WILD FOR A WEST COAST WINTER

David Doubilet’s Turtle Flight, in the Royal BC Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit

While spring and summer are arguably Victoria’s prettiest seasons, a West Coast winter has a lot to recommend it. With mild temperatures and much less rain than our Mainland neighbours, Victoria is prime destination for fall and winter, offering an excellent selection of both indoor escapes and outdoor adventures.

History at Your Feet If a blustery spring day has you heading inside, aim your feet for the Royal BC Museum and the National Geographic IMAX Theatre. One of the most visited museums in Canada, the Royal BC Museum presents the natural and human history of the province in fascinating fashion. Must-sees include this winter’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit, the Natural History and First Peoples galleries and the re-created Gold Rush-era street. Also on-site is Helmcken House, built in 1852 for Dr. John Helmcken, and decorated at the holidays in 19th-century style. Social history comes alive at Craigdarroch Castle, completed in 1890 for the family of coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. Now a museum, the castle has been wonderfully restored and is an example of superb craftsmanship. Special programming is planned through the winter, including holiday activities reflecting the traditions of the time. The colourful shops and flavour-filled restaurants of Chinatown make this a great destination any time of year, especially with a 14

where.ca /WINTER 2015

Discover the Past walking tour exploring the stories of Canada’s oldest Chinatown. Around the harbour, in the community of Esquimalt, explore the region’s maritime history at the CFB Esquimalt Naval & Military Museum, at Naden on Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, where four themes run through the displays: Canada’s Navy on the West Coast; The Canadian Women’s Army Corps; The Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service; and The West Coast Defences. Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site are about a 20-minute drive from downtown in the West Shore. Fort Rodd Hill was built in the 1890s to protect the Royal Navy Base at Esquimalt. Explore three coast artillery gun batteries, barracks, searchlight emplacements and other historic buildings on the shores of Esquimalt Harbour. Also on-site is the first lighthouse built on Canada’s West Coast, dating from 1860. Exhibits tell fascinating stories of the lighthouse keepers who have stood watch and shipwrecks along the rugged coastline.

Family-Friendly Fun Families will want to ensure popular local escapes like the Victoria Bug Zoo and the nearby Miniature World are on their to-do list. The recently expanded Miniature World offers exhibits fascinating to young eyes, depicting scenes from literature and history, while at the Bug Zoo, knowledgeable entomologists make the intriguing insects interesting to all,

The City of Gardens is also recognized for its excellent year-round golf and on a warm winter day, there are few better places to be. Excellent choices include Bear Mountain Golf Resort, featuring two Nicklaus-designed courses carved into the mountain overlooking the city,` the Olympic View Golf Club, a short drive from downtown and Highland Pacific.

INCOMPARABLE

Mild temperatures mean that while the rest of the country is working the treadmill, locals are setting the pace on local trails. Walkers and runners enjoy the scenic 10km loop trail around Elk and Beaver Lakes, or take in the waterfront views with a stroll or jog along Scenic Marine Drive. Prefer two wheels? Try a cycle along the multi-use Galloping Goose and Lochside trails, which travel from downtown to Sooke, or head north through picturesque farmland to the Saanich Peninsula and Sidney.

Celebrating Victoria’s Cultural Season While the arts figure pominently in Victoria throughout the year, the winter really brings to light the city’s “cultural season.”

Ballet Victoria presents The Gift, December 27 and 28.

This year, two of Victoria’s treasured cultural institutions celebrate significant milestones. The Victoria Symphony’s 75th season continues with an eclectic line-up of performances, including Ballet Meets Broadway with Ballet Victoria, an evening with Yo-Yo Ma and Haydn’s Messiah in December and Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood in January. Pop, rock, rhythm and blues are all part of Victoria’s cultural season, ranging from boogie woogie pianist Michael Kaeshammer at the McPherson Playhouse to Blue Rodeo, January 28 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Come February, don’t miss Pacific Opera Victoria’s The Barber of Seville. On the dance stage, there’s The Gift from Ballet Victoria in December and Romeo and Juliet, March 8 and 9, plus the So You Think You Can Dance troupe in January. The exceptional Belfry Theatre invites you to join its 40th anniversary “season of celebration.” The Belfry opens with Chelsea Hotel – the Songs of Leonard Cohen to November 15 before Joan McLeod’s The Valley, February 2 to 28, a moving story about a dramatic police encounter that binds four people together – a mother and her teenage son, a policeman and his wife. From April 12 to May 8, the Belfry turns to the music of Broadway for Puttin’ on the Ritz – the Music and Lyrics of Irving Berlin. Langham Court Theatre has a rich winter lineup, beginning with the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play Doubt, A Parable, November 18 to December 5, followed by a toe-tapping new year production January 13 to 30, Stepping Out, a comedy by Richard 16

Harris. Set in a dingy church hall in early 1980s North London, this is a warm, funny comedy about the lives, laughs and loves of a group attending a weekly tap dance class. The theme gets decidedly more serious March 2 to 19 with Female Transport, as sexism, classicism, altruism, oppression and repression punctuate this story of six women convicted of petty crimes who endure a six-month voyage from 19th Century England to a penal colony in what we now know as Australia. The University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre line-up ranges from Bertolt Brecht’s biting satire The Threepenny Opera in November to Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, March 10 to 19. In family theatre, Kaleidoscope Theatre brings two must-see shows this winter: Munsch-ercise, November 20 to 29 and the classic Robinson and Crusoe, bringing family adventure to the stage in April.

HOT ART From oneTree

TIM PITSIULAK, MASSIVE MOVE

Mad for Madrona Downtown Victoria’s Madrona Gallery celebrates the Canada’s North with Contemporary North II, featuring new works by Shuvinai Ashoona, Tim Pitsiulak, Nicotye Samayualie and Ningeokuluk Teevee. November 21 to December 5.

Visit the Bateman Centre this winter to take in the oneTree exhibit. Exploring the fascinating relationship between art and nature, the project celebrates the past, present and future of one particular bigleaf maple tree by salvaging its wood, making functional art from it and recording the creative process. For almost a century this old-growth maple from the Cowichan Valley, just north of Victoria, stood witness to the events that shaped Vancouver Island. But in October 2014, the tree needed to come down for safety reasons. Today, viewers are invited to celebrate this tree through an exhibit of exquisitely pieces made from its wood in this collaborative exhibit project of the Centre, Live Edge Design and wood artisans from across Vancouver Island.

NEIGHBOURHOODS

INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants and services. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government House Gardens and the Art Gallery

of Greater Victoria. Northwest of downtown, over the Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to CFB Esquimalt, beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum. OAK BAY This charming area of Tudorstyled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens is a few minutes’ drive from downtown. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. Dining options range from English-style pubs and afternoon tea houses to modern bistros and beautiful waterfront dining rooms, including the Marina Restaurant. Oak Bay is also one of Victoria’s best paddling and cycling areas. Beach Drive, Estevan Village, the Oak Bay Marina and Willows Beach are popular stops. www.oakbaytourism.com OLD TOWN / CHINATOWN Just north of Bastion Square and the shops of Government Street is Old Town. During the Gold Rush in the mid1800s, this area was known as “the other side of the tracks.” Now, Old Town is a popular shopping and dining area. Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a landmark constructed to recognize Chinese immigrants’ participation in establishing the City of Victoria. SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, the gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary. Just east of Elk/Beaver Lake Park is the seaside neighbourhood of Cordova Bay, valued for its rural beauty and unparalleled views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Islands. Highlights here include a charming collection of shops and galleries called Mattick’s Farm, Cordova Bay and The Ridge golf courses SAANICH PENINSULA AND SIDNEY The pastoral Saanich Peninsula is home to a number of excellent attractions, including the famous Butchart Gardens, Victoria Butterfly Gardens, Heritage Acres and several wineries. Enjoy good

cycling opportunities and pleasant drives throughout the Peninsula. Sidney is a charming seaside town with picturesque marinas, oceanside walking paths and great restaurants, galleries and shops. Sidney attractions include the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre and the BC Aviation Museum. WEST SHORE COMMUNITIES AND SOOKE West of Victoria along Highway 14, discover the communities of View Royal, Highlands, Colwood, Langford, Metchosin and Sooke, which offer a wide variety of outdoor activities. West Shore attractions include Olympic View Golf Course, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites, Hatley Park at Royal Roads University, Adrena Line Zipline, the Sooke Region Museum and a thriving arts community. West of Sooke, find beautiful scenery at French, China, Sombrio and Botanical beaches.

“From the darkest days of the Second World War to the heat of the Cold War, Sampson-Matthews Ltd. produced archetypal Canadian scenes for installation in barracks, banks, embassies and mess halls, schools, libraries and government offices. Commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada, a total of 117 silkscreen images of works by more than 50 artists, including A.J. Casson, A.Y. Jackson, Emily Carr and Arthur Lismer, formed the basis of the patriotic enterprise.”
