illingshurst’s high street is in a state of flux at present with Budgens closed pending the opening of Sainsbury’s on the same site. And, directly opposite, construction of Morrisons is underway. Opinions are divided as to what effect these two supermarket ‘giants’ will have on the village. Time will tell. One thing is for certain: we still have many shops in the high street and Jengers Mead which are very much open for business and offering excellent value as well as that personal touch!

Out and about

Loxwood Beer & Music Festival – Saturday 16th May

G

ates open at 1pm on Saturday 16th May for the 15th Loxwood Beer and Music Festival with nine superb bands performing a wide variety of music, an array of beers, ciders and wine, delicious BBQ, raffle prizes and fun for all the kids. Willie Austen, who needs no introduction, will kick things off at 1.45pm followed by the wonderful Catfish, a blues band with rock overtones, experienced musicians and a talented young guitarist – not to be missed! A real highlight will be Red Butler. Led by Alex Butler they were voted ‘Best New UK Act 2014’ (Blues Matters Magazine). Their debut album has been very favourably reviewed. Red Butler performs with fire and intensity as part of a new generation of British rock/blues – well received all over the country. Up next are The Worry Dolls – feisty, energetic, highly talented and driven to write music that compares with their heroes. Emma Baldry has a voice that could send a house crashing to the floor with one chorus – an exciting new band attracting a lot of attention. Aimée – now ably supported by her brother and sister, has played numerous festivals across the country including the Isle of Wight and Cornbury – a welcome

8

return to Loxwood. Asylum Affair have built up a great reputation as being one of the best, most fully booked, classic rock cover bands around – get your air guitar tuned and don’t miss out! Throbbin Hood will entertain you with their own brand of pop, rock and dodgy Red Butler lyrics! Expect dancing twin Photo: Rockrpix guitarists, all sorts of on-stage antics and loads of great ‘choons’. Then what can we say really… Iron Tyger will quite simply batter you with 80s rock, combined with a catalogue of iconic tunes which has prompted sparkling responses from audiences across the UK – do not miss them! Tickets are just £10 in advance (including a free drink) or £12 on the day. Children are £6 which includes unlimited access to bouncy castles and fun activities. Under 1’s are free. Health and wellbeing

— a place to keep an eye on!

M

any older people don’t need to be ‘taken care of’, but would still greatly benefit from being ‘kept an eye on’. Sometimes a parent living far away would benefit from a little more attention than before, but remains a long way from requiring full-time care or a place in a nursing home. The quandary for the family is what can best be done to maintain that person’s independence but at the same time make life easier for everyone. Moving an elderly relative to live closer to the family is one solution, but what accommodation is appropriate? Finding small properties locally where older people can live independently at a reasonable cost can be a challenge. There may be a local solution at Hawkridge in Rudgwick, where there are current vacancies. Hawkridge offers flats for rent near the church in Rudgwick for older people who wish to retain their independence, but who also value the peace and security that sheltered housing can afford. Each flat at Hawkridge has en-suite bathroom facilities and its own kitchen, and there is access to communal facilities including spacious grounds. It is run by a small charitable housing association set up specifically for the purpose of providing sheltered retirement accommodation. Hawkridge has a reputation as a warm and friendly

‘home’, as people living here tend to consider themselves as ‘residents’ rather than as tenants, and the sense of community is very strong. Technically, of course, Hawkridge isn’t a ‘home’ in the sense of a nursing or care home, although support is provided by staff and a comprehensive careline alarm system. Tenancies at Hawkridge are offered to elderly people with a connection to Rudgwick and the surrounding area. In many cases, that connection is fulfilled when an elderly relative of a local person moves to be closer to a local family. Many have come to live at Hawkridge to be near their relatives from many parts of the country, even as far away as Scotland. The majority of our flats at Hawkridge accommodate one person, although a few can accommodate a retired couple, and we warmly welcome applications for current vacancies. If you or a relative would benefit from moving to sheltered accommodation locally, or you would simply like to know more about Hawkridge, please get in touch with us. We look forward to hearing from you. Rob Wild, Secretary Hawkridge Housing Association Hawkridge, Cox Green, Rudgwick, RH12 3DE Telephone: (01403) 822038 Email: committee@hawkridge.plus.com

A couple of knock-out matches precede the first league matches on 9th May, when Billingshurst 1st XI will step up to play at the highest amateur level this year. The 2nd and 3rd XIs also have a full fixture programme, while an Academy XI will play regular Sunday fixtures for the first time in a number of years. And the club is looking forward to a fantastic day on 12th July when big hitting, fast bowling England and Sussex legend Luke Wright will bring a Sussex XI to Jubilee Fields as part of his testimonial year. Whether he can put that experience to good effect and defeat a determined Billingshurst XI remains to be seen! As well as the 25 over-a-side match, there will be plenty going on throughout the day, including children's cricket coaching, an auction/raffle, entertainment, refreshments and, of course, the opportunity to meet Sussex mascot, Sid the Shark! The focus will be on children, families and the promotion of cricket in our area. The youth cricket section is important at Billingshurst and one which the club is looking to develop. There are

regular training sessions with the club’s coaches and teams represent the village at under-9s to under-14s. Many of today’s 1st and 2nd XI players have come through the youth teams and this is something that the club would like to repeat in the future. All youngsters regardless of ability are encouraged to join. While the club has had a number of successful seasons, we are keen to build and develop further. Potential players, spectators, umpires, scorers and anyone interested in becoming involved in the club will always be made welcome. Billingshurst’s Jubilee Fields ground will also be hosting other fixtures of note this season including Sussex Ladies against Nottinghamshire Ladies on 21st June and Sussex U15s competing in a two-day game against Yorkshire on 10th & 11th August. For further information on becoming involved in Cricket at Billingshurst please contact Chris on (01403) 782072. Book reviews / Health and wellbeing

A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Poison Tree – Erin Kelly Finding your way in the world after leaving school can be daunting, and for Karen this is no different. A language student at a college in London she has a chance encounter with Biba, an exotic and bohemian student, and Karen’s life will never be the same again. Biba lives with her brother Rex in a crumbling gothic-style townhouse in London, with a lifestyle that could not be further from the suburban humdrum that Karen grew up in. She is drawn to these two siblings and so begins a summer of freedom, cheap wine, experimental drugs and sexual adventures. The lure of Biba’s personality is tremendous and Karen clearly aspires to be like her. Then, one day, their idyllic summer comes crashing to a halt. Karen learns the truth of Biba and Rex’s family life and an unexpected visitor leads to tragedy. A more mature Karen looks back on the events of that summer ten years later as she comes to terms with her role in everything. As a reader, you know from the start that something is going to happen. Like a car crash in slow motion you can see it coming as Karen absorbs more and more of Biba’s exotic nature. Yet, when the author brings things to a climax you are thrown, dazed and shocked, along with Karen, in a debut novel that will stay with you long after you close it for the final time.

The Maze Runner – James Dashner Post-apocalyptic and dystopian literature seems to be all the rage in the Young Adult fiction market these days. Hot on the heels of the successful Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies comes The Maze Runner. Initially published in 2009 it came to prominence with the release of the film adaptation in 2014. Thomas is a teenager who awakes to find himself in a box in a place called the Glade. He has no memory of who he is or how he came to be here, but he is thrown into this new community, and as a reader so are you. Before long you become familiar with the terminology used by the boys and you feel as if you are a Glader along with them. As Thomas adjusts to his new home he learns about the Maze which surrounds the Glade. Each day the walls open and a select group of runners spend daylight hours exploring and mapping it. It is a race against the clock because at sunset the Grievers – giant robotic creatures – enter the Maze and they are deadly. The walls close to protect the community and overnight the structure of the Maze changers, leaving the runners to start again in the morning. The big mystery is why. Why are Thomas and the other boys there and why do the Grievers come out to get them? Why do the walls in the Maze change and will the runners ever solve it? More importantly why has a girl been sent to the Glade and why has all communication with the outside world suddenly stopped?

Massed choir sings for a little girl called Rowan

O

ver 300 musicians are coming together to raise money for local charity the Rainbow Trust, inspired by a very special little girl. Rowan Todd, who lives in Guildford, was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was just five years old and she and her family have been supported by the Rainbow Trust throughout years of treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Rowan’s dad, Will, is an internationally-recognised composer, whose Mass in Blue has been performed all over the world, and is a well-known figure in Guildford. Will also composed The Call of Wisdom for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and his work The City Garden will feature in this grand charity concert, which takes place at Guildford Cathedral on 23rd May. You can find out more about Will’s music at www.willtodd.com. “This is a charity that is so close to my heart, said Todd. “I would love to see the cathedral packed full so that we can raise as much money as possible to keep this wonderful work going strong. Over 300 musicians, including Guildford’s Vivace Chorus, Salisbury Community Choir, London

chamber choir Vasari singers and Surrey’s orchestra, Southern Pro Musica, will come together to perform Will’s music, alongside Bob Chilcott’s The Salisbury Vespers. They will be joined by a specially-created children’s choir, called ‘Rowan’s Choir’ with singers from Tormead School, Queen Eleanor’s Junior School and George Abbot School. Conductor Jeremy Backhouse is looking forward to a concert full of toe-tapping jazzy music and the power of massed-group singing: “As the conductor of all three of the adult choirs taking part, it’s amazing to be able to bring so many musicians together for this fantastic cause,â€? he said. “Both Will’s and Bob’s music is modern, easy to listen to and will send the audience away with the tunes ringing in their ears.â€? Organisers are expecting a full house, with all proceeds going towards the valuable work of the Rainbow Trust. Tickets, priced from ÂŁ16 to ÂŁ28 are available from www.vivacechorus.org and the Guildford Tourist Information Centre on 01483 444334.

Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ Well, well, well – an Oil/Gas victory!

M

arch 11th is a date to be remembered by the villagers of Kirdford and Wisborough Green. Celtique Energie, the Oil/Gas company which had applied to construct an Exploratory well in a field to the south of Boxal Bridge threw in the towel. On their website they announced that they were withdrawing from the Appeal which had been announced in October 2014 and thus the Public Inquiry due to start in September 2015 against the unanimous decision made by the West Sussex Planning Committee on 22nd July. They also decided not to appeal against the unanimous decision made by the South Downs National Park Planning Committee on 11th September at Fernhurst located within the National Park. So, instead of the Information Session planned to be held in the Village Hall on 24th March where KKWG intended to update people on the Appeal and our need for assistance… the event became a celebratory party instead. The hall was decked with bunting, lighting erected, suitable music chosen, much food and wine produced and local TV star and author Sue Jameson (pictured) welcomed a packed hall including Stuart Clark who originally set up the local group objecting to the proposal. Both Parish Council chairs which had also unanimously opposed the application attended beaming from ear to ear and the Planning Advocate, Richard Bate, retained by KKWG to lead our contribution at the Public Inquiry came over from Kent to join in the fun. Why, after making such an investment would the company decide to withdraw? At a packed meeting in the same hall in January 2014 attended by local MP Rt Hon Nick Herbert, who has been a stalwart opponent of the proposal on this site throughout, the Chief Executive of Celtique Energie Geoff

Davies said, “The site is not perfect”. Well, we knew that. The arguments presented by KKWG pointed to the extremely faulted geology in the Weald identified by four eminent and independent geologists, to the difficulty – nay, impossibility – of getting HGVs safely down the access to the proposed site and the likely associated damage to the roads, the impacts on the local community including the route through the Conservation Area, the disruption and the noise, let alone the threats to the local wildlife such as the very rare Barbastelle bats making use of the site to get to their food. Recent research points to industrial noise driving away the rarer wildlife species and our very special tranquil area was under threat. While the company have retreated from this site they do have permission to investigate and are busy constructing a drill site at Broadford Bridge near the crossroads at Adversane. The rig is due to arrive shortly. KKWG plans to continue and to assist other groups. A group of members plan to fund (with separate money, i.e. not that kindly donated to support the work needed to participate in the Public Inquiry) the Wildlife expert witness to carry out rare bat surveys he was intending to do in and around the Sussex Wildlife Trust site at Northup Copse as part of his evidence. So, THANK YOU everyone who has contributed. Such an outcome can only be achieved by a committed and hard working opposition. The Parish, District and County Councils played their part. Thank you to all of you who have signed and sent an Objection card, written letters, contributed money, spotted important evidence, attended a range of meetings, spoken to neighbours, learned about these issues and displayed signs objecting. Slinfold Concert Band returns to the Capitol

S

linfold Concert Band is returning to the Capitol in Horsham in May, after a three-year absence. With a concert entitled ‘Listen to the Band’, the band hopes to raise money for two local charities, AgeUK Horsham District, and Horsham Hospital League of Friends. The Band has supported the League of Friends for several years through fund-raising events, and by playing at their annual Summer Fête, and the League will be running the raffle at the Capitol. This year the Band is pleased also to support AgeUK Horsham District, to whom they will donate the profits from the concert. Slinfold Concert Band has been entertaining audiences in the South East for many years, and following a sell-out concert in Billingshurst in November last year, ‘Listen to the Band’ will provide another opportunity to hear the band in a programme of memorable melodies under the baton of MD Christopher Newport.

What a load of rubbish What YOU can do to make our countryside litter-free

A

rmed with a black bag and gardening gloves, and on a pleasant spring morning, I took the road from Wisborough Green to Kirdford and picked up all the litter I could find. Alas, just half a mile into the walk and my bag was nearly bursting… In that short distance I had collected the following: 19 glass bottles (all alcohol related) 10 drinks cans 8 cigarette packets 6 plastic bottles 2 carrier bags of general rubbish It saddens me to see the countryside in this way. If you feel the same way, what can we do to help? For information and inspiration please see: •  www.litterheroes.com (sound advice on how you can safely collect litter in your area).

•  www.litteraction.org.uk •  Read about other litter pickers in the area – Google David Sedaris, for example – the American humorist and writer has been picking up litter in Sussex ever since moving here to live. •  Our main roads are particularly bad – email your views and observations to the Department of Transport at dftcomplaints@dft.gsi.gov.uk •  See ‘Bill Bryson’s litter problems’ clips on www.youtube.com (First shown on BBC’s Panorama in 2008). A great walk with a great cause, take action and become a silent hero doing your bit to make the world a nicer place. As with any walk a pub at the end normally acts as a good motivator. Hope to see you around! Carol Archbold

New Compasses Bridge approved

R

estoration of a historic waterway in Surrey is being stepped up now plans for the key part of the project have been approved. Planning permission for a new bridge just granted by Waverley Borough Council will enable more than a mile of the Wey & Arun Canal to be re-opened for use by small boats. (Also see February’s Village Tweet.) The bridge is to be built at one of the entrances to Dunsfold Aerodrome, at the end of Three Compasses Lane in Alfold, replacing a wartime concrete causeway which currently blocks the waterway. It is part of Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s plan to revive the 19th Century canal between Tickner’s Heath in Dunsfold and Fast Bridge on the A281 at Alfold, its first navigation restoration project in Surrey. Trust director Tony Ford, a chartered civil engineer with extensive experience of designing roads and bridges, is in charge of the project. He aims to have contractors starting the work next month. “The planning permission for the bridge, and realigning the road, means most of what we need for the restoration in this section of the canal is in place,” said Mr Ford. “We have already done extensive work in de-silting and re-profiling the canal and now work can start on the new bridge. This represents a big step forward in the trust’s overall restoration project.” The construction teams and volunteer working parties

will be based in a compound made available by the aerodrome owner, Dunsfold Park. With the bridge ready for use and the causeway demolished, small boats, canoes and kayaks will be able to travel freely for 1.25 miles in a ‘green corridor’ that will also benefit other countryside enthusiasts. Volunteers will be enhancing and protecting flora and fauna through landscaping the canal banks and installing bat and bird nesting boxes in trees. A viewing platform and interpretation area will also be installed next to the bridge. It is hoped to officially re-open the restored section next year in time for the 200th anniversary of the northern part of the 23-mile long canal being declared open at the Compasses site in September 1816. Although much of the work to be carried out by contractors is fully funded, around £280,000 is still needed to complete the £700,000 restoration project. Allow me to introduce… Dingo

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

V

ery late in January, a very large parcel was delivered. On a pallet and swathed in black plastic it looked impressive, and huge. “It’s arrived,” announced Grandad. “Mmm,” replied Nanny who was sick in bed. “That’s nice.” Then she turned over and went back to sleep. Later she couldn't resist a glance out the bathroom window. Dingo had arrived and looked very bulky indeed. The next day Grandad took a pair of scissors and unwrapped Dingo and carefully put loads of black plastic in the bin. He gulped as he surveyed how big Dingo was. Then he checked Dingo over. No bumps scratches or dings. He checked all the other things that needed checking. Nanny was barely aware of any of this, still holed up in her dark bedroom feeling like death warmed up. Finally Grandad came storming in. “I’ve tried everything!” he shouted, throwing the instructions Man and machine down on the table in a bad temper. That afternoon the following email was sent to the suppliers: “My Dingo arrived yesterday. Great shipping and delivery service. Unpacked it today, filled with petrol all set to go. Great excitement. And then the key wouldn’t turn in the ignition. Great sadness. Nothing working. Can someone please contact me on Monday morning to see if we can sort it out?” The reply was prompt: “Sorry, we will get onto it first thing Monday.” Nanny felt better on Monday as she waited patiently and waited even more patiently but… you got it… Nothing! Finally she rang. “Not in Yet. Will ring later.” More patient waiting. 4.30pm. Nanny rings again. “So sorry… dah di daah di da…” Finally a solution to the

problem was described and Nanny listened carefully, and went back to bed. Next morning when Grandad had finished the shopping Nanny crawled out of bed, wrapped up warm and they both went out into the bitter cold to tackle The Problem. First, with Rob the Gardening Man and Main Helping Person, Dingo was pushed undercover. Next Nanny undid some bolts and dropped one into the straw. Having finally found it they put a cloth under Dingo to catch others. Good thing they did too. For there were others. They got the plastic cover off. What was next? Nanny couldn’t remember. Ring the dealers, and after being entertained with music and ads, the nice man explained what to do again. They did it. The key turned. Dingo barked into life just like his namesake. After a bloody knuckle was plastered and a few “Bothers” uttered, the nuts in perfect harmony… and bolts were found and replaced. But now the key wouldn’t turn again! A few stronger “Bothers” were expressed forcefully until Grandad pushed a wee brass button and “Voila!” the key turned, After Grandad worked out how to put Dingo into gear, he put his frozen foot on the accelerator and carefully steered Dingo down the driveway. He was as happy as a boy on his new toy and smiled his ‘Grandad smile’. Nanny went back to bed shivering and exhausted. Nanny didn’t get her turn until about two weeks later when she finally was able to totter out of bed. She hoped Dingo would enjoy working on the little farm in Billingshurst. Time will tell… Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

Daux Wood Area, This uniquely designed modern built family home offers spacious accommodation with some clever architectural features. As you approach the property, there is a drive way large enough to accommodate parking for four vehicles with access to the rear garden on both sides of the house. There is access to the integral garage. The entrance hall is laid to wood flooring with under floor heating which continues through the ground floor areas including the kitchen/breakfast room and sitting room. It’s the kitchen/dining room that is perhaps the most impressive feature of the accommodation. There are byfolding doors that concertina open to link the space up with the garden for summer entertaining. This is a vast space and offers scope for an upgraded kitchen, although there is a gas point and space for a cooking range and plumbing for the dishwasher set below a simple work surface. There is a utility room which has a door to the side access, plumbing for the washing machine and a sink inset to a work surface unit with some wall mounted storage cupboards. The sitting room is a bright and spacious room with views to the front of the property. It is accessed from the large L-shaped hall which has stairs rising to the first floor and a ground floor W.C. at the far end. The first floor offers generously proportioned bedrooms; two equally sized double bedrooms have front aspect and are serviced by the family bathroom. The bathroom does not have a suite fitted at the current time; however our vendors inform us that the supplies and waste plumbing is in place. There is also a built in storage cupboard on the landing which has a side

, Billingshurst aspect window giving natural light. The master bedroom is big, with a rear aspect view over the garden and two double wardrobes that are built in to create a central recess that would be ideal for a television or dressing table. There is an en-suite shower room with W.C. and working shower cubicle. The second bedroom also looks over the garden and has a built in storage cupboard. There is an en-suite room with shower tray fitted, although the room is not finished with units, again we are led to believe the plumbing is in place. From the landing there is a door to an inner lobby where the stairs rise to the superb top floor space which would make an excellent master or guest suite. The main room measures in excess of 30ft and the floor space measurement is in excess of 13ft. There are two rear aspect windows, one being a dormer and the other a Velux style. There is an opening leading through to a lovely pitched Apex with a circular window to front aspect. The head height at its maximum in this area is 6ft 1 and the ceiling slopes on either side. The top floor is serviced by a fully functioning en-suite shower room with W.C. and wash hand basin, there is a rear aspect window. The rear garden is mainly laid to lawn with an unmade patio base. There is a pretty mature tree sitting in the center of the garden which is enclosed by panel fencing. There is a large garden shed. This property is perfectly positioned for anybody commuting from Billingshurst railway station and is situated in the ever popular Daux Wood area of south Billingshurst. There is a local convenience store within walking distance and lots of dog walks abound.

Billingshurst Dramatic Society presents ‘Country Dances’

I

n the May half-term, the Billingshurst Dramatic Society will present Country Dances by Ann Gawthorpe and Lesley Brown. The play is a farce set in the ’seventies, when Formica worktops were the height of fashion. Emily Hetherington and her husband move to a picturesque country village, expecting to educate the locals in cultural pursuits. Funnily enough, the locals have their lives under control, including Thomas, who has been using the right of way through the Hetherington’s newly landscaped garden to herd his cows for decades. Rehearsals have been great fun with the script providing the giggles, and the logistics of where half the Formica kitchen ends up being decided by director Caro Anderson, in her directorial debut for the society. The cast is made up of old and new members alike, with a very busy backstage crew! Our first production of the year is usually in the February half-term, but everybody’s schedules conspired against that happening this year hence the

May date. It has meant turning up to rehearsals in daylight which is a welcome change, and this play, Country Dances, is almost like a Maypole dance of a farce, with characters weaving in and out of the story trying desperately not to get tied in knots. With people’s busy schedules, new members are always welcome whether their interests lie backstage or on stage. We are planning on some informal play readings during the summer, and then our next production will be in the October halfterm. Contact us via our website or follow us on Twitter or Facebook if you would like to find out more. Performances at the Women’s Hall in Billingshurst on Thursday 28th May to 30th Saturday May at 7.45pm. Tickets £8 from Mansell McTaggarts, High Street, Billingshurst (no phone calls please). www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com @BilliDramaSoc Rebecca Cooper Photo: the cast rehearsing for Country Dances

Garden View

Chelsea: 19th-23rd May

T

he Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion. Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watereddown version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the ’forties and decking in the ’eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land. In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day… Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavilion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes. Chelsea draws over 150,000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over five days instead of four, such is its popularity.

The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breathtaking. Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize-winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia. Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come. Rachel Leverton

The Pig John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

O

nce upon a time, long long ago, there was an age when it was possible to acquire certain items of livestock by just enjoying a pleasant afternoon on a village green. At many a fête children would leave for home clutching a plastic bag in their hands in which a solitary goldfish would announce to the world that it had been the reluctant reward at the hoopla stall. Nowadays we have realised that this is not the best way to introduce animals to the family. The lowly goldfish was not the only creature that you could win at such events in times gone by. There was another beast that you could also acquire at one of the regular stalls if Lady Luck should beam down at you. This was from the aptly named ‘Bowling for the pig’… You have to remember that a lot of the folk taking part in the village fêtes in those days would have been involved in the farming communities that surrounded the area. So to offer a small piglet as a prize was not something that would appear unusual to most of those present. Well, one year I won the little squealer. Ok, it was probably donated by a farmer who was only too pleased to be rid of the runt of some litter that his sow had produced, thus saving him many hours hand-feeding the little creature as well as not having to wait far longer for it to reach a marketable weight. I was 17 years old at the time and living in digs. Thankfully the farmer I was working for allowed me the use of a stable to house the little gilt (young female) and so a love story was born. Anyone who has come into close contact with pigs will tell you that there are few animals that can compare with the intelligence and shear personality that porkers can possess. I spent hours wondering what to call her, and plumped in the end to settle with the inventive title of ‘Pig’. There followed weeks of feeding household waste and copious quantities of skimmed milk from the farm’s dairy to the growing beastie. Pig was glorious. Greeting anyone who entered the farm yard by standing on stumpy trotters to look over the top of the half-door to her private quarters. How she could see was a mystery on its own. Her massive ears flopped completely over her face with just her constantly twitching snout poking

34

forward in anticipation of something edible being brought forth. Like all pigs her appetite was insatiable. Food would be consumed with much squealing and chomping and very little display of decorum. After feeding, and once the whole pen had been examined for any stray piece of food that may have taken the opportunity to escape, she would then expect to be taken down to the paddock for her daily exercise. First, though, a thorough scratching of her head and back would bring forth a steady grunting of contentment along with much noisy lip smacking and ear flapping. As the summer progressed the heat built up and I made a muddy wallow at the lower end of the paddock. This was enjoyed greatly as a pig’s skin is surprisingly delicate and can suffer sun burn quite easily, so the glutinous mud acted like a sunscreen as well as a cooling salve. Although this wallow resulted in her being coated in sticky black mud I was very aware that pigs on the whole are very clean creatures, it’s just their owners who so often leave them in conditions where the poor animals have little option but slosh around in filth and muck. Given a clean bed and room to move, they will always try to contain their ‘spoil’ to one area. Modern farrowing pens are built so that there is a passage at the back of the pen that can be isolated to make cleaning easier. This was so the pigs could leave their bedding area spoil-free if they had the inclination. At college I once witnessed a recently farrowed sow literally throw one of her piglets into the dung passage at the rear of their pen when the youngster started to foul the bedding straw. It was this event that showed me that of all the farm animals pigs are by far the cleanest in basic habits. Not a statement that is easy to agree with when you view them in their squelchy mud wallows I know. So, at last Pig grew too large for her stable, and with great sadness I passed her on to a local farmer to add to his herd of Large Whites. She had given me so many months of pleasure, taught me how intelligent her species were, and although I have not worked with pigs since, she made sure that these grunting, squealing, slobbering, and oh so knowing beasts remain my favourite farm animals to this day. hat are you and your family doing on Saturday 13th June? Why not put this date in your diary now, to ensure you do not miss out on a fun day for all the family. This annual village event provides an enjoyable day for all the villagers as well as raising money for local good causes, such as the Church, North Hall, Loxwood School, the North Singers, Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative and any other organisations who would like to apply for funding. Last year we distributed almost £5,000 to these worthy causes. What is new this year? We have managed to acquire three donkeys for the day who will be giving rides to young children for a very moderate fee. Within the children’s area we will have a Punch and Judy Show, Balloon Man, Bouncy Castle and a small roundabout. These attractions will be free to the children. For your entertainment and refreshment we will again have the Slinfold Concert Band in attendance, the Loxwood School Choir, the North Singers as well as a display of classic cars, a barbecue, bar and tea and cakes in the Hall. For the rest of the family, we will have many varied stalls selling a variety of products, as well as our old favourites, such as China Smash, Splat the Rat, Beer

Slide, Skittles, Tombola and our Grand Draw which will again feature many valuable prizes. Our Fun Dog Show will be held during the afternoon, featuring many different fun classes for your prized pooch. Entry will be on the day, however, programmes showing the classes will be delivered nearer the time. CAN YOU HELP US? As in previous years we would appreciate help and support either prior to the Fête or on the day. The areas where help is required are: Helping set up the fête Running a stall for a couple of hours on the day Donation of prizes for the Tombola Donation of prizes for the Raffle Secondhand books Baking a cake WOULD YOUR ORGANISATION LIKE TO APPLY FOR FUNDING? If so, please apply to Hugh Kersey at hugh.kersey@btinternet.com or telephone (01403) 752871 stating who and what the money will be used for. If you would like to help in any way, please contact either Len Milsom 752032, Graham Moore 751722, or Peter Winney 752377 Graham Moore Photo of Bella and Brody by Grahame Pearson

Words, words, everywhere at Billingshurst Primary School

W

hy use one word when over a 1,000 will do? The children of Billingshurst Primary School became master wordsmiths this week and demonstrated the power of words by raising over £400 in the ‘Word in a Word’ competition. The fundraiser, sponsored by Village Tweet, set pupils the challenge of finding as many words as possible using the letters from the school’s name ‘Billingshurst Primary School’. The competition results surprised everyone with the winner from Key Stage 2, Emily-Jane Harman, finding 1,079 words. The winner from Key Stage 1 was Keira Oxley with 354 words. Prizes were also awarded for the best anagram of ‘my school is brilliant’, most money raised, longest and most unusual words. Edie Golding from Year 2 raised an outstanding £125 for 188 words and discovered the twelve-letter show-stopping word scholarships. The most unusual words uncovered were imbroglio and glycosuria, both worthy prize-winning entries, causing

some to reach for their dictionaries. The competition is part of the school’s Year of Writing which has already produced some outstanding work from the children, inspired by a number of exciting projects; from story competitions and an author visit to a guest appearance from a knight in shining armour. Mrs Claire Wilson, English Leader, commented, “We are incredibly proud of the time and effort the children put into the ‘Word in a Word’ competition and at the diverse range and sheer volume of words discovered. The challenge has been a fantastic way of encouraging the children to develop their vocabulary, while working alongside parents and grandparents to really stretch their linguistic knowledge and encourage some healthy competition.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA Photo: Emily Jane Harman (left) and Edie Golding, winners of the ‘Word in the Word’ competition

Little Russets Open Day Saturday 13th June 10.00-12.00

L

ittle Russets Nursery in Slinfold were delighted to have been awarded a prestigious grant of £22,000 by West Sussex County Council’s Be the Business to enable them to build an additional classroom for their nursery. As a result of this children are now able to enjoy another fabulous and stimulating environment at Little Russets. With floor to ceiling windows letting in lots of light, children may look directly out into the woods to watch different species of birds feeding and nesting in numerous feeders and boxes that have been hung from the trees surrounding their classroom. The building was designed to include a sheltered balcony which provides a relaxing area in which children may enjoy an outdoor snack or meal, whatever the weather! The nursery, founded in November 2008 by Carol Rawnsley, has developed a reputation as an outstanding outdoor nursery that believes that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing! Children and babies arrive each morning in their outdoor suits and wellies ready to go and explore the surrounding woodland and lawns at Little Russets. For babies and beginners to the great

outdoors, this new room called The Zen offers a warm and homely feel in which children can still reap the rewards of a natural environment around them. As well as birds, children are able to watch the rabbits chasing each other, squirrels climbing and leaping from branch to branch and the occasional deer. After a morning of different activities, all the children meet up at lunch time to share a hot meal together, especially cooked for them by local caterers Café Du Van. After this, it’s time to settle down for a quiet time, or an outdoor nap in one of many coach-built prams, in preparation for burning off more energy whilst playing and exploring later on in the afternoon! Little Russets will be having an Open Day on Saturday 13th June from 10.00-12.00. Please visit their website www.littlerussets.co.uk for more information. Carol Rawnsley

N

ow the warmer weather is here at last many horse owners will be keen to take their horse to some shows and competitions or even for some hacking in an exciting new place. Having access to horse transport is very liberating but what do you do if your horse is not quite as keen to travel as you are? Reluctant loaders can be extremely frustrating for their owners. You need to find out why the horse is reluctant to load; some may have had a previous bad experience travelling and may be nervous to repeat the experience. Some horses will travel happily in a lorry but not a trailer or vice versa. If possible try a different mode of transport and see if things improve. Consider removing partitions in trailers and fitting full-length breast and breech bars, this gives the horse much more room in which to place his feet and find his balance. One of mine likes to stand diagonally in the trailer and travels very happily like this! In lorries you should be able to adjust the partitions to suit the horse, and many horses prefer the herringbone set-up of a lorry. Also make sure your horse is not intimidated by his travel companions. Horses being prey animals are naturally wary of being in small, confined spaces and to successfully load and transport your horse in a lorry or trailer needs a high level of trust on his part. The key to success is being calm and patient. The first thing to do is to check your transport is safe and roadworthy. Check the floor very carefully for any signs of wear and tear or corrosion. Wooden floors can be affected by getting damp and can end up with dangerous soft areas. Also check ramps are safe and secure, and that there is nothing loose on the vehicle either inside or out that could cause problems when travelling the horse. Trailers really should be serviced by a competent person on at least an annual basis. Lorries will be subject to a plating test every year to make sure they are roadworthy, but if in any doubt – get it checked! Make sure the transport is large enough for the horse, and make sure there is enough head room too. Make sure your driving is up to a good standard. It

only takes one bad journey to put a horse off travelling. If you are not used to driving a horsebox or towing a trailer take the vehicle or combination out empty a few times first so you can get a feel of how the vehicle feels handling wise before travelling your horse. Gear changes must be smooth and consistent as must braking and accelerating. Cornering will be vastly different to a smaller vehicle and adding the weight of a horse on board will make the vehicle feel different too. Imagine you have a full glass of water on your dashboard when you are transporting your horse and you don’t want to spill any! Check your horse is comfortable in his travel boots. Some of the stiffer styles while offering great protection can make the horse feel a little restricted and worry him during loading or travel, likewise boots that are too big can slip and cause the horse to panic. With young, inexperienced or nervous horses make loading a normal part of the daily routine. With trailers that are equipped with front and rear ramps you can practise walking the horse through the trailer and then include some standing on board for short amounts of time. Feeding your horse in the trailer or lorry can also help the horse become accustomed to his transport. With difficult loaders doing lots and lots of groundwork can be extremely beneficial in aiding the handler to be able to control the horse’s movement and to gain his respect and trust. There is no point in getting into a fight with a bad loader – you will not win a battle of strength and you or the horse may end up getting injured. If you do manage to get the horse in with rough handling he is even more unlikely to repeat the experience next time you try to load him! With a very difficult horse consider enlisting some expert help. There are some Natural Horsemanship practitioners that have an excellent record in dealing with difficult loaders. Happy Travels until next month. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Cottage Farm Dog Rescue hosted Spring Dog Walk

T

he weather wasn’t at its best but it wasn’t at its worst either for our Sniff Out Spring doggy walk. We had a good turn-out of people, dogs and children who all enjoyed a nice ramble and the delicious bacon butties and home-made cake afterwards. People were very generous and we made a nice profit of £207 at the final count. As you can imagine, the Rescue has many costs to meet including vet, food, blankets, collars and leads. These are met in part by dog adoption fees, donations and fund raising activities: we personally guarantee any shortfall. So we are very grateful, on behalf of the dogs, for any help we can get. We love seeing the dogs at these events too – pictured is Winston. He has recently gone to his new home so it was lovely to see him, and some of our other dogs, on the walk. Our next fund raiser is a Fun Dog Show and Spring Fair on 7th June at Rudgwick Village Hall, Bucks Green (off the A281 Guildford Road). The doors open at 10am so you can find fantastic bargains from over 20 traders. The dog show starts at 2pm, any dog can enter. We can go inside if the weather is bad.

Classes: Best Rescue Dog, Cutest Puppy, Best Terrier Type, Most Handsome Dog, Best Lurcher/whippet/ greyhound type, Prettiest Bitch, Staffordshire bull terrier type, Best Junior Handler, Best mixed breed, Best Golden Oldie. And the Obedient Dog Challenge! The winners of each class can compete for the Championship Trophy! A Handy Dog ring will be open too where you can have fun with a small obstacle course and hunt the treat! The emphasis is on FUN and wonderful homemade refreshments will be served all day. All proceeds go to the Rescue. Would you like to help? We’re currently looking for volunteer dog walkers who can help with the rehabilitation of our dogs so they are ready for their new lives. Training given – if you’re interested, please send an email with your contact details and availability to cottagefarmdogrescue@outlook.com Caroline Fisher www.cottagefarmdogrescue.co.uk

Cottage Farm Pet Boarding

Training has been shown to be the single most important thing that keeps a dog in his or her “forever” home.

Our dog boarding provides an alternative to kennel for small to medium size dogs who will live in our home as part of the family. We have large secure gardens and paddocks where dogs can relax or run and play. So they don't get bored, our visitors enjoy three walks a day through beautiful local countryside where for their security they will walk on the lead. Also boarding for guinea pigs and rabbits.

site is quite important. In Google’s view, it’s very important. Hence the update. A couple of points: Firstly, your site won’t be downgraded in the rankings if it’s not responsive but other more mobile friendly sites may get a boost over you. Not a major problem at first but if all your competitors get mobile friendly sites then it could be. And, secondly, those using their ‘traditional’ desktop to search for things on the Internet won’t have their results affected by the update and your website will rank in the results where it always used to (all other things being equal). Again not a major problem but when the majority of the world goes truly mobile, it will be. So, although this is being seen as a big thing in the tech world and especially the Internet, the actual immediate impact won’t be that huge, especially for the smaller business. However, given that most small businesses don’t have the budget to constantly spend out on their website, it makes sense that if you are thinking of getting a new website or updating the one you have, to make sure it is a mobile friendly one and get ahead of your competitors now. But in this case it’s more like ‘It’s all on the go’ as Google’s recent mobile responsive update begins to make it presence felt… Whether you have a website or not, like most people, you’ll begin your search for information online, and usually with Google. You type in what you are searching for and, hey presto!, Google presents you with what it thinks are the most suitable results for you. Now Google has announced one of its most significant updates in some time: the mobile responsive update. Essentially, and we are trying to keep it simple here, if your website doesn’t adapt how it looks when someone views it on a phone or tablet (rather than a desktop or laptop) then other sites similar to yours but that are mobile friendly may get a boost over yours as to where they appear in the search engine results. The reason? Well, more and more of us are using mobile devices online and having a site that can tell what sort of device your visitor is on and then switch to the most suitable version of your

Billingshurst Fire-fighters welcome new recruit

T

he latest recruit at Billingshurst fire station is Andrew Buddle who successfully passed his tense training course last month. Andrew is now responding to fire calls with the other fire-fighters and will now undergo further training in the next two years to further his development within the fire service. Good Luck Andy – you have a great team supporting you. Retained fire fighters all respond to fire calls from their work places or from home; Billingshurst fire station plays a huge role in keeping the community safe and providing fire safety within the home. In last month’s piece you read about our March Charity Car Wash. Once again, to all those that came along and supported The

Firefighters Charity by having their cars washed and also kindly digging deep into your pockets to donate, we would like to say a huge Thank You. We have now totted up the proceeds and are very pleased to announce we have beaten all other records from previous car washes and raised over £1,000 which is fantastic. The Fire Fighters Charity would not survive without fire stations throughout the UK holding these car washes twice a year. Our next car wash is due in September so if you missed this one, please watch this space for information on the next one.
