A midway for food Visit FreshFest at CASO Station August 25 Committee member, Serge Lavoie, says the third annual local food festival called FreshFest is like a midway for food. “Your ticket gives you 14 coupons that allow you to wander around 12 different stations, spending them in any combination you wish,” he says. The event pairs local chefs with area farmers who work together to set up a unique tasting menu for participants to sample. Library redevelopment on schedule Curtis Street building on budget, but Elgin Mall location popular It’s half way through the eight months that the St. Thomas Public Library was planning to be out of its building on Curtis Street while it was being renovated. According to library board chair Greg Grondin at a presentation to council August 8, the project is on budget and on schedule. However, there were a few unanticipated costs, such as moving expenses and asbestos removal, which the board has

She is working with an interior designer to choose colours, materials, tiles and flooring for the building as well as re-purposing and re-finishing existing furniture and materials. She said that money donated by Dorothy Palmer last year for the Palmer Youth Library is being used to create a fun, whimsical and colourful space. “It’s going to be a place of learning but full of imagination.” Greg Grondin said the library will be moving back to the Curtis Street building in December, settling in through the winter

and hosting a grand re-opening in March. Alderman Dave Warden commented that many people will miss the Elgin Mall location because of its accessibility and parking. “Would you consider putting a satellite branch there?” he asked. “There are costs involved with that,” Greg said, “but the board may consider a satellite branch in the future.”

yet to make a decision on how to handle. Greg says the money may come from the operating budget or the library trust fund. He said the library has settled in at its temporary location at Elgin Mall and that the public has been very positive about the experience. “People like the convenience of being able to do their shopping and go to the library,” said Heather Robinson, revitalization project coordinator. “They especially like the parking.” Heather said that demolition work is now complete and that walls and drywall are going up.

Rail underpass being demolished First Avenue in St. Thomas closed until early September Motorists heading north or south on First Avenue between Wellington and Talbot Street in St. Thomas were greeted with ‘Road Closed’ signs August 9. The temporary closure of the street will allow TBR Developments to safely remove the

CASO Rail underpass bridge and for the city to restore the roadway. A detour route is directing traffic to Fairview Avenue, but local access to residents and businesses is still available. City staff anticipate the road closure will last until early September. “But the goal is to have it re-opened before September 6,” said manager of operations Edward Soldo at the August 8 council meeting.

Since the former CASO corridor is still under the control of TBR Developments, council authorized an expenditure of

$50,000 to TBR as a contribution for the removal of the CASO rail underpass. “It would cost more if we did this ourselves,” said Mayor Heather JacksonChapman. After the underpass has been removed and the adjacent lands regraded by TBR, the city will implement asphalt repairs and install a temporary sidewalk on the east side. At a future date, a major capital project by the city is planned to complete the widening of the road.

First Avenue between Talbot and Wellington has been closed to allow removal of the underpass structure.

It’s all fair You know summer’s nearly over when the fairs start opening. Aylmer Fair took place this past weekend and Shedden Fair is coming up next weekend. St. Thomas has its own version of a fall fair with the Iron Horse Festival (I think it counts because it has a midway, vendors, food events and is at the right time of year). Wallacetown has two fairs in September: an oldfashioned version at the Backus-Page House Museum with a Farm Show over Labour Day weekend and the modern fair at the end of the month. Farther afield, the Western Fair is coming to London in September and the granddaddy of them all, the Canadian National Exhibition, is revving up this weekend in Toronto. You have to admit, fairs are exciting. There’s always something weird and wonderful to be seen,

Meet the candidates Weekly News editor Dorothy Gebert is starting a series called ‘Meet the Candidates,’ exploring who’s running in the autumn provincial election and what they’re about. It may feel early for this, but it is not. The election is October 6. That’s only seven weeks away, folks. In addition, The Weekly News is sponsoring an all-candidates meeting on September 21. We’re calling it ‘Meet The Candidates’ and it’s at Fellowship Christian Reform Church on Elm Street in St. Thomas. (We are also pleased to be participating in a separate all-candidates meeting sponsored by the St. Thomas and District Chamber of Commerce in September.) Last week, Dorothy and I discussed why we are hosting yet another all-candidates meeting. There are two answers. One concerns civic engagement. When I was growing up, my family went to the CNE every year, getting up early to make the drive to the big city so we could be there when the gates opened. I know a lot of people go to fairs just for the rides, but we never had time for them. There was too much to see in the pavilions, stalls and tents, from stamp collections and fashion shows to vegetable contests and horse shows, to the latest in housewares and gardening displays. How our feet hurt at the end of the day. Even now I love going to fairs for the displays rather than the rides. It can be quite an education, especially for someone raised in the city like me. At one fair I was surprised to realize that the variety of hens and roosters is almost unlimited and that sheep stare at you blankly while goats look at you with purpose. We have been creating veterans for more than 200 years, and we will always need a Legion hall in our communities. Meet The Candidates Kathy Cornish for the New Democrat Party “I want to keep what’s in my pay cheque at the end of the day,” says Kathy Cornish, NDP candidate for Elgin-MiddlesexLondon who is running in the upcoming provincial election. She thinks a lot of people feel the same way, especially in these tough economic times. “People are hurting and the NDP really wants to help,” she says. Born in St. Thomas, Kathy has worked at Timken for the last 23 years, becoming active in the union 18 years ago, with the last five as union president. She sees it as a natural progression to run for office, giving her a wider group of people to help. “The NDP connects with me as a regular person,” she says. UN

"Boss," he says, "we're doing some heavy housecleaning at home tomorrow, and my wife needs me to help with the attic and the garage, moving and hauling stuff." "We're short-handed, Smith," the boss replies. "I can't give you the day off." "Thanks, boss," says Smith, "I knew I could count on you!"

Kathy Cornish for the New Democrat Party.

Kathy considers jobs to be one of the most critical issues of the upcoming election. “There just aren’t any. When Ford and Lear are done, it’s easy to say ‘send people to school.’ But that’s a band-aid. What happens when those people get out there?” Taxes matter the most to Kathy personally. “Look at your

Something To Think About...

As clear as mud Here's my favorite drywalling story. We were building a new church in the early 1980s with mostly volunteers. A person came to me and asked what I needed him to do one evening. Here's the conversation. "The front classroom is all drywalled and ready for mud. Can you mud?" I asked. His response, "Sure I can. I've done it lots of times." "For sure?" I inquired. "Yes" came Peter's reply and I sent him off. As he was “experienced,” I didn't think anymore about his mudding and busied myself with other things in the building. We had a terrific night of work, a lot was accomplished and we all headed home. I was the only one there the

next day, and I headed to the room my “experienced” mudder was working in. Yikes! You should have seen it. He wasn't a mudder; he was a plasterer! Thick gobs of dried, caked-on plaster covered the nail holes and joints. I know what Peter's going to be doing tonight! The evening rolled around and the volunteers arrived as usual. Peter was there, ready to work. "Peter, are you ready to apply the second coat of mud to the front classroom?" I asked. "Sure am," Peter replied and off he went. This time, I decided my “experienced” mudder might need some help. So, after a while I went to where Peter was working to see how he was doing. There he stood with a deer in the headlights look, saying: "Hmm. I think I put too much on the first coat!"

Pastor Cusick: ww.stpa.on.ca

I went to get an electric sander and suggested Peter use that. Peter worked all night getting the huge globs off. The next evening, Peter asked for his job posting and I suggested, "Are you ready to put on that second coat?" "No way," Peter replied. "I'm done mudding. Give me something else to do!" Benjamin Franklin once wrote: "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." My father-in-law and Ron Emery taught me to mud. They involved me in a slow step-bystep process, and I learned. Life is full of opportunities for you to involve others and show them. The things I know best and do best are those things that someone took the time to involve me, not just teach me. And that, is something to think about.

St.Thomas City Council Recognizing local achievements Alderman Tom Johnston asked whether local achievements in sports could be added to the Wall of Fame being planned for the Timken Centre. Current criteria for inclusion only include provincial, national and international recognition. He specifically made mention of the St. Thomas Barons and the St. Thomas Elgins. Alderman Jeff Kohler said that if the current recommendations are accepted, the committee will make recommendations to honour local achievements. He also wanted to recognize former alderman, Terry Shackleton, who came up with the idea for a Wall of Fame. Blocking roads requires permits Alderman Dave Warden asked for clarification regarding non-city trucks blocking lanes of traffic and causing safety issues. This had happened recently on First Avenue where lanes had been blocked off, no flag people or signage were in evidence and drivers took great risks going into traffic to get around. Director of environmental services, John Dewancker, said that a road occupancy permit needs to be obtained from the city. He said that if the people blocking traffic do not do this, they are open to a lot of liability. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day Ethel de la Penotiere of the fasd_Elgin Support Group rang a bell to ask council to ring the bells of city hall 9 times at 9:09pm on September 9 in order to proclaim Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day. She wished to bring attention to the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and the social, educational, mental and physical problems children face because of it. Three churches in St. Thomas will be ringing their bells to show support of the nine months pregnant women must remain alcohol free. Bowling for Boobs fundraiser Kelly Baines asked for council’s support of the second annual Bowling for Boobs event on Octo-

briefs

ber 15 at Heritage Lanes in St. Thomas. When she was 14, she lost her mother to cancer and decided to create this event to raise money for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. This year’s event has grown to two days and more teams. Mayor Heather JacksonChapman said that council has committed to two teams and hopes others will join them in supporting this cause. Water quality testing Alderman Dave Warden said that a resident, who had been experiencing low water pressure due to a watermain replacement in his neighbourhood, had phoned him saying that he had been advised to have his water tested. Director of Environmental Services, John Dewancker, said that during a watermain replacement, disinfection protocols are established to maintain water quality, and therefore residents do not need to test their water. Taxi fares high for a reason In response to a letter sent to council by Lonnie McIntyre regarding the cost of a taxi ride in St. Thomas, Murray Watson, president of Red Line Taxi, responded that costs have increased. Fuel is 9 percent higher, HST adds 13 percent, two annual safety checks

that they will reach it. As well as school supplies, Staples will be accepting cash donations, which will be used to buy supplies for the drive. Staples has put together a school supply kit that holds 10 items and can be purchased for the drive for less than $5. There is a special need for backpacks and scientific calculators in particular, as these items are more expensive than the normal pencil or eraser. A community event will be held at Staples August 27 from 12-4pm to help raise money for the drive. Boston Pizza and Wendy’s will be present, along with the fire department and many others.
