New year, new start! If you have not yet started a full-time course, or have changed your mind and want a fresh start, then January 2016 is the time to do it. Get the New Year off to a great start by gaining the skills and knowledge needed to become a: Construction Worker, Engineer, Hairdresser or Beauty Therapist. If you are not sure which career route to take, then the Career Moves course could be for you! This course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to try a range of subject areas, allowing you to discover which you enjoy and are most suited to. January is a great time to start something new or make a change, so if you are 16-18 years old, there is no need to wait till September to begin building the skills needed for your chosen career.

Construction If you are looking for a diverse career that’s hands on then the construction industry could be for you! There are many construction roles that work together as a team to create new buildings and structures or renovate and transform old ones. These roles include: bricklayers, painters & decorators, joiners, plasterers and plumbers. There are major building projects planned across the region over the coming years which will create a wide range of jobs within the industry. You will learn in our state-of-the-art purpose built Centre for Construction & Engineering (Pagefield Centre). Each construction trade has its own specialist workshops that are fully equipped to help you build the skills needed for this inspiring industry.

Introduction to the Construction Industry | Level 1

Is this course for me?

Are you unsure which construction trade to choose? Why not give them all a try! This course gives you a great opportunity to have a go at a number of construction trades to help you choose which trade you enjoy the most and want to study further.

What will I study?

A range of construction crafts: Plumbing, brickwork, plastering, joinery and painting & decorating. You will also improve your maths and English and personal development skills.

Length of course

Full-time: January - June 2016

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via practical work

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 A*-E/F GCSE subject grades or equivalent.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this course we will guarantee you a place on a Level 1 or 2 construction course starting in September 2016. Gaining this qualification will allow you to develop and build the skills and knowledge to enter employment or secure an apprenticeship.

You will learn in our Centre for Construction & Engineering (Pagefield Centre); an exceptional learning facility for aspiring engineers.

This course is suitable for students wishing to pursue a career in the exciting engineering industry. You will gain an insight into many of the disciplines of mechanical engineering practices.

A broad range of practical skills together with theoretical understanding of health & safety, maths and English plus personal development skills.

You will be assessed via practical work

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 A*-D GCSE subject grades or equivalent.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this course, we will guarantee you a place on the Level 3 mechanical engineering course starting in September 2016. Gaining a Level 3 qualification will allow you to develop and build the skills and knowledge to enter employment or secure an apprenticeship. Many of our Level 3 students progress on to university level courses at the College and universities to study a range of engineering degrees.

Hairdresser Hairdressing is an exciting industry that offers variety and fantastic employment and training opportunities. Trained hairdressers work with clients to cut, colour and create styles using a wide range of products, chemicals and equipment. Trained hairdressers can progress to gain advanced techniques and specialise in colouring, wigs, bridal hairstyling and extensions. You will need to be creative, enjoy working with people and have a passion for the latest hair and beauty trends. The College has a great reputation for providing students with the skills and knowledge to work at both national and international level in the industry. The Image Centre’s contemporary facilities include fully equipped salons where you can gain work experience in a busy commercial salon.

You will gain a valuable introduction into the hairdressing industry and learn about current trends and practices. If your ambition is to be a hairdresser then this course will help you understand what a career in this industry could offer you.

Introduction to customer service, retailing products and services, salon reception, personal presentation and health and safety. You will develop skills in nail and skincare alongside styling and dressing hair. The course also requires you to build your skills in maths and English.

Practical observation and assignment work.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 A*-E/F GCSE subject grades or equivalent.

What can I do next?

Qualified Beauty Therapists are in demand; the industry is booming and is set to grow further over the coming years. Beauty Therapists carry out the latest treatments and techniques from waxing to more advanced techniques including pro-aging treatments. The Image Centre’s state-of-theart facilities provide students with the opportunity to learn in real working salons with real clients and within a real spa and salon environment.

Kerry Hale Former School: St John Fisher High School Grade: Pass Destination: Kerry is now employed at Vitality Spa (Wrightington Country Club).

Beauty Therapists need to be open and friendly and able to make clients feel relaxed. If you love the idea of making people feel good and look their best, a job as a beauty therapist could be perfect for you.

Is this course for me?

This is a unique qualification that reflects current trends and practices within the beauty and hair industry. The course will provide you with a good insight into the high standards of customer service, retailing and excellence in specialist treatments that are required of a skilled professional.

What will I study?

Customer service, retailing products and services, salon reception, personal presentation and health and safety. You will also gain the specialist knowledge and skills of luxury hand and foot treatments, eyelash and brow enhancement and professional make-up. You will also learn hairdressing techniques including hedicure, dressing and styling hair. You will also build your skills in maths and English.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 A*-D GCSE subject grades or equivalent.

What can I do next?

On successful completion of this course we will guarantee you a place on the Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Nail Technology or Media Makeup course starting in September 2016. Former students have successfully secured employment within prestigious spas and salons throughout the UK and also overseas, working on board cruise ships.
