What to eat? The region’s gastronomy is nourished by Andean and jungle traditions. Outstanding dishes include the not-to-be-missed cuy serrano en guiso de maní tostado (fried guinea pig in a roasted peanut stew), juane de yuca (grated and boiled manioc rice and chicken and/or beef jerky wrapped in corn husk), cecina (cured pork), tamales and humitas (both mashed corn wrapped in its husk with varied fillings). Drinks include guarapo (sugarcane juice) and licor de leche (liquor with whey). The region’s production of coffee, cacao, exotic fruits like pitajaya and ancient roots like the arracacha, is also outstanding.
What to buy? The women of the Amazon make garments and accessories such as ponchos, vests and blankets using the illahua, the traditional backstrap loom technique. They reproduce their own designs on these fine items drawing on the iconography of the Chachapoyas region. Roots and tree trunks are also used to design furniture and handicrafts more generally. Natural ceramic pieces on which artists capture the beauty of the local flora and fauna in vivid colors are the most outstanding examples of the region’s decorative arts.
What to see? Chachapoyas Province The Chachapoyas Main Square The city center conforms to the characteristic checkerboard layout of colonial cities. In the middle of the square there is a bronze fountain. The square is surrounded by colonial houses with balconies worked in wood.
The Basilica of Saint John the Baptist The different styles of the building’s facade recreate its predecessor that collapsed in the earthquake of 1971. Art from the Quito school is among the works it houses.
Gilberto Tenorio Ruiz Exposition Hall Jirón Ayacucho 904, Main Square. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 1:00 pm / 3:00 pm - 5:45 pm. It has four rooms in which cultural assets of the Chachapoyas culture are exhibited, which mostly correspond to donations from local residents. In the first room you can appreciate the location, flora and fauna of the region; In the second room, cultural objects of Chachapoyas-style ceramics are exhibited, with Cajamarca and Inca influence, textiles and organic objects; in the third room, lithic goods and in the fourth room, mummies.
The Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza Mansion At the intersection of Jirón Ayacucho and Jirón Ortiz Arrieta. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Hero and forefather of Peruvian independence, Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza was born on 17 April 1750 in this house that is currently the home and seat of the Bishop of Chachapoyas. The most notable features are the entrance, the main courtyard, the bishop’s hall and the reception hall. The house has both colonial and republican influences.
The Dos Rosas Mansion At the intersection of Jirón Amazonas and Jirón Merced. Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9:00 am - 12:00 pm / 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. This mansion built in the 18th century has colonial and republican architectural features. Its important rooms include the chapel and the sitting room. It has been owned by the Torrejón Montesa family since the end of the 19th century.
Independence Square Jirón Amazonas, block 3. This small plaza commemorates the Battle of Higos Urco, a victory of the patriots lead by Colonel José Matos.
The Yana Yacu Well Cerro Luya Urco, 1 km from the Main Square (10 min. on foot). It is said that during his visit, Saint Toribio made the waters gush to break the drought that was ravaging the city. Commemorating this, one of the well’s stones is etched with the figures of a mitre and a staff. Known also as the Cuyana Fountain, the locals say that single men who come to the city and drink the well’s waters will stay forever, attracted by the beauty of city’s women.
The Santa Isabel Nursery 3 km to the southeast (10 min. by car) of the city of Chachapoyas (take the road to the right at the first fork in the road to Levanto). Ticket entry by prior arrangement, telephone 920-642-228 / 927-677-487 Amongst the great variety of native flora that grows here, the area’s traditional orchids are a standout.

The Sonche Canyon 7.5 km to the north of the city of Chachapoyas towards Huancas (25 min. by van and 15 min. on foot) to the Sonche Canyon. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. Ticket entry. With a depth of 962 meters, the canyon is the ideal place for an amazing view of the Sonche River and its surroundings populated with the quina plant.
The Yálape Archeological Remains 17 km to the south of the city of Chachapoyas (50 min. by car). The remains consist of ornate circular structures with high reliefs in the shape of diamonds and zigzags that were built by the Chachapoya culture between AD 1100 and A.D. 1300.
The Leymebamba Museum Av. Austria s/n, Leymebamba. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 10:00 am - 4:30 pm. Ticket entry. The museum includes Pre-Hispanic weapons and ceramics found in the area. The most outstanding items are the mummies and objects extracted from the Lagoon of the Condors.
Lagoon of the Condors From the locality of Leymebamba, 93 km to the south of the city of Chachapoyas (2 hr. by car), it is a hike of between 8 and 12 hours to the lagoon (the journey can also be done by mule). Ticket entry. More than 200 mummies and approximately 2000 items belonging to the Inca and Chachapoya cultures were discovered in this lagoon. The rock paintings that adorn the outcrops on the shore should also be appreciated.
Luya Province The Village of the Dead 29 km to the northwest of the city of Chachapoyas towards Lamud (1 hr. by car), 11 km to the Pucatambo sector (30 min. by car) and then 45 min. on foot. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Ticket entry. The Village of the Dead (Pueblo de los Muertos) is an old Pre-Hispanic town that gets its name because all that remains are chullpas (funeral towers) and tombs. The stone, paja reed and mud chullpas measure up to 3 meters in height and preserve objects such as batanes (hand-mills) and hornacinas (niches). The sarcophagi of the same material are organized in groups.
The Quiocta Cavern 45 km to the northwest of the city of Chachapoyas (1 hr. 30 min. by car and 10 min. on foot). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Ticket entry. Human skulls and bones as well as curious stalactite and stalagmite formations are found in this cavern, which has a depth of 580 meters.
The Karajía Sarcophagi 51 km to the northwest of the city of Chachapoyas (2 hr. by car) towards the Cruzpata community and 1 km on foot (30 min). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. Modeled with small stones held together by mud and straw, these anthropoid sarcophagi measure up to 2 meters in height. On the outside they are painted in ocher and white, simulating masks. Preserved mummies are found inside with their funeral dowry. Also known as purunmachos, the sarcophagi are nestled on top of a cliff.
Huaylla Belén Valley 60 km from the city of Chachapoyas (2 hr 30 min. by car), along the LuyaCohechán-Belén route. A walk through this valley, which is also known as Serpiente de Plata (the Silver Snake), allows the visitor to see landscapes typical of the cloud forest and its wildlife. It is a point of interest for fans of bird watching. The Huaylla River winds through it with many twists and turns.
Kuelap Monumental Archaeological Zone 72 km to the southwest of the city of Chachapoyas (2 hr. 30 min. by car) towards La Malca and 25 min. on foot). Can also access to Nuevo Tingo (1 hour by car) and take the cable car (20 minutes) to La Malca. Kuelap Monumental Archaeological Zone opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. (ticket entry). Cable car opening hours: Tue-Sun 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (ticket entry). Surrounded by a protective wall of 1900 meters in length, the fortified citadel was a political, religious and military center for the Chachapoya culture (AD 500 – AD 1450). It is divided into two levels: the Lower Village and the Upper Village. A feature of the former, with its structures decorated with rhomboid and zigzag figures, is the Tintero (the Inkpot), which is ceremonial in nature. The ceremonial platform and the north tower, which served as a lookout, are found in the Upper Village.
The Revash Mausoleums 74 km to the south of the city of Chachapoyas towards San Bartolo (2 hr. 40 min. by car) and 1km (25 min. on foot). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Ticket entry. This is a funeral center with mausoleums of up to 3 stories and sloping roofs, embedded in a mountain. Only its facades can be seen, with quadrangular niches, in the form of the cross and “T”. Some of the sections have ocher rock paintings depicting animals and people.

BongarĂĄ Province Gocta Falls 41 km to the north of the city of Chachapoyas (1 hr. by car) towards the village of Cocachimba and 5.5 km (2 hr. 30 min on foot). Opening hours: Mon-Sun 7:00 am - 5:30 pm. Ticket entry. The walk to the falls, which is also known as La Chorrea, is the perfect opportunity to appreciate the exuberant flora and fauna of the area, including in particular the different species of monkey and the Andean cock-of-the rock. At 771 meters, it is the third highest waterfall in Peru.
Yumbilla Falls 52 km to the north of the city of Chachapoyas (1 hr. by car) towards Pedro Ruiz Gallo, then 25 min. by mototaxi to the village of Cuispes and 2 hr. on foot to the falls. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 7:00 am - 5:30 pm. Ticket entry. The water falls 895 meters in four cascades. Birds such as the Andean cock-of-the-rock as well as monkeys and reptiles are abundant in the surroundings. It is the second highest waterfall in Peru.
La Chinata Falls 52 km to the north of the city of Chachapoyas (1 hr. by car) towards Pedro Ruiz Gallo, then 7 km (20 min. by car) to the village of San Carlos and 12 km (2 hr. on foot) to the falls. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. The waterfall of 580 meters consists of four cascades. As well as enjoying the freshness of its waters, the visitor can observe flora consisting of orchids, mosses and ferns in its surroundings.
Lake Pomacochas 84 km to the north of the city of Chachapoyas (2 hr. by car) towards the locality of Pomacochas and 1 km (15 min. on foot) to the lake. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. This lake sits at 2150 meters and is fed by subterranean streams. Its dark green waters reach a depth of 80 meters. Species of flora such as the totora reed, the cattails and the foxtail feature in its surroundings. Its fauna includes birds such as herons, buergueras and divers.
Rodríguez de Mendoza Province The Leo Caverns 84 km to the southeast of the city of Chachapoyas towards San Nicolás (2 hr. by car), 22 km towards Omia (30 min. by car) and 1 km (15 min. on foot). Ticket entry. The cavern’s interior is divided into various compartments where stalactites and stalagmites have formed with shapes which resemble candelabras, curtains, shoes, wild animals and Solomonic columns.
The La Colpa Hot Springs 99 km to the southeast of the city of Chachapoyas towards the Tocuya Annex (2 hr. 45 min. by bus) and 10 min. on foot to the hot springs. Opening hours: Mon-Sun 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Ticket entry. With a 40% concentration of sulphur, the waters are therapeutic for dermatological and rheumatic conditions. The temperature ranges between 20 °C and 25 °C.
Bagua Province The Pongo de Rentema Tourist Complex 20 km to the northeast of the city of Bagua (15 min. by car). The confluence of the Utcubamba, Chinchipe and Marañón rivers forms a 2.4 km pongo (a narrow gorge) which crosses the eastern range of the Andes. There is also a hot springs source in the area, as well as Fidillas Mountain (or Cerro Colorado), where paleontological findings have been made and the Tompende archeological site is located.
El Porvenir Lagoon 49 km to the north of the city of Bagua towards the village of El Porvenir (1 hr. by car). This lagoon of blue-green waters which reach a depth of 80 meters can be enjoyed. It is surrounded by the lush vegetation typical of the upper jungle.
