De los varios oficios que se necesitan para producir un habano, el de torcedor seguramente sea de los más emblemáticos. La visita de un representante del gremio llegado de Cuba nos brindó la oportunidad de experimentar por un rato esta ocupación maravillosa. Great skillfulness is put into producing a good cigar; the hand-roller is probably an icon in the industry. Someone representing the trade came from Cuba to show us briefly what this wonderful technique is all about.

ocas cosas despiertan más la imaginación, debidamente febril y tropical, del aficionado a los habanos que observar cómo desgrana su oficio un torcedor. Sentado en su banco frente a las hojas de tabaco noble, su trabajo será el paso definitivo para traer al mundo los puros que tanto disfrutamos. Con sus más y sus menos, el de torcedor ha sido históricamente un puesto privilegiado, que gozó de prestigio y que supo conquistar para sus representantes un lugar de príncipes dentro de la industria tabacalera. Cierto es que son el último eslabón en la cadena de 31 procesos que habrán de acabar en la blanca ceniza al extremo del objeto de devoción del fumador. Ante todo, y con el debido respeto a Mérimée y Bizet, terminemos con el simpático mito de que los muslos de las mulatas son el mejor lugar donde enrollar un puro. Zonas firmes y sedosas donde cualquier varón depositaría su mirada y por qué no su tacto, nada tienen que ver con la única superficie idónea para ejercer la misión del torcedor.
