Current healthcare systems offer challenges to nurse managers related to creating healthy work environments, increasing patient safety, improving health information management, responding proactively to nursing shortages and other staffing issues, preparing staff for shared governance, developing effective relationships with regulatory agencies, ensuring values-based human resource management and financial management, and meeting the mandate to improve patient care outcomes. To address these challenges, nurse managers must possess strong management and leadership competencies in order for best practice outcomes to take place. The purpose of this course is to provide the nurse administrator an opportunity to explore today’s issues in nursing management and leadership, as described in current literature, in order to implement evidence-based solutions and create best practice environments for nursing in the future. NUR 549. Health Literacy and Health Disparity 3 credits This course explores current United States Statistics on health literacy and health disparities. The critical role of the nurse advocate in keeping patients safe throughout their encounters with the health care system is examined, including identification of the most vulnerable populations. Avoidance of cultural incompetence and promotion of cultural proficiency is emphasized. Research findings on social determinants of health and poor health outcomes among racial and ethnic minorities will be explored. Strategies for addressing low health literacy are included. An overview of approaches to deliver culturally sensitive care utilizing cultural assessment tools for planning care such as the sic Cultural Phenomena Model will be provided. Examination of the Healthy People 2010 framework, which challenges individuals, communities, and professionals to take specific steps to ensure good health for all, will be included as a guide to improving population health. NUR 565. Nursing Education Practicum 3 credits This course is designed to provide an opportunity for nursing education students to experience the role of nurse educator in selected healthcare delivery and/or educational environments. This experience focuses specifically on synthesis, application, and evaluation of concepts of education, adult learning principles, and technology as the related to education, leadership, and management skill sets required of nurse educators; and ethics and liability issues related to education in a variety of environments. The student is paired with a mentor having knowledge and expertise in nursing education concepts. Twelve (12) class hours and thirty-five (35) practicum hours are required for completion of the course. Students should have completed nursing education theory courses prior to enrolling in the practicum experience. NUR 566. Nursing Administration Practicum 3 credits This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students choosing the nursing administration concentration to apply leadership/management concepts in a selected healthcare delivery environment. Students will work with a mentor who will assist the student to experience the role of a nurse administrator in a selected healthcare delivery environment. Specifically, the course emphasizes opportunities to analyze, assess, implement, and evaluate concepts of organizational culture; leadership/management skill sets and competencies needed to effect change in organizations; assessment, implementation, and evaluation of organizational outcomes; strategic planning and goal setting in organizations; allocation of human and financial resources; computer technology in healthcare systems; and communication, ethics, and legal issues in nursing administration. There are twelve (12) classroom hours and thirty-five (35) practicum hours required in this course. Students should have completed the theory courses in the nursing administration concentration prior to enrolling in the practicum experience (BUS 517, BUS 575, and BUS 587). NUR 567. Geriatric Nurse Specialist Practicum 3 credits This capstone clinical course in the geriatric nursing sequence provides the opportunity for the student to apply advanced geriatric nursing knowledge and skills in diverse settings and to expand the level of expertise in a selected area of advanced nursing practice. Under the guidance of a faculty member and master’s prepared preceptor, students will implement a self-designed learning contract that will facilitate meeting professional goals in geriatric nursing. Clinical experiences that are consistent with program and learner objectives are individually planned wherever possible. NUR 568. Advanced Critical Care Concepts 3 credits This course provides the graduate student in nursing education or nursing administration with advanced knowledge, advanced nursing care skills, critical thinking skills, and mentoring skills necessary for the roles of nurse educator and staff/student resource in the critical care unit. A body system approach is used to review the disease processes commonly seen in patients admitted to the critical care units of today’s hospitals. The anatomy and normal physiology of each body system will be reviewed, and
