About Whitireia Whitireia Community Polytechnic (Whitireia) is a government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua harbour, Whitireia has grown to become a tertiary institution of choice for over 7,752 students (4,471 equivalent full-time students), who study at one of our contemporary campuses in Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti and Auckland. In 2016, over 120 programmes of study are being offered to students, covering certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and master’s levels. All programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications.

The New Zealand Film and Television School is one of the only industry-run schools of its kind in New Zealand. It is unique with its visiting tutor programme where tutors come into the school direct from industry to teach all there is to know about film. With the recent shift to digital, the Film School boasts a stateof-the-art Arri-Alexa camera for training and filming projects, a high-end digital camera closest to 35mm film and in line with cinema and feature filmmaking. Located in Wellington city, the Film School offers students a one year, fulltime, Certificate in Introduction to Film and Television Production. The Film School’s aim is to turn out producers, directors and technical crews of the future; graduates who are well

prepared to make a career in film and/or television. A testament to the high calibre expected from students, end of year films produced by students have screened internationally at film festivals, and at the New Zealand International Film Festival.

The New Zealand Radio Training School is located at both our Wellington city and Auckland city campuses. It offers students complete hands-on training in radio. Owned by Whitireia New Zealand Limited, the New Zealand Radio Training School is one of the most respected radio training schools in New Zealand. Two programmes of study are offered; the National Certificate in Radio (Foundation Skills) and the Diploma in Radio Journalism (Broadcasting), covering all the things students need to know for a career in commercial radio including; copywriting, audio production, radio sales, podcasting, promotions, multimedia, (video, photography, blogging and social media) and live broadcasting. Students can choose from a range of electives including radio documentaries, creative broadcasting or industry internships (where available). Students not only study in a classroom but also in purpose built studios designed to provide a complete radio experience. Professional tutors all with comprehensive backgrounds in radio offer student’s highly interactive learning opportunities through practical hands-on study. The New Zealand Radio Training School keeps pace with industry, and in-turn offers training in tune with industry requirements.

Computer Power Plus is a specialist IT training provider with campuses in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. Industry recognised and practical qualifications are offered in a unique selfdirected learning environment. Students study on campus following a personalised schedule agreed to at enrolment. More than 90% of eligible graduates have been successfully placed into employment within the IT industry. Computer Power Plus works closely with a large network of IT employers and as a result can offer an exceptional level of support to graduates in this area. Degree academic entry requirements International Baccalaureate (IB): award of the full IB Diploma (24 points or higher), including English A1 at either Higher or Standard Level and any mathematics subject Cambridge International Examination (CIE): a minimum of 120 points on the UCAS Tariff at A or AS level; including grade D or better in at least three subjects (from the NCEA approved list); minimum grade E in AS English and minimum grade D in IGCSE mathematics or any mathematics passed at AS level NCEA Level 3 awarded, with at least three approved subjects of 14 credits each at Level 3 Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing (from NZQA specified list) Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of specified achievement standards or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627 (all three required) OR A minimum of 72 credits at Level 2 including a minimum of 14 credits in each of four subjects and a minimum of 30 credits with merit or excellence, including degree entry standards for numeracy and literacy

School Leaver Scholarships

Publishing Scholarships

Whitireia is pleased to offer Secondary School Leaver Fee Scholarships to students at selected secondary schools. Each scholarship is valued at up to $4,000 and assists with tuition costs for the first year of study on one of our multi-year degree or diploma programmes.

Scholarships are available for students studying on one of our publishing programmes. These include: Mason Publishing Scholarship

This scholarship is for students studying publishing at a tertiary education provider in New Zealand. Applications close on 31 January each year. The scholarship is awarded to the successful recipient for the year in which they apply and contributes to tuition fees for one academic year.

The Whitireia Te Reo Māori Scholarship is available for students fluent in Māori, with a passion for language and a commitment to a career in publishing. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is paid towards tuition fees for one year of study on a Whitireia publishing programme. Applications close on 30 November each year. Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships is a government-led training initiative whereby scholarships are granted to members of the Māori and Pacific Island communities. If you are aged between 18-34, of Māori or Pasifika descent you are invited to apply for a Trades Training Scholarship. Academic Support

Health

Students studying at our campuses in Porirua, KÄ piti, Wellington, Auckland and by distance, can access study support through Poutama Academic Learning Services. Academic support is available in classes, small groups, from a peer tutor, one-to-one and through our online Moodle site.

A health nurse is available by appointment at our Porirua campus. This service is free. Other health services available include a doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist and hearing therapist. There may be a minimal charge for some of these services.

All services are delivered by professional staff and are free.

Medical appointments can be arranged for students studying at our campuses in Wellington, KÄ piti and Auckland.

Careers Advice

Information & Enrolment

Our Career Consultant is located at our Porirua campus. Careers advice and support is available to all students.

Our Information & Enrolment team are the first point of contact for prospective and current students. Located at our Porirua campus, the team provides programme information, assistance with our enrolment process, student ID cards and fee payment facilities.

Childcare Centre A fully licensed childcare centre is located at our Porirua campus. Spaces are limited so an early enquiry is recommended. Find out more call 04 237 7842

Counselling A confidential, seven-day, 24-hour self-referral counselling service is provided off-campus by Vitae. Vitae is a professional company that provides Whitireia students with access to a team of independent counsellors and psychologists throughout New Zealand. Students are entitled to three free counselling sessions per year.

Financial Support Confidential budgeting advice is available. This service also provides information on grants, scholarships and emergency funding.

Staff are available at our other campuses to help with any questions you may have about any of our programmes, or studying with us.

Library Our library provides access to a wide range of resources including books, journals, audio-visual items, newspapers, many online databases, ebooks, study spaces and computers. Information skills training is available. A distance library service is provided to students studying at a distance or only on campus for a short period of time.

Polyshop Prescribed texts (at 10% discount) and second-hand texts are available at the on-site Polyshop at our Porirua

campus. A full range of stationery at very competitive prices, greeting cards, overseas calling cards and a range of other items are available for sale also. We also offer mobile phone recharging facilities and we are a dry-cleaning agency.

Student Hub The Student Hub is both a service and a place for students. The service provides free and independent advocacy and advice for all students. It is also a place to get involved in the student voice; where students can put forward their ideas about the teaching and learning, events and activities or anything to do with their experience at Whitireia. At the Porirua campus, it is where students can relax, get a free hot drink, eat, browse second hand clothes, grab a free book, get sports equipment, laminate or bind a presentation, use a computer, use a phone or just talk to someone who will listen. Student spaces are available at all our campuses. Students at other campuses can access the Student Hub services via phone, email or text or in person at our Porirua campus.

Students with Disabilities The Academic Advisor (Accessibility) works with students and staff to help remove barriers to learning for students with a disability.

Transport There is a bus service that runs between our Porirua campus and the WelTec Petone campus; the Route 97 Polytech Link. For information on the route, timetable and cost, check out www.metlink.org.nz

Māori Students Our Pou Whakamanawa (Māori Success Advisor) will respond to Māori students concerns. Advice and support is offered across a range of areas including educational, cultural, spiritual, economic, social and sometimes personal growth; they can also act as a mentor.

Pacific Students Our Pacific Success Advisor provides academic, cultural and pastoral support to Pacific students. Programmes and networks have been developed to support and enhance the success of Pacific students.

Ako Ake Café This is a dedicated study space for Māori and Pacific students, located at our Porirua campus.

Young Students Moving from secondary school to a polytechnic can be a big change. Whitireia have set up a number of support services to help young students make a successful transition. .

Frequently asked questions How do I find out about programmes? Information about what we offer can be found by checking out www.whitireia.ac.nz, by calling us on 0800 944 847 or by visiting any of our campuses.

How do I apply to enrol? Apply to enrol either in person, online or by post.

What do I need to provide? A completed Application to Enrol form, your birth certificate or passport plus any additional entry requirement information (such as health declaration, references, police vetting, criminal convictions declaration, record of learning, academic transcripts/records) if applicable.

Why do we ask for your birth certificate or passport? We need proof of your legal name, date of birth and citizenship or residency. If your name has changed you will also need to provide proof of the change e.g. marriage certificate.

Can I bring a photocopy of my birth certificate? Yes, if it has been verified (signed) by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace (JP) or kaumātua. We can photocopy and verify your original documents for you.

How do I get a student loan or allowance? Apply online at www.studylink.govt.nz, you should do this well before your programme starts so it’s processed in plenty of time.

How long does it take to confirm my enrolment? If you’ve brought in or sent us everything we need, it will usually take between two and five working days.

When do I pay my fees? After you have been offered a place on your programme and you have confirmed your acceptance of this, you can pay your fees.

How and when do I get my student ID card? After your enrolment has been completed, visit our Information & Enrolment team and they’ll organise it for you. You will need a student ID card to print, photocopy, access the library, the computer networks and other student support services at Whitireia.

Schools Liaison

Our Pacific Community Liaison team are responsible for engaging with our Pacific communities. Ethnic-specific staff liaise with Cook Island, Samoan, Tokelauan, Tongan and other Pacific community groups.

Our Schools Liaison team works with secondary schools providing a range of experience days, programme introductory courses and school partnership programmes. They also manage our STAR/Gateway and Wellington Trades Academy programmes.

Porirua Language Project The Porirua Language Project aims to provide quality adult learning in literacy skills and English as a Second Language to meet the needs of the multi-cultural community in Porirua. Find out more call 04 237 5283

In signing this Application to Enrol form, I undertake to pay all fees as they become due, and to meet any late fees and collection charges associated with debt recovery. The Whitireia policy on withdrawal and refund of fees may be obtained from Information & Enrolment.

Whitireia reserves the right to cancel or postpone any of the courses and/or programmes and shall not be liable for any claim other than the proportion of course/programme fees which the cancelled portion bears. Some courses and programmes may be dependent upon formal approval, Ministry of Education funding allocation and number of enrolments.

Privacy information Whitireia collects and stores information from this form to comply with government statutes and regulations. When required by law, we will release information to government agencies as directed. Whitireia observes the general conditions governing the release of information. You may see information about you and amend any errors.
