2009 Upcoming Events

MID-SEASON EDITION

Golden Hawks Ranked Fifth in the Nation With 15 regular season games under their belts, the Golden Hawks men’s hockey team is just over halfway done the 2008-09 regular season. The Hawks have posted a very impressive 12-21 record in the first half of the season which puts them in first place in the very competitive OUA Far West Division. With a .833 winning percentage the team is currently ranked fifth in the CIS and has been ranked every week of the season. The first eight games of the 2008-09 campaign saw the Hawks take 13 of 16 points from their divisional opponents and dominate the field. With a one point lead over the Lakehead Thunderwolves and a three point lead over the Waterloo Warriors it will be important that the Hawks keep on top against the mid-east division in January before playing the final 8 games against divisional opponents, both rivals have played one extra game. The offence has scored a blazing 68 goals in 15 games and is ranked 2nd in that category, seven goals off the league leaders UQTR, who have played 2 more games. This is due in part to the big line of Mark Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont), JeanMichel Rizk (Dunham, Que), and Luke Girard (Mississauga, Ont). Voakes and Rizk are currently tied for fifth in points in the CIS with 28 points in 15 games. Girard is fourth in scoring in the CIS with 13 goals. Captain Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, ON) is providing great leadership and also has found the back of the net with six goals and 14 assists. First year power play specialist Philip Magistrale (Tsawwassen, BC) is leading the defence in scoring with three goals and 12 assists and is a big contributor to one of the best special teams unit in the league.

The Hawkey Alumni Club has played a significant role in the success of this program by financially supporting some of the efforts needed to sustain the competitive level this program has seen in recent years. To reach it’s ultimate goal, we’ll have to continue to raise the bar. The Hawks won’t take it easy this holiday season, either. Instead, they will head to Thunder Bay just after Christmas to compete in the non-conference Lakehead Tournament, playing against the University of Manitoba, University of Saskatchewan and the home Thunderwolves. Going into 2009 with a record of 12-2-1, the Hawks anticipate continued success in the new year.

1993-1994 Team Reunion February 6th-8th, 2009 As part of Alumni Weekend activities Alumni Weekend Saturday, February 7th, 2009 (versus Lakehead) Golf Tournament Thursday, June 4th, 2009 Rockway Golf Course Kitchener, Ontario

Perhaps the biggest improvement to this years’ team is the defensive play thanks in large part to the defencemen; first year Philip Magistrale, third year smooth skating Chad Kennedy (Mississauga, Ont), second year speedster Tyler Townsend (Tavistock, Ont), NCAA transfer Ryan Bernardi (Etobicoke, Ont), third year Adam Maccarone Rookie Phillip Maginstrale (Whitby, Ont), rangy continues to climb statistically first year Garrett Sinfield (London, Ont), and local boy Jordan Bonneville (St Agatha, Ont). All seven guys are good skaters and move the puck well controlling the game in the Olympic size ice pad at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Centre. Another key component of that solid defensive play is the ‘rubber baron’ Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont) who has been very consistent (11-2-1) and currently posts a 2.77 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

Jean-Michel Rizk is tied for the team lead in overall points with a current tally of 28 with Mark Voakes

This is a team that you’ll want to see. They are fast, skilled, offensive, and play an entertaining style. Come out and cheer for the 2008-09 Hawks, you won’t be disappointed.

Jersey Presentation Luncheon

The jersey presentation luncheon was the first of what will be an annual tradition hosted by the Hawkey Alumni Club to welcome new hawks into the family. On September 27th alumni, current team members, friends and family all gathered to present jerseys to the first year players. There was an incredible turnout, with over 60 people in attendance to watch as the veteran players and alumni formally welcomed the first year players to the Laurier hockey family. In attendance were David McMurray, Dean of Students and Peter Baxter, Director of Athletics. Both spoke about the importance of men’s hockey to the university and the pride that comes from being a member of this team. Coach Kelly Nobes then spoke about the upcoming season and the high expectations he has for this team. After the luncheon, everyone was invited to the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex to watch as the team hosted the University of Ottawa in exhibition play. The Hawks were able to defeat the Gee-Gees by a score of 6-1. Look for your invitation to attend this event next year to welcome new Hawks into the family.

Coaches Corner with Kelly Nobes

Kelly Nobes

We are quite pleased with our results from the first half of the season and have positioned ourselves well for our final 13 regular season games (eight of which are on home ice where we are undefeated). Our focus has been on our defensive team play and we set performance objectives each game for things such as; chances against, odd man rushes, turnovers, blocked shots, hits etc. We saw improvement in several of these vital statistics and also managed to average close to five goals/game scored. We feel that if we can be a strong defensive unit while continuing to be a dynamic offensive team we will be hard to beat. Although we had success in the first half we did so with several regulars out of the line-up, including Craig Voakes, Nathan Peacock, Mike Galbraith, and Garrett Sinfield. We expect most of them to return for the second half of the season. We will also be adding three new players to our roster for the second half including David Jarram who played several seasons in the OHL most recently for the Saginaw Spirit. After his junior career in Saginaw he finished the season in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. Also joining the Hawks will be forward Ryan Bellows who played at Dartmouth

2

University for two seasons before returning home to play for his hometown Thorhold Blackhawks. Lastly, we will add Clinton Pettapiece from Christina Lake, B.C. to our forward unit. Clinton is an offensive player who put up 93 and 98 point seasons in the BCHL the last two years. Prior to playing in the the BCHL he played in the WHL for the Tri City Americans. We expect these guys will help us down the stretch and strengthen our team. Many thanks to those of you who have helped with our most recent fundraising effort to attend the T-Bay Tel Varsity Cup in Thunder Bay over the Christmas holiday. This tournament will afford us the opportunity to play at the site of the 2009 CIS Championship against a very strong field in the #3 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies, the #7 ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves, and the Manitoba Bisons. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Kelly Nobes

Message from the Hawkey Alumni Club President

Saturday February 7th, 2009 will be our 6th annual Alumni Weekend and there are 3 reasons why it is quickly shaping up to be our best event ever.

1. The ’93-’94 team reunion. For the first time ever Alumni Weekend will play host to a team reunion as the ’93-’94 team will be out in full force thanks to the efforts of Jamie Patenall and his organizing committee. It’s no secret that this group has some significant ‘characters’ associated with it which should provide some good entertainment. 2. Laurier vs. Lakehead. For those of you who have not been following along this year, Laurier is having a very strong year ranked #5 nationally ahead of #7 ranked University Cup Host Lakehead. These guys play in the same division and while Laurier leads Lakehead by one point, the T-Wolves are stacked and coached by OUA relic Don McKee who finds himself in the enviable recruiting

position of hosting the nationals in 2009 and 2010. 3. VIP at the Turret. The post-game party is getting a facelift this year as the Turret has offered to host our group in a VIP section in the Hawks Nest. This offers the best of both worlds as the Hawks Nest is a more relaxed pool hall/bar area adjoining the Turret where you can live the dream again with the varsity boys on the dance floor if you choose. I for one am looking forward to seeing whether or not they let Pageau manage the bar for old time sake. A bus providing transportation from the arena to campus will be provided and all alumni, wives, girlfriends are welcome to join the party. Alumni Weekend: Driven by Success

Not only is it time to start thinking ‘Festive’ but it is also time to start thinking ‘Alumni Weekend’. As the festive season quickly turns the hands of time, Alumni Weekend will soon be upon us. Alumni Weekend has been a resounding success, due in large part to the Silent Auction and Corporate Sponsorship – cumulatively generating roughly $13,000 and $10,000 respectively. Thus allowing the men’s hockey team to pursue opporunties not otherwise possible. Over the years we have had the good fortune of having generous alumni, and their respective employers, be major contributors to this success, contributing silent auction items and generously sponsoring the event. If you are an alumnus looking to contribute items for the Silent Auction, or you work for a company that could sponsor the event please contact either Mark Pederson at (519) 716-7576 or email mt_pedersen@sympatico.ca or Heather Ferris at (519) 884-0710 x 3289 or email hferris@wlu.ca Here’s to a happy and healthy holiday season, and we looking forward to seeing everyon Alumni Weekend!
