Letter from the Editor

Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

A Life Reset love this time of year. When the calendar turns, it᾿s like a fresh start, a reset. A time to reflect and consider how life could be different, better. I love making resolutions, it᾿s become a deep practice for me. Knowing that whatever I want to create, the power of my intention is what will manifest it into reality. Therefore, it᾿s important for me to become clear on what exactly I want to create. Intention is a powerful word, in fact, I like its gentle nature juxtaposed to the more rigid yet similar word ‟resolution.” However, resolution implies absolute resolve in bringing about one᾿s intention and I like the spunk of that idea best. One of the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success according to author Deepak Chopra, M.D. is The Law of Intention and Desire. He states, ‟Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment . . . intention and desire in the field of pure potentiality have infinite organizing power. And when we introduce an intention in the fertile ground of pure potentiality, we put this infinite organizing power to work for us.” How cool is that?! Basically, within the very DNA of any desire is everything, everything, that is needed for it to become reality. Every intention, or resolution, contains the actual mechanics for its fulfillment. That means if we keep our focus on the what, the how will take care of itself. But how do we activate this law? Is having desire enough alone to get the job done? The following information is from the Chopra Center website at www.chopra.com.

I

I will put the Law of Intention and Desire into effect by making a commitment to take the following steps: I will make a list of all my desires. I will carry this list with me wherever I go. I will look at this list before I go into my silence and meditation. I will look at it before I go to sleep at night. I will look at it when I wake up in the morning.

1

I will release this list of my desires and surrender it to the womb of creation, trusting that when things don’t seem to go my way, there is a reason, and that the cosmic plan has designs for me much grander than even those I have conceived. (Like the prayer, ‟This or something better.”)

2

I will remind myself to practice present-moment awareness in all my actions. I will refuse to allow obstacles to consume and dissipate the quality of my attention in the present moment. I will accept the present as it is, and manifest the future through my deepest, most cherished intentions and desires.

3

So basically the action steps are: make a list (and make sure it᾿s a good one cuz you᾿re gonna be carrying this puppy everywhere), surrender the specifics into the womb of creation (where things could get a little hairy and might not turn out the way you want, but you gotta have faith and remember sometimes God᾿s greatest gift is unanswered prayers), and finally, stay present, creating the future from your most burning desires and passions (which can only ever exist in the present moment because otherwise they᾿re not living, breathing passions, but rather stale thoughts of the mind addicted to the past.) Easy enough, right? Make a list, let it go, and instead of analyzing it with your mind, feel the energy of your list in the present. Sounds like a good plan to me, but here᾿s the kicker. The contents of the list must be those things you truly want to manifest in the future. Often, buried deep in our psyches, exist conflicting desires. We are intricate beings, as multi-faceted as gorgeous diamonds. This means it᾿s not unusual to have many different voices inside our own heads arguing for different outcomes. For example, maybe we want to become healthier and feel ‟resolved” to eating better and exercising more, but unbeknownst to us, there᾿s also a competing desire within for more rest. So the subconscious dialogue goes something like, ‟I᾿m definitely committed to exercising more...but, only if I can find a way to work it into my day because, you know, I don᾿t need one more thing to do on my plate, and I᾿m certainly not going to get up earlier because I᾿m exhausted as it is, plus, I᾿m not a morning person anyway.” Author and spiritual teacher Caroline Myss calls it ‟negotiating with God.” In other words, ‟Please please make me healthy, but don᾿t ask me to do anything I don᾿t want to do.” There are actually many juicy layers here where this principle can apply to all areas of life, but I᾿ll let those lessons organically unfold. For now, it᾿s enough to realize the light blasting potential of becoming aware of how we negotiate with ourselves. Once we have those conflicting conversations out in front of us and we are brutally honest with ourselves about our boundaries when it comes to change, what we are willing to do/feel and what we aren᾿t willing to do/feel, then we can begin to formulate a list that truly reflects our deepest desires... and the rest will take care of itself. This issue of WLJ is teeming with support and inspiration for manifesting your intentions in 2015. If some of your resolutions are for your business, consider allowing our team to help. A consultation session comes free with every ad to ensure your ad reflects what you want to attract. Wizard School is an awesome way to start the year with serious intentions. And, I᾿ve recently started accepting new life coaching clients if you᾿d like to work in-depth one on one. It᾿s gonna be a great year! Happy New Year,

NEXT MEETINGS: JAN 13 & FEB 10 If you haven᾿t been to an Infusion Cincinnati meeting yet, we invite you to put it at the top of your New Year᾿s resolution list. Infusion is like no other group in the city. Infusion is fresh, Infusion is YOU. Each meeting offers amazing music and a speaker to kick off the discussion, but then the mic is open and everyone has an opportunity to share what they think about the topic, or what makes them light up inside. What are your passions? What᾿s on your heart? We want to know. Don᾿t want to talk? That᾿s okay, come listen and be inspired. In December, Star Staubach led the discussion and created ‟M.A.G.I.C” for the group. By the end, the group was beating like one heart, as the subject of mindfulness charged the atmosphere and stopped being a topic of discussion and instead was reality. David Kisor left everyone cheering on their feet and begging for more after his powerful and playful musical performance which was described by one person as ‟art in motion.” Every Infusion meeting is donation basis and includes music, talk and community discussion about living with passion and purpose. 2nd Tuesdays 6:30-8pm at Rohs Street Cafe, 245 W. McMillan St, 45219. Please leave extra time for parking, and plan to stay after for coffee and conversation. Enjoy reading Whole Living Journal? You᾿ll LOVE Infusion! Become a

Deliberate Creator by Judi A. Winall, M.Div.

W

e are constantly creating our lives…sometimes deliberately, but usually by default. Deliberate creating is not something most of us were taught. Some of us may just now be on the journey of discovering how to do this. Choosing to be a deliberate creator is the first step and usually occurs after we’ve become aware that life is not manifesting as we wish and recognize we are the only ones who can change it. This choice dramatically changes our lives! As we begin to inner reflect about life not meeting our expectations, we begin asking ‘why?’ Our thoughts, feelings and beliefs hold the key to the ‘why,’ for they lay the foundational blueprint of our lives. What we hold within our consciousness is constantly being mirrored in the world around us. As we change the perspectives and beliefs we currently hold to ones more conducive to what we truly desire, the laws of the universe support this intention by attracting more of what we focus upon. Like attracts like… so whatever we give our attention to will grow in our lives like a plant given sunshine, water and nourishment. Creating deliberately means creating intentionally. We must be clear about what we want in order to direct our

of Your Life

thoughts and perceptions accordingly. This is why it’s essential for us to be aware of what we are thinking, feeling and believing, so we can discern if the current orientation brings us into alignment with what we wish to create. Our emotions are the result of our thoughts and beliefs, not the other way around. As we become more finely attuned to how we feel, we gain deeper insights into the blueprints we are creating. This understanding is an integral part of becoming a deliberate creator, for as we change our thoughts and beliefs, we change our blueprints. We are each sovereign beings, meaning we are self-governing. We have the right, the ability and the authority to change any thought, any feeling and any belief anytime we want. Most of us have just forgotten how. A simple yet powerful process given to me by Source for assisting individuals with soul empowerment is awareness, discernment and action. First, becoming aware we’re dissatisfied with life and recognizing we’re not deliberately creating leads us to a desire for change. Next, identifying the thoughts and beliefs, as well as the feelings which are influencing our life unfavorably, is discernment. The last step is action, where we begin

January-February 2015

changing the undesirable thoughts and beliefs into ones that bring us into harmony and resonance with our soul’s intention. It’s simple in its essence yet involved in its application and integration. For those wishing to step more fully into becoming a deliberate creator, a five week course on Exploring Life Mastery will begin on January 22, 2015. See the ad on this page or visit www.SoulEmpowerment.com for more information. We are each magnificent creators, individualized expressions of Source and life is supposed to be good… as well as expansive. Consider the possibility that you can create the life and health you desire. Well-being is our divine blueprint, if we allow it. The choice is always ours. About the author: Judi A. Be an

Eco-Warrior

Just Like Grandma by Joseph Snider

y grandmother was born in 1903 and watched the world change in the course of her 99 years from horse and buggy transportation to interconnected global communication systems that she could barely comprehend. She also lived the most sustainable lifestyle of just about anybody I have ever known.

M

An Eco-Warrior Out of Necessity

Generation after generation before us practiced what we are all now preaching, not because of the altruistic motives that light the torches we carry, but out of pure necessity in a world where the abundance we so commonly take for granted was not the norm. Living through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and residing in the Midwest helped to cultivate my grandmother into this eco-warrior who was ahead of her time and a constant reminder to me that we are not reinventing the wheel when it comes to sustainability. She did not have air-conditioning even well into her 90’s, so out of necessity, she developed a keen awareness of how to maintain comfort. She had awnings that went down in the summer and up in the winter to block or harness solar energy as needed. She knew which windows to open at what times of day, and exactly where to position fans to create optimal crossbreezes. Crafts with the grandkids involved items from her daily household use: milk cartons, scrap paper, and egg cartons, etc. When she would mail a letter, she made the envelope from scrap paper. At 98 years old, her recycling bin overflowed every week, while municipalities throughout the country were trying to educate and motivate people half her age to participate in recycling programs.

‟She had practically zero carbon footprint.”

She had practically zero carbon footprint from transportation. In her 99 years, and the last 45 living alone, she never drove a

car. She lived in a small town and walked to church and to the grocery store. In her later years, when walking was difficult, she carpooled. If she wanted to go into the city, she took the bus. Many green “to do” lists will suggest turning the shower off while soaping up and then back on to rinse. My grandmother is the only person I have ever known to remain fully committed to this practice (even in winter)... and who demanded it of her visiting grandchildren. • She maintained a full garden of vegetables that provided her food. • She hung her clothes to dry out on the clothes line. • She took all of her compost scraps down to a pile in the woods…I could go on.

‟She was the most content person I᾿ve ever known.” In short, she was a walking laundry list of green practices since 1920, long before any of us patted ourselves on the back for promoting new and innovative ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. What is even more noteworthy though is that I don’t believe that my grandmother ever once felt as though she was missing anything in her life. She was the most content person I have ever known, and her lifestyle was just simply who she was. Scattered throughout our past, there are countless examples of how to do more with less, and perhaps more importantly, how to be content doing it.

Addicted to Stress? by Star Staubach

n college, I was that student who would send my twenty-page paper to the printer only 15 minutes before the class it was due. My roommate called me the Master Procrastinator. Do you find yourself doing this same thing, waiting until the very last minute to turn in proposals at work, or always waiting until the deadline for any number of activities? Do you find that you are ultra-productive in other areas of your life unrelated to the deadline when you are under time pressure? It’s common to be stressed to the max and suddenly multi-tasking and getting things done with superhuman speed. Although there may be many contributing factors, there is one recurring theme, stress can actually help us complete tasks. What is happening here? Are we really addicted to stress? Our brains have become conditioned to expect stress in order to be able to perform, produce, and focus what is needed to complete the task at hand. But stress isn’t fun, why would we need stress to perform? The answer lies in our ancestry. When our ancestors were living among dangerous predators, they had to be able to think on their feet, react quickly and hyper focus to avoid being eaten. When stressed, the amygdala in the brain is triggered. Once stress is sensed, the body reacts with a “flight or flight” response, releasing epinephrine (adrenaline) in the brain. The epinephrine flows into the blood stream, causing an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, muscle strength and sugar metabolism, preparing the body for the strenuous task of avoiding the stressor, which is perceived to be “danger.” Thus, we are physically equipped to produce more and faster when the stress response is triggered. At this time of year, many of us review what is working in our lives, what is not, and we resolve to use the new year as a fresh start. So how does all of this information regarding the body’s stress response relate to completing our goals in 2015? Change, even positive change required for establishing new healthy habits, always creates a certain level of stress, which also triggers the release of adrenaline from the “fight or flight” response. This is interpreted by the body as that we’re in danger, and since there is no external deadline or motivation to push through the stress, often we do not wish to continue experiencing the negative feelings stress causes and we unconsciously sabotage the new behaviors (the ones we’re working hard to adopt as new habits). How do we ever get around all of this neuroscience and unconscious sabotaging if we’re designed to react this way?

I

10

Living W h o l e Journal

Great questions! And there’s good news. Studies have shown that the brain can be retrained. There are ways to get the benefits of the stress of a deadline without waiting until the last minute. With practice, your brain can become your ally and support your resolutions.

3 Ways to Retrain Your Brain: 1. Remind yourself that the “stress” you are experiencing is not related to being in physical danger. Instead, it can be perceived by the mind that this “danger” of your proposal being due, or creating a new workout routine, is one you can overcome with support and practice.

2. Create healthy release of adrenaline by elevating the heart rate. Research by Dr. John Ratey has indicated that continued elevated heart rate can create the same positive adrenaline rush that stress provides, supporting you to hyperfocus on accomplishing tasks. His study showed that students who ran for 30 minutes before attending their toughest classes, reported dramatically increased test scores. He goes on to state that we can achieve this through regular participation in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise or healthy intercourse. 3. Gradually work toward your new goal. The idea is to break the goal into such simple steps that they become almost mindless, happening without much thought. When adopting new habits, you are changing the neural pathways in the brain. Changing these pathways takes time. If creating a new habit takes too much brain power, you are less likely to follow through. Taking baby steps toward the goal, although it may feel counter-intuitive, will actually lead to greater success. Choose

HAPPY

Quickly

3 Helpful Questions by Rev. Liz Loring and Rev. Gary Pennington aking decisions can be difficult. Most of us would like a fast, practical way to make clear happy choices in our lives, especially in situations that seem complicated because of old emotional ties, duties and obligations. Often we are in servitude to some now outdated way of thinking or living.

M

Liz: When I experience mind-chatter around decisions I have to make, it can all become so convoluted. This had been a common pattern in my life, and so I began to pray for a simpler way. I turned on the radio one morning to listen to the weather, and heard a spiritual teacher’s testimony about applying three questions before making decisions.

1. Am I growing? Ask the question, “Am I growing in this work, in this health practice, in this relationship, in this place, or in this activity?” 2. Am I contributing? Ask the question, “Am I contributing in this situation? Am I sharing my gifts in a way that benefits me, the situation or others?” 3. Am I having fun? Examine your feelings and ask, “Do I find enjoyment, passion, and delight in this activity? Do I have a feeling of genuine accomplishment and positive expectation?”

Gary: Recently, Liz and I were confronted with the need to make a decision together having to do with feeling overwhelmed in one of our activities. We applied the three questions, and received an immediate answer. We asked if we were growing, and our answer was, yes. Next, we asked if we were contributing, and again the answer was, yes, we were contributing a great deal. Finally, we asked if we were having fun, and the answer that came immediately was, NO! We then asked the question “Is there something we can do to make this fun again?” Liz: I was amazed and grateful at the ease with which we identified the important area that needed to be addressed. This process allowed us to continue our conversation about what we could do or change in order to have more fun in this situation. We were able to make a simple change in our time commitment, and as a result, we are having more fun. Liz & Gary: When we have the need to “Choose Happy… Quickly,” we ask the three “Choose Happy” questions, identify the “no” response as the problem, and then meditate and pray about the choices we are about to make. We get great intuitive help as we open our mind and heart to receive guidance. The last comment is just our personal suggestion. After answering these three direct questions, we know where we stand and whether or not some change is warranted. We may make changes in our process or attitude, and that does not mean that we make thoughtless choices and throw the baby out with the bathwater. We briefly deliberate, and then make fast, happy choices, choices that used to take much more time and involve some measure of uncertainty and struggle.

Confessions of a

Mirror Hater

WLJ Sutriasa, AD v5 LCSW by Shakti

January/February 2015 issue

For half of my life I was overweight and avoided mirrors for obvious reasons. I didn’t want to look at myself. The mirror was much like the scale, a dreaded enemy to avoid at all costs. I healed myself of being an emotional eater and no longer suffer from 1/2 this page addiction I still7.25w never relished fullbut color: x 4.75hthe mirror. Maybe it was my Puritan upbringing, or maybe I still somewhere felt embarrassed, like what I saw just wasn’t good enough. AnyinProblems file please callcertification workThen 2011, I did with a happiness coaching dp Design, Diana Puppin shop with Robert Holden. On our first afternoon, we were handed mirrors and asked to pair up. We were then instructed to look 513.389.1335 in the mirror and say (out loud) what we saw. I took a deep breath and looked at myself. What I saw were sad blue eyes staring back at me. I began. “I see my eyes, and all these lines and creases. Wow, I have so many wrinkles.” Before I knew it tears started to well up and I watched the whites of my eyes get shot through with red. I went to speak again when I heard a voice in my head. “Look at yourself as if through the eyes of your husband, through the eyes of

love.” And suddenly the picture shifted. I saw a kind hearted, caring human being. A woman who is compassionate, is a good friend and a devoted parent. A woman who is so loved by her family and by God. Through my tears I saw this. This experience changed me. I realized that even though I’d shed all those pounds decades ago, I still didn’t feel beautiful, loved or whole. The exercise inspired me to do mirror work regularly as part of my morning prayers and meditation. I now talk to myself, “I love you Shakti. I really, really, love you.” The cool part is, I actually believe it! Life really is all about perspective, and in that moment I shifted from seeing myself as not enough to seeing myself as a child of God, beautiful, healed and loved. Stop Complaining, It᾿s Boring by Jennifer Schuitemaker

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

D

earest Magnificent Ones, So you want to be significant to the world, huh? Make a difference? Help people? Change lives? Well, then, how about getting over yourself first. Stop spreading your “I’m so scared, I’m not enough, Who do I think I am? I can’t do it” all over town. Okay, so you’re scared. You think you’ve made mistakes, or think you’ll never amount to anything. You can’t trust anybody, you don’t feel well, or maybe you even feel like your whole world is falling apart. Boring. Next! This is so Made in China and I found it at Wal-Mart. Have we become over-analytical to the point we can’t move on? We focus on limitations rather than focusing on the unlimited possibilities that lie beyond those so-called ‟conditions.” Our self-imposed limitations keep us safe and stuck in the same environment day after day. We basically hide under these story lines so that we don’t have to face the life that has been waiting for us all along. Does naming and identifying these labels help our progression or hinder it? Well, spending time on all the ailments that are wrong with us will surely produce results. Spending time focused on what we really want will as well. Don’t spend so much time dealing with what’s wrong that you risk losing momentum in moving forward. Like when you’re in class and the teacher spends most of the time on the student who is disrupting, whining, and complaining, rather than on all the rest who came rested, prepared, and ready to learn. What good is that for everyone’s progress? Why do you think your whining should be indulged? Your faults and complaints are as boring as mine. Blah. Blah. Blah. If you only knew how well you are, it would scare the wellness right out of you. The more we wallow, blame the past, and identify with all these labels, the more we become victims to them. We allow them to paralyze us into never moving past our possibility ceiling, the ceiling we have created to keep us safe, and accepted by our tribe, in other words, stuck. It becomes a convenient excuse for us to be incapable of moving along. Furthermore, to cement the deal, we identify with the limitations as who we are. It becomes our story. The one we keep telling ourselves and others. But, who would we be without it? It’s like the person who introduces himself or herself as the Director of Marketing at Company X. That’s not who he or she is. That’s what they do when they are at work. Who will they be if or when they lose that job? The same applies to you. Who will you be if you lose that

ailment you’re always complaining about? If you’re healed into wholeness and functionality? It will mean letting go. You will have to say goodbye to an identity that you have invested in for as long as you can remember. This work is not easy, but it is necessary. Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, and The Buddha had loads of things to complain about. They had certain physical ailments of their own coupled with the social barbarism around them and countless uncooperative, negative people. Yet, if that was their focus, they wouldn’t have progressed very far. If you get upset at these words then, by all means, keep complaining. Perhaps people like me are the reason the world is the way it is. Or, you could see it another way. Start by replacing your words with these thoughts, “The world is the way it is because of the way I see it. It starts with me. Since it starts with me, I have a chance of changing the world I see. That is the miracle. Yet, if I am victim to the world I see, then there is no chance of me being able to change it. I am victim to an outside force that I cannot name or even know.” It’s either one or the other. You can’t be a half-victim, just like a woman can’t be half-pregnant. You have to choose. Why not choose now? You are made of God-stuff. This is not something you have to believe this is what you are. You are made of the same stuff that launches us into orbit around the sun. It is the same Force Of Life that is busy expanding the universe as well as expanding your heart. You and I are part and parcel of this Force. Once you realize there is nothing to fix, that you were never broken, then maybe you will surmise that all those insecurities and fears were just a convenient way of holding yourself back. You are here to expand, thrive and to share your gifts with the world. This can only happen when you decide you’re worth it. Stop complaining and start moving into the direction of your dreams. Watch your life unfold in unapologetic splendor.

5 Quick Tips

for

Manifesting by Susan Scotts

W

hen we go into a restaurant and give our order, we know with certainty that what we order will be brought as soon as it is ready. That’s exactly how manifestation works: you put in your order and have confidence in knowing that your order will come to you as soon as it’s ready.

Here are some quick and easy steps for manifesting with positive affirmations:

1.

SET your intentions (in writing), VISUALIZE WITH EMOTION, prioritize and take ACTION.

Visualize a clear picture of what your heart desires in your life (think big!) Make a handwritten list, with clear and specific defined goals, objectives and timeframes. Now prioritize and transfer those actions to a specific day in the week, and get started in creating the future you really want. AFFIRM: “I set my goals and intentions in writing and take action. I visualize their success with a feeling of gratitude for having achieved them. I am having a fabulous day today and accomplish all I desire.”

2. Knowing the HOW is NOT important. You do need to know “what” you want, and “why” you want it. This is important for identifying and creating the abundance you desire. But you don’t need to know “how” you are going to achieve it. AFFIRM: “I release all limiting thoughts so abundance is mine! I hear the ideas and inspiration.”

3.

Make the DECISION to succeed.

Make the decision that you are good enough and that you want to be successful to consciously create the life you’ve always dreamed of. Consciously and subconsciously deciding to allow abundance into your life, coupled with the emotional feeling of gratitude that it has been fulfilled, is transformational and the Universe has no choice but to respond, provide the answers you are seeking and grant your requests. AFFIRM: “I am grateful that I am so successful!” (Really feel it!)

4.

VISUALIZE yourself succeeding.

Visualizing your success uses the power of your subconscious to create an internal image and help bring it to manifest in the physical world using your positive emotions. Remember, the mind cannot distinguish between what is real and what you are dreaming of when positive feeling and emotion are part of the equation. To activate the Law of Attraction, visualize with emotion the future you desire in the tense that it has already been achieved and what you desire will easily manifest. When you dream with action and excitement you defy fear and it becomes reality. You create your own reality, why not let it be great? AFFIRM: “I allow abundance and prosperity to come, my supply is unlimited.”

5. FOCUS on what you desire and be FLEXIBLE. Have you ever noticed you usually get what you focus on? Worry never produced a positive result. Focus on what you do want instead of what you don’t want. AFFIRM: “I focus on success and am flexible in accepting the ‘gentle redirects’ that life gives to create even better possibilities for me!” About the author: Susan Scotts believes everyone has a right to manifest magnificence, and uses her unique blend of spirituality with the targeted power of energy to help clients design their dream lives, and help them foster a new way of enlightened thinking through the Principles of Abundance & Conscious Manifestor APP. nutrition and recipes from the kitchen of

The Healthy Foodies by Pama Mitchell and Mary Ann Barnes, MD

Cold Nights, WArm Stew Nothing says hearth and home quite like a big pot of homemade soup or stew, and many of us probably have childhood memories of favorite suppers that revolved around steaming bowls of comfort. In Pama’s family, mom would transform the bone of a Christmas ham into white-bean soup, dotted with slices of carrots and celery. Dad’s specialty was oyster stew, creamy with whole milk and dotted with pats of butter. It’s a perfect warm-up on a winter’s night, even if you feel the need to lighten it up with low-fat milk and trans fat-free margarine. We’ve done a little research about oysters, about which there’s good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad:

an alarmingly high percentage of the world’s oyster reefs have been decimated by a confluence of forces, from man-made to natural. One source reports that more than 85 percent of wild oyster habitats no longer can sustain these shellfish. On the positive side, though, farmed oysters are “one of the most sustainable seafood options,” according to Rodale News health writer Emily Main. And that’s not all the good news about oysters. Turns out they have more of the mineral zinc per serving than any other food source. Maybe that’s why some say they’re an aphrodisiac—because zinc deficiency and male impotence are related, and too little zinc in our cells can lead to

low libido in both men and women. Zinc also helps regulate our immune functions, plays a role in preventing many cancers, and helps ward off age-related macular degeneration. Many of us have found zinc lozenges useful in reducing the length and severity of a cold. In addition to delicious oysters, other good sources of zinc include wheat germ, dark chocolate, other shellfish such as crab and lobster, and most red meats. This recipe follows Dad’s pretty closely, but see step 1 for ideas about how to increase the veggie proportion in the stew. More veggies is always a good idea!

Oyster Stew (Makes 4 Large Servings) Ingredients: 2 T canola, peanut or olive oil

Dash of nutmeg

1 leek, trimmed, washed and thinly sliced

Salt and freshly ground

1 large shallot, minced

Garnishes:

1/2 gallon (two quarts) milk

a dab of butter

1 pint shucked oysters, with their liquid

a dash of sherry

black or white pepper, to taste

oyster crackers at table

Instructions: Heat oil over medium heat in a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Add leek and shallot and stir-fry until the veggies soften. (Other aromatic veggies can be added here, such as finely diced carrots, celery and/or onion, but leek and shallot are just about perfect.) Add milk a cup at a time, stirring. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Keep an eye on the pot to make sure the milk doesn’t scorch. When the milk mixture gets hot -- just below a boil -- add the oysters and their liquor. Pick through the oysters first to

16

make sure there are no pieces of shell. Stir well, cover again and let cook until the oysters start to curl around the edges. Add seasonings, and then make sure the stew is as hot as you like it. (Again, be careful not to let the bottom of the pan scorch -- use a heavy bottomed pan if you have one to make this easier.) Optional, add sherry and butter, then ladle into bowls. Pass the oyster crackers. Listen to the room go quiet while everyone slurps away...

Do You See What

I See?

by Nicole Amber

e have been sold on the belief that as we age, our health gradually deteriorates. Our eyesight is thought to be the first thing that goes and there’s little we can do about it other than resign ourselves to wearing glasses. Not necessarily true. I believed this too until one day when everything changed. Years ago, during a stressful period in my life, my eyesight became clouded. At certain times, I would tear up and it felt like I had cotton balls floating in front of my eyes. A family member who noticed my constant squinting urged me to have my eyes checked. The diagnosis? Mildly short-sighted (difficulty seeing far). I was upset but did what we all do in this situation: I purchased a pair of (designer) glasses. These were so-called “distance” glasses, so I wore them only for driving and when it was necessary to see great distances. Over time, I noticed that the more I wore my glasses, the more dependent I became on them, which deepened my feelings of incapacitation. I wore the glasses for over a year. Then, I had an altercation with my friend, Raoul, one of the gentlest souls I have ever known. He was wise before his time - a real ‘spiritualist’ in my eyes. I was preparing to drive Raoul home and I put on my glasses as usual. Raoul suddenly freaked out. He began yelling at me and cursing the glasses for what they represented to him. It was as if the glasses were an evil fiend from which I needed saving. Raoul threatened me: “Take off those glasses or I’ll get out of the car,” he said. I was shocked. I didn't know how to respond so I said nothing. Fearing that without my glasses, I might miss an exit and be unable to read road signs, I kept my glasses on. “If you truly believe you need glasses,” Raoul continued, “then you know and understand nothing about who you are. Now, take off those glasses, choose to know that you see, and do this for thirty days.” Was he for real? I refused to take the glasses off and guess what? Raoul asked me to stop the car... and then he got out, and I went back home. However, Raoul’s words made an impact on me...what if he was right? I decided to give it a try. At first, I wanted to please him but this morphed into a desire to prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to. I never liked wearing distance glasses and wanted to get rid of them, expunging the visual-deficit label from my driver’s license (a label that haunted me, actually). That day I made a decision to live “sans glasses” for thirty days. I still drove but only chose routes I knew well. Road signs were a blur but I told myself that I could read them

W

18

Living W h o l e Journal

clearly. “Who are you kidding?” I asked myself from time to time. But I persisted. The most amazing part of this narrative occurred at the end of the thirty days. To my complete surprise, my eyesight improved to the point where I no longer needed to wear my glasses. Raoul had been right! What exactly happened here? What caused this outcome? Permit me to postulate. The way I understand it is that we hold many erroneous beliefs about ourselves and our apparent reality. What occurred with my eyesight might seem nothing less than miraculous, but when I began to see that I have the power to choose what beliefs to hold on to and which ones to release, I realized that this miracle was conceived through the power of my thoughts and efforts. I am not suggesting that other available tools not be utilized. I am only proposing that in addition to external tools, we also use the power of our inner voice to bring about our well-being. If your visual acuity is less than perfect and you wear glasses for distance or for reading, you may want to try a similar experiment to mine. Be discerning about how you choose to engage. Your well-being and safety are a priority. If driving is too risky, try something else. You can watch your favorite movie, or read a book that you have read numerous times. Changing our condition by shifting our beliefs can come about, but it depends on the level of our desire to make it happen. A thirty-day investment in yourself can completely transform the way you see and experience your life. Many worthy initiatives can take a lifetime to achieve, but you can give yourself this chance to create your own miracles in a fraction of that time. You have nothing to lose and possibly everything to gain. About the author: Nicole Amber is a creative

From

Fibromyalgia

Despair to

110% Recovered by Leah E. McCullough was crying so hard I was shaking the bed. It was shaking so much it started to make me sea sick. Since I wasn’t finished crying yet, I moved to the floor to continue. That’s when my husband came home after working his second job. Seeing the pain in my husband’s eyes, seeing myself through his eyes, even though I didn’t think it was possible, I felt even worse. Would this nightmare ever end? I was very sick with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, but also a whole host of other illnesses including major depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, IBS, PTSD, migraines, infertility with horrible periods, and morbid obesity. I was in constant pain that was barely alleviated by narcotic prescription drugs. I had lost my job, most of my friends and my relationships with my family were severely stressed. There did not seem to be an end in sight. Fortunately in my not-so-dark moments I had started to do some key things that I believe eventually got me out of that hell hole. I had started

I

praying for healing, visualizing optimal health and meditating daily. I had started actively changing my thoughts to a positive mindset, even though there seemed to be no hope. Within a month of this practice I began having dreams that I was back at work, and this was after over six years of being almost completely bedridden! Ninety days later I met a holistic therapist who helped me. Three months after that, I felt so much better I thought I was cured. (I wasn’t, I still had a long way to go, but that’s how much better I felt.) Within nine months I was able to lose over seventy pounds, stop taking all the prescription medication, travel, and even start my own business. Then I got the biggest news of my life: after eight years of marriage I was surprisingly pregnant. Nine months later I gave birth to my miracle baby. Within a year of beginning to develop my thoughts, every aspect of my life changed for the better. About two years ago I was inspired to write a book about my experiences.

I did not know how to write a book and I certainly did not know how to get the written book into the hands of the people who needed it. I just stepped out in faith and I am completely amazed how all of this has come together in such an elegant way. I know it is from divine grace. and other digestive invaders - thus I promote the proliferation of healthy gut bacteria and improve immune system function. I am both an herb, and a spice. Most people either love me or hate me. My seeds are used in curries, curry powder, pickles, sausages, soups, stews, and ratatouille. The essential oil is used in various herbal remedies and dietary supplements, and to flavor gin, vermouth, liqueurs, tobacco and perfume. I am a member of the carrot family. My leaves are widely used in Mexican and Tex-mex cooking, where they are combined with chilies and added to salsas, guacamoles, and rice dishes. Sometimes I am called Mexican parsley, or Chinese parsley. I have two common names, and two entirely different identities and uses. Answer: I am Coriandrum sativum. In the first or vegetative stage of my life I am referred to as Cilantro. After I flower and develop seeds, I am referred to as Coriander.

am a powerful herb with many health benefits. I was believed by the ancient Chinese to bestow immortality. I am typically referred to as a “gateway to health” because of my anti-inflammatory properties. I have potent liver supporting properties, and am an excellent source of phytonutrients and flavonoids. I am a great source of potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium. I contain folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin A, beta carotene, and vitamin C. I help with the absorption and assimilation of Vitamin D. I can help detoxify the body by aiding in the removal of heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, aluminum and lead. I can help lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol levels. I have a diuretic and detoxifying effect that can help lower the risk for kidney stones. My anti-oxidant properties include beta carotene, vitamin C and E, ferulic, caffeic acid, kaempferol and querctin. This makes me a good anti-cancer herb. The oil from my seeds can kill bacteria related to food borne diseases such as E. coli and salmonella, so I am a great tonic for food poisoning. I have powerful anti-fungal properties, and have been proven to be effective at killing Candida Albicans overgrowth

New Application of

Old Truths by Rev. C. Dee Coy The Truth behind all wisdom simply is. Whether we seek that truth from the standpoint of philosophy, religion, or even science seems largely irrelevant if finding it, discovering it, revealing it, does not result in a practical application of it. The truth/principle/law has always been. Wisdom is our recognition of it. New thoughts about it afford the practical application of the truth in the present moment. Wherever a committee of two or more gathers for the purpose of implementing something new, it seems there is always someone in the group who can’t help reminding the rest that we “don’t need to reinvent the wheel.” The statement is typically followed by sheepish nods from those of us who have no other response to offer such profoundness. Application of the truth behind it in the present moment allows us to focus our limited attention and resources back on what we want to accomplish, not on how it will get done. Ecclesiastes is one of the wisdom books found in the Old

Testament or Hebrew Bible. In it we read “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” While the wisdom of this statement seems obvious, its tone is rather pessimistic. If there is nothing new under the sun and nothing new is possible, what’s the point, right? The discoveries and theories of quantum science lead us to believe that all possibilities exist right now, waiting for the opportunity to collapse into experience. We provide that opportunity by volition, by choice, by thinking beyond probability and occasionally saying yes to that possibility of more. The truth, the law, the principle is never new and that is not the point. The point is that each truth, each law, each principle is infinite in its application and what’s new is realizing its fullest expression in this moment. Creating the space for each, more fuller, expression seems practical to me. About the author: Rev. Dee Coy is a recent transplant to Cincinnati and now serves as the Senior Minister of Center for Spiritual Living or Greater Cincinnati located at 5701 Murray Avenue, Cincinnati OH 45227. The Pofower Positive

Thinking Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

e careful what you think. Take a moment to think about that statement. Most people are not aware of the power of their thoughts. The mind is very powerful. It is able to operate a human body primarily autonomously. We do not have to consciously command our lungs to fill with life sustaining air, extract the much needed oxygen, absorb it into our bloodstream and send it to our heart where it is pumped throughout the body to allow the organs to function. The brain handles most of our bodily functions without conscious thought.

B

thus creating obstacles for ourselves. Shouldn’t we ask for and expect the best?

Stay Calm and Think Positive The Energy of Our Thoughts Manifest

Now think about the power of conscious thought. If you understand that everything is made of energy, just in various forms, it is very feasible that our thoughts attract energy. Thus, whatever we think about most will attract the energy necessary to make it manifest. That is why it is so important to think positive thoughts. We want to manifest the positive thoughts we have, not all of the negative things society has taught us to think. In other words, think of the best case scenario, not the worst. Then act as if it has already happened. Live in the present while your thoughts, with the help of Spirit, manifest your dreams. Think of the miracles we can accomplish!

Emotions Push the Energy of a Thought Forward

When we focus on an issue – a problem or a desire – we attach emotional energy to that issue, to that set of thoughts. That emotional energy pushes the thoughts forward. The reason to keep those thoughts positive, regardless of our circumstances or fears, is that we want to draw the best toward us – not those awful outcomes that our minds can turn to. This culture tells us to be practical, and the implicit message in that is to be always prepared for the worse to happen. That is exactly the wrong prescription because when we do that, we are attaching strong energy to what we don’t want,

When you do have a difficult situation, stay calm, keep breathing. Make a plan to deal with what you perceive, but don’t enlarge the problem with fear. Then turn that statement to a positive one. If you’ve been fired, deal with what you have to do about unemployment, etc., but also begin to focus on, with a grin on your face, the fun new job you will end up with. If it’s time for a career change, add that into your plans. Don’t focus just on replacing the money – that will keep you in fear. Use the word prosperous to guarantee yourself the amount of money you need. Then picture and focus on the great team in the new office you will go to everyday, the interesting new work you will be doing, the easy commute, and the prosperity that will be yours. Judy Peace has been offering tools for transformation and self-understanding by utilizing the ancient arts of Astrology, Palmistry and Tarot. Since 1987 Judy has professionally used these tools to hold the light for others to see their path more clearly. In 1988 she co-created Waves of a New Age on WAIF 88.3 FM. The show is still on air 26 years later. In 2006 she introduced Conscious Choice Cinema to the community by bringing conscious film to Cincinnati/N. KY area. Judy is now opening a new chapter by offering her unique insight on “The Journey of the Soul” These insights will be based on her knowledge of Astrology and Tarot. Classes start Saturday, February 21, 1-3 PM. Location TBA. Contact Judy Peace at 859.491.7885. Patti Kessler, healer, coach and teacher, introduces the Angel Academy to Cincinnati. The Angel Academy is an in depth training for angels and ascended masters in a human body who are ready to awaken and explore their roles as architects of the New Earth. There are currently three classes in the training; Intuitive Teachings of the Masters, Being a Wayshower, and Walking Between Worlds; with two more classes in development. “Ultimately, I see the Angel Academy becoming a 9-month training program,” Patti says. “In the meantime, classes are offered individually.” Intuitive Teachings of the Masters begins Feb. 7, 2015. Contact Patti@pattikessler.com for details.

On January 1, 2015 RTE, Ltd. will begin accepting submissions for a new book titled Out of Our Minds Onto Paper. This book will be an anthology of women᾿s stories/poems who suffer, or have suffered, from a mental disorder or addiction.

Stop the Stigma! Jane Pauley, former television host of Today Show and Dateline NBC, said after being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, ‟My goal is to see that mental illness is treated like Cancer and to help everyone else see us in new and powerful ways.” Our goal is the same, with the addition of ‟Keep Talking the Crazy Talk.” We live in a society that doesn᾿t feel comfortable talking about mental illness, the word ‟crazy” is scary. YOU can be part of the movement to Stop the Stigma!

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
