. RC: Tell us about your experience working with Hurley Haywood. DD: Working with Hurley was a lot of fun. Having a camera follow you around can feel invasive, but he really opened up his world to me and my camera, and I think that was the best part of working with him. He let me into a part of his life that not many people get to see, and by allowing me to capture that and show it to the world he really stepped outside of his comfort zone, and that's a brave thing to do.

RC: What were your biggest challenges directing the film? DD: Hurley's racing career spans four decades. There's no way I could make a succinct 80-minute movie about his life if I included every race and every championship. So the hardest part of making this film for me was narrowing down the focus and deciding exactly what story I wanted to tell. I felt a lot of pressure to be faithful to his accomplishments while also creating a compelling narrative for audiences unfamiliar with him or the sport. RC: What is the main message of the film, and why is it so important? DD: There are a lot of messages in the film for me. A lot of the themes that I personally identify with transcend racing or sport. For me, the message is about identity, how we see ourselves, how the world perceives us and how we perceive the world perceiving us. The journey of who am I and who do I want to be is one that I think anyone can identify with. Add in the elements of celebrity and sexuality and it can create a complicated inner-narrative for anyone. RC: What would you like audience members to walk away with after seeing Hurley? DD: A lot of the subject matter discussed in the film involves topics that have been off-limits for some people for a long time. They may not be comfortable talking about sexuality or mental health, or they may not be equipped with the right vocabulary to have those conversations. I hope watching the film makes it easier for us to have these conversations, so that we can address issues head-on and no one feels like they have to keep anything in the dark. RC: Describe the film Hurley in 3 words. DD: Inspiring, surprising, and compelling.

RC: What is your experience in the film industry and how did you become a director? DD: I attended film school at the School of Visual Arts in New York City from 2002 to RC: What was your favorite part of directing 2006. After graduating, I worked in TV for ten years as a producer for CNN, Katie Couric, the film? and the Discovery Channel. In 2014, I got back into filmmaking and wrote and produced DD: I love being able to step into a world I two feature films with my husband, That's Not Us and The Ring Thing. Hurley is the first know nothing about it and experience it with feature documentary that I've directed. completely fresh eyes. That's how it was for me to be at the races with Hurley. Following RC: What are you looking forward to the most about being a part of FLiFF? him with my camera and exploring the inner DD: We're thrilled to have Hurley screen at FLiFF and we're excited for audiences in South workings of his world as a top professional Florida to be able to see the film. and all the sights and sounds of a specific culture that not many people get to ever see. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about the That's really exhilarating. film Hurley or your role as the director? DD: I hope audiences of all stripes find the film engaging. Race fans will surely enjoy seeing this story told and learning more about Hurley. But for audiences who know nothing about racing or Hurley, I hope the film is just as compelling for them to watch as it was for me to make. 22 WIREMAG.COM #44 2018

FLiFF Synopsis: In the world of 1970s motor racing, Hurley Haywood was cool, calm and collected. A five-time 24 Hours of Daytona winner, threetime Le Mans winner and Trans-Am champion, Haywood was a Hollywood archetype: a strikingly handsome man brought up by an affluent Midwestern family. Yet Haywood was often overshadowed by racing partner and volatile mentor, Peter Gregg – the Batman to his Robin – whose abrupt death in 1980 shook the sport to its core. And yet Haywood had secrets of his own. Despite constant public appearances with women, some that included Penthouse models, he remained elusive about his personal life. With deft use of archival footage and exclusive interviews featuring actor and fellow racer, Patrick Dempsey, Hurley reveals a greater insight into Haywood's tightrope walk between career and sexuality, while posing the question – will motorsport ever be ready for openly LGBTQ racers?

He resurfaces many years later for the launch of his own wax museum. The opening coincides with the sudden disappearance of some dead bodies from the city morgue.
