STOCKPORT SPORTS

WELCOME It’s back to the bread and butter of league business today after last Saturday’s cup win which gave everyone at the club a real boost. It was a determined performance against a hard working Rochdale side that would have been ahead at the interval but for a stunning save from the penalty spot from Paul Hughes. That proved decisive and two late goals after the hour mark sealed the win, leaving us to enjoy the buzz in the clubhouse afterwards as we waited for the quarter final draw to come through. That has produced another big game to look forward to as we will entertain Bootle here at The Recreation Ground in the quarter final early next year. Our visitors today are having a difficult season as they try to turn round a series of poor results and stay in this division. Our previous encounter this season at Stockport Sports Village saw WEST recover from an unfortunate own goal midway through the first half to equalise straight from the start of the second period and then go on to gain all 3 points. We would settle for the same again this afternoon as we aim to consolidate our own league position. Our visitors seem to enjoy playing here and sometimes we are not clinical enough to put away the chances we create, or mean enough to keep the ball and starve the opposition of possession when we get ahead. AFC Blackpool set out their stall to get a point in the last league game here, and thanks to some superb goalkeeping they succeeded. That result boosted their confidence and last weekend they romped to a 4-0 away win at Congleton. It is a truism that there are no easy games and at this stage of the season we need to keep adding points to our league tally and stay well away from trouble ourselves. Our league record this season is virtually identical to what it was at the same stage last season, so let’s all get behind Andy and the squad again today as we push for another home win. THANK YOU TO OUR NEW SPONSORS Last Saturday we were delighted to welcome three partners from the local Chorlton office of solicitors HLF Berry. The company have taken out a pitch board sponsorship and were able to have some photographs taken with the squad on the pitch just prior to kick off last Saturday. [see photo inside]. League press officer Ian Templeman was also present at the game and obliged with a feature on the Counties website this week. Everyone needs legal advice sometime and if you’re in that position please contact the company at www.hlfberry.com or call the Chorlton office on 0161 860 7123. FOOTBALL REMEMBERS WEST DIDSBURY + CHORLTON AFC and STOCKPORT SPORTS join together today to commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce – to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place on Christmas Day 100 years ago on the battlefields in Belgium. Soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire and firsthand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. The players of both teams will join together in a mixed group photograph which will be added to thousands of similar photos being taken across football today. We will also be holding a special event on Sat 27th which is the nearest day to the centenary of the Christmas Truce, when we are at home to Maine Road. FORTHCOMING FIXTURES AND EVENTS Next Saturday 13TH December is our delayed Community bonfire with a rather festive theme. Please support this if you can and bring down family and friends to help make our annual fundraiser a big success. Saturday 20th we are at home at 3pm to AFC Liverpool and then on Saturday 27th December we host neighbours Maine Road, again at 3pm. Thank you for your ongoing and growing support, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. Rob Turley

From the Dugout… Hello and welcome to today’s game against Stockport Sport. We have had a busy couple of weeks since I last wrote within these pages with trips to Bootle, Ramsbottom and Nelson in a short space of time. Add in the visit of AFC Blackpool two weeks ago and I’m pleased to report the only defeat we’ve suffered in that time was against Evo-Stik Premier League opposition when we finally succumbed 8 minutes from time having matched and at times outplayed the highest ever placed opposition we’ve faced in our history. On the field we could take heart from that performance as we’d done the hard work on Saturday to secure three points against Bootle and we wish Ramsbottom United the best of luck in the next round at Atherton Collieries. Against AFC Blackpool we dominated the game from start to finish in difficult conditions, we played some pleasing stuff and on another day we’d have won that by 4 or 5 but credit must go to the opposition for their own performance. It’s starting to sound like a broken record but in the stands that day we had Anthony Potts, Lee Malkin, Richmond Botchey, Nic Evangelinos, Chis McDonagh and Jerome Bryson but to name a few, if just one of these players had been fit then I think the result might have been different. However players such as Kieran Brocklehurst have come in, done well and really taken their chance and as a manager you can’t ask for more. At Nelson we started brightly, took an early lead with a good goal, won a penalty, got on the wrong end of an awful decision when the referee failed to send off their goalkeeper and they were level before we’d really got to grips with the decision despite having scored a second. Against a side that were expected to challenge for honours at the beginning of the season we played some excellent football, really dug in and grafted and we thoroughly deserved the point and possibly more. Enjoy the game. Andy Nelson

West 2 Rochdale Town 0 match report‌ West beat Rochdale Town 2-0 in a hard fought game at Brookburn Road to advance to the Quarter Finals of the MEN United Cup for the first time ever. West manager Andy Nelson named a much changed side with Dion Battes making his first start for the club, Scott Mason and Mark Rogers moved into the back four with starts handed to Tre Baldwin-Willis and Jordan Poole. Both teams started brightly, despite the pitch conditions, with Wests first chance coming to Nicolaos Evangelinos got on the end of a low Adam Hilton cross at the near post but turned mistimed his shot. At the other end Rochdale missed a great chance when un-marked at the far post and blazed the shot over. It was a warning from Rochdale as Paul Hughes was forced to make a top class save from point blank range after West had failed to deal with a long throw in. Rochdale continued to press with the home side only having sporadic chances, the best of which fell to Tre Baldwin-Willis. Having won a corner after Kieran Brocklehurst’s long range shot was deflected over. The corner from Mason was flicked on at the near post to Baldwin-Willis at the far post but his volley flew into the trees behind the goal. The big turning point in the first half came on 29 minutes when West lost possession in midfield, the Rochdale winger raced down the right, he cut inside but was clipped by Alex Baird who was racing back, and the referee awarded the penalty. However the penalty was brilliantly saved from Hughes, diving high to his right and tipping it round the post for a corner. It was a huge let off for West who almost capitalised immediately when Scott Mason rattled the Rochdale cross bar with a thunderous free kick from 35 yards. Rochdale Town had two late chances at the end of the first half but the scoreline was 0-0 with the visitors slightly the better side. The first chance of the second half came when Brocklehurst chased an under hit back pass but the Rochdale Town keeper was off his line quickly to block the shot whilst a last ditch tackle prevented Baldwin-Willis from scoring the rebound. West made their first change with Lewis Schofield on for Adam Hilton and had an immediate impact crossing for Jordan Poole whose shot forced the Rochdale keeper into a low save down to his left. The West goal came very much against the run of play as Rochdale Town had enjoyed a sustained period of pressure forcing a series of corners and having a chance cleared off the line. However on 67 minutes after a quick throw out of defence from Hughes, the pass then released Evangelinos who raced down the right, cut back and squared the ball to Lewis Schofield who finished low into the bottom left hand corner. It was Lewis’ third goal of the season and his first since the 4-1 win away to Abbey Hey on September 16th. Steve Settle came on for Baldwin-Willis as West went in search of putting the tie beyond Rochdale. It was almost two immediately as Brocklehurst was released one-on-one with the visiting keeper making an excellent save. Brocklehurst went close again after a great Mason cross heading onto the bar from a tight angle albeit with the entire goal at his mercy from mere yards out. It was 2-0 on 76 minutes as Settle broke the offside trap down the right hand side thanks to a great pass from Poole and played in a low diagonal cross to Evangelinos at the far post who made no mistake for his 4th goal of the season. Settle almost made it three again breaking the offside trap again, this time racing into the box himself but his shot was fired high clearing the protective netting behind the goal. Rob McKay

WW1 Centenary Remembrance at Wests… Football to honour 1914 Christmas Truce centenary this December The Duke of Cambridge and Theo Walcott have come together to help kick off Football Remembers - and mark the centenary of the First World War Christmas Truce. A joint project between The FA, Premier League, Football League and the British Council – Football Remembers marks the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Truce, when soldiers from both sides of the trenches laid down their weapons to play a game of football, share drinks and exchange gifts on No Man’s Land across the battlefields of the Western Front. The heart-warming tales of how football can break down the bleakest of barriers have been passed down through generations and illustrations of the events have become some of the most iconic of the First World War. HRH The Duke of Cambridge has expressed his pride in being involved with the Football Remembers initiative. “It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history. “We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times.” Every club in the country – from the Premier League to the grassroots - are being asked to create a unique photographic record of football a century on from the Christmas Truce in all games between 5-14 December. The same activity will happen at every match – a mixed squad photo featuring both teams in the spirit of the togetherness shown by troops from both sides in December 1914. So will join with football across the country on Saturday December 6th with joint picture against Stockport Sports today and again on December Sat 27th which is the nearest day to the centenary of the Christmas Truce.

From the Terrace… It feels like it’s been a couple of months since the last From the Terrace hit these pages. Well that’s because it has been and as always it has been a crazy busy couple of months around the football club. We’ve finally got out from under the Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday routine knowing that barring weather predicted to end the world as described on Sky Atlantic’s The Newsroom we should be spared too many midweek trips after Christmas. It has not all been slacking off though, I refuse to calculate how many miles the first team have travelled this season, and I’ve actually been spending my Thursday nights avoiding training by appearing on a new podcast. Counties Podcast is the only podcast exclusively covering the North West Counties featuring league committee member Martin Fallon, Atherton Collieries media officer Zach Pierce and me rambling on about the time they tried to get the bull out of the field when we went to Eccleshall. It is not just the three of us giving our verse putting the league to rights, we’ve been joined by a whole range of special guests throughout the league including Colne Manager Steve Cunningham, St Helens Town secretary Jeff Voller and Litherland Remyca’s press man Gary Langley. In addition we’ve also had interviews from managers all around the league including Glossop North End’s manager Chris Wilcock, Abbey Hey manager Luke Gibson and AFC Liverpool media man Alan Harrison. People have really responded positively and most people have really gone out their way to get interviewed. None more so than our own Alex Baird, but unfortunately the background noise was too great for it. Sorry Bairdy! The one exception was trying to interview Jim Vince of Congleton Town, he turned me down and they promptly went winless in four and Jim left the club, so watch out if I’m coming at you with my iphone. Overall the quality of the feedback has been positive, with people already having their own favourite segments and people within clubs taking the time out of their weekends to tell us how much they are enjoying the podcast. Why are we doing it? Well, there is an argument that the NWCFL is the strongest/most professional step 5/6 league in the country but we are surrounded by dozens of Premier League and Football League clubs plus an equally strong Northern Premier League and this was another way of promoting the 39 member clubs in a way completely different to other Step 5/6 leagues. It’s not for monetary gain either as we’ve only put our own money into the set up and all we ask is that if you enjoy our podcast to simply go down to a counties ground and tell them that we sent you. So please head to countiespodcast.com or search Counties Podcast on itunes to listen to or download the podcast. In just 7 episodes as of writing we’ve had more than 3,000 downloads which is incredible using just twitter to promote the podcast. Rob McKay WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History…Stockport Sports (formerly Woodley Sports) Woodley Sports won the Manchester League Division One title in 1992. The following year saw Woodley both win the Gilchrist Cup and take the Premier Division Runners-up spot. Work to enclose the ground began in 1996–97, and Woodley’s application to join the North West Counties League was accepted. By this time, the management team of John Imrie and Gary Lowe had been introduced. Both had played at the highest levels for professional and semiprofessional clubs such as Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Macclesfield and Runcorn. During the 1997–98 season Woodley set a North West Counties League record, when Peter Carty scored seven goals in a league game against Blackpool Mechanics. Carty was also Woodley’s leading scorer that season, netting 35 goals. Woodley also scored a record 102 league goals that season. During the summer of 1998 Woodley began work on its biggest project to date, the installation of floodlights. The lighted pitch gave the club a boost, enabling it to enter the FA Vase, Cheshire Senior Cup, North Western Trans Floodlit Cup and the FA Cup. The 1999–2000 season saw the club’s first ever FA Cup Match against reigning NCEL champions Ossett Albion, which resulted in a 2–1 victory for the Steelmen. The continued work of the club was rewarded that season when the Steelmen won the Second Division championship on goal difference from Curzon, winning 12 of their last 13 matches and drawing the other, to take its place in the top flight of the North West Counties League. The 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons saw the club consolidate itself in the top half of the NWCFL First Division, with its reserve team winning a double championship in 2002; it won the Reserve Division title for the second consecutive year and the Reserve Cup. The season finished with work beginning on a new 200-seat stand, which was due to be finished for the 2002–2003 season. The 2003–2004 was Woodley’s greatest to date. It won the Cheshire FA Senior Cup, beating Witton Albion in the final; unfortunately, that game was better-known for its “streaker incident”[clarification needed] than for its being the first time a North West Counties side reached the finals. The FA restructuring of the football pyramid allowed Woodley to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League by finishing fourth in the league. With the Lambeth Grove stadium passed for the Northern Premier League, the Club declared itself a limited companyeffective 1 August 2004. The 2004–05 season saw Woodley Sports compete in the NPL Division One; it finished 11th and reached the final of the Chairman’s Cup. Off the pitch the club obtained the support of two local businessmen, who have worked with the club on £3.5 million worth of development on the site. Phase one was the installation of a synthetic surface in July 2005, which insured no future postponements and provided an income stream for the club from hiring of the facilities. Future plans included new floodlights, additional seating, covered standing accommodations, new perimeter fencing and new treatment rooms for use by players and spectators. The 2005–06 season saw Woodley finish in their highest NPL position (finishing fourth, gaining an automatic playoff place), only to lose against Gresley Rovers. During that season, they sold striker Liam Dickinson to Stockport County for £2,000. A youth team was introduced; the previous squad moved up to become the reserve team, competing in the Lancashire Lancit League. 2006–07 was disappointing by contrast with a 10th-place finish; however, the season was notable for cup successes in major competitions at Conference North, Leigh RMI in the FA Cup and Moor Green in the FA Trophy. Home successes were gained against Marine and Whitby Town. However, they were defeated 8–7 on a penalty kick in overtime in the League President’s Cup semifinal at Premier League side Matlock, despite playing over an hour with 10 men. During the 2008–09 season, the team finished 13th in the Northern Premier League Division One North. Disappointing news was given to Woodley Sports when the administration of Stockport County was announced. Woodley were owed £150,000 from Stockport County for the sale of Liam Dickinson, and this shortfall put the club's future in doubt. However 18 year old Anthony Sarcevic was sold to Crewe Alexandra for an undisclosed fee. He came through the ranks of Woodley Sports and manager Trevor MacFarlane gave him the chance of first team football in September.

Name change to Stockport Sports The 2012/2013 season will mark a new chapter in the life of Woodley Sports FC. The club will undergo a complete makeover which will see them benefit from a full-time status, a new management team and even a new name. Stockport Sports FC will be born and their first leader will be Aston Villa legend Peter Withe. The 60-year old has returned from life living down under in Australia to take up the position and attempt to lead Stockport back up the football pyramid, from their current position in the North West Counties Football League. It could be seen as something of a coup for the club to have attracted Withe who represented England 11 times during the 1980s and also won a European Cup with Aston Villa but certainly proves that both club and manager have the same lofty ambitions. Withe will not come to Stockport as a managerial novice though, having already experienced life in the managerial hot seats of Wimbledon (1991), Thailand (1998-2002) and Indonesia (2004-2007). It is with Stockport though that Withe will want to really make his mark as a manager, as he joins up with a brand new squad who are all hungry for success and want to be competing with rivals Stockport County in the near future. The Club has collected a group of hungry young players who, with help from Withe, will be hoping to make their name at Stockport Sports. They will have the chance to do so on a full-time basis too, something which only a small amount of non-league clubs can boast. It gives local players who have fallen through the footballing net the chance to reignite their careers at Stockport, meaning promising individuals who may not get what they deserve at a club can still have the chance to make themselves a star at The Saxons. Another change the club will foresee is the changing of the Clubs nickname. Woodley Sports were affectionately known as The Steelmen but the new regime will see the Club being referred to as The Saxons. The nickname pays homage to the rich Saxon heritage of Stockport and pays tribute to those who named the town in the 18th Century. Despite all the changes perhaps overwhelming some, Stockport Sports will not neglect the community in its bid to become a major non-league side in the future. The Neil Rourke Stadium will boast a gymnasium which will be open for the public to use and the Stockport Sports Trust are also investing significant amounts of money to bring more full size and 5-a-side pitches to the community of Stockport in the hope that Stockport Sports can become a source of pride for a local community, as well as a blossoming football club. When the season starts in August, paying fans and members of the public will get to see first-hand the work that has been put in by many to set up Stockport Sports FC and the benefits it will bring to the community. To have a full-time football club at this level in the football pyramid is genuinely impressive and Peter Withe coming in as manager is another remarkable achievement for a forward-thinking Club. It will not be long before people are talking about the work Stockport Sports FC are doing both on and off the field and the rewards will soon outweigh the risks significantly.

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.

In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
