“ This place is a small but legendary part of a great southtown. You’ll be enamored by the cozy atmosphere, charmed by the staff, and delighted by the care that goes into the preparation. But once the food arrives you’ll likely pay no attention to those graces!” KATIE KRAWCZYK

DUFF’S » Multiple locations “ The wings are not too meaty with just the right amount of crunch, and you can get them any way you want, whether it’s texture (regular, crispy, extra crispy) or flavor (mild, mild-medium, medium-hot, hot, super hot, death, and Armageddon) – not to mention a couple of specialty flavors. The fries are thin and crispy, the bleu cheese is the right consistency and flavor, and you can even grab a few other Buffalo eats, such as beef on weck.”

It was a typical Friday night in 1964 for Teressa Bellissimo. She was nearing the

Instead of giving up, Bellissimo got creative. She grabbed the wing-shaped parts of chicken that she usually used for soup stock, tossed them in the fryer, and coated

Wing Festival. Ironically, there wasn’t one. So Buffalonian Drew Cerza, now affectionately known as the Wing King, decided to make it happen back in 2002. This is a case of real life knocking off Hollywood; the event has estab-

lished itself as the grand finale to Buffalo’s vibrant summer festival season. This year’s event includes bobbing for wings, several wingeating competitions, “sauce-offs” and live music. It’s an event not to be missed!

Wright On! Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo Legacy

B

UFFALO ISN’T JUST A CITY OF MUSEUMS. The city itself is a museum. A haven for the brightest and boldest architectural minds of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Queen City is a preservation-minded place. We protect our breathtaking structures like they’re the last Italian sausage at a Bills game tailgate.

That spirit of preservation explains the wealth of Frank Lloyd Wright treasures you’ll find in our neighborhoods. When Buffalo executive Darwin D. Martin needed an architect for the new office building of his employer, the Larkin Soap Company, he hit the jackpot when he landed 36-year-old Wright. Buffalo’s FRANK LLOYD landscape would never look the same. WRIGHT Wright designed a stunning office building for Martin – the Larkin Administration Building, sadly demolished in 1950 – but he didn’t stop there. Buffalo is full of Wright-designed structures, including the Darwin Martin House (a triumph of Wright’s Prairie style) in North Buffalo, the Blue Sky Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery, the lakeside Graycliff home where the Martins spent their summers, and the Fontana Boathouse. Few places have as many beautifully preserved examples of Wright operating at the top of his game. And in 2014, a filling station first designed by Wright in 1927 but never realized will finally come to fruition at the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum. Amazingly, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Buffalo’s architecture scene. KC KRATT

Buffalo is a center of culture; nearly 20 theater companies, a symphony orchestra, art galleries of every size and a vibrant live music scene call the city home. NEWSEUM

This fall, the Buffalo History Museum will become the permanent home for Russert’s workspace, which has been an exhibit called Inside Tim Russert’s Office: If it’s Sunday, it’s Meet The Press at Washington D.C.’s

Newseum for the last several years. Russert’s love for Western New York is apparent in his office, which includes memorabilia from his favorite team, the Buffalo Bills. The history museum plans to expand the Newseum’s display and create an exhibit that captures the story of Tim’s Buffalo years. Russert described how his Buffalo childhood shaped his values and worldview in his 2004 memoir, Big Russ and Me.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday that Buffalo takes seriously – so seriously that the city has not one, but two, parades. On March 14, head to the “Old Neighborhood” St. Patrick’s Day Parade. With ironworkers, family clans, Irish dancers and bagpipers weaving their way through the historically Irish First Ward neighborhood, this is a lively working man’s parade. The larger of the two parades takes place the next day, March 15. Beginning in Niagara Square, this parade works its way north along Buffalo’s stately Delaware Avenue, past two districts filled with restaurants and bars – Chippewa Street and Allentown. www.thevalleycenter.com / www.buffalostpatricksdayparade.com

Dear Canadians, You’ve tailgated at the Ralph. Caught a flight, found a bargain, been to a game and returned home the same day. You’ve been here, done that. But do you really know Buffalo? Have you seen a Broadway show at Shea’s? Tried the beef-on-weck sushi at Seabar? Quaffed a craft brew at Cole’s? Toured a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece? Walked and gawked and window-shopped in the Elmwood Village? Caught an alt-country show at Sportsmen’s Tavern? Been to an opening at the Burchfield Penney? Segwayed through Delaware Park? Stopped to smell the flowers at Garden Walk? Taken the kids to the Buffalo Zoo? Had an artisanal cocktail at Vera? Been to a classical concert at Kleinhans? Kayaked through Elevator Alley? Gone to a food truck rodeo at Larkin Square? Stayed in a Historic Hotel of America at the Mansion on Delaware? No? Then what are you waiting for? That’s 15 things you didn’t know about Buffalo. Pop over the Peace Bridge and see for yourself. The nearest faraway place is just a short drive away. Sincerely,

Buffalo

THE L AST WORD LARISSA & MICHAEL MILNE

On the Road in Buffalo

MICHAEL MILNE

W

Larissa Milne (née Mazurek) makin’ the doughnuts at Mazurek’s Bakery, an authentic Polish bakery in Buffalo’s Old First Ward.

HEN WE SOLD EVERYTHING WE OWNED TO TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD,

Niagara Falls was one of our “must see” sites. We looked into the area and discovered that the nearby city of Buffalo boasts so many exciting attractions that we made it the focus of our visit to this dynamic region.

We spent a week in Buffalo tasting the local charbroiled hot dogs, strolling through Frank Lloyd Wright designed houses, gazing upwards at some of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in America and eating our way through the West Side Bazaar, where we sampled tasty Burmese, Peruvian, Thai and Ethiopian foods under one roof. We also found a culture of native Buffalonians, and more than a few transplants, who exhibited the strongest sense of native pride we’ve seen during our travels around the world. They’ve even developed their own quirky sense of humor. Where else can you buy a t-shirt that proudly declares, “My city smells like Cheerios”? (Thanks to the General Mills plant it really does.)

72

A week wasn’t enough to see all that Buffalo has to offer. As full-time travelers, we rarely visit the same place twice, but we’ll be heading back to this spirited city on Lake Erie. While we did get to channel our inner Sherpa by ascending the highest climbing wall in the world on a former grain silo at Silo City Rocks, we never made it to the last kazoo factory in America and our taste buds were so active devouring new sensations that we didn’t even get around to trying authentic Buffalo wings at the Anchor Bar, their birthplace. Next time. Buffalonians are a proud mix of people who love their hometown and are eager to share it with visitors. After a week there we could see why. Travel writers Larissa and Michael Milne chucked it all to travel around the world as global nomads. You can follow their adventures at www.ChangesInLongitude.com.
