Road relief Solution for school run chaos RELIEF is in sight for a Nantwich school plagued by traffic problems. The school is set to build a new car park to tackle traffic chaos on the school run. Children going to Stapeley Broad Lane Primary School in Nantwich have to be dropped off on the A529. Cars are often parked on both sides of the road, creating a bottleneck. The school, a self-governing academy, raised money to buy the land for a car park and secured planning permission two years ago, but the project has been held up by the need to secure agreement from a number of parties. But now head teacher Ian Shackleton has written to parents telling them that work will start over the summer. He said: “The governors will meet and we expect to be able to confirm that all the

legalities are in place and that planning conditions have been met. “We have already appointed a contractor and we expect the work to be carried out over the summer holidays to minimise disruption to the school.” Nantwich Councillor Rachel Bailey added: “I am pleased to hear that a solution is now within reach. “Cheshire East Council has done all it can to help bring this about by granting planning permission and agreeing a long lease on the land for the car park with a reduction on the amount payable by the school. “We are pleased to hear that the school is now in a position to go ahead with the work. “Because of our concern for road safety, we took action some time ago to reduce speed limits and install other traffic management measures outside the school.”

All aboard for boat launch A NEW project offering free boat trips to disabled people has been launched this month. The Overwater Wheelyboat, a local community charity will provide pleasure cruises on the Shropshire Union Canal. The trips will allow disabled children and adults to enjoy the wildlife and countryside and even go fishing. The 17ft boat, has been specially designed with easy access for people with mobility issues allowing easy roll on/ roll off access for wheelchairs. The launch event took place at the Overwater Marina in Audlem on Saturday June 27. Project chairman Rodney

Cottrell said: “Boat trips from the marina are extremely popular but inaccessible for anyone who can’t climb into a boat from the jetty. “This new boat allows us to take those people on two-hour journeys along a lovely stretch of the canal offering fantastic views and no locks!” Donations from charities, local businesses and individuals have helped to raise the £30,000 needed to build the boat, special access jetty, required licensing and immediate running costs. Visit www. overwaterwheelyboat.co.uk for more information.

Willaston plan WILLASTON’S efforts to prevent unsustainable and unplanned development in the village are being back by Cheshire East Council. Newly elected council leader Michael Jones, has agreed to designate the parish as the area that will be covered by the Willaston Neighbourhood Plan. Neighbourhood plans enable local people to have a say in the development they would like to see in the area. Willaston Parish Council, which covers a largely rural area with a population of 2,277 situated in the green gap between Crewe and Nantwich, applied for the designation in March. Once completed, the plan will be adopted by Cheshire East Borough Council and form part of the development plan for the Borough. Councillor Jones said: “Neighbourhood plans are a key part of putting residents first, one of the Council’s most important priorities, and we fully support communities in putting them in place.”

Pop icon at the Civic THE original ‘princess of punk’ comes to Nantwich on Friday July 10. Toyah Wilcox will be performing at the Civic Hall as part of her Close Up & Personal tour. Outspoken and impossible to categorise, Toyah has become something of a British icon as a pioneering rock legend, actress and composer. In a career spanning three decades she has had some 13 top 40 singles, recorded 20 albums, written two books, appeared in over 40 stage plays and made ten feature

films. It all began in her hometown Birmingham in 1977 when film director Derek Jarman offered her a role in the seminal punk epic Jubilee. She went on to appear alongside Katherine Hepburn in The Corn is Green and played ‘Monkey’ in Quadrophenia. By this time her band was gaining critical success, platimun albums soon followed and in 1982 she won the Best Female Singer at the Rock & Pop Awards. Tickets are £17, 7pm doors.

THE Societies Spectacular event will take place again this year on Saturday July 18 on Nantwich Square. Hopefully the event will be blessed with better weather than last year when heavy rain forced a move to the Civic Hall. This year’s event is being organised through the town council office. Anyone interested in holding a stall should contact 01270 619224.

Mayor making

THE new Mayor of Nantwich Andrew Martin was invested at a ceremony in Nantwich Civic Hall last month. Councillor Martin was sworn in as the Town Council’s new chairman, taking over from outgoing Mayor Councillor Christine Farrall. The new Mayor has named four charities for his 2015-16 year in office. These are Nantwich Museum, Nantwich in Bloom, Nantwich Food Bank and Nantwich Players.

HORTICULTURAL students at Reaseheath College are busy preparing for the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park this month. Instead of designing and building their customary show garden, students will exhibit a feature depicting the structure of a leaf. Supporting the RHS in its efforts to inspire younger people into careers involving horticulture, the show feature will link with an educational marquee where visitors can learn more.

Advertise in The Dabber for as little as £20 per month

A giant aphid sculpture, 1.8 metres high, will provide the focus of the show feature. It will be surrounded by a leaf section showing cells, systems and pathways. Students have been busy collecting thousands of bottles which they will convert into walls and sculptures. The scheme will show edible and medicinal plants and will later be recreated at Reaseheath’s £8.5 million National Centre for Food Futures and the Environment, due to open next autumn.

DOUBLE DELIGHT

Dabbers continue to strengthen squad ahead of new season DABBERS boss Phil Parkinson has continued his summer recruitment drive with the signing of centre half powerhouse Darren Thornton. The latest signing is one of many made over the closed season and is welcome news for the club after difficulties off the pitch. The club had been forced to cancel community football sessions last month for local youngsters after travellers set up camp in the Weaver Stadium car park. They have since moved on, but the club’s director of football operations Jon Gold said youths amongst the group had been ‘intimidating’ and ‘disruptive’. The club was also left with heaps of rubbish to clear up after the travellers had gone. Back to footballing matters, Thornton’s impressive

The

defensive displays last season played a major part in helping Curzon Ashton to promotion to the Conference North from the Evo-Stik Premier division. Manager Phil Parkinson said: “Darren’s quality at this level is just what we have been looking for. “We are delighted that he has chosen to join us despite offers to remain at Curzon and interest from a host of other clubs. “I am feeling really pleased with the overall quality of the squad we have been able to assemble at this stage of the close season and we can’t wait to start working with the lads once pre season starts in another few weeks.” It was double delight for Parky and his back room team as hot prospect and young player of the season Elliot Osbourne also committed his long-term future to the

Dabbers. “Everyone saw the potential that Elliot has from when he joined last season and we are looking forward to helping him develop his immense talent further over the season and I am sure he is going to make a big contribution and develop into a fantastic

Bed Warehouse

player.” said Parkinson. The Dabbers will make a pre-season trip to local rivals Northwich Victoria on Tuesday August 4 with a 7:45pm kick off at Wincham Park. They return there again on Saturday August 8 to play Witton.
