2013 Football Playoffs Championship month was filled with great plays, memorable moments and surprising results. Here’s a quick look back at the teams, players and coaches that made this a season we’ll never forget.

Trojans Complete Perfect Year In a game that has produced fantastic finishes, Jenks left little doubt in this one.

In a way, the Class 6A state championship game – between familiar foes Jenks and Union - was typical of the down-to-the wire contests that have dotted the rivalry. But reality quickly set in after a first quarter in which the two teams combined for 35 points and over 300 yards.

18

“That first quarter seemed like three days,” said Jenks head coach Allan Trimble, who won his 11th state title in 18 years in the Trojans’ 3822 victory. “The roller coaster ride of the first

Cameron Booty quarter was every bit the way the games have gone in the past.”

But by halftime, the Trojans, who finished 14-0 and undefeated for the fourth time in Trimble’s tenure, held a commanding 3114 cushion. For Trimble, it was an emotional win unlike any other.

“I’m partial to this class because my daughter Tylar is in this class,” he said. “This is the first class to have gone through Jenks the entire way since I was hired. It’s a special group.

“These seniors aren’t just teammates, they are brothers. There have been a bunch of good ones over the years, but this class is a really special one.”

Dylan Harding There were numerous player highlights to go around. From Steven Parker’s stat line (215 all-purpose yards, a touchdown reception and an interception) to Cameron Booty’s 216 all-purpose yards (176 rushing yards, 2 TDs) and even sophomore quarterback Cooper Nunley, who was 11-of16 passing for 206 yards, two touchdowns and an eight-yard touchdown run. And don’t forget about the fake punt pass from Tyler Ridener on a fourth-and-13 from Jenks’ 22-yard line that set up Ridener’s eventual field goal of 24 yards. Union grabbed a 7-0 lead on the fourth play of the game when quarterback Mason Farquhar raced 56 yards.

Jeffery Mead Jenks answered with a Booty 12yard run followed by a Parker 41-yard touchdown pass and another Booty touchdown run to go up 21-7. The Redskins cut the lead to 21-14 on Justin Silmon’s 17yard touchdown to close out the 35-point first quarter.

Jenks tacked on 10 points in the second quarter on the field goal and an 8-yard score from Nunley for a 17-point halftime lead. The Trojan defense was effective stopping the run with Marquise Overton, Tyler Thomas, Byrl Foster and linebacker Chris Lilly. Luke Thompson had several quarterback pressures and tackles from the end position. Parker moved from safety to corner allowing sophomore DECEMBER 2013

“Sheldon Barnes, Hunter Goins, Stewart White, Greg Reilly and Clayton Esmond played great and so much better the last few games, “Trimble said. “Our tight ends, Matt Cloud and Ty Yeates, also played well.” But this night clearly belonged to the Jenks seniors, Trimble said. “Austin Casillas probably tore his ACL in the BA game,” said the coach. “He didn’t go see a doctor or miss a game after he

Carson Meier gets injured returning a punt. He played with a torn ACL for five or six games.

“Harding couldn’t raise his right arm above his shoulder. Steven (Parker) has been nursing a bad hamstring for weeks. Trent Taber played with a broken arm. Player after player was in braces and nursing injuries. Our senior class, they just wanted it. They put the team ahead of themselves."

DEC 2013 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship.Oklahoma@ VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Shaelyn Ward Lincoln Christian Lincoln Christian Lady Bulldogs sophomore forward is the Mazzio’s Female Athlete of the Month. Through her team’s first four games Ward averaged 15.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Ward’s season high for points came on Dec. 10 when she poured in 25 in a loss to Cascia Hall. Ward also has recorded one double-double this season finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Lady Bulldogs 52-26 win over Okay in the opening game of the season.

ALL-YOU-CAN

Bryce Carter Cascia Hall A standout on the baseball field Cascia Hall’s Bryce Carter has been making waves on the hardwood this year. Helping the Commandos start the season 2-0 is just a small reason why the senior guard is the Mazzio’s Male Athlete of the Month. In a hard-fought game against Lincoln Christian, Carter was at his best scoring 21 points. Carter was also deadly from three-point range in the game against Lincoln Christian hitting four long-range bombs.

Boys Mitchell Solomon had a nice junior season in which he averaged 15.7 points and 8.9 rebounds. But once the 6-foot-9 Bixby center showed he could hit the occasional 3-pointer and be a consistent scorer in AAU Basketball, his stock soared. Solomon hit 13-of-25 3-pointers in the Great American Shootout in Duncanville, Texas, landing on the radar of numerous D-1 programs. Oklahoma State was one of the first to offer and Solomon signed with his parent’s alma mater in the early signing period. “He set it on fire,” said Solomon’s AAU coach Rod Thompson. “I remember telling his parents two years earlier that he could be really good and that they wouldn’t have to pay for college.” Scott Padek and Thompson agree what sets Solomon apart is his ability to post up, pop out for a 3-pointer or hit the baby hook from either side. Said Padek, “We always 24

Mariah Knox knew if we could get him to shoot the 3, he had a chance to be recruited. I always thought he had the potential to be really good.” Solomon has a stellar supporting cast in seniors Camden Selvidge, Joey Fiser and R.L. York. Selvidge, 6-5 forward, averaged 7.1 points and 6.2 rebounds last season. Joey Fiser, 6-1 guard, averaged 5.7 points and York, a 6-1 point guard, averaged 3.3. Also look for 5-11 forward freshman Will Fiser to be in the rotation. “All four of our seniors are our best players,” Padek said. “Beyond this, we are untested.”

Speaking of tests, the Spartans will get an early one on Dec. 3 when they help Jenks open its new facility in the season opener. Girls

Knox is comfortable with facing the basket at the forward spot or playing with her back to the basket at center. Seniors Kara Stead and Sydney Stout will compliment Knox in the frontcourt. The 5-9 Stead and the 5-11 Stout are capable of playing post as well. Look for 5-2 senior Madison Curley to operate the offense at point guard.

“We will have a good mix of young talent and great leadership from our seniors,” said Stewart, who owns a 15381 career record. “We are extremely excited about this group of kids. We will be a ‘Hard Work U’ team. In the league we play in (Frontier) we will definitely have to outwork all of our opponents. We have a great group of kids coming back and we believe that if they are all on the same page we will be in the mix at playoff time.”

foremost, the Hornets will have to find a way to replace the scoring of Juwan Parker, who scored 21.8 points while leading Washington to the Class 6A quarterfinals.

The Hornets will look to run an uptempo offense and pressure man-toman defense with the return of senior guards Kevin Sims, Hollis Mitchell and Myles Tease, all starters a year ago. Junior Chris Miller, a 6-foot-6 forward, will be an imposing frontcourt figure. Joining him in the frontcourt will be 6-2 sophomore Tariq Bitson. “We had a great summer and fall and are looking forward to putting it all together this season,” Redmond said. With so many returning starters, Redmond will have the opportunity to ease in members of a talented sophomore class, including Bitson. Girls

The defending Class 6A state champions suffered heavy graduation losses and return just one starter. But 15th year head coach Annette Kennedy, who has 328-149 record overall in her career, is optimistic that with some time, this talented group of young players will mature into another playoff team by season’s end. Headlining the roster are four juniors and a sophomore. Makenzie Ellis, Kendriana Washington, Cori Williams and Aubrey Thomas make up the talented junior class. Ellis is a 6-foot-1 forward/post, who averaged more than nine points a game last year. Williams, at 5-5, and sophomore Aysia Evans, at 5-6, are both listed as guard/forward combo players. Look for the two to bring solid play to the backcourt, alongside the 5-5 Thomas. Ellis, Williams and Washington all have championship experience, which should help in this transition year. The Lady Hornets will continue to wreak havoc on opposing teams with their stingy man-to-man defense. “This is a young, athletic, high intensity team that will need a full season to develop their roles,” Kennedy said. “I’m excited to help this energetic team establish themselves in the high standards of BTW tradition.”

Washington is a 5-11 post and a nice compliment to Ellis in the frontcourt.

During the offseason, Wallace had the opportunity to return to his alma mater as an assistant on Rusty Stecker’s staff. Boys Coach Tommy Nolan’s squad is coming off a tough year in which the team was winless. The good news for Nolan and the Zebras is that they return a host of players with varsity experience. The rebuilding effort begins around senior guard Hunter Garroutte. The 5-foot-9 guard is a proven perimeter player. Senior T.J. Cantrell’s supporting cast is highlighted by junior guard Josh Holliday, who sat out last season after transferring from Wright Christian. Wallace has high hopes for his 5-8 guard. “Josh is going to be good,” Wallace said. Other players to keep an eye on are seniors Rodney Gaulden, Kaleb Waymire, Tanner Gregurich and Tyler Ferguson. “I feel like we have four guys who can shoot the ball, which will create havoc for other teams,” Wallace said. “We will play an uptempo style of basketball with pressure defense. The Lady Zebras managed 13 victories a year ago under first-year head coach Stephanie Shaw. And after a year of adjustment under Shaw, the team must adjust to life in Class 6A. Shaw has a nucleus of talent to build around, beginning with seniors Kaleigh Cox and Anna McGuire. Sophomores Bailey Steckline and Monica Taylor saw substantial playing time as freshmen a year ago. Boys There seems to be plenty of talent for coach Clay Martin to build around this season. Trojan fans may have to be a little patient early on, as a couple of key players are in the midst of a playoff run in football which will cause Steven Parker and Cameron Booty to join the team late. That will give sophomore guard T.J. Washington, younger brother of former Jenks girls standout Jessica Washington, a chance to step into the limelight. Washington is coming off a freshman year in which he averaged 6.5 points and 4.8 assists

per game. Parker averaged 10 points and 3.1 assists a year ago. Other players to watch include seniors Connor Houston and Taft Fling. “We will have lots of guards on the floor,” Martin said. “This is the most speed we’ve ever had.” Girls The biggest task facing Jenks second-year head coach Mandy Nightingale is finding a replacement for All-State star Jessica Washington, a VYPE Top 100 player last year. Washington has moved on to North Carolina and the Lady Trojans are taxed with finding their go-to player this year. The Lady Trojans are looking to make a return to the state tournament after falling short a year ago. Jenks returns just one starter but has a host of players with varsity experience. Seniors guards Harper Peterson, Callie Crase and Taylor Nissley will provide the leadership along with junior guards Mackinzie Phipps and Jensen Prince. Peterson

Boys After 16 seasons and three state championships, Eric Savage opted to leave the security of a strong 5A program at Memorial to beginning a new odyssey at Sand Springs. Savage, the father of three boys, wanted the opportunity to coach his own boys, thus the decision to move. He inherits a program that has struggled in recent years. Savage has a couple of solid players to build around in seniors Ashton Palmer, Tyler Tolbert and Josh Lattie. Palmer, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 16 points for the Sandites in 2012-13. Talbert and Lattie return after averaging four points per game. Other players to watch include 6-foot-5

“I’m looking forward to beginning a new era at Sand Springs, said Savage. “I’m excited to bring a new attitude and style of play.” Girls

Armed with two VYPE Top 100 players in Shawn Olden and Jeffery Mead, plus 6-foot-7 Carson Meier, Union looks as though they could have a deep playoff run ahead. Boys The Comets return a lot of experience in the backcourt, which will most likely have to carry the team until the frontcourt players adjust. Matt Craig headlines the returnees. The 6-foot3 senior combo player is one of four returning starters. He is coming off a junior season in which he scored over 11 points a game. J.D. Limes, a 6-2 combo player and Daniel Smith, a 6-1 guard, are both returning seniors who averaged 5.9 and 5.5 points, respectively. Josh Limes also is a returning starter. “We will be more athletic this season,” Ward said. “Hopefully we will be able to limit turnovers. We want to play more of a controlled offense. “We need to establish our game and stay with the plan we choose for each game.”

Cagney Roberson Boys Head coach Scott Norris has a lot of young talent as they try to build on last season’s success in which the team won 21 games. The key for the Tigers is getting the young players to understand their roles and be committed to that role, Norris said. Junior guard Caleb Norris will be asked to fill the scoring void left by older brother Zach Norris, who averaged 14.7 points a year ago. Caleb returns after averaging seven points as a sophomore. The Tigers will look to build their frontcourt play around junior Cagney Roberson (8.0 ppg/ 6.0 reb) and sophomore Jake Ross (6 ppg, 4 reb) at the forward spots. Also look for Kelandus Culton to be in the rotation at guard. “We have a young team that has to continue to learn how to play hard every possession,” Norris said. “I believe we have a chance to be better than we have been but we have to mature. We have a great mix of kids and should have a strong perimeter game. We have a great threat inside with Ross. Caleb will have to take on the role of scoring more.” Girls

Second-year head coach Ron Ward will continue the rebuilding effort around a trio of returning starters in 2013-14. Seniors Miranda Elliott and Courtney Haas will look to direct the team’s rebuilding efforts. The two guards will anchor the backcourt play for Coweta. Boys Cardinals won an uncharacteristic four games a year ago. But don’t expect East Central to stay down long. Lynwood Wade III takes over at the helm following the departure of Beau Wallace to Broken Arrow. Wade will look to three veteran players for leadership as the team adapts to a new system. Seniors D.C. Pitts, a 6-foot guard, and 6-foot-4 forward Johnta Lewis and junior 6-foot-4 forward Jonathan Johnson will ask to shoulder both leadership and offensive responsibilities. Johnson burst on the scene as a standout defensive end

in football, drawing interest from Oklahoma. Wade also has a trio of underclassmen who should contribute significantly in juniors Jeffery Pittman and Jaylen Cotton and freshman Burke Putnam. When asked what Cardinal fans should expect this year, Wade said simply, “Improvement.” Girls

After reaching the Class 5A title game three years in a row, East Central’s season ended with a semifinal loss to eventual state champion Deer Creek a year ago. Known for stellar guard play over the past four years, the Cardinals will look to frontcourt and VYPE Top 100 standout Sharayla Brown this season. Brown, a 6-foot-3 forward/ post player averaged seven points, six rebounds and four blocked shots as a sophomore. The venerable star is being recruited by OU, Arkansas, TU, Memphis, Arizona and Wichita State. Marcia Reed, the team’s leading returning scorer is also drawing a lot of interest from Arkansas, ORU, TU and Texas State, will join Brown in comprising one of the most dominant frontcourts in 5A. Reed, a 6-foot1 junior, registered 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks last season. Janee Arnold and Chantel Mack will be equally dominating in the backcourt once Mack returns from a knee injury. Arnold chipped in six points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists a year ago. The bench is deep with senior Deshawnta Lyday, juniors Lauren Billie (4.0 ppg, 3 steals) Delaysha McCall and Ashlin Mead and sophomore Alexis Payton. “This team should be more disciplined in the way they attack other teams,” Mack said. “They will be more patient and will look to feed (our) big’s (players). We will do what we always do – get after you. And hopefully we will get our starting point guard Chantel Mack, back in January from a torn ACL. “If our kids play up to their abilities this team should go back to the state Fin als if we don’t have any more injuries.”

Memorial Chargers

MikeQuan Deane Boys Defending 5A state champion Memorial is looking to defend its 2013 title behind point guard Demari Edwards. The 5-foot11 senior averaged nine points, four assists and three rebounds. Edwards scored 15 points in the championship game over McGuinness. Bobby Allison takes over the coaching reins following the departure of Eric Savage. The Chargers have good size in the frontcourt with 6-foot-4 forward MikeQuan Deane (8.0 ppg, 7 reb), VYPE Top 100 6-8 power forward A.J. Cockrell (4.0 ppg, 2 reb) and 6-5 forward Devante Kemp (4.0 ppg, 2.0 reb). Look for senior forward R.J. Diggs to be an impact player after averaging 11 points last season. Other players who are expected to contribute significantly include Jalen Smith and Alex Voskuhl Staab. Memorial will be tested mid-season

“We return two starters and seven returning lettermen,” Allison said. “We have to continue to play hard, smart, unselfish basketball and focus on getting better every day and enjoy the process.” Girls

Armed with the 2013 Class 5A’s leading scorer, look for Memorial to be in the mix come playoff time. Faith Ihim, a 5-foot9 guard/forward combo and VYPE Top 100 shooting star, averaged 23 points and 12 rebounds a game off a team that went 14-12 and reached the first round of the state tournament. Amiri Durant, a speedy 5-foot-2 point guard, is back to run the offense. The junior gives the Chargers a perimeter scoring threat after she averaged 10 points a game a year ago. Sarah Short, a 5-foot-10 forward, returns to the frontcourt where she averaged six points and five rebounds. Chelsea Battiest, a 5-foot-6 guard, also returns to the starting lineup. Memorial fans might want to keep an eye on junior Kayci Reed and Shantay Sells. Reed is another perimeter scoring threat while Sells could be a nice addition to the frontcourt. “We are looking forward to a strong season behind the leading scorer and rebounder in our conference and Class 5A Faith Ihim,” head coach Rabu Leyva said. “Having made it to state two out of the past three years, we are looking to hopefully return and win some games at state. Amiri Durant is one of the best ball handlers in state will relieve some of the focus off of Faith. In addition, Sarah Short has blossomed into a solid post player.”

Boys Third-year head coach Joshua McGee has three starters back in addition to several returning players with varsity experience. Headlining the returnees is junior guard Ze’Quan Randles. The 5-foot-10 Randles averaged 12 points a game a year ago. Senior Emmanuel Hilton brings back a 9.0 scoring average while junior Joshua Cavalier, who chipped in two points a game. Other players who should figure into the Rangers’ scheme are seniors Jonathan Cox, Cyree Scott and junior Joshua Cavalier. “We should be in contention for our first winning season in years,” McGee said. “Three seniors return for their final year and a couple of players with a lot of experience.” Girls

Fourth-year head coach Jen Sanders has challenged her players to improve on a daily basis and be more competitive in the Green Country Conference. To that end, Sanders has three returning starters to build around in junior Tara Motte and seniors Dorothea Gilford and Walesha Sisco. The supporting cast includes senior Jeanette Kwe Kwe and freshman Miangel Wallace. The Rangers will play in the inaugural High School Hoops Showcase at the BOK Center on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.

“We lost our point guard and our leading scorer to graduation and we are hoping that those who have been waiting to see the floor take advantage of the opportunity in front of them,” Sanders said. “Our girls work hard at getting better and understand the conference we play in is tough night in and night out. That is our motivation – get better every day and be competitive.” Miangel Wallace could be a surprise in the Green Country Conference and only being a freshman; she could be one of the top players. Boys It may take some time for the players to adjust to a new system and head coach. Russ Gilmore brings an up-tempo style of play with him from his coaching roots in New Mexico. Gilmore has some solid talent to build around in 6-foot-6 post Ryan Ogg, 6-foot-1 forward Daniel Frailey, 6-foot-2 guard Robert Ross, 6-foot guard Tyler Bradshaw and sophomore forward Spencer Henson. “The kids are learning a new system which will take time but we should get better as the season progresses,” Gilmore said. Girls Rebuilding continues for secondyear head coach Kim Barth. The Tigers return two starters in 5-foot-7 senior forward Ofy Chavoya and 5-foot-6 sophomore guard Kelsie Kerns. Barth expects freshman Hunter Gilstrap to be a nice addition to the roster once she gets acclimated to the speed and size of opponents. Heading into the season, Gilstrap has been tabbed as the team’s point guard. Other players to keep an eye on include seniors Tiffany Atkins and Amanda

will round out the expected starting lineup for Skiatook this season.

A young team with just three seniors on the entire roster, the Bulldogs will utilize depth and some valuable experience from a year ago to win games. If the Bulldogs’ young players continue to mature don’t be surprised to see Skiatook deep in the playoffs Girls

A fairly young team, the Lady Bulldogs will use an aggressive defensive style this season to trigger the team’s offensive attack. Senior forwards Madison Stuckey (6-0) and Kourtney Lincicome (5-8) will not only anchor the frontcourt but also be counted on to provide leadership both on and off the floor. Sophomores Mikayla Shulanberger (5-10) and Charity Burdette (5-9) are both expected to start at guard this year and give the team good length on the perimeter. Edison Eagles Boys

Edison may have one of the deepest benches in head coach Michael Parish’s tenure. The Eagles reached the state tournament quarterfinals and finished with 23 victories. Parish has a ton of underclassmen to build toward the future. But the future could be now with a talented pair of freshmen guards in Marcus Mayes and Stefone Richardson. A lot will be riding on the shoulders of senior point guard Dominique Primer, who will be charged with keeping the Eagles on task offensively. Equally key for the Eagles will be the play of forwards Elijah Edwards and Jermaine Finnie. “A lot of young faces will take the floor for the Eagles,” veteran coach Michael Parish said. “But don’t let that fool you, guards Marcus Mayes and Stefone Richardson will become two of the best guards in the state. A lot of Edison’s success this year will depend on how senior point guard Dominique Primer controls the tempo and if sophomores Elijah Edwards and Jermaine Finnie can clear the glass.” Girls

Edison returns four starters off a 17-10 squad that missed the state tournament a year ago. Edison will be led by a pair of double-digit scorers in senior forward Cornequa Finch, recorded 10.0 points and 8.4 rebounds, and junior Shala Dobbins, 12 points, 4.6 steals. Jamika Roberts gives the Eagles another scoring threat after averaging 7.5 points a year ago as a junior. Jasmine Marks, a 5-foot-7 forward, rounds out the returning starters. She is coming off a sophomore season in which she had 2.4 points, 2.3 rebounds. Junior guard/ forward Mariah Green could be the Eagles’ fifth starter after scoring 5.6 points a game as a sophomore. Also look for Jonica Hurd and Jacqueline Carter to be impact players. “We are small and quick so we will play an up-tempo game,” Ford Criddle said. “We are more mature this year so hopefully we will have more patience on offense. We are looking to involve several players in our rotation.” 42

Boys Berryhill returns three capable scorers, led by 6-foot-3 senior forward/guard Chandler Moczyemba, who averaged 18 points and eight rebounds per game. Classmates Anthony Mayberry, a 6-foot2 forward, and Dylan Losh, a 6-foot forward, return after averaging 9.0 and 8.0 points each. Junior guard Brody Mayberry saw a lot of action a year ago. The Chiefs lineup is bolstered by the addition of junior guard Ethan Roberts, a move-in from Jenks. Also look for junior Caleb Hayes, senior Tyson Eshuis and Jacob Bailey to contribute off the bench. “We will run an up-tempo offense to take advantage of our five very good shooters,” Carson said. “We were 13-1 at the OBU team camp over the summer, winning the 4A tournament there. We are focused on our goal and plan on being there at the end.” Girls

Brent Hodges takes over a Berryhill program that won 19 games a year ago. A former assistant at Norman North and Carl Albert, Hodges is in his first stint as head coach. He has plenty of returning talent to help ease the transition. Building around juniors Hailey Belveal (12.2 ppg) and Hailey Melton (11.5) at point guard and forward will be senior guard Jess Boone, junior power forward Victoria Regalado and sophomore small forward Maddie Rogers. “We will play a more up-tempo pace of

Also back are seniors Adam Outlaw at point guard and Will Daugherty at forward. Other players Rahilly will look to for that added depth include juniors Michael Bloomfield and Derek Cole and senior Hayden Hedrick. “We are a much improved team as last season provided a great learning experience,” Rahilly said. “We will need to be more consistent on the offensive end if we plan to make a run at the state tournament. Cascia is big and physical and will be up-tempo. We will take advantage of our depth.” Girls

Fourth-year head coach Lindsay Rogers faces the task of replacing all-state forward Liesel Spoerl, who averaged 18 points a game in leading team to back-to-back 20-win seasons. Boys Optimism is high at Catoosa even though the team only returns one starter. The reason for the high expectations are that coach John Coons also returns several players who logged a lot of playing time a year ago. Seniors Tristan Morgan, Trent Delano, Tre Harvey and Kaleb Presley are all projected as starters.

The fifth spot in the starting lineup remains up for grabs with five players competing for the position,” Coons said. “This is our second year in the system,” said the coach. “We are bigger and stronger and look to build on last year’s turnaround. We should be better defensively. A lot of our new starters played big minutes last year so I do not expect a drop off. The kids have put in a lot of work and are excited about the season.” Girls

Catoosa fifth-year head coach Bryan Wesson will look to a trio of returning starters as the Indians hope to improve on last year’s 12-win season. Senior guard Madison Martin is the top returning scorer. She averaged 13 points a game. Also back are seniors Sarah Nash (8.5 ppg) and Cagen Smith (7.4). Juniors Kendra Moon and Janie Surina and senior Mackenzie Schur also will figure prominently into the game plan this year. “We will be a team that gets up and down the floor,” Wesson said. “We are a veteran group with five returning players with significant minutes last year. We will solid defensively, shoot the ball pretty well. Post play will be the question mark.”

think this was a rebuilding year for head coach Eli Brown. But it may be just he opposite. Ariyon Smith, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, is the only returning starter. Brown said he has been impressed with the play of Lamuel Johnson at point guard and forwards Cameron Williams and Chaz Glover. Derrick Taylor suffered a knee injury in practice but is expected to join the team by January.

“The kids are looking real good,” Brown said. “I guess you could say it’s a rebuilding year but I think we be a very competitive team. We look forward to getting Derrick back in the mix. We may not start clicking until January but we will be in contention.” Girls

Boys Head coach Clyde Barkley still has the fire burning after 37 seasons of coaching high school basketball. “I’m very excited about this year. Our schedule is one of the toughest we’ve had in a long time. Hopefully it will get us ready for the playoffs. I’m as excited for year No.37 to begin as I was for year No.1,” coach Barkley said. A big reason for the excitement is senior forward Taylor Mootry. Mootry averaged 11.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists last season and can only get better. Travis Hill (6-0, Sr.) contributed 8.1 points and 4.0 assists of his own a year ago. Casey Gill is a big 6-foot-5 forward/ center that accounted for 6.1 rebounds to lead the team. Also look for Aaron Davis (6-2, Sr.) and Garrett Glass (6-3, Jr.) in the up tempo style coach Barkley will play this season. With a deep bench and good experience, the Longhorns are optimistic they can be successful this season despite an extremely tough schedule.

Girls “If we continue to get tougher everyday, we’ll be an exciting team with opportunities to do great things,” head coach Donnie Martin said. Returning senior forward Kristen Mootry (5-7) averaged 10 point per game last year and looks to be the catalyst on offense this season. Guard Lexi Williams (5-7, Sr.) will dress in the black and gold for this first time in her playing career after leaving Bixby where she averaged 6.0 points a game. Forward Lindsey Byfield (5-9, Jr.) loves to work inside and bang for rebounds, while 5-foot-9 post player Kylie Rue (Jr.) will look to dominate defensively. Courtney Williamson (5-5, Sr.) averaged 4.0 points per game last year and should have her numbers increase with increased minutes. Also look for Chandler Ford (5-5, Jr.) and Karlie Jones (5-8, Jr.) to have important roles on the team this season.

Colton Pike, a 6-foot-4 junior, who averaged a double-double 14.1 points and 10.1 rebounds last year, will once again bolster the middle while Tyler Rowland (6.2ppg/5.1reb) will return at guard. A talented trio of sophomores including Mason Fine (5.5ppg/4.1reb), Jason Pirtle (2.6ppg) and Zach Robinson (2.1ppg/2.1asst) will strengthen the depth this year as the Locust Grove opens the year ranked among the top ten teams in Class 4A.

“This team is very good,” said Maple. “As a group, we’re solid in all positions with good defense, good post play and great shooting guards. They’re hungry to return to the state tournament.” Girls

Lady Pirates will continue to build around reFour is the lucky number for the Lady Pirates who enter the 2013-2014 season with four starters returning from last year’s team. Fouryear starter Sydnie Pierce returns to the point guard after dishing out 8.3 points and 3.5 assists per game last season. Another four-year regular is Bailey Holman, who averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds a year ago. Towering in the middle is 6-foot-0 junior forward Madison Davis, who paced the scoring totals with 15.3 points and 6.5 rebounds

while junior guard Kennedy Sokoloski (6.1ppg/4.0reb) will return.

Coach Justin Brown’s squad welcomes the return of six other veterans with starting role experience. The Pirates will also gain the return of senior forward Kelsey Streeter from an ACL injury last year after starting as a sophomore. “Experience is a plus,” said Brown. “With our solid guard play, we want to run and use our press to create turnovers. With continued improved play insider, we can go inside and out, whatever the opponent will give us.”

Mannford Pirates

Boys “Good balanced scoring returning this season. Look for a breakout season from Randy Daugherty. He is a very athletic, physical guard,” said head coach Mike Barfield. Daugherty averaged 8.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds as a sophomore. Fellow guard Matt Mendenhall (6-0, Sr.) also averaged 8.0 points and 2.0 steals per game. The combo gives coach Barfield two scorers in the backcourt. “Mendenhall is more of a slashing guard,” Barfield said. Forward Bryce Hoggatt (6-2, Sr.) is a physical player who can step out and hit 3-pointers. Last year Hoggatt averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. Two players expected to help on the boards are Garrett James (6-2, Jr.) and Derek Hilton (6-3, Jr.). The pair combined for nearly 10 rebounds a game last year. “We have good experience returning and should be an improved ball club this season,” Barfield said. Look for the Pirates to play a mixture of man and zone on defense. Girls Mannford returns three starters from last year’s squad. Sophomore Mariah Nicolet (5-5, G) averaged 3.2 points and 6.0 assists last season as a freshman. Last year

she was “just a player to watch,” this season she could lead the team in scoring. Guard Madison Hudgins (5-5, Jr.) will play a big role in the offense as well. Last year she averaged 2.9 points per game. Forward Averye McBroom (5-9, Jr.) and center Kelsey Burden (6-1, Sr.) must control the paint and dominate the boards. Burden averaged 3.0 rebounds a game last year. Hannah Spears is another guard who coach Barfield expects to have a big impact this season. “We must replace our top two scorers, so offense will be a concern. Nicolet has quickness and the ability to lead this team. Burden must play big for us this season,” Barfield said.

McClain Titans

Boys McLain players bring an unselfish attitude to the season. One in which no one is concerned with who gets the credit, head coach Cordell Love said. All five starters return, giving the Titans a good shot at a deep playoff run. Players to watch include junior point guard Keondre Jones, senior shooting guards Bishop Louie and Nicholas Foster and junior guard David Castine in the backcourt. McLain fans also will want to keep an eye on 6-foot-5 seniors Nigel Carter at forward and Quinton Nails at center. Jermaine Brown and Darrell McMahon will also have a positive impact on the team. “We expect to be playing in the final game (state championship) of the season,” Love said. Girls First-year McLain head coach Bobby Nealy Jr. faces a tough task of getting the Titans untracked after a 1-17 record a year ago. Brylah Gahagan and LaJa Jefferson return as the top scorers at six and eight points, respectively. Top prospects for McLain include freshmen

Ceyairra Flemons and Te’Leka Calvin-Rucker. “We will run an up-tempo style, competing on both ends of the floor,” Nealy said. “We will be a much-improved team. This group has set the bar high for themselves and they have been working extremely hard to get better every day.”

Boys With a new coach and a new system in place this year the Eagles are looking to improve on last season. That improvement will hinge largely on a group of young and inexperienced players. Juniors Blake Mills (5-7) and Skylar Dennis (6-2) will be the backbone of the team this season and provide a good deal of leadership. On the floor Mills will start at guard while Dennis will see time both on the perimeter and in the post as a forward. Other versatile players who will play both inside and out this year will be sophomores JJ Filby (6-2) and George Longhorn (6-3). Sophomore guard Daniel Devore (6-0) will complete the Eagles starting rotation this year and be counted on to provide big minutes in key situations. The length and size of the Eagles will also help in head coach Larry Grigg’s patented matchup zone defense.

Lady Eagles head coach Russell Morgan said that he has high expectations for this season with the bulk of his returning scorers and difference makers back this season. “We have a very athletic group of players. I am very excited about our possibilities and look forward to coaching such a hard working group of kids,” Morgan said.

Helping the Lady Eagles soar to new heights this season will be junior point guard Aubryana Matussak (5-6). Last season Matussak averaged 12 points, six rebounds and four assists per game and is back and ready for more this year. Junior shooting guard Courtney Nugent (5-6) could possibly be dubbed “little miss dangerous” and will be expected to put a stranglehold on opposing defenses this year. Also starting on the perimeter will be junior Savannah Mathews (5-9) and sophomore Lynsey Moniz (5-5). With four talented guards surrounding her, senior center Jessica Hansen (5-10) will help balance out the Lady Eagles offensive attack.

Look for Alex Freeman and Drake Harlan to have expanded roles this season. “We have a chance to be very good,” Wakley said. “We will play a tough man defense and are capable of scoring on the offensive end. We are looking forward to a very solid year.” Girls Victory Christian returns four starters off a squad that finished 19-9 and will look to light up the scoreboard this season. The bonus for veteran coach Ed Calhoon is that all four returning starters – LaRanda Thomas, Kacie Key, Micayla Crow and Alexis Wade – are just juniors. The perimeter game may be the strongest in Calhoon’s tenure at Victory. The Conquerors also have a deep bench from which to build around. “We only lost one player off a team that lost in the Area Consolation semifinals,” said head coach Ed Calhoon. “We will let it fly often and compete. A tradition rich program the Lady Hornets return four starters from last season’s 22-9 team and are an early favorite to compete for the Class 4A gold ball. Along with the four returning starters, the Lady Hornets also have several other key players who give Vinita some of the best depth and balance in the state. Senior guards Kamry Chamberlain (5-3), Kenzie Baker (5-4) and Megan Woodward (5-5) lead the way on the perimeter for the Lady Hornets. Last season Baker averaged 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while also racking up 69 total steals. Other key players in the backcourt this year will be juniors Baylee Mendell (5-7) and Sydney Hopwood (5-6). In the paint the Lady Hornets won’t be quite as deep as they are on the perimeter looking to junior forward Taylor Steinhoff (5-8) and sophomore Carsyn Spurgeon (5-10) to do most of the heavy lifting. Chet Caywood (6-0, Sr.) was selected to the VYPE Top 100 after averaging 20.8 points and 5.6 rebounds a contest last season. Caywood may be the most underrated guard in the class. Forward Heath Konsure (6-1, So.) is young, but plays like an upperclassmen after gaining some valuable experience off the bench. Point guard Ira Blackbear (5-9, Fr.) is one of those young players coach Ward is excited to see mature and become the player he’s destined to become. How long have you been involved in FCA? I have been involved in FCA for two years now. I am currently on the board for our FCA chapter at my high school.

Who influenced you to join? We had an FCA club my sophomore year and it was ended for reasons out of the students’ control. It wasn’t started again until halfway through my junior year. I was influenced to rejoin when some of my teammates on my dance team wanted to go back.

How has FCA made an impact in your life on the field and off the field? Being involved in my youth group along with FCA helps my team know where I stand. Every time before we go out and compete, I always lead the team in a prayer. I try to lead by that example not only on the field but just throughout my normal day at school. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? As expressed before, I make sure that our team is led in a prayer before we do anything in front of an audience. I strive to just let my light shine in all of my actions. Whether at a normal practice or in front of our town at a football game. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? My favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11. It reminds me that even in my darkest moments when I feel all alone and helpless, that God has plans for my life that I don’t even know about yet. It also reminds me that not only are His plans destined for my undecided future, but they are hopeful and joyful plans.
