Blasting Old Beliefs

T

his human experience blows my mind. It’s quite amazing how we can operate from a subconscious limiting belief and not be aware of it. I recently uncovered a limiting belief and, upon its discovery, I was disturbed to realize it had been dictating a lot of my decisions without me even knowing it. And, more importantly, it had been zapping my energy from struggling against the resistance it created in my life. You see, somewhere in the shadows of my mind, I used to believe heart could not exist within form. I strongly resisted form since it would mean the annihilation of heart. But now I can see infinite possibilities stretched before me of how to use the genius of form while infusing it with soul. This story begins with an unexpected and very colorful character. He appeared like an archangel ready to shake things up and guide me to the next level of understanding. Hold on tight, this is a wild ride. This character was a former Grand Dragon of the Klu Klux Klan. This Angel/Grand Dragon was assigned as my speaking coach to prepare me for my talk at the TEDx Cincinnati Main Stage event. You can only imagine my surprise when he told me his background. I almost fell out of my chair when he explained he had been Grand Dragon of the largest faction of the KKK north of the Mason-Dixon Line in the 1970’s, complete with connections to the Chicago mob. He went on to describe his conversion miracle which had led him to renounce the Klan completely and eventually become a pastor at an African-American church. Later, he incorporated working professionally as a speaking coach since his time with the Klan had honed his highly specialized speaking and persuasion skills. After hearing his qualifications I realized I was working with the Navy Seal of speaking coaches! And, boy, did I feel like I was in boot camp. He severely marked up the first draft of my proposed speech. He suggested serious reorganization of the material, and the most complimentary comment he made was that I had “a few good ideas to work with.” I was shocked. I had felt it was very close to a final draft. His reorganization strategy was based on a proven formula called “Then, Now and How.” The only problem was I felt the organic flow of my story didn’t fit the formula. I expressed my opinion and confusion about how to rearrange the material, but he maintained his confidence in the formula and strongly suggested I figure out how to make it work. I was aware of immediate resistance. My whole body tightened and my breathing constricted. I witnessed how I felt and decided I didn’t want to be in resistance to authority. I wanted to be humble enough to take this expert’s advice. I was willing to learn. So I set forth to restructure my talk. Amazingly, in less than an hour I rewrote my talk within the structure of the formula. But, as I sat back and read it, I could feel myself moving from my heart to my head. I felt

devastated. I might have created an ‘effective’ speech according to some strict concept of form, but it had lost its heart. The soul of the message had been stripped since it was no longer organic. It was no longer written from my heart but rather from my head which was concerned with proper form rather than the emotion of the message. This brought back a flood of instant memories. I clearly could see the parallel in this situation and others in my life which had taught me not to over-formulate my ideas. I didn’t know what to do. So I called Alan Cohen on Hay House Radio. Alan is a bestselling author and weekly Hay House Radio host. He happened to be on-air at the moment I began unpacking these feelings and memories. My call was put through right away and I told him my dilemma. I explained my current situation and described a time earlier in my life when I had vowed never to allow formal training to overtake my natural heart passion. I told him how I had been a top sales person with a company about which I had felt deeply passionate, until I had taken their sales training course. I moved from my heart into my head and began over-thinking everything I did. I immediately saw a drastic decrease in my sales because I was self-conscious about what I was “supposed” to be doing instead of simply sharing my passion. Alan brilliantly said, “Tara, never ever let someone else’s opinion trump your own. Take the best and leave the rest.” I responded by saying, “I know, but I’m worried the damage is already done. My fear is that I can’t regain the purity of heart my speech originally embodied. I can’t forget what I now know about how it is ‘supposed’ to be written.” He then said, “Ah, okay, I can see this is a limited belief that heart cannot exist within form.” In that moment everything began to shift. In the light of new awareness, I was awakened to a belief that had been limiting the possibilities in many areas of my life. I also realized that on a deeper level the question was, “Do I really believe it’s possible for our human form to embody our infinite soul? Or do I believe that to truly be soul we must lose the form (i.e. die)?” As soon as I could say “I see you” to the subconscious belief and “I understand you” then a world of possibilities opened that included form and soul existing as partners together. I moved forward from that space, no longer seeing form as the enemy, but rather opening the door and inviting form in, believing it’s possible to create with the brilliance of the wisdom of all that Form has to offer while simultaneously infusing the Form with Soul; trusting that Soul is safe within Form. Soul is at the center, Form is the package. And the package can be quite beautiful when allowed to be all of its genius instead of being judged as the enemy. Wishing you a beautiful summer. Love,

“Holy smoke! What a wonderful experience last evening at Infusion Cincinnati. So, I found a journal at my home that I have dedicated to dream journaling. Before I laid down, I affirmed to myself that I remember my dreams. When I woke up this morning, I was not able to remember my dreams. But short while later, when I sat down for my morning meditation practice, boom my dreams flooded back into my conscious mind. I remembered having four distinct dreams and I journaled two pages of the dreams that I had last evening. This is the most successful I have been at recalling my dreams. I am very thankful for the topic, to the presenter, and the host for such an inspirational experience.” Christopher Bueker Cincinnati, OH Editor’s Note: Correction to the article New Technology for Women by Jacky Groenewegen in our MayJune ʽ15 issue - The correct wording should read “Thermograms are FDA cleared” not “FDA approved.”

O

ur minds have a powerful influence on our bodies— and our lives. We can use our minds to improve our lives by setting intentions to become more caring, attract love, or contribute to the betterment of humanity. What would you like to change? What parts of your life aren’t working? What’s missing? By considering these questions, you can uncover the seeds of your deepest longings. What small changes can you make to feel more rested, happier, more connected, more inspired? Embracing small personal changes can be the first step toward creating greater change in the world, and humanity at large. To my delight, I received a response to one of my emails from a consultant to Eckhart Tolle TV. He told me Tolle would be in San Francisco for a speech, and while he wouldn’t be taking private meetings, he had agreed to meet me because he was intrigued and excited by the concept of intent. When the day arrived, I was nervous. He’s revered for his work in the realm of spirituality and transforming consciousness. My father had told me he truly lives in the present moment and is connected to spirit at a deep level. I didn’t want to look like a total flake. To make things worse, I was beset by the worst allergies I had had in years. I sneezed for three hours straight before our meeting, worrying the whole time about whether I should go through with the interview. My eyes were red and runny, my nose dripping, my throat cracking and swollen. I picked up the phone several times to call and cancel, then set it back down. I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to talk to Tolle, so I took a deep breath and forged ahead. And when we sat down together, the sneezing stopped. As I asked Tolle my main questions— What is intention? How do you define it and bring intentions to life?— some church bells rang in the distance. Attuned to the present, as my father had promised, Tolle lit up and said the chimes take him back to his younger days in Europe. We spent a moment just listening, and something about the lovely sound, combined with his calm, welcoming presence, soothed me and put me at ease. “At its most basic, intention is a thought that arises in the

mind and wants to manifest in the external world. On a cosmic scale, before something manifests, it is probably already there in the mind of God,” he said. ‟In order to identify an intent, instead of asking yourself, What do I want? a better question might be, What does the universe want from me? or What can I give the universe? It’s easy to get caught up in desires that are driven by your ego, but asking those questions can help you focus on a purpose that is greater than yourself. That doesn’t mean the purpose has to be something world changing. Many people believe that following their purpose means doing something grand. The truth is, greatness may be hidden in the everyday activities of work and parenting. If you think of intention as a desire that wants to manifest through you, you can become a vehicle for achieving ambitions that go beyond your own ego.”

What Now? 6 Tools for Coping

After Cancer

by Tracy O’Neill

I

sat in the office of a man with whom I would rather not have had a serious long-term relationship for the past seven months. This would be my last chemo treatment with my oncologist, although not the end of our long-term relationship. He looked at the results of my MRI. “You have had a completely favorable response.” I had just joined the ranks of over 14.5 million cancer survivors in the US. What now? When I was first diagnosed, a lot of people told me, “This is a bump in the road, a hiccup. It’s a year out of your life and it will be over.” I thought, “Okay,” and instead of the typical response of “Fight Cancer,” “Beat Cancer,” or “F%$# Cancer,” I made a conscious decision to “Embrace Cancer.” I decided I would approach this year with wonder and curiosity and release expectations. However, since I had done a lot of research on what to expect during treatment, I wasn’t completely free of expectations and expected the worst. I heard people describe me as resilient and that I handled cancer with grace. I even heard myself telling people it wasn’t as bad as I expected. I’m not saying I didn’t have some dark days, yet managing my expectations served me well during this time. Although my year of embracing cancer turned into a year and a half, I expected the bump in the road to be in my rear view mirror but, instead, it turned into a sinkhole. No one explained that the effects of chemo could take a year or more to go away, or worse, they could be permanent. No one talked about how the social and emotional trauma could take longer to recover from than the treatment. I thought I had done my time. I should be better…and I was…it just wasn’t the “better” I had been expecting. I finally realized my life would be mine again only after I released my expectations of what it was like to be a cancer survivor. In addition to managing expectations, here are some other tools I found helpful:

1. Create a Vision I created a vision board and chose images to represent what I want to feel. This was a different experience than past years when I created what I wanted to do, or have in my life. This creative expression helped me to understand what is really important to me in my life and gave me my North Star.

2. Step into Gratitude By taking time in the moment to notice it, I shifted into my heart space and embraced love and gratitude.

3. Love and Nurture Yourself

I asked myself the question, “What do I need to do NOW to take care of ME?’’ I didn’t judge it, I just did it.

4. Stand in Your Power I released my expectations of how I should feel or how I should look. I embraced and accepted myself in the moment.

5. Create Community I realized how much I missed the community at the Cancer Support Center and went back to workshops and lectures again. I joined The Redbank Warrior Sisterhood, an organically created group of supportive and empowered women who have the same long-term relationship with their oncologist. I entered into the Shamanic Priestess Process and found another amazing sisterhood.

6. Work with a Coach My coach helped me look at my life and identify the things that were working and the things I wanted to change. She helped me take back my power and I am forever grateful. I never expected survivorship to be as challenging as it has been for me, and now I am inspired to share what I have learned to help others manage their expectations. I can’t change the fact I had cancer. What I can change is how I live the rest of my life…and I choose to embrace it. Storms and Fireworks 5 Tips

to

Calm Scared

Pets

by Mary Harris

W

arm weather is here! That means enjoying summertime fun and outdoor activities with dogs, cats, horses and more. It also means we are in the thunderstorm and fireworks season. Many pet owners share the same concerns as Brenda who sent me this letter: Dear Mary, I dread the advent of warm weather because my little Bichon, Marcie, is terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks. If I’m gone to work when a thunderstorm hits I’m pretty much guaranteed to find a mess when I get home. Marcie will poop and pee and claw the house apart in her panic. Fireworks are even worse. I live in a newer neighborhood so there are tons of kids, all of whom love to set off firecrackers and all sorts of whistling, sizzling, exploding things for days on end around each national holiday. Do you have any suggestions? Brenda, Concord, CT

I know first-hand what it’s like to have a dog who is terrified of both as our little Jack Russell, Bitsy, comes unglued if I don’t take proper precautions. I’m happy to share my favorite tips to help ease your pet’s anxieties with these sounds.

1. Make sure your pet has a comfortable interior room in the house in which to go. If your pet is crate trained, move the crate to this room if you suspect severe weather will hit while you are gone. A bathroom with no windows is ideal as the flashing lightning and thin sound barrier of a window can really ramp up worry. If you don’t have a windowless room available, try to find a room where you can curtain off the window completely. The goal is to reduce the appearance of flashing lightning as most dogs quickly associate those flashes with the thunder that soon follows. Keep a bright light on in the room in order to reduce the contrasts of any lighting flashes that creep in around the edges of your window covering. Make sure your pet has a comfortable bed and leave a radio or television on with music or talk that is soothing to provide an auditory distraction to the rumble outside.

2. Consider buying a compression garment, like a

ThunderShirt®, to help reduce your pet’s fear. Compression is a very soothing force; it’s why we swaddle newborn babies and is very effective at calming cattle when they are being branded or given medical treatment.

10

Living W h o l e Journal

3. Rub your pet down with an organic dryer sheet

(such as Mrs. Meyer’s lemon and verbena). Thunderstorms are electrical in nature and dogs often feel the electricity in the air long before the rain ever hits. That static can cause the skin to crawl, so reducing the static is another way to help your pet feel less troubled.

4. Make use of therapeutic grade essential oils and

flower essences. For severe panic attacks my go-to remedies are Tranquility (by Ameo, a Zija proprietary blend), Peace and Calming (by Young Living) or an ointment by Young Living called Animal Scents. Apply one of these remedies topically by placing a drop or two in your palms and briskly working your hands through your pet’s coat, especially around the ruff (hair around the neck). I use the Bach Flower Essence Rescue Remedy or Rock Rose to help with panic as well. I administer them orally by placing the drops either on my dog’s kibble or on a small cracker or piece of bread. My general recommendation for dosing is 1 drop per ten pounds, up to a maximum dose of 7 drops.

5. Don’t inadvertently compound the problem by

telling your pet not to be afraid. Owner’s often forget that every time they speak to their pet the mind automatically sends out pictures to accompany the words and there is no picture for that nasty little word “not” (or any compound of it such as “n’t”). If you say “don’t be afraid” what she hears is “be afraid” because there is no picture for the word “not.” Instead, it’s far better to tell your pet he or she is going to be fine, that you have everything set up in their safe room and have remedies ready. If you are going to be gone, be sure to mentally check in with your pet while away. Simply close your eyes, think your fur-kid’s name and picture him or her. Your baby will feel you connecting in much the same way your friend would if you dialed up her cell phone.

New for

Healing Option

Troubled Children

by Brian Eastman

M

ost troubled young people fall into one of three categories:

• A young person having difficulty who knows the trouble, can articulate it and can ask for help. • A young person having difficulty who is unable to articulate the trouble except perhaps by acting out and who may refuse help except when court-ordered or school-ordered. • A young person having difficulty who does not know there is trouble even though his/her behavior is problematic. Every troubled young person needs help now. Yes, sometimes a child can self-heal or “grow out of it.” But too often the young person grows into an adult who may or may not have developed good coping mechanisms but who still experiences internal pain, terror and damage. I work mostly with adults in my practice. As I help each client find the way to wholeness, happiness, joy, fulfillment and contentment, I often think how much better off my clients would have been if someone had cared enough - or been aware enough - to help them heal when they were young. Young people heal so much faster than do adults. The two primary healing options offered to parents are various therapies, and psychotropic drugs. Many parents dislike the outcomes of both. However, there is an alternative approach suitable for any troubled youth. Life Improving Internal Focus Technique (LIIFT), a healing process rather than a therapy, is so simple and straightforward that young clients quickly understand how the process

12

Living W h o l e Journal

works. They quickly see the changes. “Sharon,” a “court-ordered” teen, came to me after her parents had taken her to three different therapists. Sharon had quit each after one session. But, she continued walking LIIFT with me until we finished - six sessions as I recall. At one point, I asked Sharon what the difference was, why she had continued working with me and not the other therapists. “They were all talking junk and crap,” she said, “but I understand what is happening when we do LIIFT.” LIIFT uses the same processes when healing the troubledbut-unaware young person. But the healing process is enacted using a Long-Distance technique: the young person is healed without ever being aware there was work done. After a young person has been LIIFTed to a happier place, the experience of life changes for all involved. To the child, life has changed for the better and s/he is having more fun, feeling more okay and confident. To the caregiver, the child has become happier. And the caregiver, freed of much stress and worry, is now more capable of providing positive support as the young person grows into adulthood. And that’s the way it should be. About the author: Brian Eastman invested 30 years’ research to create the LIIFT healing process. He sees people privately and in group sessions. He is available to lead LIIFT training seminars and LIIFT Prosperity Workshops throughout North America. 513.541.1257. brian.eastman@LIIFT.info www.LIIFT.info (See ad page 22)

Musings of a Teacher by Edie Moore

I

recently realized I have something new to teach! This came about when I participated with a group of energy healers in a healing clinic made available to the community. While working with a client, the team of energy healers asked me to intervene as a bodyworker while they continued to work energetically. Afterward, I explained to my team the physical intervention I had made. I knew clearly that, despite their lack of bodywork training, they could have done what I had done with equal success. In that moment, I realized I had something valuable to teach others. In preparing for teaching, I have contemplated the principles and tools I employ as a bodyworker and energy healer. Each tradition has its own understandings, principles, states of mind, type of touch, etc. Each tradition has gifts to offer, especially at the interface of energy and body. But as I have become more curious about the interface of energy healing and bodywork, to my surprise and delight, I have found a reservoir of knowledge. I’ve found answers to questions I haven’t even thought to ask in the past. As long as my attention was on using my knowledge, touch, experience, and mastery of techniques to solve the problems clients brought; as long as my teaching remained within the boundaries of its own discipline; the questions didn’t exist. But by asking about bridging the disciplines of energy healing and bodywork I have found myself immersed in new questions and answers.

Each time I focus on a particular form of bodywork, its principles, its techniques, its realms of knowledge, I see how its gifts can be extracted and taught to energy healers to empower their already present knowledge and ways of healing. For example, a Reiki healer, by touching with compression or lengthening will affect how the energy moves through injured, depleted, or troubled areas creating more power and more specificity. The principle involved is that either compression or stretching will automatically create a stronger and more coherent field in the body. This intervention doesn’t require a bodyworker’s training, only an understanding of the principle and an ability to transmit it skillfully, or sometimes, embody it. Using a fulcrum, matching the tone of a muscle, following the craniosacral rhythm, emphasizing or disrupting the posture, introducing pressure in a different plane...there are countless small, easily applied interventions bodyworkers use that energy healers can use to shape the flow of energy and influence the organism’s response to it. Energy healers can also learn to effectively share their mind sets, principles and techniques with bodyworkers, like brain balancing, working with the chakras, use of guidance, etc. In learning to work with any of these concepts, one could devote a lifetime trying to master them. But blending energy healing and bodywork can be elegant and rewarding. About the author: Edie Moore has been in private practice as a bodyworker/energy healer since 1981 after becoming a massage therapist. Her focus on bridging body, mind, and spirit has been strengthened by formal training including Feldenkrais Method, Gestalt Bodywork, Zero Balancing, Trager Method, Transpersonal Psychology, Symbolization and various forms of energy healing including Reiki and shamanism. Strength in Silence by Michelle Griffith

W

e are a society of multi-tasking masters. If there is a spare minute we fill it up. Our brains are exposed to volumes of information at astounding speeds. Information overload is real. People aren’t sleeping at night. It is widely reported that one in five adults is taking some sort of prescription mental health drug. In response to these feelings of overwhelm and stress, many people are embracing spiritual practices like prayer and meditation to pause and reflect. This is a great effort, yet we fill the background space with electronic resources for inspiration, soothing playlists and meditation timers. Even with a strong spiritual practice, the time we devote to silence is minimal. Have you ever experienced a bright flash of inspiration while taking a shower? Consider the possibility that the shower may be the only place where you actually step into a place of silence and serenity. The only place you pause and not feel judged for just being still and enjoying the sound and sensations of water around you. What else is possible when we recognize the power of silence and begin to invite space into our daily lives through pause and stillness? We can learn a lot from our animal companions about the power of silence.

solving plan to respond back to you. They are just listening with an open heart and sharing the moment with you. Have you ever tried to listen to someone without responding or interrupting? It is much more difficult than you think. Try listening like a dog.

Have Boundaries Like a Cat Cats are boundary masters. They express connection with body language. Have you ever approached a cat only to have the feline turn and walk away? No lengthy explanation about how they are leaving to do something else or are late for a meeting. They silently turn and walk away. Often, cats don’t go far and look back to see of you are seeking their company for your own agenda or just to share space. The next time a person starts invading your space, consider establishing a cat-like boundary. Be beautiful, be clear and be silent.

Listen Like a Dog Dogs are expert listeners. We like to talk to our dogs because they actually hear what we say. They are not formulating an opinion, solution, or problem

and play a part in the group for their own survival. They have huge hearts and express care to each other through grooming and playfulness. If they need help they are willing to call out for it. When was the last time you trusted someone in your herd enough to call out for a little support? Make some space for silence. Feel your heartbeat and try silent listening, clear boundaries and trust. Our animal companions are happy to share! About the author: Michelle Griffith is a lifetime lover of animals. As an animal communicator she listens, learns and shares animal wisdom. Playing In the Pit

Allow the Heat to Transform You by Erin Gallagher-Urtiaga, BA, LMT, NCBTMB

W

e’re now being blessed with energies (by my experience anyway) that provide enough flexible support to be able to challenge centuries of beliefs and constructs that have kept us “safe” (and separate) so we can sink into the next Truth-layer available for mass evolution: Everything is God. Sounds like a pretty nice concept, but as you try it on, let the retorts bubble to the surface…‟but what about rape and murder, violence and war, oppression and judgment? Surely these are evil, dark, wrong and REAL!” Dearest Darling, as you feel that trigger of heat, injustice and resistance arise, engage it. Get in there, move around. What are those energies really? Don’t let your fear/discomfort turn you away, for this is the moment of introduction to trusting Self, trusting Life. By engaging these questions, you are entering into your own alchemical pit - the pit we can each learn to go to when the heat calls - to sit in that heat of alchemy until we have adjusted to, and gained resilience in, the discomfort. Because the moment that happens, the very moment we welcome it, accept it as “the way through,” it transforms and we are shown the Truth it holds within its veil. Fear is that gritty, decaying mollusk and Truth is the Pearl within. They were created that way on purpose, making fear quite possibly even more beautiful than truth itself; for it has developed the ability to hold that “unfortunate” position despite momentous projection and blame, when it is the true carrier, the Guardian of Truth! Experiencing Fear as the Guardian of Truth by sitting through the heat brings the mystical to the mundane, brings heaven “down to” Earth as an experience of knowing that anything causing heat is only an extension of God’s hand, inviting us to see more Truth, to deliver us right on through any illusion of pain/fear/separateness that exists between us and Love. Let those retorts arise. ‘This is idealistic, not at all realistic in the world we live in.” Fear can masquerade as Truth (as Self, even) and project a gazillion reasons why what I speak to is wrong, naive, or even fostering “more evil.” That is all fine and perfect, part of the process, in fact. We all have a chance to bring these fears to The Pit. And when you sit with the heat, and gain resilience in and respect for its alchemical properties of Love and Light, you not only bust through centuries of out-

16

Living W h o l e Journal

dated (but at the time helpful) constructs for yourself, such as mental distress like fear and hopelessness or physical pain and disease, but you also shift the planet through the same vibrations, into Truth. This is why “the work” is really within, but affects the Whole, if by nothing more than resonance itself. No one can do this work for you. No one can hold your hand through your experience, so I cannot speak to exactly what will transpire for you as you face those flames, but I hold space for you, by holding space for myself, to do “my work.” And I can tell you with total experiential confidence that Life will continue to get better and better as you engage your heat (God’s invitation to Truth and Love.) It is truly designed that way. As you engage your fear and do “your work,” you’ll continue to pop right on through those thick, but transparent, veils of illusion to ever-more-deeper levels of inherent interconnectedness, truth, safety, joy and love. It is high time we individually engage these hot and awesome questions as the Guardians back to Truth and Love that they are, instead of stopping right there at that edge; that edge of fear, blame, judgment and shame that has kept our world, and perhaps more importantly, our inner experience of life which creates that world, in oppression. When we stop at that edge, because our fear catches scent of open air and tells us it’s safer, nicer even, to settle into a well-worn reaction, we resist opening to our True Selves. (Our True Selves, by the way, are the microcosm of this Giant Love Game and so, are actually the “safest” places to BE.) As we master the Pit, the heat transforms to joy. The extremes balance in a way that vibrates “it all just is, and it’s all Love”…and this is mastery. This is a felt-sense of Everything Is God. About the author: Erin Gallagher-Urtiaga (BA, LMT, NCBTMB) is a truth-seer and boundary-breaker, lovingly alchemizing fear into Truth and harmonizing with all that is. A massage therapist and intuitive energyworker passionate about connecting community, she practices myofascial release and reflecting your Light to heal to Wholeness. Pain:

Blame It On the Brain

by Cynthia Allen, GCFP and Larry Wells, M.Div, MSW

ife is a process influenced by the way we think and move from cradle to grave. That may not sound revolutionary to you. But actually, it is. It is only recently that the scientific world moved beyond the concept of the brain as a relatively unchangeable entity. Previously, the brain was thought to be like a machine that when broke, could not be fixed. For a person with a brain-related challenge, surgery and pharmaceuticals were virtually the only options. The tide began to turn in the 1990s, when Nobel-winning scientist Eric Kandel discovered that learning creates new connections in the brain. Within the last twenty years, we have seen an explosion of science around the brain and meditation, movement, awareness, pain, PTSD, and disease processes such as Parkinson’s disease.

L

What is neuroplasticity? The term refers to the capacity of the brain to change in form and function. This means the actual make-up of the brain can be changed through learning. Like a piece of silly putty, that incredible grey mass in your skull can be remodeled. Since virtually anything we do was originally learned, we can unlearn it or learn it better. One can even unlearn pain.

Learning Pain We now know that pain is assigned based on past experience overlaid on top of current, real time signals being sent from an area of the body. It was previously believed that pain results from tissue trauma—bulging discs, rotator cuff tears or lack of cartilage in the knee yet studies find that nearly 50% of the people with such problems do not experience pain. Physician and author Kelly Clancy explains that many people with chronic pain are experiencing learned pain, essentially the same process that occurs with phantom limbs. Neurons that fire together and wire together with an injury can get exceptionally good at yelling “OUCH!” nearly continuously. Experiments have shown how easily the brain assigns pain or comfort. For example, mirrors were used to trick participants into thinking their own arms were being hurt, when in reality it was a rubber arm. And yes, the confused viewers experienced pain. In another interesting experiment, participants placed one swollen, arthritic hand in a shielded box. Via computer monitors they saw their fingers softly being pulled. No one actually touched their hands. As the participants watched the computer generated illusion, the pain dropped away.

Learning Comfort Neuroplasticity means you can unlearn the pain process. For chronic pain sufferers, this is fantastic news. Two “neuroplasticians” that Norman Doidge outlines in his book The Brain’s Way of Healing are chronic pain doctor

18

Living W h o l e Journal

Michael Moskowitz and somatic pioneer Moshe Feldenkrais. Moskowitz experienced relief from chronic pain by imagining the pain centers of his brain shrinking. His method has now helped many people. Moshe Feldenkrais, scientist, martial artist and founder of the Feldenkrais Method, used awareness and mind-awakening movement puzzles to overcome a debilitating knee injury. In the mid twentieth century, he discovered that people with CP, stroke, blindness AND those with everyday kinds of challenges could improve when they were effectively engaged in their own learning process. Science is catching up with what many of us knew in practice. New studies shine valuable light on the mind/body/spirit connection and create a conduit between traditional medicine and holistic practices to benefit more and more people.

3 Steps for Restoring Your Brain to Healthy Pain Signals 1. Every time you feel pain arise, immediately begin to

imagine your body flood with warm, comfortable feelings.

2. Several times a day, gently hold your thumb. As you breathe in, lightly squeeze the thumb. As you breathe out fully release the pressure. Continue for several cycles.

3. Move. Do a little, gentle movement every waking hour. It makes a difference. About the authors: Cynthia Allen and Larry Wells are partners at Future Life Now, LLC in Cincinnati. They specialize in helping neuroplasticity and move people beyond chronic pain with the painLESS program. Each is also frequent speaker at area events. Supplements Get the Best Results Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

M

any people take a handful of supplements, or maybe even a bag full of supplements, but are not getting the desired results? Americans spend billions of dollars a year (more than 30 billion actually) on vitamins and supplements each year. Are YOU getting the desired results from your supplements? Below are a few hard and fast rules to help you get the most out of your nutritional therapy:

1. Get the Bad Out

The first rule of thumb is to stop putting so many bad foods/ toxins into your body. “What are the bad foods?” you might ask. There are many studies that are controversial about diet and what foods are good and bad that it is hard for most of us to decide what is really good for us, and what does us harm. I am not going to try and convince anyone to stop eating meat, or dairy, or gluten in this short article...but I am going to tell you there are certain things that are just not good for us, period. White, processed sugar is not good - it has no nutritional benefit. Pesticides are not good - they have no nutritional benefit. If you can just start there, that will be a big first step in helping to improve your nutrition, and regulate your blood sugar to help your liver work better. Stop eating white sugar, white processed foods, and stay away from foods highly sprayed with pesticides.

2. PUT THE GOOD IN

Americans are deficient in nutrition because our food products and soil are, for the most part, poor quality. So you need to add to your diet by taking whole food nutrition supplements and minerals. Nature does not produce vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals, or any other food components in concentrated or segregated forms, but merges and blends them for the body’s needs. Synthetic vitamins and mega doses of supplements do not contribute to health; they often disrupt it. Moreover, your supplements need to be high quality. Usually, you get what you pay for. Did you know the most recent studies showed that many popular brands of supplements

20

Living W h o l e Journal

contained only 20 percent of verifiable DNA from the plants listed on the label? The retailer with the poorest showing was Walmart. Only 4 percent of the Walmart products tested showed DNA from the plants listed on the products’ labels. That means more than 95 percent of what the company claims is in the bottle, is false information. GNC, Target, and Walgreens supplements were not much better. Overall, 80 percent of the products tested were mislabeled and contaminated. New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman has filed a lawsuit against these companies stating that the mislabeling not only cheats consumers out of the substances they thought they were buying, but also exposes them to unknown ingredients that could be hazardous. “Mislabeling, contamination, and false advertising are illegal. They also pose unacceptable risks to New York families...”

3. TAKE THE SUPPLEMENTS I am astounded at how many patients complain their supplements are not working, only to find out that they are not taking the prescribed dose, or not taking them at all.

4. GIVE IT TIME It took time for those symptoms to show themselves, and it will take time for them to go away. Be patient. Consult with a healthcare provider who has been trained in nutrition and who can advise you on what is best for your particular needs. Every client is different, and each treatment/supplementation plan should be individualized. Remember, quality, balance, and function are the keys; not quantity.

Write the

Life You

Want

Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

B

utcher, baker, candlestick maker…astronaut, ballerina, nurse or school teacher - you can write the life you want to create. If you can imagine it, you can manifest it. Rockets to the moon, the cure for polio, interactive webinars and cell phones did not exist years ago. Someone had a dream and ultimately, their dream became reality. By focusing our thoughts on our choice of words, we set our intentions and begin to attract energy to the ideas to make them grow. When we say the words out loud, we give them life. When we write them down, we cement the intention into reality. You can show the world what you intend to manifest – whether it is a change in habit, invention or career goal. The written word creates a sense of permanence. You, as an individual, may not have all of the data or information in the beginning, but you can always rewrite the story by adding, deleting or modifying the chapters as you go along. Each of us have the power and resources to create the lives we want through our thoughts and words. It is up to us to write our own life stories. Make your own choices with conviction. Be happy. Follow your heart. Be adventurous. Learn and grow. Create the life of your fantasy and live it. No one else can do it for you. Realize you don’t have to know all of the details. Just believe it can happen and act as if it already has - until it does. One key, perhaps the only rule in creating this way, is not to be specific about how to create your perfect world. Getting into the details will tangle you up in minutiae, and get in the way of manifesting your dreams and desires by creating limits instead of being open to possibilities waiting around the corner you may not even know exist. Focus your writing and your talking on the outcome you want – the finished product. Pack a lot of emotion around that mental picture. Grin about it as you look at that picture in your

mind. You may not think of yourself as a writer. But how about those emails you send by the dozens or hundreds every day? That is writing, and you’re shooting your thoughts and emotions out into the universe every time you hit that send button. The notes you put in the kids’ lunches, the texts you send every day to your daughter in college. All that writing is carrying your emotions and your future along with it. So, mind your message. If you are looking to buy a house, don’t say you are expecting a high interest rate on the mortgage loan, and that you just know they’re going to want 15% or 20% down, and that the price will be more than you want to pay. Stay out of the details, and instead just bask in how you are going to feel walking in the front door when that dream house is finally yours. Those feelings, that expectation, that energy will really get the Universe moving to deliver you right to that great home!

In addition, Sage serves others as a Spiritual Life Coach, leading a variety of workshops focused on personal empowerment. Currently, Sage co-facilitates the Shamanic Priestess Process in Cincinnati with Ananda Thunder Wolf. Together, they will be facilitating the Process for Austin in 2016. Sage is working remotely by offering personal intuitive phone readings. She says, “My joy is to use my gifts to help others discover theirs.” She can be reached at sagewomen61@gmail.com or 513.490.4693. www.connectingwiththegoddesswithin.com Ron Esposito will present a Singing Bowls Sound Meditation at Stillpoint Center For Healing Arts on Saturday, July 25, 7-8:15p.m., $15. The meditation features nine quartz crystal and four Tibetan singing bowls. The singing bowls produce long resonant tones that shift in a cloud-like manner. The sound of the bowls focuses the mind and enables the meditator to be present in the moment practicing bare attention to “what is.” Sound meditation is a form of nada yoga, using vibration as a transformative practice. Participants are invited to bring a zafu/cushion if they have one. Ron will give a 15 minute introductory talk and the meditation will follow. CDs will be available. Stillpoint Center For Healing Arts is located at 11223 Cornell Park Drive, Blue Ash, OH 45242. www.StillpointTherapy.com www.ronesposito.com Next Deadline AUG 1: Submit 100 words, press-release style, with .jpg photo to info@wholelivingjournal.com.

recipe for healing. Thriver Soup is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to optimize their potential for a return to wellness. Heidi leaves no stone unturned. From practical tips involving insurance and legal matters, to broader suggestions of opening yourself up to the joy of new experiences and incorporating healing modalities such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Heidi offers a comprehensive view of how to release fear and begin to thrive. By courageously eliminating old, constricting paradigms and replacing them with new, vibrant thought patterns and practices, Heidi successfully shifted the energy of her life, and thus the energy of her body. Each piece of advice and personal awakening is highlighted as a metaphorical ingredient that Heidi offers to you as stock to create your own thriver’s feast. Just like a warm bowl of your favorite soup provides comfort on multiple levels, Heidi Bright caters a sense of relief and support to her reader. I highly recommend Thriver Soup to anyone who is stepping into, or helping to carry someone through, a cancerto-wellness journey. www.heidibright.com/thriver-soup

The

Sweet Sound of Spirit by Jen Flick

I

just traveled around the world in less than 3 months. Miraculously, I didn’t need a plane or a boat to do it. All that was required was a leap of faith. Not too long ago, I was propositioned to begin a blog and my initial reaction was to run away from it as quickly as possible. Fear can do that to me. Instead of encouraging me to embrace the glowing light of possibility, I find my thoughts more often attempt to squelch my inner flame. Because our fear is rooted in ego which is encoded to hold us back, its voice shows up in phrases like: “Who am I to write a blog? What if I’m not good enough? Who in the world will ever want to read what I have to say?” When presented with the blog proposal, my fear switch was activated and these age-old chants kicked into gear, regardless of the fact I had dreamed of being a writer for most of my life.

Send Those Thoughts to the Time-Out Chair! It has taken a lot of practice and quite a bit of mindfulness to learn how to hold these menacing mantras at bay. Nowadays, I enlist the aid of my proverbial time-out chair. This metaphorical piece of furniture serves as a resting place for the fearful, constricting thoughts, and offers me the time to consult my higher self through Spirit. For me the term Spirit is multi-dimensional. It is God, my guardian angel and guides, or a loved one who has crossed over. It certainly includes my intuition, and it can be all of these collectively. Aware that fear was fueling my initial response to the blog proposition, I took action to switch gears. After dumping my doubts into the time-out chair, I intentionally called in Spirit. Sitting in meditation I asked, “Can I really do this?” to which I heard an immensely loving response, “Yes, of course you can.” My next question, “Do I really want to do this?” received the gentle reply, “That’s a good question, and its yours to answer. Do you really want to do this? Free will, Dear One, free will.” I wasn’t prepared for that answer, so I revisited my first question. “Seriously, can I really do this?” and the soothing, sweet voice

whispered, “Yes you can,” followed encouragingly by, “Just be brave enough.”

Ego Speaks in First Person, Spirit Speaks in Second There was my answer. I had received my guidance. How did I know for sure? The key was within the sound of the voice. You see, egoic fear speaks in an accusatory, undermining tone, and will most often be heard in the first person. “Who am I to write a blog? Who will ever read what I have to say?” Spirit, on the other hand, communicates in a comforting, assuring voice, and will nearly always be heard in the second person. “Yes, of course you can. Just be brave enough.”

Just Be Brave Enough I chose to trust the voice of Spirit and I began my blog. Within a few short months, I had taken a virtual tour around the world courtesy of Spirit’s wings. My site traveled across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and landed on four continents by the time my fifth entry posted! It turns out I could write a blog, and there were people in the world eager to read it. Spirit will always lead us to our highest and greatest good. When we firmly banish our fears to the time-out chair and seek Spirit’s guidance, magic occurs. From this space, and aligned with this Force, absolutely anything becomes possible!

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
