Reason to smile
The Penrith Panthers deserve congratulations for getting off the violent venue list (Reason to smile, Western Weekender December 7). Does this mean they will be stopping the personal attack ads on David Bradbury? Th is type of bullying would not be tolerated on their premises. Not so funny now
Many Australian commentators are suggesting that 2DayFM radio announcers “...Mel Greig and Michael Christian did not kill British nurse Jacintha Saldanha,” (Sunday Telegraph 9/12/12 editorial). Whilst I agree they did not intend to cause her death – that would be murder – their reckless behaviour, supposedly in the name of entertainment, resulted in the death of an innocent woman diligently doing her job. Take the motorist who drives recklessly to show off in front of his/ her friends – he/she has no intent to injure other road-users but kills an innocent pedestrian – that person is charged with manslaughter because of their reckless behaviour. Whilst I am not suggesting Greig and Christian be charged with manslaughter, their reckless behaviour deserves strong condemnation because it resulted in

the nurse’s death. For some time now, certain Australian radio and television stations have been carrying out hoaxes with the view of humiliating innocent people, generally ones conscientiously doing their job. Th is is done in the name of entertainment presumably because the perpetrators consider it funny. They do not care what psychological harm this may do to the poor embarrassed victim. It is neither funny nor clever to publicly belittle innocent people. You never know what short term or long term damage you are doing to that person’s psyche. Ironically, it seems Ms Saldanha’s death is causing Greig and Christian psychological pain for which their employers are providing counselling – 2DayFM did not consider giving Ms Saldanha counselling for her psychological pain. Perhaps the radio station and the announcers may now realise the ‘joke’ is on them and it is not too funny. Phillip Martin, St Marys . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I
t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The shops are busy, the mail box is full and the supermarket lines are getting longer. And folks it’s only going to get worse. The closer the big day gets, the more crazy everything turns. So it’s no wonder this year more and more shoppers are going online. For many, promises of free delivery, immediate dispatch and no waiting in long lines is too good to pass up. But I have to admit, for me there is nothing like physically holding a gift in my hand, making sure it’s the right size or colour and knowing that a shipping delay won’t make any difference – I get peace of mind knowing my present will defi nitely be there on Christmas Day. However, in saying that, for me it really comes down to price. If it’s a lot cheaper on the web, and is listed as ‘in stock’, then I am more willing to take the chance. But if it’s the same price I’m all about going into a store and buying the gift. I have also found a lot of stores are price matching the online offers if you can show them a photo as proof on either your phone or ipad. When it comes to food shopping, personally, I fi nd the best time to go is really early on Christmas Eve, before everyone else wakes up. At 6am in the morning you may not feel like fi lling the

Lovely effort by the community (For you, Thelma, Western Weekender December 7). We should all support the local businesses involved in this story. Those girls at St Marys Florist do a great job. Kylie Misdale, via Facebook

trolley but I can tell you it’s better than battling the crowds at midday. Besides, come lunch time on the 24th you’ll want to be sitting down enjoying the fi rst oversized meal of the week, not fighting over the last ham on the shelf. Th is year I am having the family to my house – I’m not the world’s best cook but some cold ham, hot pork and fresh prawns are hopefully easy, even for me. The other thing my family does is make our own bon bons. Instead of everyone getting a hat and bad joke we put in funny items from something silly they’ve done over the past year. To be honest this is the highlight of the day normally. A time when we all laugh uncontrollably and really do forget about the hardship of the past year. My father in law once told me though “family is like seafood – it’s great at fi rst – but the longer you have it the quicker it goes off ”. So my fi nal tip: pace yourself. Not only on the food and drink but also the family, because you want everyone to leave wanting more, not wishing they’d never come!
