PUBLISHER'S CORNER REAL LIFE ON THE SILVER SCREEN This week's cover story is an interview of model Adam Fletcher – who comes to the pages of Wire Magazine all the way from the village of Castle Donington in England – with a photo essay that showcases a selection of eye-catching photographs of Adam by acclaimed photographer David Vance. Enjoy getting to know Adam and seeing his sexy photos. In Top Trax, Wire Magazine music writer DJ FR8-O pays tribute to DJ Avicii after his untimely passing. Avicii delighted Miami EDM fans on many occasions at some of our city's most popular nightclubs and music festivals. He will always be remembered as a superstar international DJ, a gifted producer, an exceptional musician and a beautiful soul whose music will live on forever. R.I.P. Avicii, you departed this world way too early, but your musical genius will never be forgotten by those of us who have danced to your music. In Destinations, Michael Sasser gives us a preview of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the oldest state capital city of any in the U.S. Santa Fe is a must-see historic city for fans of art, outdoor sports, architecture or the rich cultural mix of the Southwest. Santa Fe also has the fifth most samesex-couple households in the U.S. and is a very popular destination for gay travelers. If you love to shop, you may decide to visit Miami's Design District after perusing the designer wares by Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi and Gucci in Shopping Bag. The 20th anniversary OUTshine Film Festival's Miami edition came to an end this past Sunday, but the memories from the parties and all the great films will live on in our memories. Check out the photos from the Festival's Opening Night in this week's issue and see if you are in the album! In closing, want to highlight two very beautiful OUTshine Film Festival films, Last Days in Havana and 1985. These wonderful films also reminded all of us about the importance of fighting against HIV and AIDS and the search for the best possible treatments and a permanent cure. Both films depicted the lives of a gay man ill with AIDS, who struggles with his illnesses in the final days/months of his life journey. Last Days in Havana is a beautiful and very funny tragicomedy about a very ill HIV-positive middle aged man in Cuba and his best friend lovingly caring for him during his final days. 1985 is about a young man who comes home to spend what he knows will be his last Christmas with his mom, dad and little brother due to the advanced stage of his disease. I loved both films and highly recommend watching them when you have a chance. They will make you laugh and cry, and remind you about the importance of HIV prevention and treatment to live a long, healthy and productive life.

rivia question: what small city was idealized in song in both Newsies and Rent, romantically compared to New York as a place to which to escape for a new beginning?

SOUTHWEST-WORLD

The appeal starts immediately on arrival and wherever you travel around Santa Fe. Long ago, smart preservation efforts and planning boldly established a unified building style – the Spanish Pueblo Revival look, augmented later to include the "Territorial" look. A 1957 ordinance mandated new and rebuilt buildings, especially those in designated historic districts, must exhibit a Spanish Territorial or Pueblo style of architecture, with flat roofs and other features suggestive of the area's traditional adobe construction. The result is an immersive architectural tour wherever your travel takes you, not theme park kitschy but rather organic. You'll want to stop and admire the architecture and history of the New Mexico State Capitol, Ca-

The answer is Santa Fe, New Mexico and while in neither musical did the characters take the plunge – and the oldest state capital city of any in the U.S. isn't exactly as remote as, say Bali – the historic city is a must-see for fans of art, outdoor sports, architecture or the rich cultural mix of the Southwest.

thedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, Palace of the Governors, San Miguel Mission and the rest of the Barrio De Analco Historic District. The city streets radiate out from the central Plaza, which is the vibrant heart of the city. Although accommodations in Santa Fe range broadly, from resort to B&B, the latter might best maintain that immersive regional feel. B&Bs come in different shapes and sizes from renting a room, a suite, a casita, part of a hacienda or even an entire house. Options include a 1930s-era Pueblo-style bungalow, a Queen Anne house, a Spanish Pueblo Revival building, a Zen center or a rambling adobe where a famous poet once lived. While there are plenty of options in the city itself, one tip is to check out the more sedate, eclectic B&B-style accommodations on the outskirts. Santa Fe's modern reputation has been built for generations as an artist colony, largely focused on Southwest styles, but hugely diverse. You will absolutely want to wander the halls of the New Mexico Museum of Art, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, or check out the more than 250 galleries concentrated on Canyon Road, downtown, Lincoln Avenue and Railyard District. But you will also find galleries tucked away all over town, and you will find artwork spilled out of formal locations and appearing on porches, in yards and hanging on walls. Art and design are the lifeblood of modern Santa Fe and are integrated virtually everywhere. Indian Market, an annual August event, brings over 1,000 artists representing more than 100 tribes. A whole industry exists here of Native pottery and other hand crafts. It's no wonder that even given its fairly small size, Santa Fe was named #4 for City for Museums and Galleries by Travel + Leisure.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF TOURISM SANTA FE

The city's arty nature extends to food and from the humble beginnings of cuisine based on pinto beans and chile (the two official state vegetables) has grown a foodie culture to rival that of much larger cities, if less fussy and very much focused on local and historic flavors. While you can find everything from French and Indian to sushi and Chinese, the local taste is Southwest. Consider trying

Cafe Pasqual's for traditional New Mexican or the longtime favorite Coyote Cafe & Rooftop Cantina. But don't be afraid to step in anywhere for a meal or libation. Virtually every neighborhood will have a hidden or emerging eatery. As with anywhere else – check where the locals are going and there is probably a reason why for you to discover! Today Santa Fe counts the fifth most same-sex-couple households. Travel + Leisure rated Santa Fe #4 in the country for best cities for gay travel in 2013. Like so many other cities in the 21st century, Santa Fe is more about integration and inclusion as opposed to big gayborhoods or venues specifically catering to entirely gay (or entirely straight) audiences. A June Pride event unites the community with friends and family. One can enjoy a visit to Santa Fe for entirely sporting reasons. In years with appropriate snowfall, excellent skiing is a short trip away. Even closer is hiking in numerous locations offering spectacular views of the countryside. A little time in the quiet of the wild and you'll have a whole new appreciation for Georgia O'Keeffe's work. Of course, whether you travel to Santa Fe for the art, the architecture, the food or the sporting opportunities, you'll definitely have a better idea of why it was so idealized in song in two great modern musicals! MEET ENGLISH MODEL

ADAM FLETCHER By Rafa Carvajal

Photos by David Vance. Davidvanceprints.com

14 WIREMAG.COM #18 2018

dam Fletcher comes to the pages of Wire Magazine all the way from the village of Castle Donington in England. Adam is an Oracle database administration who also likes to model for photography. He has been photographed by acclaimed photographer David Vance in Miami on more than one occasion, so this week we bring you a photo essay of some of Adam's eye-catching photographs. For this week's cover story, I sat down with Adam to learn more about him, his profession and what he likes. Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? Adam Fletcher: I was born in Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. I currently live in a village called Castle Donington, based in Derby. RC: What do you do for a living? AF: I work as what's called an Oracle DBA. I write code, support servers and system, and ensure the sustained stay available to customers.

RC: Who is the professional icon that inspires you most, and why? AF: Hunter S. Thompson. I love how he invented gonzo journalism, reporting about being there rather than what other people are doing there. Bending the truth to nonfiction when it was actually fiction, meaning you could publish media into the public eye, break laws, and people would think it was nonfiction. RC: How do you stay in such great shape? AF: I don't, I get fat over Christmas, ha-ha. Then I feel fat and ugly, and run it off after Christmas. Generally with low carbs and cardio, plus a steady 30 minute jog about 5 days a week. RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? AF: I like the artistic side of things -- nice shots, great soft light, and timeless images. I'd say meeting great artistic photographers such as David Vance and Luis Rafael. The images when I look back, remind me not only of the shoot, but what we did that day, such as where we ate, etc. To me, the shots are a memory from a chapter of life. RC: Boxers or briefs? AF: Briefs. RC: What is your favorite food? AF: Chilli cheese.

RC: What is your favorite past time? AF: When I was a semi pro skateboarder without a job or responsibilities. Just carving the streets on a deck. RC: Where would you travel if you could go anywhere, and why? AF: Into a black hole. I would love to see what's going on down there. RC: What is your current struggle? AF: I'm currently going through outsourcing in my job, and have a newborn baby. So, studying, finding a new job, and juggling two kids, all while my job is potentially moved to India. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? AF: If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading! "Life is a memory. If you have no happy memories, you're not living, so change something." That's always worked for me. Have a great day.

REMEMBERING AVICII S E P T 8 , 1 98 9 - A P R IL 2 0 , 2 0 1 8

Inspired by his older brother, who was also a DJ, Avicii started his journey to international fame at the age of 16. The multi-talented artist began posting his homemade remixes to online EDM sites until he was eventually signed with Dejfitts Plays, a Swedish record label. Over the years that followed, he honed his production skills and by 2010 began steadily injecting his music into the world, landing himself a coveted

here are few pleasures in this world greater than surrendering your body to the mesmerizing beat coming from a DJ booth. As a DJ, I consider myself very lucky to be able to bring that joy out in people from time to time. However, there are some of us who get to do it every day for millions of fans around the world. Tim Bergling was one of those DJs. Better known by his stage name Avicii, he was tremendously instrumental in bringing electronic dance music (EDM) out of the clubs and festivals and into the glaring sparkle of the mainstream public. He wasn't just a DJ though. He was also a musician, producer and philanthropist. When he wasn't behind the decks playing his remixes for tens of thousands of fans at a time, he was in the studio perfecting his own songs, and creating even more ways to make the world dance.

spot with EMI Music Publishing. It wasn't long before Avicii's early style of deep and progressive house became a regular fixture at local dance festivals, until his breakthrough Grammy-nominated track "Levels" (2011) took his career to the next level. Suddenly Avicii was the remixer of the stars and headlining festivals around the globe, like Lollapalooza and Ultra Music Festival, where he premiered his remixes of Madonna's "Girl Gone Wild" and Lenny Kravitz' "Superlove" during his live set. In 2012, he made the history books by becoming the first DJ to headline at Radio City Music Hall. His growing popularity paved the way for the young artist to produce his debut album True in 2013, but the groundbreaking collection wasn't just another dance album. Unlike other dance albums that focused on hardcore beats and synth-heavy chords, True blended EDM with elements of country and folk, like the #1 lead single "Wake Me Up." The risky experiment proved incredibly successful as it catapulted the album to the top of the charts in four countries and to the top 10 in at least 15 others. Avicii's bold creativity was not lost on his EDM peers, such as Martin Garrix, Skrillex, Kygo, Diplo, and Cheat Codes; all of whom credit Avicii as a source of inspiration.

of a real person behind the artist." But that didn't stop the talented and determined Avicii from doing what he loved the most – making music. He continued to release his remixes and produce original songs that kept the world dancing, until his tragic death on April 20 of this year. Avicii derived his moniker from the word Avici, which means "the lowest level of Buddhist hell." It is ironic since one of his more saintly achievements includes starting House for Hunger, a charity dedicated to alleviating global hunger. "You have to give something back," he explained. "I am so fortunate to be in the position where I can actually do that." Despite his namesake, Avicii's actions touched millions of lives, and his music took so many of his fans to heaven whenever it was played. As tributes and honors continue to pour in, Avicii will always be remembered not only as an international DJ, but also as a gifted producer, an exceptional musician and a beautiful soul.

However, all that fame and praise couldn't prevent the health issues that the man behind the music was battling. Avicii suffered from acute pancreatitis, and as a result had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014. His condition continued to take a toll on his health, forcing him to retire from touring altogether in 2016. "I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform," he announced to his fans, "but I have too little left for the life
