“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

Volume 10, Issue 1 One of Laurier’s greatest strengths is its outstanding school spirit and distinct sense of comDr. Max Blouw munity. You see it from Orientation Week on, as students embrace their university - and the purple and gold - with pride and passion. It lives on long after graduation, which is clear to anyone who has witnessed the thousands of jubilant alumni who return to Laurier every fall for Homecoming weekend. Survey after survey tells us that Laurier students love their university experience more than students at just about any other Canadian university. There are many factors that contribute to Laurier’s winning formula, but it’s clear that our varsity sports teams provide a key rallying point for students and alumni to show their spirit and foster the Laurier sense of community. Laurier has a well-known and enviable reputation for varsity athletics. Our sports teams are always competitive and entertaining; all 22 varsity teams shone last year, with soccer, field lacrosse, hockey, curling, swimming and cheerleading teams enjoying particularly successful seasons. The Golden Hawk football team had a strong season as well, and promises

The Laurier women’s curling team won a second The Lady Hawks won their sixth consecutive OUA straight championship on the ice in March.

Wilfrid Laurier University continued to excel on the field, in the rink, and on the court as varsity teams dominated athletics on the provincial and national stages. The gold was spread around with the Hawks bringing home two national and four provincial championships. Laurier athletics produced 42 OUA all-stars and five national all-Canadians, as well as numerous all-rookie honours. This is a look back at the successful season of the 2008-2009 Golden Hawks. The women’s curling season was all about defending Laurier’s national title. The Hawks regular season was great with 3-1 records at both the West Ontario sectionals and Brock crossover. The purple and gold finished in third thanks to a 6-2 record. After a 1-2 round robin Laurier was forced into a tiebreaker match with Trent. The Hawks won 8-2 and qualified for nationals but, fell 6-3 in the semifinals to Laurentian. Laurier headed to Montreal for the CIS Championships, again posting a great round robin and dominating Manitoba 9-3. In the finals the purple and gold took the lead in the sixth end and held on for a 6-4 victory over Saint Mary’s to defend their national title. The team also qualified to represent Canada in Japan at next year’s world championships. The women’s soccer team began 2008 winning four of their first eight matches and were undefeated in September. The Lady Hawks posted a ten-game unbeaten streak and responded well after their only loss of the regular season by outscoring their opponents 10-1 in three straight victories. The team rallied off three consecutive 3-1 victories in the playoffs to reach the OUA title game for the first time since 1996. The championship show-

down with Ottawa saw the Hawks come out on the winning end, claiming the OUA championship by winning 4-3 in a shootout. At the CIS tournament the purple and gold were forced into the consolation round after a 3-0 rainy loss to host Trinity Western. With wins over Dalhousie and Ottawa, Laurier finished fifth nationally. Four lady Hawks were named to OUA first and second all-star teams.

In 2008-2009, the men’s soccer team capped a thrilling playoff season with an OUA championship.

After a rocky start to the 2008 season, the men’s soccer team turned the corner scoring 11 times on a 4-0-2 run. A strong second half in the regular season gave the Hawks momentum before the OUA playoffs. The playoffs began with a 4-3 win on penalty kicks in the quarter-final against Western. Laurier pulled off a 2-1 upset on penalty kicks in the semis against Carleton, ranked number one nationally. In the OUA championship forward Spencer Cawker was the hero netting the lone goal in extra time against York to give the purple and gold their fourth OUA title. Laurier’s winning streak ended at the CIS tournament with a 1-0 quarter-final loss to

2009 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees

In October of 2009 the doors to the Wilfrid Laurier department of Athletics and Recreation Hall of Fame will open to receive seven new members of the Golden Hawk family. Over Homecoming weekend five athletes, one builder and the first Women’s Hockey provincial championship team will be recognized as the members of the 2009 class. The induction ceremony will take place on October 2nd in the Senate and Board Chamber. This year’s athletes include Alison Goodman (women’s hockey and soccer), Cathy Ingalls (women’s volleyball), Kate Jackson (women’s rugby), and James Hitchen and Justin Shakell (men’s football). Alumnus Bill Ballard will enter the Hall of Fame as a builder and the 1998-1999 women’s hockey team will become the 14th roster inducted. Here’s a closer look at the accomplishments of these Golden Hawks that led to their induction as the Class of 2009. Alison Goodman took no time to prove she was an important part of the foundation of the Women’s Hockey program that continues to be one of the most dominant teams in the country. In her first season she was named team rookie of the year. AliAlison son would earn OUA first or second team all-star honours each of her four seasons and three CIS first team all-Canadian awards. She helped the Lady Hawks win two provincial titles and in 2003-2004 she earned the Women’s Hockey MVP. That year she also joined the Women’s Soccer team to earn another OUA first team all-star award. The five-time allstar finished an incredible 2003-2004 season winning the Laurier President’s Award and the OUA female Athlete of the Year award. She was also nominated for the BLG national Athlete of the Year Award. Cathy Ingalls consistently displayed her natural leadership skills and tremendous volleyball abilities on and off the court. Cathy was a key contributor to a huge turnaround for the Women’s Volleyball team that would reach the play- Cathy Ingalls offs every year she was on it. She earned numerous individual awards

2

including the team rookie of the year, team MVP twice, and four OUA first team all-star nods. In 2001-02 as a first team all-Canadian, Cathy led the Lady Hawks to a perfect regular season record of 18-0 and the provincial semi-finals. As a captain in her last season she was honoured with the OUA West Division Award of Merit, celebrating leadership and contribution to the university community. Kate Jackson will always be remembered as an important part of Women’s Rugby at Wilfrid Laurier. Kate played three seasons in the purple and gold and was instrumental in bringing the Golden Hawks into the OUA Kate Jackson as a founding member of the team. The former Business graduate showed great leadership and was a role model on the team for the rookies and new recruits. In her final season Kate helped Laurier to its best year up to that point in team history and earned OUA first team all-star honours. She was also named the Women’s Rugby most valuable player and was selected as a CIS first team all-Canadian. Justin Shakell arrived at Laurier as a well-rounded multi-sport athlete who had been sought after by countless schools in the OUA to play defensive lineman for their football programs. Justin dressed every game Justin Shakell during his freshman year and was one of the building blocks behind three Yates Cup appearances during his fiveyear career. On the defensive side of the ball his impact was felt in many ways. Justin was second on the team with three sacks that year and his locker room presence and leadership continued to grow earning him the 2001 Football MVP award. In the next season he was recognized as an OUA first team all-star. In his final year Justin was a key contributor to the trip to the Yates Cup for the Golden Hawks. That year he was a team captain and earned both OUA first team all-star and CIS first team all-Canadian honours as well as his second Laurier Football MVP award. James Hitchen excelled as an offensive lineman with the Golden Hawks Football program for four years. James came in and trained hard in training camp earning a starting position during his freshman year, a position he continued to hold his entire career. His efforts on the offensive James Hitchen line earned him the Laurier Football Rookie of the Year award in 1997. In his third season James was named an OUA second team all-star and helped Laurier reach the Yates Cup for the first time in four years. His final season

was in 2000 and James was named one of the team’s captains. That year the Golden Hawks again made it to the Yates Cup and James’ superb play not only earned him an OUA first team all-star award but he was also named a CIS first team all-Canadian. James continued to work with the Laurier Football program as Offensive Line Assistant Coach from 20032005, finally winning both the Yates Cup and the Vanier Cup in 2005. Bill Ballard has been one of the most influential and important contributors to Wilfrid Laurier University since he was a student at the school in the late 1960s. Frequently visible in the stands at Laurier Football games, Bill has always been someBill Ballard one who puts others before himself and is described by fellow alumni as being “all about fun and enthusiastic” towards his alma mater. Bill’s contributions began as the President of the Student Union in 1969 when he convinced the Board of Governors to build an Athletics facility on the school’s property on King and University. The construction of the Athletic Complex would begin in 1973 and that was the beginning of what would eventually become the home of WLU basketball, volleyball, and swimming. Bill has been one of the most significant contributor to the Golden Hawks over the last 30 years. He was the lead donor in the 2007 renovations and construction of Alumni Field. The Country Road Athletic Bursary fund was created and funded by Bill and he ranks in the Laurier Visionary category for his total support since his graduation. 1998-1999 was a turning point for women’s hockey at Laurier. That year saw many important steps for the 1998-99 Women’s Hockey program and began the Lady Hawks dynasty that has continued over the past 11 seasons. The team was coming off three consecutive bronze medal finishes in OUA competition and had yet to break through the ceiling and reach the OUA championship game. It all came together for the purple and gold that season. Led by three all-stars Lisa Backman (first team OUA and CIS all-Canadian), Cheryl Pounder (first team OUA) and Kim Shillington (second team OUA) the Lady Hawks posted a 14-6 regular season record and matched up with Guelph. After a 3-1 win over the Gryphons, Laurier made the most of their first trip to the provincial title, winning 2-1 over York. This championship was the first of eight over the next 11 years, a run that has the Golden Hawks securely atop the OUA and CIS women’s hockey world.

Laurier Pool Update We are pleased to announce that the life of Wilfrid Laurier University’s 50-metre swimming pool will be extrended thanks to a combined contribution of $2 million from the federal and provincial governments to assist with repairs to the aging aquatic facility. The federal and provincial governments announced that they will provide $1 million each for repair work. The government funding is in addition to $2.2 million already committed by the university, students, community aquatic groups, the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener, and individual donors. The repair work began in early June. The pool is scheduled to reopen by the end of September, although a short shutdown may be required in December to complete the project. The 35-year-old Laurier pool is the only 50-metre competitive aquatic facility in Waterloo Region and is used by many community groups, including the Region of Waterloo Swim Club (ROW), the KW Synchronized Swim Club, the Waterloo Regional Synchronized Swim Club, the KW Water Polo Club, and high schools, elementary schools and Special Olympics

tend the life of the pool by 15 to 20 years. Key Elements of the renovation plan: • Replace the pool’s filtration system • Replace the chlorination system • Carry out a variety of structural and roofing repairs • Undertake other improvements, including change-room upgrades and painting • Replacement of the air-handling and de-humidification system athletes. The Laurier pool will be undergoing rennovations from June to September 2009.

• Replacement of the curtain wall and the repair of pressure-relief valves in the pool

Community groups use nearly 60 per cent of the pool’s scheduled operation time.

• Some building reconstruction, including masonry, insulation and vapour barrier

The aging facility was scheduled to close in 2008 because of the high cost of muchneeded repairs. However, given the importance of the pool to the university and community aquatic groups, fund-raising efforts were launched and sufficient funds were raised to do short-term repairs that would extend the life of the pool by an estimated five years. The addition of the federal and provincial funding is now expected to ex-

• Improvements to the mechanical space to improve health-and-safety and water quality • Improvements to interior finishes, including the pool deck, walls, drains and equipment

A Message from Peter Baxter Each year our Golden Hawk student athletes, coaches and department staff set the bar higher in terms of the standard of excellence. This past year Laurier’s teams accumulated a 174-92-9-2 won-loss-tieovertime loss record which translates to a .648 winning percentage. Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships were won in women’s lacrosse (for the 6th consecutive year), Peter Baxter men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s hockey (for the 6th consecutive year). In addition, our women’s curling team won their second consecutive Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship and qualified for the 2010 FISU World University Championship to be held in Japan. The year 2009 also marked the participation of Laurier student athletes and coaches at the 2009 Winter Universiade held in Harbin, China. I had the privilege of serving as Chef de Mission for Canada’s delegation of 94 athletes and 40 support staff. Laurier was well represented at the games as both Laurier’s men’s and women’s curling teams as well as women’s hockey players Andrea Bevan and Andrea Ironside suited up for Canada. The cultural experience was second to none while Bevan and Ironside brought home gold for Canada, our Laurier/Team Canada curling team of Hollie Nicol, Danielle Inglis, Laura Hickey, Hilary McDermott, and Erica Butler

coached by John Nicol and Ken McCormack won silver. After the Harbin Universiade, I had the opportunity to represent Laurier International at five Laurier affiliated universities in the cities of Chong Ching, Kunming, and Hong Kong. The trip was productive as it laid the ground work for future sport and cultural exchanges for Laurier teams to participate in. My Chinese hosts were wonderful and the athletic facilities and historical sites will provide a tremendous opportunity and experience for Laurier students in the future. The past year was not without its challenges. Our thirty-five year old 50 metre pool was in need of massive repairs. A remedial plan was developed which would extend the life of the pool for five years. The KitchenerWaterloo Aquatic Alliance raised $700,000, the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo pitched in $250,000 each, and Laurier students passed a capital fee which raised $1.03 million. In late June, the federal and provincial governments kicked in an additional one million dollars each. The long-term outlook for the pool now stands at 15 to 20 years. The economic downturn also affected the Laurier Athletics budget. Over $320,000 had to be cut over the next two years. Upon a program review, we decided not to cut programs, and made choices to maintain strong teams.

Each team was ranked using fifteen criteria and those that fell below the average were allowed to remain but in a “pay-to-play” or club status model. The department will still supply the infrastructure to allow these sports to compete (sport information, medical support, league coordination, and event support) however, team specific program costs (coaching, travel, league fees, and equipment) will be the responsibility of the team to generate either through fundraising or player fees. This choice was a hard one, but we felt it necessary to ensure the success of our overall program, both interuniversity and recreation. Our ultimate goal is to build the best Athletic and Recreation program in Canada. In May of this year the Canadian Intramural Association (CIRA) honoured Laurier Athletics and Recreation for excellence for the second year in a row. We will face challenges head on, and collectively our students, staff, alumni, friends and parents will ensure we reach our goals.

In the championship opener underdog Guelph, shocked the lady Hawks 3-2. It was the squad’s first homeloss of the year. After a 2-1 road win forcing a game three showdown, three goals in the third period gave Laurier a 3-2 victory and their sixth straight OUA title. The CIS championship was in Antigonish, Nova Scotia where the Hawks marched through Ottawa and Moncton to a finals rematch with McGill. The Marlets bested Laurier 3-1 for their second straight national title. Andrea Ironside, a CIS tournament all-star, and Andrea Bevan both earned CIS all-Canadian honours. Heading into the 2008 season Laurier’s lacrosse team was riding a 15-game winning streak and were on fire for the month of September. The purple and gold ran the streak to 21 wins out scoring opponents 99-32, highlighted by a 12-8 win over undefeated Queen’s. October was much of the same as Laurier won their final six regular season games by five, 13, 17, four, 18, and 19 goals respectively. After a close 13-9 semifinal victory over Toronto, a showdown with Queen’s loomed in the championship. Laurier poured in 12 goals and their defence held a Queen’s team averaging 13 goals a game to a mere five scores. The win secured Laurier’s sixth consecutive OUA title. The powerhouse Hawks led the league in OUA all-stars, picking up four first team and two second team nods. The cheerleading team headed to Brampton in November to defend their All-Girls Division national title. The Hawks came out with amazing energy and enthusiasm and dominated both routines. Not only did they win the crowd over with

their performance, but Laurier also cleared their competition by 117.5 points to secure their second straight National University Cheerleading title. On the football field, Laurier avenged a semifinal loss in 2007 by winning the season-opener 15-13 over Guelph. The next two weeks would be the team’s roughest weeks falling 31-20 to Western and 41-7 at Queen’s. The Golden Hawks rebounded with a sound 33-18 win for Homecoming and ran the table finishing 6-2 and third in the OUA, eighth nationally. Laurier’s stingy defence dispatched McMaster 29-0 in quarter-final action. In the semifinal the Hawks hit a brick wall falling to future OUA champion Western, 36-28. Seven Golden Hawks were named OUA allstars, including outside tackle Scott Evans who earned CIS second team all-Canadian honours. The men’s hockey team had a fantastic 2008-2009 season, including three lengthy winning streaks. After a stellar October, the Golden Hawks hit their stride in November with a 7-1-0 record where they outscored opponents 41-21. The Hawks closed out the season on an 8-3-0 run to finishing atop the OUA standings. Ranked third nationally, Laurier’s offence and defence were both respected ranking in the top four across the country. In the OUA quarter-final with Lakehead Laurier rebounded from a 4-3 opening loss on the road to win back-toback one-goal games at the Sunlife Financial Arena to advance to the OUA semifinals. Their rival Western would prove to be too tall a challenge, upsetting the Hawks at home 4-3 before eliminating Laurier 3-2 in London. Laurier had four players named as OUA all-stars, one OUA all-rookie selection, and two players named all-Canadians. After a disappointing 1-3 record at the west sectionals, the men’s curling team went 4-1 at the crossovers, to gain momentum heading into the OUA championships. After a semifinal victory over Queen’s, Laurier fell to Western 6-4, taking the silver medal. The national title defence at the CIS championship ended on a sour note too. A 1-4 round robin record ended the Hawks shot at a second straight gold. In the pool Laurier made a splash with six top three finishes at the OUA Guelph Invitational. The Hawks finished third at the Laurentian tournament thanks to six gold and 13 other podium finishes. Whitney Rich, Andrea St. Jules and Brittany Shaw each won gold. Rich won four medals taking gold in the 50M, 100M and 200M Breaststroke and 200IM, setting a new 100M record. After David Hughes had a strong showing in the OUA finals, he joined Rich at nationals in British Columbia where both of them posted personal bests. Rich earned OUA all-star honours. The men’s volleyball team had a solid year, finishing with a winning season for first time in a decade. The Hawks rolled into the OUA playoffs for the first time since

1999. In the playoffs, Guelph stunned the Hawks in the fifth set tiebreaker after going up two sets to none. Cameron Wheelan was named an OUA first team all-star. Samuel Schachter, the OUA Rookie of the Year, also earned CIS and OUA all-rookie team honours. On the basketball court, the women’s

final 7-11 record marks Laurier’s first losing season since 2004. Ryan Panas was the OUA Rookie of the Year and joined three other Hawks as OUA all-stars. The figure skating Hawks proved they were going to be serious medal contenders this season. In Kingston at their first competition, the team earned a silver and five bronze medals, placing third overall. The OUA championship over reading week saw Alitsha Burden, an OUA first team allstar, finish first in the short program and Michelle Lamarche take second in the Senior Silver Ladies division. The cross-country squad continually improved as their 2008-2009 season progressed. Dale Findlay posted two top-10

finishes and the Brock Open saw six racers finish in the top 20, three in both men’s and women’s. The Lady Hawks finished 11th while the men placed 12th at the OUA championships. On the rugby field, the men’s team continued rebuilding with a young squad. It was a back and forth schedule, ending with a home 14-0 victory over Windsor to finish 3-4. The Hawks hard play also earned two starters spots as OUA first team all-stars. After a promising pre-season for the women’s rugby team, the Hawks couldn’t carry momentum into the regular season finishing with a 1-4 record in OUA competition, matching last year’s record. The squad brought determination and strength to the field for every match. Megan Wiles was rec-

ognized as an OUA first team all-star. There have been a few moves for the coming year within the Athletics and Recreation Department. Kelly Lee has moved into the role of Bookings & Financial Assistant while Krista Irving is on a nine month leave. After four years as head coach of the figure skating team Melanie Loube has left and former figure skater Carolyn McEwan will take over. Cross country runners will also see new coach Peter Grimsberg take the reigns as Jeff Beech will be stepping down after nine years of coaching. Laurier’s curling teams will now be coached by Gary Crossley who signed on to replace the departed Ken McCormack and John Nicol.

After winning their first playoff game in three seasons, Laurier fell in the quarter-finals to Windsor. Two Hawks earned OUA honours as leading scorer Renata Adamczyk was a second team all-star and West Defensive Player of the Year. Rookie Amber Hillis was named to the OUA all-rookie team. The men’s basketball team battled all season long, starting off with a 3-1 record. The Hawks toughed out a five-game losing streak to earn their eighth straight playoff berth. Despite defeating McMaster twice in the regular season, the purple and gold lost 56-48. Leading scorer Kale Harrison averaged 17.3 points per game, ranking 7th in the OUA and was named a first team allstar. Travis Berry and Jesse MacDonald also received OUA awards. The women’s volleyball team worked hard throughout the season, and finished with an overall record of 8-11. The Hawks’ season ended on a positive note with 3-1 victories over Western and Windsor. Hitter Teresa Wick was named an OUA second team all-star. The golf season began with a change for Laurier, as Rebel Creek Golf Club became the team’s new home. The Hawks’ best performance came at the Guelph invitational where the team captured the men’s title thanks to five rounds between 75 and 77. The season ended with a top-25 finish for Kyle Asselstine at the OUA Championship and OUA Coach of the Year honours going to Mike Belanger. The men’s baseball team had an up and down ride starting with two sound wins. Ultimately, the Hawks faced a must-win game against Brock in the season finale. This year’s event included an inspirational keynote address by Leigh Hobson, a Waterloo native, who won a bronze medal at the Montreal Women’s cycling World Cup, and was hosted by Laurier alumna Diaene Vernile, anchor and producer for Provincewide. Also during the event, the annual the Outstanding Women of Laurier Alumni Founders Award was presented to Carol Stewart. The former rookie of the year was a four-year starter with the women’s volleyball team from 1981 to 1985. In her final season with the Golden Hawks she earned the most valuable player honours while also maintaining the role of president of the women’s athletic association. Stewart earned the female contributing most to Athletics Award in 1984 along with the Academic Athletic Achievement Award. She was inducted into the Laurier Golden Hawk Hall of Fame in 1990 This year’s event raised approximately $60,000. The event proceeds will help women’s athletic initiatives, the mentoring program as well as scholarships.
