Principles of Patient Education 3 credits This course focuses on the role of the nurse educator in patient, family, and community-based health education. The goal of the course is to increase the knowledge and skills nurse educators apply in the process of empowering healthcare consumers to manage their own health and disease conditions. Learning theories, principles of learning, barriers to learning, ethical and legal issues will be explored. Content will also include strategies for designing patient education, choosing appropriate instructional techniques, and evaluating learning outcomes. NUR 536. Principles of Staff Development 3 credits This course provides an opportunity to examine in depth the role of the nurse educator in a staff development position. Units of content will focus on foundations of practice, the educational process, management of offerings and programs, and roles of the staff development professional. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical principles underlying the implementation of the nurse educator role within a staff development department, as well as practical strategies for ensuring success in that role. NUR 537. Seminar on Student Problems 3 credits This course provides an opportunity for the student in the nursing education concentration to examine in depth the kinds of problems that may interfere with a nursing student’s ability to be academically successful. Units of content will focus on adjustment issues, family and relationship issues, stress and time management issues, study skills, psychological issues, and the provision of student services that enhance student educational outcomes. NUR 538. Cross Cultural Nursing Practice 3 credits with Diverse Aging Populations This course provides concepts necessary for the culturally competent nursing care of diverse geriatric clients. Demographic data related to population, growth trends, and risk of health conditions and death among elders from diverse backgrounds will be explored. Emphasis is placed on examining background and skills necessary for conducting a culturally competent geriatric assessment and applying culturally appropriate geriatric care across all healthcare settings. The role of the nurse leader will be applied in developing strategies to facilitate culturally sensitive nursing care specific to individual roles within the healthcare system. NUR 539. Collaborative Healthcare Management 3 credits of the Geriatric Client with Chronic Conditions This course provides the student with a framework of geriatric nursing practice. It presents the dynamics of aging and their effects on older persons and their health. The pathogenesis and underlying mechanisms of major chronic conditions affecting older adults will be presented and serve as a basis for advanced clinical management. Clinical problems such as incontinence, functioning capacity, falls, nutrition, cognition, skin integrity, and iatrogenic illness and their effect on decline will be explored. Current best practices will include multidisciplinary care strategies and research finding to support facilitating the collaborative healthcare management of the geriatric client across settings. NUR 545. Applied Pathophysiology in Clinical Practice 3 credits This course provides an advanced knowledge base of pathophysiologic processes underlying human illness across the lifespan. The first part of the course emphasizes the basic concepts of pathophysiology, such as the cellular level of response and immune system responses to insult or injury. The second part of the course focuses on the application of the basic concepts to body systems and disease processes. The course builds on previous principles from anatomy and physiology as well as clinical experience. It provides the opportunity to apply this knowledge to clinical
