Farewell!

A

s always, we have had a lot of fun attending Winter Texan activities and seeing the many things Winter Texans enjoy doing while in the Rio Grande Valley. The things Winter Texans think of to do for fun is limitless. But Winter Texans are not all about fun, they also take a serious look at the plight of some South Texas residents and the people who live across the river and make a serious effort to make a difference. From bringing coats for the annual coat drive, to giving their old furniture to people who have none, contributing leftover canned goods to the food pantry when they leave, and in a variety of other ways, Winter Texans help those who have less. At no time is this more apparent than Christmastime when many parks buy gifts and create food baskets for needy families. Winter Texans bring a lot of fun with them. The entertainers who come to put on shows add a new dimension to Valley entertainment. The entertainment Winter Texans create for themselves and the people in their parks is also exciting. From Christmas and Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day parades to the teas, luaus, barbecues and other special events they plan in their parks, Winter Texans have a lot of fun activities. I will be looking forward to see what kinds of activities Winter Texans have in store for next fall, and looking forward to the entertainers that are coming from new locations. The Winter Texan Times staff is sad to say goodbye – for now. But we look forward to your return in the fall. We join with each city in the Rio Grande Valley as we express a big Texas Thank You! to all our Winter Texan readers and friends. We thank you for choosing the Rio Grande Valley as your winter home. We appreciate all that you do to make the Valley better, stronger and more vibrant. Your very presence adds life to every event and activity we attend or host. Please come back soon – and tell your friends and neighbors back home about all the good times in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. During the summer months, keep up with all things Winter Texan by subscribing to the Winter Texan Times email newsSee FAREWELL pg. 27

Veterans War Memorial of Texas to dedicate Liberty Plaza April 19

By Kathy Olivarez “Give me liberty or give me death!” The immortal words of Patrick Henry, American Revolutionary War hero, will echo at McAllen’s Veterans War Memorial of Texas on April 19, exactly 240 years after he spoke those words at Virginia’s Second Revolutionary Convention on April 19, 1775. The event will include the unveiling of new items added to Liberty Plaza including three walls, flag pedestals and an eight-foot tall statute of Patrick Henry. Exactly 28 days after Patrick Henry spoke those fiery words, the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Lexington, Mass., starting the American fight for freedom from British tyranny that lasted from 1775 to 1783. According to Col. Frank Plummer U.S.A.F. (Ret), the 18,000 members of the Texas Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have been joined by the 177,000 members of the National Daughters of the American Revolution organization in helping to finance the statute of Patrick Henry and the three walls now erected in Liberty Plaza in the All-Wars section of the Veterans War Memorial. National DAR Regent Lynn Young will be the keynote speaker for the dedication ceremony that will take place at 10 a.m. on April 19. Pamela Wright, who heads the Texas DAR, will act as master of ceremonies. As part of the ceremony, kindergarten student Thomas Patino will utter Henry’s famous words, “Give me liberty or give me death,” during the presentation. His brother Jacob, a second grader, will recite the Gettysburg Address. Mayor Jim Darling will welcome the vis-

itors as many members of the Texas DAR are expected to come for the dedication. Veterans groups will participate in the flag ceremonies. Col. Plummer said that in addition to dedicating the statue to Patrick Henry, three new walls, which are about seven feet tall by 10 feet long, and ten new flagpoles would be added to Liberty Square. The first wall will tell the story of the American Revolution. The second will tell about the life of Patrick Henry. The third wall will talk about the Civil War. Col. Plummer also indicated a new See LIBERTY PLAZA pg. 24

Mardi Gras Celebration at Bit-O-Heaven Does anyone in the Valley celebrate Mardi Gras in a BIG way? Well, the folks at BitO-Heaven in Donna sure do. Activity Director Susan Thomas reported they had a 12-golf cart parade on a Saturday in February with a half dozen bikes all decorated for the event. They also had a circus wagon train with real “live animals inside too. Their pet parade was earlier in the morning with all dressed up for the event. Prizes were awarded for best bikes and carts. They drove throughout the park throwing out beads and candy to all those sitting out waiting for us to come by with music blaring zydecko tunes.

Alamo Palms holds Germanfest German foods and the polka attracted about 250 to attend the first Alamo Palms Germanfest held on January 24. Some of those who attended were dressed in German costumes. The hall was decorated with German-themed decorations.

The evening consisted of music, dancing, food and 50/50 drawings. Music was provided by Daryl and Heike Schueller along with Howard and Barb Bedient. Many German songs and polkas were played.

The event was planned by Don Sharp and Lynda Wilcox to raise money for the Alamo Palms Scholarship Fund. Last year the fund raised enough money to fund eight $1000 scholarships for students in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo School District.

LIBERTY PLAZA

From pg. 03 addition to the park will be a braille flag monument for the Texas State Flag and the American Flag that will be placed on pedestals in Liberty Plaza. It has the flag in bronze with braille on sides so blind visitors can tell what it is. They will be about three-feet across. This is a great addition to the memorial said Col. Plummer. The ladies in the state and national DAR organizations are some of the most patriotic Americans to be found. It is a great honor to have them take part in the development of McAllen’s Veterans War Memorial of Texas.

San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment

Winter Texans interested in history who are headed home through the Houston area in April might want to put this festival on their travel agenda. The largest battle reenactment in the state is the centerpiece of the admission-free San Jacinto Day Festival, held on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds surrounding the San Jacinto Monument. The reenactment recreates the events leading up to Texas winning its independence from Mexico 179 years ago at the decisive Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. With canons booming, muskets cracking, thundering hooves, and desperate cries, hundreds of

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

re-enacters will recreate the events leading up to Texas winning the Battle of San Jacinto. The festival is a full day of entertainment, vendors, food, family activities, cultural exhibitors, games and fun set amidst living history. Featured will be music and dancing on two stages featuring country-western bands, flamenco dancers, Native American presentations, square dancers and much more. There will be food vendors, a medicine wagon show, birds of prey, weavers, spinners, blacksmiths and other demonstrations, along with dozens of unique hand-crafted items for sale.

CRACKED TOOTH SYNDROME

Richard A. Young D.D.S.

• Pain On Chewing • Hot And Cold Sensitivity • Pain When Eating Sweets/Sugar • No Dental Decay Present • No Evidence Of Problem On X-ray Teeth may crack when subjected to stress of chewing hard foods or ice, or by biting on unexpected hard objects. Teeth restored with typical silver fillings are most susceptible. The majority of cracked teeth can be treated by placement of a crown on the tooth. When the crown is placed on the tooth, the pain usually leaves immediately. Occasionally the tooth cracks into the nerve of the tooth. If pain persists after placement of the crown, you may have a crack into the nerve of that tooth. Please call your dentist, as this tooth may require a root canal. Suggestions will be made to help you maintain good oral health.
