A staggering one billion text messages are sent every month worldwide. But is texting just a pain in the neck? We asked Bexhill osteopath, Clare Kersley. “Frequent or prolonged looking down at a mobile phone or IPad, can cause neck and upper back pain. Over time that head down posture can lead to early wear and tear arthritis, disc compression, muscle damage and even nerve damage, respiratory and digestive problems.” Clare explained: “Your head weighs around 10lb, and that weight is supported largely by your spine. When you bend your neck to look down at your phone or your IPad, the 10lb weight shifts forward. That shift puts significant leverage on your neck and upper back. Tilting your head down by just 15 degrees increases the load on your spine from 10lb to 30lbs. At a 60 degree angle, that 10lbs becomes 60lbs of weight. That’s a huge workload for your neck and upper back.” “A simple change of posture can greatly ease the strain.” At her practice on Blackfields Avenue in Bexhill, Clare uses a range of techniques to treat neck and back pain. “My role as an osteopath is to help your body to help itself. So my treatments aim to restore movement and flow, and to ease tightness and strain so that your body can do its healing. Soft tissue massage and stretching can be helpful, so too can gently moving and mobilising restricted joints. I tailor my treatments for the individual patient. Different things are appropriate for different people.” Contact Clare on 07954 327614 or visit her website www.clarekersley-osteopath.co.uk

In addition to the entertainment and games there will be children related market stalls together with the Hailsham Street Market regular traders, a hog roast and giant raffle. So come down to Vicarage Field from 10.00am to 4.00pm for a fun day. A date for your diary. Hailsham Summer Market, Saturday 30th July – Italian market stalls, food and drink stalls and Hailsham FM.

We booked our table for fathers’ day at Callenders Restaurant in Hailsham today. We were in Hailsham doing the shopping and popped in for some lunch. When we saw the Fathers’ day menu we booked it immediately. Almost everyone loves a roast on a Sunday, and for those who don’t, there’s a whole selection of fabulous specials. I love the fresh salads, served with a portion of saute potatoes and a cool glass of pinot, perfect. If dad fancies something special there’s a great choice of steaks, fresh fish and wild local game, with a pint or two of good beer. Of course the kids love the home-made pure beef burger, topped with bacon and melted cheese and served with Callenders’ fab triple cooked, hand cut chips. And with a good vegetarian and vegan choice and a gluten free selection too, I’d say there’s something for everyone

“SWING SESSION “ RETURNS!

O

h yes, I remember the Six Five Special, the very first Rock and Roll programme on the BBC in 1957. It was fun, exciting and made us want to dance, and we did! Now there is a new Rock and Roll show catching the excitement of the Six Five Special but with a Rock and Roll love story too. The boys and girls meet at the Youth Club in town to dance and get together, they travel there by train (steam of course). But every story has a baddie and this one is no exception, Dr Beeching is going to close the line; how will they meet again? Some old favourite songs in the show, to get the memories going again, and some new songs written specially that will really get your toes tapping, maybe even get you doing the hand jive. Have you still got your drainpipe trousers, drape jacket, frilly underskirt and pretty dress? Why not come in 1950’s dress, ready to reminisce. www.six-five-special.uk

Rosamund Pike joins 7 year old patient for premier viewing of Morgan Stanley Garden for Great Ormond Street Hospital

he Award Winning British actress joined garden designer Chris Beardshaw and 7 year old GOSH patient Ava Watt to open the special woodland garden which will be transferred to the hospital immediately after the show and enjoyed by families at GOSH for years to come. The idea for the garden grew from the long standing relationship between Morgan Stanley and Great Ormond Street Hospital and is the latest in a series of projects. The garden will provide a much needed, secluded and reflective green space for patients and families of children undergoing treatment. With 30 trees, topiary and hedging, 1,000 plants and 30 tonnes of soil, the garden will sit on a roof top at the hospital, providing a beautiful idyll for familes to admire and enjoy. Rosamund Pike said ‘the garden is such a beautiful creation and I am delighted to be here at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show opening

the garden today. When all the crowds have gone home from the show, it will be enjoyed for years to come at the hospital and in my view, this makes it even more special’.

(R to L) Rosamund Pike with GOSH patient Ava Watt and mother Kylie Pointer

Tim Johnson, Chief Executive at Great Ormond Street Hospital Childrens Charity said ‘After many months of research and planning we are delighted to see the garden brought to life and it will make a real difference for families of children in the hospital’s care. The actual project of moving the garden from Chelsea to the hospital will be part of a special BBC Big Build programme with Nick Knowles. Designer and broadcaster Chris Beardshaw is involved with a wide range of horticultural projects and educational initiatives. His broadcasting career spans over 17 years and he can currently be heard as a regular panelist on Radio 4’s Gardeners Question Time.

Midsummer Roses at Pashley Come mid-June the roses are glorious at Pashley. Masses of gorgeous pinks can be found spilling out of their box hedged borders in the formal Rose Garden and the pale pink, abundant blooms of Rosa Irene Watts parade either side of the Rose Walk. In the Herbaceous Borders many red hued shrub roses in the beds are complemented by rich red climbing roses on the eighteenth century walls, while in the pool garden the unusual silver sheened petals of Rosa Burgundy charmingly mirror the gleam of the water. Such is the profusion of roses at this time that even the front of the house is covered in the pink tinged, creamy yellow flowers of the climbing Rosa Gloire de Dijon. Pashley’s blend of old fashioned and modern roses are complemented by foxgloves, clematis, London pride, sweet peas and summer flowering shrubs. Over the Special Rose Week, Tuesday 14th every day to Sunday 19th June, there will be the opportunity to take a rose themed walk round the gardens with the Head Gardener and purchase a good selection of potted roses from 22 times Chelsea Gold Medal winners Peter Beales Roses. Animal & Pet Services

The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare was established in 1975. A cornerstone of the Trust’s founding policy then, as now, was to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. Our Animal Rescue Centre in Hadlow Down, nr Uckfield in East Sussex, provides a base for the animal rescue and re-homing work. Over the years, the Rescue Centre has also become a permanent home to many animals that it is not possible or desirable to re-home. Funds are raised with the generous support of individual donations, legacies, local fund raising, animal sponsors and our charity shops in Uckfield, Hailsham, Eastbourne and Heathfield. We receive no Local Authority, Government or Lottery funding.

Guide Launched To Help Tackle Dog Obesity Problem

T

New Kennel Club resource set to tackle hefty problem of canine obesity

he UK’s largest organisation dedicated to dog health and welfare, the Kennel Club, has launched a comprehensive guide to help dog owners tackle the nation’s growing canine obesity problem. Obesity in dogs is one of the fastest growing health concerns affecting man’s best friend today, occurring in dogs of all ages and types. It is estimated that around 45 per cent of all dogs in the UK are overweight. To help combat this, the Kennel Club has launched a new information guide to assist owners of overweight dogs in managing their pet’s weight. This new booklet is the latest addition to a collection of over 20 free information guides that give advice on a number of key issues facing dog owners today. The guide discusses how to tell if your dog is overweight, examines the causes of obesity and provides owners with tips and advice to help their dog lose weight. Aimée Llewellyn-Zaidi, Head of Health and Research at the Kennel Club, said: “Letting a dog become overweight can affect their quality of life and shorten their life span dramatically. Even letting them become moderately overweight can influence their life expectancy. “Overweight dogs can suffer from the same health problems that overweight humans do, including heart disease, joint conditions and diabetes. The good news is that these very serious effects are avoidable and largely reversible, and by keeping dogs in shape, owners can help them live longer happier lives.” Dogs, like humans, need a balanced diet and the right amount of exercise to stay fit and healthy, but finding that balance is not always simple. Signs that a dog is becoming overweight include: s A bigger and rounder face s A reluctance to go for walks

s Difficulty walking s Easily getting out of breath s Frequently being tired or sleeping a lot s A thick fatty neck s Ribs cannot easily be felt if you run your hands along their side s They don’t have an obvious waist (looking from above and the side, does their body go in between their ribs and hips?) The Kennel Club already offers a number of resources to help raise awareness of the problems of canine obesity, including its Get Fit with Fido campaign, Breed Watch, Breeder Education seminars and Pet Health Information pages on the Kennel Club website. The obesity information guide supports both owners who are struggling to manage their dog’s weight and veterinary practices who wish to provide comprehensive information to those clients who need it the most. Veterinary practices that wish to keep their clients informed about the risks and management of canine obesity can direct owners towards the free online version, or can order small quantities of printed copies for free, or larger volumes at cost value plus postage and packaging.

The Kennel Club’s new ‘How to manage your dog’s weight’ information guide can be accessed for free by visiting www.thekennelclub.org.uk/doginformation.

Wild Bird Care

Birds of a feather.. B

ack in 2009, while working in *another place*, Joe (a young man of just 19 who worked with me in the garden centre) and I decided we would like to try and open a shop that specialised in “Birdy stuff”. It was a big gamble as many independent retailers were closing down, especially those situated in small villages. Also I was 63 at the time and certainly in the late evening of my working life (tho’ to be fair I still maintained my stunning good looks). After searching for some time we decided on a converted old storeroom on a farm in Salehurst. We eventually opened *Feathers* on 29th May 2010. With Joe and I being very keen birders plus each able to contribute different skills, Feathers has been a remarkable success. “Customer care” was our priority, only selling premium food and feeders at very competitive prices and selecting good, established advertising mediums such as *What’s On* has enabled

us to go from strength to strength. Six years on after opening an extension to house a much larger selection of optics, Feathers is now a thriving, friendly home from home for customers to comfortably purchase all things birdy. A big thank you from Joe and I for these amazing first six years, we couldn’t have done it without you. Allan..........
