A first kiss, a lost love, a longed-for baby, childhood heroes, a proposal, a dance, a chance encounter – where did it happen and how happy did it make you feel on a scale from 1 to 10?

Mon 29 & Tue 30 Apr 7.45pm Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 1hr Age 14+

Like some backroom carnival ride lo-fi scifi pleasure machine, AMUSEMENTS is an intensely sensorial and breathlessly seductive one-woman headphone-theatre spectacular that asks what exactly we might want from our entertainment, and what it might want from us. With the audience plugged wirelessly into its beating heart, the performance is both a hypnotic dance towards the limits of pleasure and an unsettling voyeuristic tribute to our private desires. It is an escapist's wet dream which grapples sleepily along the way with the dizzying highs and terrifying boredoms of the early 21st century: the soporific hum of mass communication; the television’s warm embrace.

A show about how an unlikely pair of underdogs became a beauty queen and a championship show dog.

Still Life An Audience with Henrietta Moraes Fri 3 May 5pm & 7.45pm Sat 4 May 12pm & 4pm Mead Gallery £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 65mins Age 16+ (contains nudity) Watch, listen and draw the hedonistic model and muse to Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Henrietta Moraes’ itinerant and rackety life was sustained by the tolerance of friends, oiled by alcohol and fuelled by an astonishing variety of drugs. In this award-winning play, Sue MacLaine captures Moraes’ characteristic wit and candour, regaling her life as a hazy poem and recreating poses from her illustrious career. As the performance progresses the line between subject and object, artist and model, public and private, blurs. Through drawing and listening, the audience engages in seeing beyond the naked female form to the woman within. “It changes the nature of looking, and is like a reclamation of sorts…the meaning of Still Life is discovered not in the words but simply in "letting the hand do what the eye sees". Interesting stuff.” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian Drawing materials provided or bring your own.

How much is beauty worth?

The sell-out hit of the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe from one of Europe’s hottest theatre companies to explode out of Belgium since Ontroerend Goed.

Can I have a glass of milk?

BigMouth

Valentijn Dhaenens has received universal critical acclaim and been described as a one-man powerhouse for his thrilling and virtuoso performance in BigMouth. Using fragments of well-known and lesser known speeches, he shows that in 2500 years, the tricks of the trade have hardly changed, and that absolute truth doesn’t exist, it’s just a pretty lie for those who aspire to power or just the hand of their beloved. "Brilliant ... a fascinating experience."  The Guardian On the Couch - Wed 22 May, see pg. 15 for details T. Post Show Talk Tue 21 May

What will people pay for an air guitar on eBay? These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture about value. Daniel Bye's whistle-stop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic and often tendentious but always a joy to watch. Comic, provocative, and possibly a tiny bit sad, this show is a must if you've ever wondered about the difference between the price of an object and its value. And you get a free glass of milk. Tue 11 & Wed 12 Jun 7.45pm Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 70mins Age 15+ At five years old Andy and his brother snuck down stairs, after their parents had gone to bed, and taped the film Predator off the TV. They would watch the film religiously thereafter and began creating their own version. What started out as a scene-forscene re-creation soon turned into their own re-imagining. Unfortunately they never managed to finish what they had started. So here’s Andy’s chance! With a little bit of your help Andy will finish off what’s been 20 years in the making, using some of the same techniques he and his brother started with, as well as bringing to life and realising the fantasy that he wished they were able to achieve in 1991. So please, sit down and join Andy at his table, as you play with remote control cars, action men, puppets and your own imaginations to complete your own version of the film Predator and finally finish off what Andy started when he was five. Moscow, January 1945: as Sergei Prokofiev waits, baton poised, to begin his new Fifth Symphony, every gun in Moscow thunders out in ear-splitting salute. Prokofiev’s Fifth was forged in the fires of war: a symphony of iron and steel, dedicated to “the greatness of the human spirit”. And from serene beginning to headlong finish, it’s still one of 20th Century music’s most thrilling adventures. Vasily Petrenko has this music in his blood; already acclaimed for his gripping Shostakovich recordings, expect him to deliver some serious voltage at the climax of this all-Russian programme with the Philharmonia. But there’s love amongst the ruins, too, with Tchaikovsky’s hugely popular, supremely romantic First Piano Concerto – and no better soloist than the masterly Nikolai Lugansky, a pianist who combines old-school keyboard fireworks with truly poetic insights. Guns, roses, and epic emotions – Liadov’s magical tone-poem will feel like the calm before the storm. Maybe it’s the life-and-death brass playing; maybe it’s the raw intensity of the strings. Maybe it’s the fact that every single player puts body and soul into this music. But one thing’s for sure: once you’ve heard Tchaikovsky played by a Russian orchestra, everything else seems tame. In the final concert of our season, we’re thrilled to welcome a true legend, conductor Pavel Kogan, for the greatest of all Russian symphonies. With its delirious highs and pitch- black despair, Tchaikovsky’s Sixth is never less than overwhelming; but tonight’s performance should be in a class of its own. And that goes double for Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto, performed tonight by Nina Kotova, a player born and bred in the great Russian tradition. Two of Khachaturian’s most tuneful hits should whet the palate nicely – but trust us, when you hear the way Kogan and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra play them, you won’t be thinking of The Onedin Line. Haydn Quartet in D Op.76 No.5 Britten Quartet No 3 Op.94 Schumann Quartet in A Op.41 No.3

“I’ve been composing so much that it seems uncanny” declared Robert Schumann. “I should like to sing myself to death, like a nightingale”. And in his Second Quartet, he sang his heart out, in music that bubbles over with freshness, warmth and the irresistible joie de vivre of a man in love.

Chaconne from Violin Partita No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004 String Quartet no 2 in C, Op.36 Fantasia upon one note in F major arranged for string quintet

The Coull Quartet are joined for this morning concert by the wonderful violinist Dave Le Page. Come and enjoy a cup of coffee with them and soak up the atmosphere in the Helen Martin Studio.

Death in Venice… at the end of his life, Benjamin Britten turned Prospero, and dissolved his enchantments in the shimmering waters of his Third Quartet. He called its finale La Serenissima, and it’s hard to believe that such ravishing music was being written in the 1970s.

Benjamin Britten unleashed the same energy in his bracing wartime First Quartet – every bit the work of a young genius let off the leash. It’s an exuberant start to the Coull’s Britten birthday celebrations, and the perfect foil to the wit and wisdom of Haydn’s glorious late quartet.

But hear it for yourself, at the still centre of an evening that opens with a glowing, sparkling surge of imagination from the 65 year old Haydn, and ends with the delirious lovesongs of Robert Schumann’s ardent Third Quartet. Young love, great conversation, and the biggest questions of all: the Coull Quartet proves, once again, that four players can say more than the mightiest orchestra.

The Siege of Calais (L’assedio di Calais) Donizetti

Conductor James Burton

Conductor Michael Rosewell

This high energy, laugh-a-minute comedy about making mistakes in love is one of Mozart’s most famous operas. In one day, two pairs of fiancés are parted, and new fiancés found – or so it seems. A comedy of innocence and experience, funny and unnerving, touching and satirical.

In this compelling drama set in the Italian port of Genoa, the title character is a former pirate who returns to the city to become its leader. Verdi’s depiction of the shimmering Mediterranean is delightful as are the characters he creates, from Simon, the roughhewn buccaneer (sung by Craig Smith), to his spiteful adversary, his own father-in-law, Fiesco (Keel Watson).

Paul Higgins’ new period production will be sung by a remarkable cast, including Laura Mitchell, Paula Sides, Richard Mosley-Evans and Kitty Whately (Rosina in ETO’s The Barber of Seville in 2012). T. 6.30pm Pre-concert talk Thu 9 May FREE

This is one of the biggest productions undertaken by ETO and a rare chance to see this little-toured masterpiece outside of London.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles Sat 11 May 7.30pm 2hrs (inc interval) Conductor Jeremy Silver Donizetti’s rarely performed epic tells the story of the Burghers of Calais, who offered up their lives to save their citizens from the English army. The opera includes poignant scenes between the young couple at the heart of the drama (Paula Sides and mezzo Helen Sherman) and between the leader of the city (Eddie Wade) and his anguished followers. Meanwhile, at the gates, the triumphant King Edward III (Cozmin Sime) shouts for blood. ETO’s new production features designs by Faroese artist Samal Blak, inspired by the siege of Stalingrad. Conductor Benjamin Hamilton Following unprecedented demand, 5-star reviews and a sell-out run in January, Opera Warwick’s “immensely fun” production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola returns more orange, obscene and outrageous than ever!

A brand new opera for children aged 6-12 and families, packed with music, drama, design, lots of science, and one of the greatest stories about a real animal ever told. In the space race of 1957, which dog will Russia find to sit on top of the Sputnik 2 rocket, and will the systems be in place to bring the dog back alive?

Giving the Cinderella story a “deliciously garish” 21st-century Essex makeover, this vibrant production features a cutting-edge English translation, live video projection, full orchestra, fierce dance cast and a considerable amount of bronzer. Brace yourselves for a playful adaptation that'll keep you smiling long past the stroke of midnight!

mead gallery Thu 2 May – Sat 22 Jun Open Mon – Sat 12 noon to 9pm FREE ENTRY Closed Sundays and Bank Holidays

For latest news, events and exhibitions visit our website www.meadgallery.co.uk and follow us @warwickartsmead Mead Gallery Katie Paterson

From transmitting Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata to the moon and back, to providing a live phone line to a melting glacier, much of Katie Paterson’s work uses everyday technologies – from doorbells to record players – to make a connection between humanity and vast, intangible natural phenomena. Strangely intimate and inherently romantic, her work provides a poetic examination of the origins of time and space which is both understated and monumental. Curated by Filipa Oliveira and Aldo Rinaldi, Katie Paterson: In Another Time is the largest, most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work in the UK to date. Co-produced by the Mead Gallery with Fundação Leal Rios, Lisbon; La Casa Encendida, Madrid and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the exhibition will be adapted at each gallery to present individual, nuanced interpretations of Paterson’s practice. Works presented at the Mead Gallery include letters of condolence for the death of stars, an archive of darkness from throughout the universe, and light bulbs specially created to simulate moonlight.

Artists’ Plans for Sustainability Joseph Beuys, Carole Collet, N55, Nils Norman, Lucy + Jorge Orta, Marjetica Potrcˇ Joseph Beuys, Capri Battery, Scottish National Gallery Of Modern Art, Purchased with assistance from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Art Fund, 2002.

In just a few more decades, the world’s population will exceed 9 billion, 70% of which will live in cities. This exhibition brings together artists’ plans for innovative and radical solutions to a more sustainable and resilient way of life. One of the first artists to examine sustainability was Joseph Beuys, a founder of the green movement in Germany in the 1960s. His famous multiple, Capri Battery, is here joined by the work of contemporary artists who propose a range of solutions to issues such as the waste and exploitation inherent in a textile industry founded in the Industrial Revolution, the hostility of the built environment to more sustainable behaviours, political divisions, food waste and the social and economic problems of Venice, a city faced with a binary catastrophe of rising sea levels and sinking land. Visitors will be able to transfer some of the ideas to their own communities and homes and see how the Mead Gallery itself has endeavoured to limit the carbon impact of making this exhibition.

Alasdair Hopwood: The False Memory Archive May – Jun Dr. Kim Wade is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Warwick. Her PhD research investigated the role of photographic evidence in the creation of false childhood memories and more recently, she has focused on how people determine whether a memory is real or fictitious. Part of this research has involved using photographic evidence to embed the false memory of a hot air balloon ride in her subjects. Since 2002, artist Alasdair Hopwood has been working under the collective pseudonym, ‘WITH.’ Under this guise he has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and overseas, including major galleries such as Tate Britain, The Hayward Gallery, The ICA and The Victoria and Albert Museum. For his most recent project, Hopwood has been working with scientific researchers in the UK and USA – including Kim Wade – to explore the phenomenon of false memory. Over two months, films, images and documentation relating to Alasdair Hopwood’s work with Kim Wade may be encountered across the University campus, centred around an exhibition in the Ramphal Building. A limited free bar will be available in the Mead Gallery throughout the evening. Everybody is welcome and no booking is required. The evening will include:

7pm: Live performance of Earth-Moon-Earth Earth-Moon-Earth (E.M.E) is a form of radio transmission whereby messages are sent in Morse code from earth, reflected from the surface of the moon, and then received back on earth. The moon reflects only part of the information back – some is absorbed in its shadows, ‘lost’ in its craters. For Katie Paterson’s work, Earth-Moon-Earth, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata was translated into Morse code and sent to the moon via E.M.E. Returning to earth fragmented by the moon's surface, it was re-translated into a new score, the gaps and absences becoming intervals and rests. In this rare live performance, the 'moon–altered' score will be played by pianist, Samuel Foster, on one of the Warwick Arts Centre’s grand pianos.

7.30pm: 100 Billion Suns Gamma Ray Bursts are the brightest explosions in the universe, which burn with a luminosity 100 billion times than that of our sun. To herald the opening of In Another Time, Katie Paterson’s 100 Billion Suns - a confetti cannon, containing 3,216 pieces of paper corresponding to each of these cosmic events - will be fired in Warwick Arts Centre.

Henrietta Moraes’ itinerant and rackety life was sustained by the tolerance of friends, oiled by alcohol and fuelled by an astonishing variety of drugs. The Guardian’s obituary, after her death in 1999, gave her profession as “Bohemian”. In this award-winning play, Sue MacLaine captures Moraes’ characteristic wit and candour, regaling her life as a hazy poem and recreating poses from her illustrious career. Fence Collective is a loose-knit amalgam of singer-songwriters, musicians, bands and electronic artists who collaborate with one another on record, as well as on stage. Although their music isn’t always strictly ‘folk’ in the traditional sense, the Collective’s tendency to hand-down and share songs with one another is very much in the folk spirit. For this show James Yorkston, The Pictish Trail & Seamus Fogarty join forces for a special tour - collaborating on stage, sharing songs, a laugh and some blether.

Fatal Distraction is an award-winning, hilarious, mind-blowing and multi-5-star theatrical experience. Marvel as Chris does things no human should be able to do, reads minds, controls coincidence and wonders whether love is the only real bit of magic in this world.

“Because I’m still considered to be quite a catch and because your town is noted for its heterosexuals on the cusp, there’s bound to be stiff competition”, says Julian. “Therefore I’ll be hosting ruthless elimination games. You can be sure of one thing. By the end of the evening, we’ll all be celebrating my new partnership.”

With cult television hit Doctor Who celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, join us for a screening of the ‘orphaned’ episodes. Due to BBC regulations in the 1960s, many episodes of television and radio programmes were routinely wiped, leaving behind ‘orphaned’ episodes.

When Gonzo starts receiving mysterious messages via his breakfast cereal, he and the Muppets embark on a journey to outer space to find his long-lost family.

These episodes are from three storylines featuring the first two incarnations of the Doctor (William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton) from 1966 and 1967: The Celestial Toymaker, The Evil of the Daleks and The Abominable Snowmen.
