8 7 Re-Heating: After preliminary cooling and finishing, castings are heat treated up to 1,700 degrees [7] to more evenly distribute the elements in the metal and relieve stress points. Controlling the cooling process is critical: Castings that cool quickly have a finer microstructure and hence greater strength. So after heat treating, castings are “quenched� [8] in 85-degree water. Each casting is inspected and magnaflux tested for quality; if the part passes, it is finish-machined, painted, and [9] prepared for shipping.
