CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// Firstly, my thanks to outgoing Chairman Steve Donovan for the unrelenting effort he has made over his years in the hot seat! When Kay & I joined the VCC in March 2012 and turned up to the club night at Awatoto Steve was in the Chair. He made a point of welcoming us on the night, thanking us for not owning a Model A, and made us feel welcome at the club. His efforts over the years have not gone un-noticed by both long serving and newer members and he has left an indelible mark on the club. Steve thanks for leaving the club in such good health, and rest assured our efforts will focus on not only retaining the position but adding value for members. Moving forward, I am thankful to the support you have shown me over the past three years as Club Captain and the confidence you have shown in electing me to represent you all as Chairman. The “management” group of the club has a bit of a new look and I welcome Esther Smith to the role of Club Captain and look forward to working with Esther in the coming year. We (myself in particular!) are also lucky to have a new Secretary in Peter Ball and Peter welcome to the team. The committee members are made up of Trevor Charman (Treasurer for the interim) before resuming the role of committee Member, Malcom Blair, Derek Gordon and Steve Trott, with of course Steve Donovan slotting in as Immediate Past Chairman. The new Treasurer will be announced in the coming month and will be very welcome into the Team. To the balance of willing helpers who have again stepped into the breach, and I won’t July 2017

list you all, but a very warm welcome for the coming year. It is greatly appreciated the efforts you all put into assuring your club operates the way it does. With both the newly elected Club Captain and Secretary away overseas, please take this as an all-encompassing report for those roles and bear-with us until we have our full crew back on deck. The AGM. Well its been and gone, it had a few interesting moments but was largely nothing to dwell on. You will be aware (or those who attended will be) that there have been some changes to the way Life Membership is handled and these changes will be notified once they are added into the rule book. Probably the most significant item out of the AGM is the Southward Family Award that has been added into the clubs “trophy” range, courtesy of John & Fran Southwards generosity. This will be an annual Award made by the committee for distinguished or exceptional service by an individual to the club. The first of such awards were made on the night honouring Steve Donovan for his exceptional and distinguished service as Branch Chairman over eight years. The second was presented to Mark Jenkinson for his services to the building committee for the Clubroom project. My first event in the role was the Club Run on Sunday 18th June, well organised and run by Barrie & Lyndsay Browne, and well attended on what was a lovely fine winter’s day. Refer the write up later in the MAG for further details.

COUNTRY RUN & TIME FOR BEER// By Phip Tait

» Lunch stop at Kereru School

» GodsOwn Brewery

Sunday 18 June - a beautiful sunny day for a car run in Godzone - made even better by Team NZ beating Oracle in both races for the America’s Cup. Eat your heart out Jimmy ‘Spittle’! And another two great wins on Monday 19th. Yeeha! Go Team NZ!!

Tour” looking for the rellies! We caught up with the rest of the convoy down the road sampling at GodsOwn Brewery!! Question time and prize giving was held at the Brewery.

We departed the Club rooms in a variety of free range “vintage” cars turning right into Sandy Road, via Brookfields Road, Gilligan Road, Allen Road, SH50 Expressway, Links Road, through Fernhill onto SH50 - noting many windmills amongst the vineyards. At Maraekakaho we turned right at the Monument into Kereru Road. There were lots of early lambs around and it was great to see the countryside green again not brown and parched.

Our thanks go to Barrie & Lyndsay Browne for organising this fun day. To Hans and Mercia - Jim and I are so pleased to see you both enjoying the 1926 Buick.

We stopped for a lunch break in the sun at Kereru School. After lunch we carried on down Kereru Road, into Salisbury Road and back onto SH50 again. Two cars followed Juliette & I into Tait Road when we did a “Tiki

MAY-JUNE CLUB EVENTS// LADIES RUN

NEW MEMBERS AFTERNOON

The weather was coolish but fine for those who gathered at the car park by the Rose & Shamrock for the start of the annual Ladies run.

Sadly it was disappointing that only half the number of new members that indicated attendance arrived however the weather did not help and some of the outside activities had to be abandoned. We hope that those that did come learnt a little more about the history and workings of the Club and enjoyed a hot cup of tea & coffee with some nice treats, together with good conversation.

SUNDAY 21ST MAY

Chris & Sue Truman were given the task to organise the troops as Helen & Peter Ball who won last year were away on Holiday. The run was just over an hour long travelling through Havelock North, Flaxmere, Hastings & Napier. With 14 questions to answer along the way, many relating to Names of streets with a few trick questions thrown in for good measure. When everyone arrived at the destination, the Greendale Rest home in Tait Drive Greenmeadows, Steph & Lance had organised the setting up of the dining room for us to have a cup of tea/coffee along with the lovely assortment of food that everyone had provided. The judging was done and with a ½ point difference Esther Smith driving their 1960 Humber Super Snipe with Lesley Bair & Kay Elmsly took out the prize.

SATURDAY 20TH MAY

The Committee appreciated you taking the time coming along and we hope to see you at club runs & events in the future.

JUNE MID WEEK RUN WEDNESDAY

12 cars assembled for our June mid-week run which took us through Raupare Road area of Hastings, ending up at Puketapu Park for lunch. It was a nice sunny day good company and a good run.

You will just have to come along for next year’s Ladies run to see what is in store! May be something a little different.

Please note: Due to the dates of these events, these club reports & photos were unable to be printed in the June Mag. July 2017

HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters

Hi Folks, Well it’s been a busy old month considering we are ‘closed for winter’ The update on cars is that we have also sold the MGB, the Citroen Light 15 and one of the two Mokes. The MGB and Light 15 went to private homes and the Moke is heading to Gisborne to a catering company, husband and wife team becoming a mobile chef ’s kitchen for events. Apparently, hot plates in the back and they’ll be good to go. We look forward to seeing the results. Always great knowing they are headed off to good homes. Almost as soon as they were collected, our latest arrival made an appearance. A beautiful 1924 Hupmobile which takes the collection of ‘Hups’ in the fleet to a matching four. We had the car photo booth out again for the I-Site’s Local’s Fun Day and although a little chilly the Hawke’s Bay sun did it again and the event was enjoyed by all. A fantastic give back to the community from the Napier i-Site and a whole host of local suppliers chipping in to offer our locals some fantastic gifts, experiences and a fun family day out.

David is about to head to Europe for the winter and whilst on his travels he will be heading to the Goodwood Revival, Beaulieu and the BDC at Silverstone amongst others. In fact, it seems most of the Hooters team are off on their well deserved travels with Tere heading to Mexico, Ginny to the UK, Claudia to Germany! Nicely avoiding the winter but unfortunately also DIY Deco. Although there are still a few of us around to come out and play. DIY Deco certainly seems to be growing and this year we our friends the Steampunker’s back to enjoy some more events and have hired three our our old gals for a self drive experience on the Saturday so if you see them out and about do give them a Hoot and a wave. We love teaching people how to drive these beautiful cars and for those that have never driven a true vintage car it’s certainly a memorable experience and who knows we could be helping to create the next generation of vintage cars owners. Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

The complete restoration of the 1925 Studebaker is now well underway with the local guys at The Panel Surgery and Colourwood doing a fantastic job of getting the bare bones back together. Couple of pics showing the project below.
