For the ďŹ rst time the OttawaCarleton District School Board has had to close the Bill Mason Outdoor Education Centre at West Carleton Secondary School for the winter months, but trustee Lynn Scott hopes that will change.

The centre, which provides outdoor education programs to West Ottawa schools, is now available in September, October, February, May and June only. “We’ve had our challenges in terms of the amount it costs us to run our education centres. They’ve been ongoing practically since they ďŹ rst started up,â€? says Scott. “Given our budget situation over the last several years and given the usage patterns, staff felt if we reduced our winter usage it would be more workable.â€?

The change, which has announced last fall, has meant some of the usual programs are not being offered but wherever possible the board has adapted, making use of the Mac Skimming facility that serves the east end of the city.

Kinburn Winter Carnival organizers expressed delight with the community spirit shown last weekend at the annual event.

The closure of the Fitzroy Centennial School in Kinburn in 2008 made it more difficult for the Kinburn Community Association to organize the carnival.

However, this year’s attendance and enthusiasm has organizers optimistic the carnival will survive and thrive.

About 65 people turned out Friday evening for the spaghetti supper, skating party and a pub night at the community centre.

“It was a great time,” said Kim MacKenzie, one of the main organizers.

“There was a lot of community spirit … and that’s what we we’re trying to accomplish,” she said.

She said the skating party had the best turnout in some time and the karaoke was a hit. “We have some very talented people here in Kinburn.”

Organizers were delighted when Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry showed up for supper, which was cooked by the Bethel United Church.

El-Chantiry said it is encouraging to see the small community hold events such as the winter carnival, Swampfest and the tractor pull.

“We like to support events that bring the community together,” he said.

“It was a good crowd, good people … they work hard.”

Saturday’s parade, a Bethel lunch, tug of war, dessert auction and games, including the hilarious Minute to Win It competitions, also attracted a decent turnout.

Reaghan Atkins, 12, was announced as winner of the carnival button design contest.

A building boom is bearing down on Ottawa, leaving city staff scrambling to keep up.

“I feel like Indiana Jones with a rock coming at me down the hall,” said city planner Arlene Gregoire, who explained the need for more building inspectors to the city’s planning committee on Feb. 8.

The city handles approximately 7,600 building permits each year. That’s about 900 to 1,500 more than the department’s staff can handle, Gregoire said.

“We have benefitted from a construction boom,” she said, adding that increasing development comes with increasing costs.

The planning department is asking for the equivalent of an additional five staff members in the 2011 draft budget.

Some of the overload will be handled

by students as part of an internship training program, although a similar program was slammed in a 2010 auditor general’s support.

The city’s auditor general reported 2,510 inspections were carried out from 2006 to 2008 by interns and summer students who didn’t have the proper credentials. Some of those inspections were credited to a qualified city inspector. City staff said the students will have the proper training and certifications this time around.

“The program has been amended and the requirements that have been set out by the province will be adhered to,” Gregoire said.

Students will be hired to make up the equivalent of about three full-time positions.

The city will save approximately $176,000 in the planning department thanks to service innovation and efficiencies.

Road reconstruction is falling behind in Ottawa, and rural roads are at the bottom of the pack for funding.

The city’s rural wards will be getting $7 million for road reconstruction or resurfacing in 2011 out of the about $60 million the city will spend on roads this year.

That overall amount is less than half what the city’s long-term plan calls for to be spent on roads each year, said Wayne Newell, the city’s general manager of infrastructure services.

Coun. Doug Thompson (Osgoode), who heads the city’s agriculture and rural affairs committee (ARAC), said Ottawa should be spending more on roads, particularly surfacetreating rural roads instead of using gravel. That cuts down on long-term maintenance costs, he said.

The councillors for Ottawa’s rural wards discussed the draft 2011 budget during the ARAC meeting on Feb. 10.

About $524,000 will be spent on ditches in rural areas in 2011 and $350,000 will be spent on a rural servicing strategy to plan for a sustainable water supply and safe wastewater disposal. That plan should be completed by 2014.

Widening the bridge that carries McCaffrey Trail over the Jock River tributary near Ashton to two lanes will cost $600,000.

The city will also spend $80,000 this year and $160,000 in each of the next two years to establish water supply facilities in rural areas where there are no fire hydrants. The project is meant to improve fire protection and allow residents to get better fire insurance rates. That project should be done by 2014.

Whether we face life after death is a question that may go forever unanswered.

But in the real world there is no question that the death of one animal provides life for many others.

From the smallest insect cadaver to the carcass of a moose, a dead animal never goes to waste.

An army of creatures exploits the dead and in many cases cannot survive without them.

This is particularly true in winter when life is separated from death by a thin, unsteady tightrope.

Starvation is the greatest threat facing winter-active creatures; falling victim to another animal places a not so near second.

While certainly not performed out of consideration, wolves and coyotes play pivotal roles in the survival of many other animals.

By killing large prey such as moose and deer, these large carnivores sustain themselves.

However, the leftovers are eagerly enjoyed by many animals including Red Foxes, Fishers, Martens, Common Ravens, American Crows, Blue Jays, Gray Jays, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, and even woodpeckers and Black-capped Chickadees.

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way Incidentally, wolves and coyotes are only able to accomplish their feats because they hunt as social units; the pack strategy is their key to success.

Ravens are particularly tied to the success of their mammalian benefactors.

They sometimes follow wolf packs in winter, patiently waiting until the pack is successful.

They sit on the sidelines while the hunters feast, sneaking in for a quick meal at every opportunity.

I have watched wolves give half-hearted chase to ravens, likely knowing their chances of catching one are about as good

as those of being able to fly.

Like matadors tempting bulls, ravens even seem to take turns teasing wolves away from a kill, giving the green light for other ravens to slip in for a snack.

In the far North, ravens are known to work as tag-teams.

One teases a sled dog (apparently from just beyond the reach of its chain) away from its meal while the other darts in to steal its food.

Berndt Heinrich, one of my favourite natural history authors, studied ravens in Maine.

His book Ravens in Winter is an excellent read and reveals many insights into the lives of these northern birds.

Heinrich wondered why some ravens, usually in pairs, were silent when dealing with a carcass while larger groups were constantly uttered screams and croaks.

The groups were highly animated with some birds fluffing up and strutting around while others slunk into the background.

What Heinrich found was nothing short of astounding.

The quiet pairs were resident adult birds, apparently wanting to keep the food to themselves.

The groups were comprised

of juvenile birds that actively sought to vocally solicit more of their kind. Their large numbers ensured a takeover of a resident pair’s bounty.

The group size also offered another benefit. The young birds

The Jan. 30 fundraising walk for the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County also wrapped up January’s Alzheimer Awareness Month.

A total of 444 walkers took part in the 16th annual event that attracted thousands of donors, hundreds of volunteers and dozens of sponsors.

Editorial

No simple answer to getting along Politics is a perfect breeding ground for debate and conflict but rarely agreement.

We rise in the morning and go to sleep at night awash in news from all over the world.

Most of that global information is threatening in nature.

The impression created is that there are cultures that refuse to co-operate with western society and when they arrive in North America for whatever reason they will do their best not to integrate with our humble but successful system.

The great fact about Canadian society is that we have the ability and inclination to embrace other cultures and people while somehow keeping hold of what we feel is innately ours. As a result, immigrants are able to adapt to a North American viewpoint without feeling their own roots are being threatened.

Around the world, politicians and social observers have stated that multiculturalism in their particular country does not work — that immigrants arrive in a country only to set up their own small society as a home away from home.

A closer look at the reasons people immigrate may explain why, in some cases, complete and healthy integration does not take place.

The bottom line for most, if not all newcomers to Canada, is jobs, and the freedom and stability to enjoy them.

Having a meaningful job and the rewards of achieving goals is a great way to keep discontent, frustration and, in the end, conflict to a minimum.

Capitalism may not be the Holy Grail socialist thinkers are looking for, but history shows that when capitalism is married to a democracy and dusted with just a pinch of socialism, a better deal is forged than in most other socialist and government models.

Watching the upheaval in the Middle East, one cannot help but cheer as one country after another finds the courage to stand up for what are basic human rights — the right to live free and without fear.

They too will have to find a model that incorporates a multi-cultural dynamic which recognizes one country overall but allows for individual freedom of expression.

A temporary (?) goodbye to SuperEx So there won’t be a SuperEx this year.

The Central Canada Exhibition Association board made the decision and announced it last week.

It has to do with the changes at Lansdowne Park and the unreadiness of the site the board owns out at Albion Road.

There are a lot of people who hope that the announcement means what it says — that the Ex is having a temporary hiatus and will be back in 2012. And there are some people who are indifferent, because the Ex no longer means anything to them any more.

Among the advantages cited for a move to new quarters away from the centre of the city is the added space that will allow the agricultural component of the Ex to be enhanced. Among the disadvantages is the distance for many city dwellers.

While the Landsdowne Park site was controversial for many who lived nearby, the Ex profited from the amount of walk-by traffic.

Reader comments on articles about the postponement are not always representative of public opinion, but it is worth noting the impression they generate that the Ex had become irrelevant to people’s lives, in the recreational as opposed to the agricultural sense.

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town It’s hard to see how the board can overcome this.

Many years ago, before the Ex became the SuperEx, exhibitions were hot. They showed people things they had not seen before; they were where people went to see the latest.

Last week’s Citizen story about the SuperEx was accompanied by a photo of an automobile race, a bunch of old-time cars whipping past the grandstand. Except that they were not old-time cars then, and the idea of them racing was fairly new.

The grandstand show was where people went for music that they couldn’t see anywhere else, big-name acts that were only heard on the radio or on records.

The grandstand show was a big deal.

In another way, the midway was a big deal too. Sure, people complained about

being ripped off by the games, but that was part of growing up, and the noise and excitement of the place was a kick for children and teenagers.

It is an understatement to say that things have changed.

The expansion of news media and the Internet means that we know what’s new before it even hits the street. We can watch cars race, if we care, on YouTube.

Kids can play games on their computers that are as exciting, to them, as anything available on the midway.

Nutrition scolds have frightened us off the midway food.

And the grandstand show was made irrelevant by music videos on TV, even before YouTube arrived.

As a people we are a bit jaded. If we haven’t seen everything before, we think we have. The sense of wonder, the wow! factor that drew people to the Ex in years gone by has gone by.

That, at least, is the pessimistic view, which has become the conventional one.

It may not be completely right. Travel with some pre-schoolers out to the Experimental Farm and watch them check out the lambs and cows and rabbits and you will see that wonder does still exist in this world.

Remember also that people still like to go out, particularly at summer’s end. Not everyone is content to stay home playing video games and watching stuff on the Net. So there is hope for the Ex. Granted, it faces stiff competition. Other popular fairs have grown up in Valley towns.

When the Ex was in its heyday, there was no ScotiaBank Place with its competing attractions.

There was no National Arts Centre for much of the Ex’s early life.

And, as noted, there were few of the electronic distractions in our homes.

The Ex’s task is to figure out a way to make us say “wow!” again. It’s not easy in this world, but not impossible either.

To the editor: The comments made by the local MP Cheryl Gallant re: the East coast fishing industry are totally in tune with the present government we have inherited with Mr. Harper.

Shameless patronage, an air of entitlement, fraying caucus discipline and utter policy confusion and uncaring.

Al Mills is to be commended on his effort to help bring under control the overpopulated coyote problem.

Farmers who have lost cattle and sheep are certainly grateful and appreciative to someone who understands.

People who have been threatened by or lost family pets are understandably thankful.

It is unfortunate that he has to deal with a small minority group of (two or three) who are completely ignorant of the problem. They have the same old ‘one thought agenda’ regardless of the situation.

To the editor: Letter writer Jacqui Ehninger-Cuervo (West Carleton Review, Feb. 10) states that she dislikes coyote killing contests, but that farmers, particularly smaller operations, need realistic solutions for protecting their sheep.

If fencing is not an option, then properly selected and trained guard animals are.

The secretary of a local district sheep marketing agency recently indicated she’s experienced no kills in her 26-member flock, something she largely attributes to her two Maremma breed dogs. Others count on their llamas.

Scores of studies have proven the effectiveness of guard animals. One large-scale study, involving 27,000 sheep, showed pre-

dation was reduced by 92 per cent by using special breed dogs.

It is important to separate the promotion and motivation around the coyote killing contests with the actual facts of livestock predation and options for protection.

All wildlife populations spike and fall.

An Ontario Soil and Crop Association report shows that even with increasing sheep and lamb production in Ontario, the loss due to predation has remained the same over the last decade at three per cent. Clearly then the majority of farmers are adopting successful protection methods.

This is further proven by a livestock evaluator in a local township who indicates he received only eight claims in 2010 compared to 20 in 2009 and 40 in 2008.

Coyote killing contests are about the thrill of hunting.

This certainly should not trump an informed understanding of the key role that coyotes play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem nor the concerns of the public for themselves and their pets, given the increasing number of dogs killed in traps or shot by coyote hunters.

Ice huts private not public places To the editor: With regards to the article ‘No drinking in ice huts: OPP’ in the Feb. 10 West Carleton Review, I am not a lawyer, but I think the OPP is mistaken in their interpretation of this act.

It appears that the argument could easily be made that an ice hut is a private place as defined in the regulations.

The article states that an ice hut is not a) a residence; b) premises in respect of which a licence or permit is issued; or (c) a private place as defined in the regulations.

The corresponding regulation that was omitted in the article seems to be in R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 718, that “(3) (1) For the purposes of clauses 30 (13) (a) and 31 (2) (c) of the Act”, defines a private place to be a whole bunch of things including, (2) An indoor place to which the public is not ordinarily invited or permitted is considered to be a private place except at the times when the public is invited or permitted access to it. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 718, s. 3 (2).

This is clarified by (3) Despite subsection (2), an indoor place that is

available for rental by members of the public for occasional use is not a private place. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 718, s. 3 (3).

It appears to me that a typical ice hut is an indoor place that the public is not ordinarily invited and as such is a private place.

Additionally many ice huts require registration to exist on the ice - this should be enough to make them legitimate enough to be a ‘place’.

Obviously if you were drinking outside your ice hut that would be an entirely different situation.

I suggest you review my points, and print a clarification if you also feel the OPP is incorrect.

It seems that there are a number of ice huts in this area and I believe the newspaper should be providing those owners with the proper information when it comes to the consumption of alcohol in these places.

This will also allow them to be better educated when the OPP come knocking during their patrols.

Tory MPs no friend to farmers

West Carleton councillor sticks up for his constituents To the editor: Re: Ms. Betty Freeman’s letter - City should stop harassing local paintball business, Feb. 10 West Carleton Review.

I would like to counter Ms. Freeman’s assertion that West Carleton-March councillor and recently appointed co-deputy mayor Eli El-Chantiry is somehow wasting Ottawa taxpayer dollars.

I am thankful that Mr. ElChantiry stands up for all the citizens of Ward 5 and does not turn a blind eye to

zoning violations simply because the violator is a business that makes contributions to charities.

In my mind, nothing speaks to higher integrity than a person like Mr. ElChantiry, who will not trade the inherent rights of residents simply because a business wants to set up shop in his constituency.

Charitable donations, regardless of amount or destination, do not entitle anyone to be above the law.

Thank goodness I live in a place where this is true.

Marked Paintball is a commercial paintball busi-

ness operating on a rurally zoned property. This is a violation of the city of Ottawa bylaws.

Residents of this neighbourhood have objected to this business’ presence directly with the owners, both verbally and in writing, including a 135-signature petition.

At wits end with the owner’s refusal to respect both the city bylaws and the residents’ right to enjoy their rural properties, this neighbourhood asked for the city’s help.

The city’s bylaw department charged the business

with zoning violations.

That is why this business is finally being taken to court. It is not because Mr. El-Chantiry has an agenda against business.

Marked Paintball could have established its business on commercial land over two years ago where no one would have bothered it, saving the owners what I am sure are considerable legal costs. The owners chose not to.

However, if the continued large scale development of the business is any indication, I highly doubt that the owners are being “bled dry”

as Ms. Freeman seems to think.

Standing up for the rights of your constituents is not harassment.

Mr. El-Chantiry is doing his job to preserve the rights of the Ward 5 constituents, and, in my opinion, is doing an admirable job.

He is protecting the law-abiding citizens from those who have no respect for their neighbours, or laws.

I can assure Ms. Freeman that as a resident living in the vicinity of this improperly zoned business, I feel that the city’s action is a very worthwhile use of my hard-earned tax dollars.

Maybe she would feel the same if her neighbourhood was threatened.

Bylaws should be respected by all business owners To the editor: In response to Betty Freeman’s derision of the city in regards to a paintball field in West Carleton (West Carleton Review, Feb. 10), there are established bylaws on which we all depend.

Residents select locations for their businesses and homes based on these.

If an individual buys land with knowledge of zoning designation, and chooses to set up a business with disregard for bylaws and area residents, it is unfortunate for all.

It is a shame, in times of budget

restraint, that taxpayers are forced to waste resources upholding laws as individuals continue to operate this business outside of their government day jobs.

It is also unfortunate that neighbours, who settled with reasonable expectations, are forced to put up with ongoing disturbances as this makes its way through court.

Regardless of one’s feelings about weekends of gun-popping, shouts, compressors, whistles and traffic, the city has bylaws to be upheld by our courts and elected officials. Whether or not a

business contributes to charities is irrelevant.

Residents of this area give to the community through funding and volunteer work; some have small businesses or farms in properly zoned areas, others work within the city; none of which has any bearing on property by-laws.

Respect for one another and city laws could have prevented wasted energy and funds on everyone’s part.

You can identify any car made in the last 50 years. You scored six goals that time, when you were older than Gretzky, at the neighbourhood rink. You saved a cat. No one tells a joke like you do.

And you just get better the older you are.

You can make a soufflé. You can play Beatles songs on the recorder. You can watch four games on TV simultaneously. You can figure out what’s wrong with the computer. And you know how all those sports columnists have been writing about what a considerate guy Gretzky is? Well, you’re pretty considerate too.

You hold the record, shared with a number of others, for never forgetting an anniversary.

You are absolutely terrific at putting things into alphabetical order. The Sudoku is child’s play to you, mostly. You make great things out of leftovers. No one is better than you at finding the bright side of things. No one can find a lost ball the way you can.

The signposts of ageing are many and they get more comical as you go along.

You remember becoming a teenager, bidding farewell to all that childish behaviour, and welcoming new varieties of even more childish behaviour.

You remember being old enough to drink legally, old enough to leave home for work or university, an adult. This is perhaps the first feeling of being old.

Then your baby sister goes off to university.

Then you become one of those older people you used to smirk at as a teenager – a married person, with a mortgage and a job, who stays in on weeknights.

Where does the time go, you ask.

But the process has barely begun. You have children of your own and that’s around the same time that you notice that the police officers are no longer older than you. The children become teenagers and you begin sounding like your parents.

I’m old, you think. And it’s all downhill from there. Soon, you are older than the police officers, older than the minister at the church, older than the dentist.

Your children grow up, turn 30. You

become a grandparent. You take naps.

Surely it can’t get older than this.

But it can. Last week you open up the newspaper and it says Wayne Gretzky has turned 50.

So there you are. You, as a grown-up, watched Gretzky as a kid. Now Gretzky feels old. How does that make you feel?

Perhaps it is not as shocking to you as all that. In this Facebook era, people are reconnecting with old friends, going to high school reunions, where they are surrounded by old people.

But there is a reassuring point in all this. Wayne Gretzky is 50 but he is not irrelevant.

Almost all of the dozens of records he set still stand. Someone broke one the other day but it was an obscure thing – most career overtime goals, or something like that. For the rest of it, he is still the guy.

But so are you, when you think about it. Your old records still stand. Sure, they are different kinds of records.

But no one flips pancakes the way you do, or finds a parking space, or empties the dishwasher. You can climb ladders like nobody’s business and you never run out of windshield washer fluid.

Just because Gretzky is 50 doesn’t mean he’s finished either. He can look forward to future accomplishments, such as the kind of stuff you’ve been

Organizers and participants are carefully watching the long-range weather forecast in the days leading up to the fourth annual Old Sled Run set for Feb. 26 in Constance Bay. Preparations are well underway at West Carleton Branch 616 of the Legion which annually plays host to an enthusiastic get-together of vintage snowmobile enthusiasts for an off-trail rally and show.

The day kicks off with breakfast and registration from 8-10 a.m. Riders depart any time after that for the featured attraction: the excursion to Gavan’s Hotel in Quyon, Quebec.

New this year, for the machines that are still running, is informal “grudge match” drag racing, set for 1:30 p.m. at the Point Dining Lounge. Judging in a variety of categories for the old machines takes place throughout the day with trophies awarded at 3:30 p.m.

Riders are expected from as far away as Cornwall and Pembroke according to organizer Mike O’Reilly.

THE ACCIDENTAL FARMWIFE Diana Fisher time I tried to re-introduce them to the pack.

I put a poster in the vet clinic and grocery store.

Someone called and made an appointment to see the kittens.

While I was at work, my daughter adopted out the grey and white kitten, the smaller and weaker of the two. Shortfat remained.

Again I tried to shove her outside to join the other cats in the barn. She would go and explore, but within minutes she would be back at the door, screaming for re-entry.

So now we have a house-

cat. “How did this happen?” asked the Farmer. “I don’t remember discussing this.”

Well, neither do I. It just sort of happened. I’m allergic to cats. I’m not supposed to have them in my house. But Sheila (we felt she needed a real name) adopted us. Now instead of mousing and playing with her friends all day, she entertains herself in the basement while we’re at work. When I come home I find her collection of treasures at the bottom of the stairs: a pompom from an old winter toque, an eyeball from a discarded teddy bear; a crumbled piece of duct tape from my husband’s workbench. She even has an old ratty baseball that she uses as a sort of yoga-pilates ball, rolling herself over it on the floor.

And the grooming. Sheila spends hours grooming herself every day. I’ve flea-sprayed her and flea collared her, but she continues to nibble and comb and pick and bite, constantly. She has white fur, so a flea should be pretty easy to spot upon inspection. I don’t think she has any. She has just become rather obsessive-compulsive since she became an

indoor cat.

Oh, and thanks to Bill Gooch for giving my cat a taste of Whiskas-in-the-pouch. She is now addicted. And doesn’t wish to eat anything else. The only place I have found this food is at the dollar store. Two for a dollar. And she wants at least three of these pouches a day. I also keep dry food in her bowl, because if it is empty she complains.

This is one spoiled cat.

In the spring we are hoping she will venture out-of-doors once again. Then again, we might miss her lying in wait around corners to ambush our ankles as we pass by.

The plan was that the two kittens would keep each other company while they were in the house being treated for their various viruses.

For the first month, that plan worked very well.

They came when I called, and I found that if I wore fingerless gloves I could put drops in their eyes and antibiotics in their mouths without having my hands scratched to oblivion.

The one I called Shortfat really wasn’t very sick – her eyes cleared up in a couple of days.

But she had to stay in the basement to keep the smaller, weaker grey and white kitten from feeling scared and alone.

Then, one day, the eyes cleared up and the breathing was back to normal.

The kittens were cured.

And they had no intention of going outside.

First of all, in the two months since they had come in, winter had arrived in full force.

They had not grown a coat of winter fur and they were quite shocked by the cold.

Secondly, they were now considered outsiders and threats to the other cats who put up a fight every

The free event is in Ottawa all week, buying gold, silver, antiques and collectibles. One visitor I spoke with yesterday said, “It’s unbelievable, I brought in some old coins that had been in a little cigar box for years and some old herringbone necklaces—in less than fifteen minutes I left with a check for $700. That stuff has been in my jewelry box and dresser for at least 20 years.” Another gentleman brought in an old Fender guitar his fathar had bought years ago.

The man said, “Dad had less than fifty bucks in that guitar.” The Roadshow expert that assisted him made a few phone calls and a veterinarian in Seattle, Washington bought the guitar for

I would say that there were well over 100 people in here yesterday that sold their scrap gold.”

The Roadshow continues today starting at 9am. The event is free and no appointment is needed.

If you go to the Roadshow, you can cash-in your items for competitive prices. Roadshow representatives will be available to assess and purchase your items at the Travelodge West, this week through Saturday, in Ottawa.

Jeff Parsons, President of the Treasure Hunters Roadshow commented, “Lots of people have items that they know are valuable but just don’t know where to sell them. Old toys, trains, swords,guitars, pocket watches or just about anything old is valuable to collectors. These collectors are willing to pay big money for those items that they are looking for.”

This week’s Roadshow is the best place to get connected with those collectors. The process is free and anyone can bring items down to the event. If the Roadshow experts find items that their collectors are interested in, offers will be made to purchase them. About 80% of the guests that attend the show end up selling one or more items at the event.

Province announces minimum wage to stay put The provincial government has cancelled a scheduled increase in the Ontario minimum wage.

The wage, which was supposed to go up to $10.50 this month, will remain at $10.25 after seven years of steady increases.

The decision has sparked the ire of unions and poverty groups, who note the cost-of-living continues to rise.

Retired Canadian Football League wide receiver Patrick Woodcock visited St. Michael’s Catholic School in Fitzroy last week to talk to students about the principles of sportsmanship.

“I encourage everyone to work together and not be quite so competitive when they’re in a recreational environment,” said Woodcock, who spent the day at the school with all levels of classes.

Woodcock also ran through some basic stretches and exercises with the students.

He said he really enjoys the school visits.

“It’s part of spreading the word about physical fitness and its importance.” said Woodcock.

The St. Mike’s students did a great job, says Woodcock.

And the students enjoyed the experience, too.

“That was so awesome,” said T.J. Blaskavitch.

OTTAWA POLICE SERVICE

Patrol Officers in the West Carleton area responded to 34 general calls for service from the public for the reporting period of Feb. 4 to 10.

BREAK AND ENTER Feb. 8 Opeongo Road, West Carleton: Sometime between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tue., Feb. 8, a known culprit broke into a residence on Opeongo Road and stole about $200 in change, a Lowepro messenger bag, and an Apple iPod Nano. Entry into the house was gained through an unlocked ground floor patio door.

As a result of patrol officer investigations a 16-year-old West Carleton male was charged under the criminal code for break and enter, and for breaching his conditions stemming from a prior break and enter incident.

DISPUTE Feb. 10 Carp Road, Huntley Community: A complainant reported that a group of youths became arrogant and defiant towards him after he instructed them to stay off the ice during a scheduled hockey practice session.

The youths were asked several times to avoid coming out onto the ice surface during the practice session.

SUSPICIOUS

Feb. 5 Torbolton Ridge Road, West Carleton: A complainant called police after he came across a large number of marijuana soil pots that had been deposited in a deep ditch on Torbolton Ridge Road, somewhere between Galetta and Maclarens Side Roads.

About 100 discarded pots were sighted by patrol officers and logged for future reference.

Feb. 5 Old Carp Road, Huntley Community: A complainant called police after he noticed suspicious tracks in the snow going around the rear of his property and into the forest.

The tracks were described as being something other than Ski-Doo-like and were created sometime between 4 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Feb. 5 Chats Road, Fitzroy Harbour: A suspicious vehicle was observed driving slowly up and down Chats Road and pulling in and out of the complainant’s driveway at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, The vehicle was described as a small beige Nissan Sentra.

Feb. 7 Grierson Lane, Rural South Kanata: At around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, a suspicious incident was reported to police after a station wagon-like vehicle pulled into a complainant’s driveway on Grierson Lane and remained idling for about 10 minutes before driving away.

The male driver and his passenger were noted to be making hand gestures and directly pointing at the complainant’s home; however, neither occupant exited

the vehicle.

Feb. 10 Cavanmore Road, Carp Business District: Surveillance cameras captured a lone male stealing a long extension cord from a business on Cavanmore Road, shortly before 7 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 6.

The male was observed driving into the yard and removing the 100-foot extension cord off of a piece of mechanical equipment.

Sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. on that same night, someone rummaged through an unlocked pick-up and stole a pair of Spy sunglasses, Form snowboarding boots, a black iPod Touch and a Nixon Banks watch.

In addition to the theft, the suspect spray-painted the front windshield with white paint.

Horse stable up for social media award A small West Carleton riding stable has been named alongside several internationally-recognized equestrian names as a finalist in an international competition that recognizes use of social media in promoting equine businesses. Thistle Ridge Stables is a top 10 finalist in three categories.

Thistle Ridge owner Laura Kelland May was named in the Best Use of Facebook category, a finalist in the Most Informative category as well as the Best Newcomer category alongside such names as natural horsemanship guru Pat Parelli and Thehorse.com, a popular website for equine enthusiasts. Kelland May founded Thistle Ridge Skill Builders, a series of horse show clinics to develop local horse

talent a decade ago and opened a Facebook Page two years ago.

She developed it to communicate with students and riders who want to develop their horsemanship and continues to post videos, comments and advice for riders.

May is a senior equine Canada judge, recognized steward and freelance riding coach. She has officiated all levels of equestrian horse shows from local events, to international horse shows.

She is an active member of several online mastermind groups such as Equine Marketing Made Easy and has been interviewed online as part of the Equine Teleseminar series.

May says she was surprised to be nominated alongside such well-known entities

in the equine industry.

“Considering all the international companies and trainers that have also been identified, it is wonderful to have the support of my students and colleagues and be recognized for my input into the equestrian community,” she said.

The West Carleton Snowmobile Trails Association (WCSTA) is organizing a charity poker run Saturday, Feb. 26 with proceeds going to the Snowsuit Fund.

The WCSTA will be collecting donations of new and gently used winter wear (snowsuits, hats, mitts and boots) of all sizes. Please drop them off at registration booths or bring them to the finish line after the run.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m., with the run starting at 11:30 a.m. from the Prior in Arnprior. The cost includes a $15 entry fee and $5 per hand.

The ride goes from Arnprior to JR’s in Almonte to The Point in Constance Bay. The finish line is the Kinburn Community Centre, where there will be a cash bar and music from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Food will be served at 6 p.m. There will be prizes for first, second and third place as well as for the youngest and oldest riders.

Organizers urge snowmobilers to help out a great cause and have fun on the trails.

Fish licence-free in WC this weekend Ontario’s winter free fishing fish without a licence July 2 to 10. weekend corresponds with the Family Day long weekend this year.

From Feb. 19-21, families can try ice fishing licence-free, making it an ideal time to experience the sport for the first time or try it again.

One complainant from Constance Bay reported to police that drivers were constantly ignoring the stop signs at Bayview Drive and Lane Street by driving right through the intersection.

Upon investigation by patrol officers it was quickly discovered that the complainant’s observations were correct and numerous traffic offence notices and warnings were issued.

The officer noted that the offending cars were travelling through the intersection, without stopping, at speeds of 20kph and higher.

Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act the fine for failing to obey a stop sign is $85 and three demerit points.

Gore Mutual Ontario has sponsored the Ontario high school championships since 1948.

The competition is for the longest-running trophy in high school sports in Ontario.

The winning boys and girls teams capture the coveted Gore Trophy and Gore Crystal.

Last year, the winning rinks were from London (boys) and Grimsby (girls).

The last Eastern Ontario teams to win were from Carleton Place, which swept both the boys and girls events in 2006.

Some of the province’s top teenage curlers will be in Carp this week as the Huntley Curling Club hosts the Gore Mutual Ontario high school curling championships.

The top eight boys and girls’ rinks will vie for the two titles starting today (Thursday) and concluding Saturday, Feb. 19.

The local favourite will be Chantal Allan’s Eastern Ontario girl’s champions from All Saints Catholic High School in Kanata. Allan’s rink, coached by Roger Trahan, includes vice Brittany Black, second Sam Trew and lead Katie Vances.
