Editor’s Memo:

O

Opportunity is what we all desire in our careers. Many professionals today desire good business connections that will propel them to other levels in their trade. When it comes to beauty professionals who work independently at local salons, they need opportunity. This is why I developed Wig Maniacs Magazine and the World of Wigs Exhibition Tour. Despite having limited resources many hairstylists look for multiple ways to build momentum in their business. I realize that hairstylists create weaves and custom wigs for their clients every day, so why not create wigs for those who need them no matter where they live. I know that wig buyers from across the world want to more options and trendy hairstyles they can rock everyday. Wig Maniacs Magazine is now a tangible marketing tool for them to not only feature their skills, but to increase multiple streams of income from our readers who are actually wig lovers. In fact many women today not only wear wigs, they live for wigs! Wigs are used for fashion, work, play, and fun. They are “THE NEW FASHION.” In fact custom wig making is a skill that many wig stylists want to master. Wig Workshops are available through our advisers, so please inquire. Some hairstylist will actually learn valuable lessons and move forward to recreating their techniques by making it their own. Why do women wear wigs? Well, they simply wear them for change, convenience, excitement, and to compliment their wardrobe. Some women even wear wigs because they want their hair to rest from chemical treatments on their own natural hair. Custom wigs are not only a need for women who live with thinning hair, hair loss, alopecia or cancer for example... They are an accessory for many women and male diva’s who desire that new look. I hope you enjoy the many beautiful and unique wigs and trendy hairstyles showcased by many wig stylists, wig makers, hair artists, hair colorists, beauty educators, haircare specialists, makeup artists, and fashion photographers featured in this issue. They are artists with blessed hands who create our world of color and flare. They are the reasons why we all continue to turn the page. So toast to you all. I appreciate you because only you can do what you do for us. I love you and may God continue to bless you all in your future endeavors.

Suggestion: Stop throwing money out the door and start branding yourselves and your work. Make your mark! Every wig you create for your clients can be your next “Signature Wig” or “Showroom Piece.” Start multiplying your most valuable asset… Your “Wig Creations.” Keep looking for ways to enhance the need for your services. We encourage you to follow Wig Maniacs Magazine and stay connected with the next new marketing tool for your signature brand of “business.” — Ask me how you can get your wigs on the shelves of showrooms. xoxoxo Sincerely,

SuJen

Angel Wigs:

I

Imagine life with a full head of hair one day then gone the next? Alopecia areata affects millions. It currently doesn’t have a cure and anyone can get it. Also, researchers are not sure what causes it. I can go on and on about the technical terms but in order for you to fully understand alopecia its best to ask an alopecian. Learn about it and what it’s like to live with it from the words of someone who has it.

With that being said, I want to share my life story living with Alopecia Areata.

Charmeka’s Story: I have lived with alopecia areata for about 20 years and I’ve experienced the roller coaster emotions associated with it. In 10th grade, I noticed a round quarter patch in the back of my head but I never paid it any attention at that moment because it grew back. However, things changes as the time passed on. When I had my first child in 1996, the father of my child left and as a result of this I started to stress out. This is when the hair loss got real bad. It start falling out but I never could see where it was going. I went to the doctor to see what was causinwhen I went to another dermatologist and they told me that I had alopecia areata. They started giving me kenalog steroid injection in my buttocks and I took that for a very long time because the doctor informed me that I will have to take this medicine for the rest of my life if I wanted to see any results. One day I had enough and I just decided to stop because the steroids were building up inside of me causing changes to my body. One change that I did not like was that my menstrual cycle had stopped as a result of the steroid, and I was giving provera to start back my normal menstrual cycle. Eventually my hair started growing back at the crown of my head but not around the perimeter. It grew to shoulder length. Therefore my hair was long enough to cover up the perimeter area around the side of my head, but when the wind blew you could see the baldness around the perimeter of my head. So that’s when I started wearing wigs. I never had low self esteem about my hair loss but what I didn’t like was when people would complain about their hair and I would tell the complainer to be glad that you have you natural crown and glory growing out of your scalp because some people don’t but I never stated that it was me. So one day I said to myself I am going to stop buying wigs and start making them on my own for myself and that’s what I did so I start making my own wigs when I was about 25 years old and I never stop. They were not the perfect wigs at fist but it was my wig. Practice make perfect.

What’s Charmeka up to now? Charmeka hasn’t let her hair loss keep her back. The subject has been her driving force to move forward. She makes hair pieces for others and is continuing to build her business by learning a variety of techniques. She’s proud of who she has become and so are we! That way she came up with her own business called France Crown and Glory Boutique to help others who is dealing with hair loss and the medical condition such as alopecia, cancer and lupus. She also takes up wig donations to help others who are dealing with this medical condition and cannot afford to purchase the high price unit. If you have any question concerning about hair loss are making a donation please email www.francescrown.com my hair to fall out and they asked me if anyone in my family ever experienced hair loss. So when I got home I asked my mother and she stated that her first cousin lost all of her hair when she was a child after her mother passed and her hair never grew back and she had been diagnosed with Alopecia Universal meaning that all of her hair on her body is gone and will never grow back.

Alopecia Areata affects millions. Wigs are a great alternative! Charmeka is also a hairstylist. You can find her online at Style Seat, Facebook or on her website. For more information:

What Is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia (al-oh-PEE-shah) means hair loss. When a person has a medical condition called Alopecia Areata, the hair falls out in round patches. The hair can fall out on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. There are three types of Alopecia: 1. Alopecia Areata (hair loss in patches). 2. Alopecia Totalis (lose all hair on the scalp). 3. Alopecia Universalis (lose all hair on the body). Sometimes hair often grows back but may fall out again. Sometimes the hair loss lasts for many years. It just depends on that individual. Alopecia is not contagious. It is not due to nerves. What are the Signs and symptoms? If you have Alopecia Areata like me, you may have one or more of the following: Patchy hair loss: The problem often begins with 1 or more coin-sized, round, smooth, bare patches where hair once was. Hair loss occurs mostly on the scalp. But it can involve eyebrows, eyelashes, beards or any other hairbearing site. Patches vary in size. “Exclamation mark” hairs: Often, a few short hairs occur in or at the edges of the bare spots. These hairs get narrower at the bottom, like an exclamation mark. Widespread hair loss: With time, some patients go bald. Some patients lose all their body hairs. This is not common. But also uncommon is a band of hair loss at the back of the scalp. Nail problems: Alopecia Areata also can affect your fingernails and toenails. Nails can have tiny pinpoint dents (pitting). They also can have white spots or lines, be rough, lose their shine, or become thin and split. Rarely nails change shape or fall off. Sometimes nail changes are the first sign of Alopecia Areata. (continued from pg. 10)

Who gets Alopecia Areata and what causes it?

People can have this type of hair loss at any age. It often begins in childhood. Some patients with Alopecia Areata have a family member who also has the disease. What causes Alopecia Areata? Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease. Which Autoimmune means that the body’s immune system attacks the body don’t know why but it do? When Alopecia Areata develops, the body attacks its own hair follicles. A person’s genetic makeup, combined with other factors, triggers this form of hair loss. Some people with Alopecia Areata may have a higher risk for: Asthma and allergies, mainly atopic dermatitis (more commonly called eczema) and hay fever (nasal allergies other autoimmune disease such as thyroid disease or vitiligo (patches of lighter skin appear). Having relatives who have asthma, allergies, or an autoimmune disease such as type 1 diabetes. How do dermatologists treat Alopecia Areata? There is no cure for Alopecia Areata. Hair often re-grows on its own. Treatment can help the hair re-grow more quickly if you require getting treatment. A dermatologist may prescribe one or more of the following to help the hair re-grow more quickly: Corticosteroids: This medicine suppresses the immune system. It can be given as shots, with the dermatologist injecting the medicine into the places where the hair loss occurs. Sometimes a patient gets a topical (applied to the skin) form of this medicine. The patient applies the medicine to the bare spots.

11 | November 2015

Today, corticosteroids are the most common treatment for alopecia. In mild cases of alopecia the first choice of treatment would be a corticosteroid cream or lotion which is applied directly to the area(s) of hair loss. Alternatively an injection of corticosteroid can be given directly onto and around the bald area(s). Patients receives shots every 3 to 6 weeks. Hair growth begins about 4 weeks after the last shot. Sometimes, it may take longer. Then you have Minoxidil, Anthralin and Diphencyyprone these are also medication that the dermatologist can prescribe. They say that topical corticosteroids are less effective than shots. And that this medication is often the best treatment for children. How to deal with Alopecia Areata? When a person has Alopecia Areata, the hair will start to re-grow when the body gets the right signals. Everything depends on how the immune system reacts in your body.

Tips for managing with living with alopecia hide hair loss. • Style your hair to cover the bald spots. • Wear a wig, cap, hat, or scarf. These do not interfere with hair re-growth. • Some people shave their head. • Use makeup to draw eyebrows. These are something’s that I have either seen are heard about from others who live with this medical condition. While the above tips can hide the hair loss, some people still often have trouble dealing with the emotional aspects of hair loss. Because the emotional aspects can be so difficult, you may want to join a support group. You can find different support group in your area by going to www.naaf.org are you can find different support group on social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. nWM

MarlenaRocks

Who is Marlena? ...Only a layer or two can be revealed – yet an air of mystery will remain. Strings of importance run through her life the major themes being God, Family, Music, Fashion and yes Hair – especially the creative use of Wigs. Wigs are like the icing on a cake, the crowning factor to a look or a mood that she is trying to create with her stage presence and/or performance. They bring out subtle parts of Marlena’s personality that she herself did not know existed. They are sexy, sassy, and sultry.

The History Of

TimePieces Wigs

By Peggy Lee Caress

Wigs are used as a restorative and therapeutic device for hair loss and for protective styling.

A

WIGS Are The New Fashion Accessory Of Today. Even some of your favorite movie and television stars wear wigs! HAIR WEAVES & WIGS THEN AND NOW

As we all know, a wig is a head covering. Whether it is made from human hair or synthetic hair a wig can be worn for fashion or for other reasons be it medical, cultural or religious meanings. Wigs are used as a restorative and therapeutic device for hair loss and for protective styling. Even some of your favorite movie and television stars wear wigs! In ancient times the Egyptians wore wigs to shield their shaved heads from the sun. And they utilized beeswax and resin to keep the wigs in place on their heads too. After the Roman Empire fell wigs were used less until the use was revived in the 16th century as a means of appearance improvement and for more practical reasons and because of the unhygienic conditions of the time hair attracted head lice much that could be reduced by shaving the natural hair and replacing it with an easily removable wig. The wearing of wigs and hairpieces was very popular among royalty. But they were also extremely heavy and uncomfortable to wear. The wigs were of human hair, as some are made of today, but they were also made of horse and goat hair. In the 18th century men’s wigs were powdered and women did not wear wigs but wore elaborate hairstyles supported by artificial hair. By 1795 the British government levied a tax on hair powder which effectively caused the demise of the fashion for wigs and powder. In late 18th century these coiffures became synonymous with the decadence of French nobility and for that reason was out of fashion from the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. In the newly created United States by the start of the 19th century, the wearing of wigs as a sign of social status was abandoned. Only four presidents wore curly powdered wigs but unlike them George Washington never wore a wig instead he powdered and curled his own hair! In the late 19th and 20th centuries hairdressers in Europe did sell wiglets and small buns but the use did not end as women’s hairstyles became shorter between 1910 to 1920. In the 1960s the synthetic wig was developed. Made of modacrylic fiber making wigs affordable.

Currently wigs are utilized by British judges and certain parliament officials as a symbol of the office. Various celebrities have made wig wearing popular from Tina Turner to Lady Gaga. Wigs are used in film, the theater and television as many of you may know. For example the wig styles for the movie “The Hunger Games” were created by Hair Designer Linda D. Flowers who also created the “Topstyler by Instyler a hair styling tool that can also be used on heat safe synthetic and human hair wigs. Wigs of today are worn on a daily basis and are as versatile as wearing hats. Wigs are very convenient to use and more readily available than the ones of the past. And they are very fun additions to a costume party or an event! nWM
