“Hawks trymp Warriors 29-18” “Montoya rushes for over 200 yards in victory” by Mike Whitehouse WATERLOO, Ont. – Mike Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) rushed for 204 yards on 28 carries to lead the #9 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1) to a 29-18 victory over the visiting Waterloo Warriors (0-3) in front of 3,401 fans at University Stadium. Montoya was named Laurier’s Ray Owen’s Memorial player of the game.

For the Warriors, the Ray Owen’s player of the game was Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mich.) who had 10.5 tackles (9 solo, 3 assisted) in the game. “We played hard, but I wanted that one, we all did,” said Nicholson .

This is the seventh straight time the Golden Hawks have defeated the Warriors in the Battle of Waterloo.

Other standouts for Waterloo were quarterback Luke Balch (London, Ont.) who went 15 for 32 and threw for 162 yards and Kyle Schertzer (Waterloo, Ont.) who had eight tackles (7 solo, 2 assisted). Balch also had 69 yards rushing in 14 attempts.

The Hawks got off to a quick start, scoring their first touchdown just seven minutes into the game off a 54-yard reception from Alex Anthony (Victoria, B.C.). Quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) took a one yard plunge to give the home team a 7-0 lead.

Laurier is next in action on Saturday, September 26th at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders.

Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) followed that up with a 15-field goal to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead. The field goal was one of his three on the day with the longest being 32 yards. The three field goals moves Mamo into a tie for second place on Laurier’s career field goals list with 38. First place is held by Brian Devlin with 45. With the Hawks fresh off a ten nothing lead, the Warriors got on the board with a gadget play that saw a Sean Cowie (Dundas, Ont.) pass to Dustin Zender (Waterloo, Ont.) who went straight to the endzone. Laurier came back on the ensuing drive, and Mike Montoya punched in his fourth rushing major of the season. “My offensive line makes it easy, I don’t want to take the credit,” said a humble Montoya following the game. Late in the second quarter, quarterback Luke Thompson went down to injury and was taken off the field. “It was a really tough loss,” said Montoya. “He is my best friend and it’s always hard to watch one of your own get carried off the field.”
